【A Dream of Red Mansions in Autumn】Author: nxam (Those Ambiguous Relationships)

In the first chapter, the wise Xiren speaks, the twelve beauties and the clever Qingwen guide the Grand View Garden.

"Young Master Bao... Young Master Bao... Get up!" A woman's voice faintly reached my ears.

I was fast asleep, and as someone who always lingered in bed, how could I get up so easily? Besides, there was no one else in my

room ; could it just be a hallucination?

"Young Master Bao... You can't stay in bed... Get up!" The woman's voice persisted, clear

and distinct.

Thus, I had no choice but to get up and see who was calling so loudly. Opening my eyes,

I saw a slender woman with a long face, a beauty in every sense, holding a basin of water beside my bed. She said, "Young

Master Bao, you're awake!"

Looking closer, I was startled. She wore a silver-red jacket, a blue satin vest, and a white silk pleated

skirt—clothing unbecoming of my time. But what was truly terrifying was not just that;

a casual glance around revealed a completely unfamiliar place. With a hint of panic, I

looked at the woman and asked, "Who are you? Where is this?"

At first, the woman didn't seem to care about my alarm, but rather scrutinized me carefully. Seeing that I wasn't joking,

she said suspiciously, "Young Master Bao, have you lost your mind again? I'm Xiren..." She immediately

put down the basin of water and reached out to touch my forehead.

My forehead wasn't hot; it was just that this sudden turn of events had left my mind a bit confused. I had only taken a short

nap , and how did I end up here? My mind raced, searching for similar scenarios, finally

settling on two words: time travel. Could it be that I had encountered the legendary time travel, except that

the reason somewhat ridiculous?

Thinking about these two names, "Master Bao" and "Xiren," reminded me of that book, only this one was even

more ridiculous than time travel. To confirm it again, I tentatively asked, "Where's Qingwen?"

"So Master Bao hasn't lost his mind after all. He still remembers Sister Qingwen. You were just teasing me again." Xiren

laughed , "Sister Qingwen was called away by Yuanyang early this morning. I guess she's with the old lady."

I gave a faint reply, pondering whether I could truly accept this reality, accept that I was

this so-called Master Bao.

Seeing me lost in thought, Xiren hurriedly said, "Young Master Bao, aren't you happy? Madam and the rest of the family have

returned today. Get up quickly and go pay your respects!"

How could I go in my current state? Even if I did, I wouldn't recognize them. I quickly replied, "I'm

not , so I won't go."

Xiren exclaimed in surprise, "Ah! Is it serious? Should I go find Doctor Hu to take a look at you?"

I quickly said, "No need for that, sister. It's nothing serious. I'll be fine after a rest

. Why don't you sit here and chat with me to relieve my boredom?"

Xiren smiled and said, "I think Young Master Bao is trying to slack off again." Despite her words, she sat down beside the lacquered bed to keep me company.

At that moment, I thought of the Twelve Beauties of Jinling, whom I most wanted to understand. I thought I'd ask Xiren first, so I

asked, "Sister Xiren, how long have you been in our Jia family?"

Xiren seemed lost in thought before slowly replying, "Now that you ask, Master Bao, I realize it's been ten years.

When I was little, my parents had nothing to eat, and I was the only thing they had left worth a few taels of silver, so they sold me. Luckily, I ended up in the Jia family,

where I've always served the old lady. I also served Miss Shi for a few years. After Miss Shi left, the old lady sent me

to serve you, Master Bao. I'm so lucky to have such a good master like you."

I smiled and said, "I'm also lucky to have such a good maid like you, who has been taking

care ." Praise doesn't mean much to me, especially since it might be the truth.

I continued, "Sister, you've been in the Jia family for so long, let me test you and see

how much you know about the people and affairs of our Jia family."

Xiren replied, "Having followed Master Bao for so many years, I haven't made much progress, but I do know a little about the people and affairs of the Jia family."

Hearing Xiren say this, I asked, "Do you know where Lin Daiyu lives?"

Xiren smiled and said, "I thought Master Bao was going to ask me a difficult question, but it seems you're just teasing me. Miss Lin

lives in Xiaoxiang Pavilion, which is across from our Yihong Courtyard. She chose to live there because she loved the bamboo stalks

and liked that it was quieter than other places. Master Bao, are you perhaps thinking of Miss Lin again?"

Hearing Xiren say this, I suddenly realized that Daiyu might have already passed away, and I quickly asked, "

What ?"

Xiren smiled and said, "Master Bao, have you forgotten? Miss Lin had to go back to her family a while ago to take care of some matters,

and she should be back in a while."

"Oh! My mind hasn't been working too well lately, I keep forgetting things." I breathed a sigh of relief, then said, "Then

tell about Sister Bao."

"Actually, those of us who serve here prefer to be with Miss Bao." The implication was that Daiyu was difficult

to get along with , which I understood perfectly. Xiren continued, "Miss Bao lives in Hengwu Garden, northwest of Grand View Tower.

She always thinks of us, and everyone hopes to have such a mistress in the future."

Xiren was kind and gentle, and her last sentence, though seemingly unintentional, revealed her true feelings. Perhaps

she hoped that her future mistress would be similar to her in temperament, or at least able to tolerate her, something

Daiyu couldn't do.

After asking Baochai, the first person I thought of was Yuanchun, who was connected to the rise and fall of the Jia family.

So said, "I like to hear you talk about your sisters. Tell me about Sister Yuanchun."

Xiren said, "Second Master Bao, how could we servants know about the Imperial Concubine? Even if we did, we wouldn't

dare to gossip. At the beginning of the year, when the Imperial Concubine visited her family, you were the one who was closest to her."

"Sister Yuanchun came at the beginning of the year?" I muttered to myself unconsciously.

Just as Xiren was overhearing this, she laughed and said, "Second Master Bao, you're being silly. This

Grand View Garden we're living in now was built as a villa for the Empress during her Lantern Festival visit. Back then, only you in the entire mansion could freely enter and leave

here . Later, it was only after the Empress lifted the restriction that the masters were allowed to move here."

I chuckled twice and said, "That's exactly why I asked, please don't be offended, sister!"

I saw Xiren's cheeks flush red, and she murmured softly, "How could I dare to blame Second Master Bao? It's rare for Second Master Bao to have a chat with me,

I'm so happy!"

I smiled and said, "Then if I say anything silly later, please don't laugh at me."

Xiren quickly said, "No, Second Master Bao, please ask whatever you want, chatting with you is very interesting."

"Then I'll ask again." I paused, and then said, "Tell me about Sister Tanchun?"

"Third Miss lives in Qiushuangzhai next to Xiaocui Hall. She loves calligraphy, and her studio has several calligraphy

rubbings by famous masters," Xiren said slowly. "Not long ago, she even started a

'Begonia Poetry Club' with Second Master Bao and the other young ladies at Qiushuangzhai to compose and recite poems."

After saying this, Xiren murmured to herself, "If Miss Shi were here, she would be delighted to see this atmosphere."

Hearing Xiren's low murmur, I asked in confusion, "Isn't Xiangyun here in the mansion?"

Xiren sighed softly and said, "Miss Shi is naturally open-minded, but unfortunately, Master Shi and Madam Shi passed away early, and she was raised by her uncle

and aunt . However, her uncle and aunt did not treat her well, which is why she often came to the mansion. I served her for those few years. Counting

the days, Miss Shi has not come for several years. I wonder how she is doing. The old lady even left a room for her in Aojing Pavilion

, and has someone clean it regularly, just so she will have a place to stay when she comes."

When Xiren spoke of Xiangyun, it was like an older sister caring for her younger sister, seemingly with pity, but also with deep affection.

I then asked, "Tell me more about Miaoyu!"

But Xiren asked in confusion, "Second Master Bao, who is Miaoyu?" Xiren didn't recognize Miaoyu,

paused and then said, "Could you be referring to the nun who lives in the Longcui Nunnery north of our Yihong Courtyard and practices Buddhism while still keeping her hair?"

I replied, "That's right!"

"I don't know her very well. The nun is rather aloof and doesn't like to associate with people. I have heard that Fourth Miss

is quite close to her." The Fourth Miss that Xiren mentioned must be Xichun.

"Oh, so Xichun and Miaoyu are close friends." I asked again, "Then tell me about Xichun?"

Xiren said slowly, "Fourth Miss lives in Nuanxiangwu next to Ouxiang Pavilion. She usually stays indoors. I

once heard Ruhua say that when Fourth Miss is indoors, she devotes almost all her energy to painting. The last time I saw Fourth

Miss was a month ago when Second Miss got married."

I know a bit about the Twelve Beauties of the Dream of the Red Chamber. I should have sighed that Yingchun was ranked second.

I was afraid of making a mistake, so I asked, "Sister Yingchun is already married?"

"This is a happy event that our Jia family held just last month. Second Master Bao, you..." Xiren was about to say something to me, but then, probably

afraid that I would think she was making fun of me, she slowly continued, "Second Master Bao's surname is Sun. He is from Datong Prefecture. His ancestors were military officers

and he now holds the position of commander. However..." Xiren hesitated.

I pressed, "But what?"

Xiren sighed, "But a few days ago I heard from Siqi that Second Miss has been married for over a month, and her husband often

abuses her Second Miss is timid and unwilling to tell her family. So, taking advantage of this visit, she made an excuse not to go back and

has been staying at her old residence, Zhuijin Tower in Zilingzhou, playing chess every day to relieve her boredom."

Hearing that Yingchun had been abused like this, I could only sigh along with Xiren. After all, it was a matter between husband and wife, and

outsiders shouldn't interfere.

After a while, I asked again, "Is Fengjie living in the Grand View Garden?"

"Second Mistress Lian? She doesn't have the leisure to live in the Grand View Garden. She's busy with the affairs of the mansion from morning till night.

The Jia family needs her to manage things in an orderly manner. However, occasionally when she has free time, she will go to

Hanfang Pavilion on the west side of the Grand View Tower to stay for a day or two, since Qiaojie lives there." Once she started talking about Wang Xifeng, Xiren became very talkative.

I said, "Feng Jie's shrewdness and competence are well-known. It's precisely because of her shrewdness that she has to do so much.

On the other hand, isn't your sister-in-law much more relaxed?"

Xi Ren said, "What you say is absolutely right, Second Master Bao. The eldest mistress lives in Daoxiang Village in the garden. If she weren't relaxed,

how could she be the president of your 'Begonia Poetry Club'? Lately, she's been focusing her attention on Lan Ge'er."

Finally, I asked, "Sister Ke Qing..."

Before I could finish, I saw Xi Ren exclaim in surprise, "Second Master Bao, please don't tease me anymore! This is

no laughing matter. Rong Nai Nai of the Ning Mansion passed away last year. When you heard of Rong Nai Nai's death, you were so anxious that

you vomited a mouthful of blood and fainted, causing everyone in the Jia Mansion to lose their appetite and sleep

. Fortunately, Heaven was merciful and you woke up. Have you forgotten such a big thing?"

So Ke Qing had passed away. How could I have known? I'm not Bao Yu. I said sadly, "I was really confused!"

Xiren looked at me with a questioning gaze for a while and said, "Second Master Bao, it feels like you've slept

for years."

I confessed, "When I woke up this morning, I suddenly forgot some things. It was only after you told me, Sister, that I remembered. In the future, Sister,

you can often tell me about things in the manor. Also, to avoid worrying the Old Madam, this matter must not be known to anyone."

"Hmm!" Xiren responded.

"What matter must not be known to anyone?" Suddenly, a clear female voice came from outside the room, with a

slightly sour tone. I looked in the direction of the voice and saw a woman walk past the green gauze curtain. A crimson cotton vest

was draped over her body, paired with a bright red jacket and skirt and a handkerchief, which made her look graceful and clever. Her appearance was slightly better than Xiren's.

I heard her sneer, "What is it that Second Master and Sister are hiding from everyone?" Her words were sharp and sarcastic, and

they hit Xiren hard.

Xi Ren hurriedly said, "No, it's nothing, it's just that Second Master Bao..."

I quickly interrupted Xi Ren, saying, "There's nothing to hide. I just discussed with Xi Ren that we shouldn't let anyone know that I'm

being lazy I wasn't afraid of Qing Wen.

Xi Ren was kind and honest, while Qing Wen was clever. I said this simply so as not to put Xi Ren in a difficult position. Compared to Xi Ren, Qing Wen

should be better at keeping secrets.

Qing Wen, of course, didn't believe me, but she didn't press the matter. Instead, she said, "I just came from the Old Madam's. She asked me to come and see

why Second Master didn't go to pay his respects, but I didn't mean to disturb Second Master and Sister's enjoyment."

After hearing Qing Wen's words, Xi Ren quickly stood up and said to Qing Wen, "I..."

"Sister Xi Ren, you can go down first. I also have something to talk to Sister Qing Wen about." Seeing the

tense , I interrupted Xi Ren and left Qing Wen alone.

After Xiren left, I pointed to the edge of the bed and said to Qingwen, "Sister, please sit here too!"

Unexpectedly, Qingwen replied, "I don't know how to take care of Second Master's daily needs, how dare I sit down?"

"Sister, what are you saying?" I said with a wry smile. "Actually, I have something important to tell you, and I only hope

you can keep it a secret."

Qingwen sneered, "Second Master, I can't keep a secret. Since it's your private matter, you only need to tell

Xiren, why tell me as well?"

Seeing that Qingwen wasn't buying it, I said sincerely, "I hope you won't tell Xiren about this."

Upon hearing that I was even keeping it from Xiren, Qingwen immediately became interested and approached to soften her tone, "

Second Master , please tell me what it is?"

I slowly said, "It's like this. I think I have 'dissociation syndrome.' I can remember some things,

but I can't remember others..."

Before I could finish, Qingwen exclaimed, "Ah! Second Master Bao, don't scare me!"

I continued, "Don't interrupt me. Can you let me finish? I just said that I can't remember some things, and

these things happen to be people and events in the Grand View Garden." I was still only half-truthful to Qingwen, but

I really did have dissociation syndrome. Otherwise, I wouldn't have dissociated into this Jia Baoyu's body and become a real fake

Baoyu. I just didn't know if it would be a blessing or a curse in the future.

After listening attentively to my explanation, Qingwen asked, "Do you remember me?"

I hadn't expected her to ask that, so I replied ingratiatingly, "Of course I remember. I'd like you to come with me later and

give me directions."

Qingwen asked, puzzled, "Why didn't you tell Xiren about such an important matter, but instead came to me?"

I said, "If I told Xiren, I'm afraid some kind of storm would break out in the manor within half a day. But you are clever

and know how to handle things appropriately. Besides, among all the servants who serve me, you are the one I can trust the most."

A hint of joy flashed in Qingwen's eyes as she asked, "Does Second Master really trust me?

"

I sincerely replied, "Of course!"

Qingwen said earnestly, "Since Second Master has said so, although Qingwen is not a saint, I will never be one to break

my promise . I'll come with Second Master after lunch."

With Qingwen, you only need to be completely open with her, and she will be willing to give anything. Otherwise, it's hard to guarantee she won't

do something terrible; perhaps this is her rebellious nature. Sometimes she could be a bit sharp-tongued, but she was also very capable and

good at getting things done. After several hours of interaction, I had roughly figured out the habits of Xiren and Qingwen.

Xiren was good at reading people's expressions, and Qingwen was good at seizing opportunities and knew how to deal with people effectively. If we used them well, they would be very useful.

After Xiren helped me get up, wash, and change my clothes, I passed through the gauze curtains and suddenly saw someone enter.

He had short hair tied into a small braid with a red silk ribbon at the end, wore a silver-red floral-patterned jacket, and brocade trousers. His sideburns

were sharply cut, his eyebrows were like ink paintings, and his face was like peach petals, with eyes that seemed to radiate autumn waves. Just as I was about to ask who he was, I looked closer and realized that

a glass mirror was embedded in the center of the four carved rosewood panels. The person I had just seen was myself. This reflection really

startled me. Was this really a man?

Xiren finished tidying up the bed curtains and came out. Seeing me hesitate, she approached and pushed the mirror aside, revealing

half of the door. Stepping out of the Mirror Gate, I saw intricately carved wooden panels on all four sides, each with its own unique pattern, all crafted by master artisans.

I was secretly amazed; no wonder this was Jia Baoyu's residence.

After finishing my meal, I bid farewell to Xiren, gestured to Qingwen, and went outside. I saw covered walkways connecting two sides.

Several rocks dotted the courtyard, with several banana trees planted on one side; on the other, a crabapple tree, its shape like an umbrella, its

green branches drooping and its blossoms like crimson.

Leaving Yihong Courtyard, Qingwen led the way, passing pavilions and ponds,

taking in the sights . Before long, I saw a pink walled enclosure ahead, containing several pavilions, shaded by hundreds of green bamboos. Inside, the covered walkways wound their way,

with pebbles paving the way. There were three rooms, one bright and two dark. This secluded place was Xiaoxiang Pavilion, which

was deserted because Daiyu had returned from her hometown. Walking around to the backyard, there are two small retreats for admiring the flowers and banana trees.

A gap in the backyard wall allows a spring to flow through; a ditch a foot deep drains the water, which flows into the wall, around the steps and houses to the front yard, winding beneath the bamboo and out of the wall.

Leaving the Xiaoxiang Pavilion, one enters a small path. The banks are covered with smartweed and reeds, the pond with its green water lilies and fragrant water chestnuts—a desolate scene that seems

to whisper grievances. At the end of the path is a multi-story building, bordered by water to the west and backed by a mountain to the east. The main hall in the north

room is the Zhuijin Tower, where Yingchun, recently married, resides. Stepping into the courtyard, one sees a woman with slightly plump skin, a well-proportioned figure, gentle

and silent, with cheeks like fresh lychees and a nose like goose fat, playing chess alone on the corridor. It is Yingchun, lost in thought,

unaware that someone has entered the courtyard.

I could only interrupt, saying, "Second Sister, you're playing chess by yourself."

Yingchun then realized there were outsiders, looked up and saw us, and quickly stood up, saying, "It's Baoyu and Qingwen.

" Her voice was weak and choked.

Seeing her listless appearance, I quickly asked with concern, "Second Sister, are you alright?"

"I'm fine, I just didn't get enough sleep last night," Yingchun said vaguely, as if she was hiding something.

I didn't press further, and only said, "Second Sister, playing chess alone must be so boring. How about I play a game with you?"

Yingchun seemed hesitant, saying, "Not today. Judging from the sky, your brother-in-law should be back by now."

It turned out that Sun Shaozu also lived here. To avoid causing Yingchun unnecessary trouble,

Qingwen and I had no choice but to bow and take our leave.

Qingwen and I left together, retracing our steps. After crossing the Bee Waist Bridge, we saw a row of houses. From Qingwen, we learned that

Qiushuangzhai was on the left and Xiaocuitang was on the right. Xiaocui Hall is flanked by banana trees that seem to hold sorrow and lonely paulownia trees. It has verandas on all four sides, with flowing

eaves and a verdant roof, overlooking the Qin Fang Creek. On a moonlit night, one could find a place to recite poetry and listen to the rain. Qiushuangzhai originally had three rooms, but

because Tanchun preferred spaciousness, she had the partitions removed, creating a large open space. At this moment, the courtyard gate was closed, and

a plaque under the eaves read "Paulownia Trees Cut by the Autumn Wind. "

Qingwen strolled over and knocked lightly twice. Soon, the gate opened, and a maid in a dark blue silk jacket peeked

out.

Qingwen smiled and said, "Shishu, is Third Miss here?"

"Miss is in the inner room practicing calligraphy." Shishu, seeing me behind Qingwen as she spoke, quickly came over and

bowed, saying, "Second Master Bao has arrived too! I'll inform Miss right away."

I replied, "No need for you to trouble yourself, sister." After saying this, I went into the courtyard myself, heading straight for the main room, leaving Shishu to entertain

Qingwen in the courtyard.

Standing in the hall was a young girl with slender shoulders, a narrow waist, a tall and graceful figure, an oval face, and beautiful eyes and delicate eyebrows,

practicing calligraphy at a large rosewood and marble table.

My intrusion had clearly disturbed her; her brows were furrowed, as if she were about to scold me. But upon seeing me, she said,

"Second Brother."

I approached the table and saw that her calligraphy was powerful and vigorous, like dragons and snakes in battle, or like light clouds shrouding the scene.

I asked, "Whose calligraphy are you practicing, sister?"

Tan Chun replied, "This is Ouyang Xun's 'Jiucheng Palace Stele.' I just received it, and I'm itching to practice. Please forgive my poor attempt,

brother ."

I blurted out, "Your calligraphy is elegant and profound, with square strokes and rounded lines. In the Grand View Garden, who can rival it?"

For some reason, I spoke so fluently; perhaps Jia Baoyu's literary talent was still fresh in my memory?

However, Tan Chun smiled without saying a word, clearly pleased. I had already learned from Xi Ren that Tan Chun possessed exceptional literary talent and was skilled in calligraphy.

She was experienced and worldly, and had a particular fondness for calligraphy. The various calligraphic works by famous figures, along with dozens of precious inkstones and

colorful brush holders, laid out on the marble table offered a glimpse into her refined taste. Looking around, I noticed a large Ru kiln flower vase on the table, filled with white chrysanthemums

adorned with crystal balls.

I remarked, "People say your room is elegantly furnished, with a free and unrestrained style; it's certainly true."

As spoke, I walked towards the west wall.

Tan Chun, accompanying me, laughed and said, "Brother, you're joking again. How can this compare to your Yi Hong Courtyard?"

On the west wall hung a large painting in the center, flanked by a couplet. I softly recited, "A life of leisure amidst mist and clouds, a rustic

existence by springs and rocks."

Tan Chun explained, "This painting is Mi Fu's 'Rainy Landscape,' and the couplet is Yan Zhenqing's calligraphy.

What ?"

I said, "It's vigorous and powerful, with a composed structure, transforming leanness and rigidity into richness and grandeur, its composition broad and magnificent."

Tan Chun praised, "Brother's insight is truly unique."

Below the painting was a long table with a large tripod on it. On the left, on a rosewood shelf, sat a large Guan kiln plate,

filled with dozens of delicate, yellow Buddha's Hand citrons. On the right, on a lacquered shelf, hung a white jade chime, with

a small hammer beside it.

To the east of the hall was Tan Chun's bed, a canopy bed draped with a verdant double-embroidered floral and insect gauze curtain—her

boudoir, which I felt was inappropriate to enter.

While discussing calligraphy with Tan Chun at Qiu Shuang Zhai, they unknowingly left before noon, taking their leave. They called upon

Qing Wen, who was enjoying a pleasant conversation with Shi Shu, and departed together.

Passing Xing Ye Zhu, they arrived at Ou Xiang Xie, a waterside pavilion built in the middle of a pond, with windows on all four sides and winding corridors

connecting to the left and right, also spanning the water. Entering the pavilion via a winding bamboo bridge, they saw two bamboo tables outside the railings and a black lacquered

couplet inlaid with mother-of-pearl hanging on a pillar. The couplet read: "Hibiscus shadows break the returning orchid oars, the fragrance of water chestnuts and lotus deepens the bamboo bridge." Thus, Ou Xiang Xie was not

a single waterside pavilion, but rather a combination of a waterside pavilion, a pond pavilion, winding corridors, and a bamboo bridge. Lotus flowers bloomed on all four sides, and

two osmanthus trees stood on the opposite bank.

Emerging from the left winding corridor, they passed through a narrow passage to a west gate. On either side of the gate were stone plaques inscribed with the

characters "穿云" (piercing the clouds) and "度月" (crossing the moon). Passing through this gate led to Liao Feng Xuan. Passing through the covered walkway, one

arrives a gentle fragrance wafts towards me.

Stepping inside, I see a graceful

young woman, her skin like jade, her breath like a delicate orchid, her face like a blooming hibiscus, and her hands like soft shoots, painting at a bamboo table. Upon seeing me, she quickly puts down her brush and asks, "What brings you

here today, Second Brother?"

I smile and reply, "While admiring the lotus blossoms at Jixiang Pavilion, I suddenly caught a whiff of painting. I thought it was coming from here, so I came

to take a look ."

Xichun suddenly says, "Second Brother, your timing is perfect. I was just pondering how to paint 'Red Water Lilies in Autumn.' You two

stand still, let me incorporate you into the painting." With that, Xichun resumes painting, clearly not giving me

a chance . Thus, I stand here chatting with Xichun.

Half an hour later, seeing Xichun slowly put down her brush, I approach to take a look. In the painting, I possess a natural charm, all

in my brows, and a myriad of emotions are gathered in the corners of my eyes. Beside me, Qingwen listened intently, seemingly lost in thought, her manner affected .

Through the painting, I could almost feel the deep red smartweed blossoms, the clear water, and the chilly autumn breeze—a scene of intoxicating autumn colors.

I praised, "The lines are strong and delicate, the colors are applied with a balanced density and natural interplay. The richness is not without elegance,

the craftsmanship is not stiff, the artistic conception is ethereal and refreshing, and the movement is relaxed and unhurried."

Xichun smiled and said, "Brother, you flatter me. I dare not accept such praise."

I said, "Sister, your painting skills are truly well-deserved. Besides, I really like this painting. May I have a copy?"

Xichun said, "Look at what you're saying, brother. You are a connoisseur of painting. I will send someone to deliver it to you after it is framed."

"Then I thank you in advance, sister." After exchanging pleasantries with Xichun for a while, I took my leave.

On the path, Qingwen suddenly said, "Second Master, after you receive the painting, please keep it safe and don't let anyone take it."

Seeing Qingwen's evasive answer, I asked, "Sister, is there something behind your words? Please speak plainly."

Qingwen said, "Because the painting only depicts the two of us, I'm afraid some gossip might see it and spread rumors to

Madam ."

"Hmm, I'll be careful."

Qingwen and I walked and chatted, turning a corner around the mountain, where a low wall built of yellow mud was faintly visible, its top

covered with rice straw. Inside were several thatched cottages, and outside were mulberry, elm, hibiscus, and various other trees with tender new branches, weaving two rows of green fences along their

winding paths . Below the fence, on the hillside, was an earthen well with a well pulley. Below, plots of land were divided into fields, filled with fine

vegetables and flowers, stretching endlessly. Beside the fence gate was a stone tablet with the three characters "Daoxiang Village" on it.

Entering the fence gate, we heard a loud "Wow!"

A little imp was winking at us. Qingwen hurriedly said, "Lan-ge'er, why are you all alone?"

Seeing that we weren't scared, Jia Lan said, "This isn't fun at all, Uncle Bao, I'm going to play somewhere else."

With that , he darted off and disappeared from our sight.

At this moment, a woman emerged from behind the low wall. Unlike her sisters, who were dressed extravagantly, she was dressed simply, with a full

yet slender figure, dignified and elegant yet radiant. She greeted us warmly. This woman was Li Wan,

and we quickly bowed and greeted her.

Li Wan said, "Lan'er was just being disrespectful and didn't know proper etiquette. Please don't take offense, Second Uncle!"

I laughed, "It's alright! That's just how children are."

Li Wan glanced into the distance and said, "That child, he's disappeared in no time. I have to go check on him."

After bidding us farewell, she hurried off in the direction Jia Lan had run off in.

Watching Li Wan disappear into the distance, I thought about how difficult it must be for a widow to raise a child alone. No wonder she chose to live

here , detached from worldly affairs, needing only a well and half a plot of land, leaving the harvest or the wasteland to fate.

Continuing along the path, turning over the hillside, weaving through flowers and willows, touching rocks and leaning against springs, past the tea rose trellis, into the oak grove,

across the peony pavilion, through the peony garden, into the rose garden, and out of the banana grove, the path winding and turning. Suddenly, we heard the murmuring of water cascading from

a stone cave , with vines hanging down above and fallen petals floating below. This was the waterside pond, but we saw no other way out, and were

at a loss.

Qingwen said, "We can also get in through the winding path up the mountain." She then led the way, and I followed her, climbing vines and touching trees.

The more fallen petals appeared on the water, the clearer it became, flowing gently and meandering. Two rows of weeping willows, interspersed with peach and apricot trees, lined the pond,

blocking out the sun, truly free of any dust. Suddenly, a winding, red-railed plank bridge appeared amidst the willow shade. Crossing the bridge,

all paths led to a cool, tiled house with uniformly polished brick walls and clear, patterned tiles.

Seeing the courtyard gate ajar, I strolled in. Suddenly, a massive, exquisitely shaped rock jutted out, surrounding me with various other stones, completely obscuring the inner rooms. Climbing the cloud-like ladder, I was greeted by

a unique fragrance, far surpassing any floral scent. (A rare herb...)

The vines twined around the stones and eaves, stretching upwards as if striving to reach their master.

I told Qingwen to wait outside, and pushed open the door. It was like a snow cave, utterly devoid of any ornaments. On the table was only

an earthenware vase with a few chrysanthemums, two books, a tea set, and teacups. The bed was simply draped with a blue gauze curtain,

and the bedding was equally plain. A woman sat by the bed doing needlework, her hair styled in a glossy black bun. She wore a honey-colored

cotton jacket, a rose-purple and gold-and-silver-fur vest, and a pale yellow silk skirt—all modestly worn, yet not luxurious.

Her lips were naturally red, her eyebrows naturally dark, her face like a silver basin, and her eyes like water-almonds. It was none other than Xue Baochai, the mistress of Hengwu Garden.

When Baochai saw me, she quickly stood up and said with a smile, "Baoyu! You've come."

I smiled and said, "I couldn't concentrate on my studies in the study, so I came out for some fresh air, and that's how I ended up here."

Baochai chuckled and said, "I've never seen Baoyu concentrate on his studies, and you've been wandering around more than once or twice."

I laughed and said, "Sister, you really understand Baoyu well. Reading books only makes you pedantic. Reading ten thousand books is not as good as

traveling ten thousand miles ."

Baochai smiled sweetly and said, "So, does that mean Baoyu is about to embark on a long journey?"

I lied and said, "Sister, you're wrong. Traveling ten thousand miles is not as good as meeting countless people. That's why I came to see you."

Baochai grinned and said, "I knew Baoyu was so eloquent and persuasive. I admit I'm no match for him."

We chatted amiably in the room, sometimes with witty remarks, sometimes with humor, making Baochai beam with joy.

We finally brought life to the simple and cold Hengwu Garden.

If it weren't for Qingwen's persistent coughing outside, I don't know how long we would have chatted.

As I came out, Qingwen gave me a disgruntled look, gesturing for me to look at the sky. Thick clouds clung to the sky, and the setting sun

peeked through the gaps, casting streaks of crimson light. Dusk was approaching.

Stepping out of the courtyard, a haughty, arrogant, and ignorant young man approached me at the crossroads. Upon seeing me

, he said, "Brother Bao, you really came here! Perfect timing! Tonight, let's go to Pear Fragrance Courtyard for drinks and entertainment." With that, he grabbed

my hand, trying to lead me away.

I was at a loss for words, unsure how to respond. Suddenly, I heard Qingwen say discontentedly, "Young Master Xue, my second master isn't

as free as you. Master Zheng is questioning my second master."

Hearing Qingwen call him Young Master Xue, I guessed that this man was Xue Pan; only he could have such a domineering and foolish

appearance. Qingwen, knowing when to defuse the situation, sensed my reluctance to go with Xue Pan and brought up Jia Zheng, figuring

Xue Pan wouldn't dare disobey his uncle.

I feigned helplessness, saying, "Brother Xue, it seems today won't work."

Xue Pan had no choice but to let go of my hand, saying, "Alright, I'll find you another day." As he turned to leave,

he glanced back at us and chuckled, "Brother Bao, that maid Qingwen in your courtyard is quite pretty, but

judging by her temperament, she won't be easy to get close to."

Qingwen spat, "You dog-mouthed lecher!" Before she could finish her curse,

Xue Pan had already vanished.

Not far from the crossroads, we saw towering pavilions, high-rise buildings, and palaces embracing each other on all sides, with winding covered walkways,

green pines brushing the eaves, magnolias entwining the steps, and golden beast faces and colorful dragon heads.

Unsettled said, "This is the Provincial Residence Villa." As they walked, a jade archway came into view,

exquisitely carved with dragons and phoenixes, the words "Provincial Residence Villa" inscribed below. Behind the archway was the Grand View Pavilion, flanked

by two pavilions, one called "Hanfang Pavilion" and the other "Zhuijin Pavilion." In the center was the Hall of Desire, and finally, the Jiayin

Hall.

Continuing on, they reached a large bridge where water rushed in like a crystal curtain. This bridge was a sluice gate connecting to the outer river, drawing water

from —the true source of the Qinfang Stream—hence the name "Qinfang Sluice Gate." Along the way, they passed simple thatched cottages, stone walls,

woven flower windows, a Taoist nunnery hidden in the woods, a secluded Buddhist temple at the foot of the mountain, winding corridors and caves, and square and round pavilions.

Seeing that it was getting dark, they didn't venture further. The two walked around the peach blossoms, through a moon gate woven from a bamboo fence and flowers,

and across a stone bridge. Suddenly, they saw pink walls and drooping green willows. Following the pebble path, they turned two corners and

came to a door. Turning again, they found a small door with a soft, green curtain sprinkled with flowers hanging on it.

Qingwen lifted the curtain and let me in. As soon as I saw the furnishings, I asked in confusion, "Why does this place look so much

like the Grand View Garden?"

Qingwen smiled and said, "Second Master, this is the Grand View Garden. You wouldn't even recognize your own home." It turned out that we had walked in circles and

returned the Grand View Garden.
