Wu Honglian

Wu Honglian

This story takes place during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of the Southern Song Dynasty.

There was an official named Liu Xuanjiao, whose ancestral home was Chongyang Town, Yongjia County, Wenzhou Prefecture.

At only twenty-five years old, he was already a man of profound knowledge, brimming with talent, and renowned far and wide.

Liu Xuanjiao lost both parents at a young age, enduring hardship and loneliness in his early years. With no relatives or friends, he diligently pursued his studies alone.

Later, he married and moved into his wife's family.

Not long after their marriage, Liu Xuanjiao participated in the imperial examinations, passed with flying colors, and was appointed by the imperial court to serve as a prefect in Hangzhou.
He was truly a young man of great promise. Liu Xuanjiao's wife, Lady Gao, was twenty years old, intelligent, beautiful, and dignified.
Less than a year into their marriage, her husband was to take up his post in Hangzhou, and the couple were deeply reluctant to part.

On this day, Liu Xuanjiao, accompanied by his servants, bid farewell to his parents-in-law and wife and began his journey to Hangzhou. He traveled for several days, eating and drinking as he went, resting at night and traveling by day, before finally arriving in Hangzhou.

In Hangzhou Prefecture, there was a reception pavilion for newly appointed officials. In ancient times, whenever a new official took office, all his subordinates, teachers, students, abbots, monks, Taoist priests, generals, elders, and prominent figures would wait respectfully at the pavilion to welcome him into the city.

When Liu Xuanjiao arrived at the pavilion, a large crowd of officials, civilians, and soldiers surged forth to welcome him into the city. Once inside the prefecture, Liu settled his belongings and then went to assume his post.

It was customary for a new official to call out the names of his subordinates upon taking office; this official ceremony was used to demonstrate the new official's authority.

Therefore, not only officials but also other prominent figures and gentlemen had to participate in the roll call as a sign of respect.
When Liu Xuanjiao emerged from the hall, everyone was already lined up below, paying their respects to the new official. His subordinates handed Liu Xuanjiao the list of those who had come to pay their respects.

Liu Xuanjiao then called out each name.

Everyone was present except for Zen Master Yutong, the abbot of Zhulin Peak at Shuiyue Temple in the south of the city, who had not come to pay his respects.
Young and impetuous, Liu Xuanjiao was furious: "This monk dares not come to pay his respects to me! How rude!"
Enraged, he immediately issued an order: "This Zen Master Yutong has not come to pay his respects to me; he clearly disregards the imperial court! This is a serious offense. Arrest him immediately and bring him in for questioning!"

At this moment, the abbots of other temples in the hall hurriedly replied to Liu Xuanjiao: "This Zen Master Wangtong is an ancient Buddha incarnate, having cultivated in the Bamboo Forest Peak for fifty-two years without ever leaving. Even when there are any welcoming or sending-off ceremonies at the temple, it is always his disciples who handle it. Please forgive him, Your Excellency."

Since the other eminent monks had spoken on his behalf, Liu Xuanjiao could not easily retaliate. On the surface, he appeared magnanimous and decided not to pursue the matter further, but inwardly he harbored deep hatred for Zen Master Yutong and secretly plotted his revenge.

That evening, a public banquet was held in the government hall to welcome the new official. As is customary

at such banquets, a large group of courtesans were invited to entertain the guests.

As Liu Xuanjiao drank and became flushed, he noticed a sixteen-year-old courtesan among the group of singing girls. Her beauty was captivating, and her melodious voice was enchanting. A thought stirred within him.

As the highest-ranking official in Hangzhou, disciplining Zen Master Yutong would be incredibly easy for him.

He could fabricate a charge and have him flogged fifty times.

In ancient times, official corruption was rampant, and the arbitrary actions of officials were commonplace; no one dared to speak out.

However, the thought of Zen Master Yutong made Liu Xuanjiao realize that using the power of the government to punish him wouldn't be enough to quell his hatred.

Moreover, many people in Yangzhou knew he hated Yutong; even if he fabricated a more elaborate charge, it wouldn't escape their notice.

He wanted to destroy Yutong, but he wanted to do it all gracefully.

Liu Xuanjiao was well-read and intelligent. He knew that Zen Master Yutong, claiming to be a reincarnation of an ancient Buddha, had cultivated for fifty-two years. For such a high-ranking monk, life and wealth were of little consequence. His

only value was his reputation.

"The worst thing for a monk's reputation is to be associated with pornography,"

Liu Yijiao thought to himself.

Therefore, when he saw this sixteen-year-old courtesan, a clever plan formed in his mind. Only by using lust to ruin Yutong's reputation could he quell his hatred without anyone noticing.

So, Liu Yijiao called the young courtesan aside and asked her name.

The young courtesan replied, "My surname is Wu, and my given name is Honglian."

Liu Yijiao remembered this, and that evening, as the banquet was ending, he secretly kept Wu Honglian behind.

His subordinates, thinking their lord wanted to patronize Honglian, discreetly dispersed. Wu Honglian, believing she could win her superior's favor and secure future wealth and protection, was overjoyed.

Unexpectedly, late at night, when everyone was alone, Liu Xuanjiao summoned Wu Honglian to his study and whispered to her, "Tomorrow, find a way to go to Yongyue Temple and trick Monk Yutong into having sex with you. Afterwards, bring me the evidence you use to hand over, and you'll be richly rewarded."

Wu Honglian immediately shook her head, "Sleep with a monk? Absolutely impossible!"

Liu Xuanjiao was displeased, "Why? Aren't you a prostitute? Aren't prostitutes allowed to sleep with anyone?"
Seeing her superior's anger, Wu Honglian hurriedly explained, "Sir, I am a prostitute; sleeping with clients is commonplace. But to sleep with this Monk Yutong is truly impossible." "

Why? Isn't Yutong a man?"

"He is a man, but…"

Then, Wu Honglian explained to her superior that this Monk Yutong was over eighty years old, with profound spiritual cultivation, having already reached a state of enlightenment. How could a mere prostitute like her possibly seduce him into having sex?

Upon hearing this, Liu Xuanjiao flew into a rage: "What? You dare disobey my orders? You're utterly audacious!"
Wu Honglian burst into tears: "Sir, it's not that I'm bold, it's just that I have no way to seduce Monk Wang Tong into bed."

Liu Xuanjiao was furious and slapped his hand: "Let me tell you, if you don't complete the task by tomorrow, I'll have someone frame you and throw you in jail for eighteen years!"

Wu Honglian dared not utter another word. She left the government office, pondering deeply: "What should I do?"
After much thought, the best solution seemed to be returning to the brothel and seeking help from her madam.

This madam was a seasoned veteran of the pleasure quarters, skilled in setting up erotic traps and adept at erotic tricks.
Wu Honglian went to the brothel and explained the situation.

Upon hearing this, the madam knew she couldn't disobey the magistrate's orders, but tricking Monk Wang Tong seemed impossible.

The madam spent the entire night devising a brilliant plan.

He meticulously instructed Wu Honglian on how to conduct herself, word by word.

The next day at noon, the sky was overcast but not rainy, the weather at the end of winter in December. Wu Honglian deliberately wore white mourning clothes, carrying a basket of soup in her hand, and left the brothel.

The brothel was far from Shuiyue Temple, and by the time Wu Honglian
reached the temple on foot, it was already late afternoon. Just then, a strong wind and rain began to blow. Wu Honglian stood leaning against the gate of Shuiyue Temple.

This Shuiyue Temple was a very remote temple, almost deserted, and very desolate. Wu Honglian stood at the gate for a long time, but no one came or went.

The wind and rain soaked her to the bone, and the cold wind made her feel very uncomfortable. She wanted to go into the temple to take shelter.
However, when she left, the madam instructed her that she could only enter the temple after dark, so Wu Honglian had no choice but to endure it.

She waited until dark, when an old Taoist priest came out and closed the door.

Honglian stepped forward and greeted the old Taoist priest with a bow. The priest returned the greeting, saying, "It's getting late, madam. Please return; I must close the gate."
Suddenly, tears welled up in Honglian's eyes. She knelt before the old priest and pleaded, "Please have pity, sir. I live in the city. My husband has been dead for a hundred days, and there's no one at home. I offered him food and drink as a sacrifice and cried for a while. Before I knew it, it started raining, and the city gates were closed. I can't go home, so I have no choice but to seek shelter in the temple. Please have mercy and tell the abbot that I can stay here for the night. I will take my leave tomorrow morning and will not disturb you any longer."

After speaking, Honglian

knelt down at the foot of the temple gate, tears streaming down her face, refusing to rise. The old priest then said, "Please rise, madam. I will inform him." Seeing that he had said this, Honglian stood up. The old priest closed the temple gate and led Honglian to a small room next to the monks' quarters, which was his bedroom. He told Honglian to sit inside and then hurried to the abbot's meditation room to inform him of Honglian's pitiful situation.

Upon hearing this, the monk Yutong said, "This is a convenient matter. It's late; you can let her spend the night in the side room and send her away at dawn tomorrow."

The Taoist priest, having received the Zen master's order, went to settle Honglian.

As night deepened, Honglian heard the second watch drum, the appropriate time the madam had told her. She got up and went out of the side room. The temple was quiet; in the winter night, no one was around.

Honglian walked straight to the meditation room.

The door to that room was closed, and a bright glass lamp hung inside. Through the large window, she saw the abbot meditating, and the abbot also saw Honglian.

Honglian whispered, "Abbot, please have mercy! My clothes are thin, and the night is unbearably cold. Please open the door and lend me a few clothes to cover myself; otherwise, I will surely freeze to death." The

abbot was a kind man, highly accomplished in his practice; men and women were all mortals in his eyes. He opened the door, let Honglian in, gave her a meditation robe, and then went to meditate on the sacred bed.

Honglian walked to the meditation bed and bowed deeply more than ten times, crying and sobbing, "It hurts so much!"

She choked back sobs and wailed, leaning against the elder, her cries of pain seeming very pitiful. The elder couldn't help but ask her, "Young lady, why are you only crying? Where is the pain?"

Honglian replied, "When my husband was alive, he would take off his clothes and hold me in his arms, pressing his warm belly against my cold belly, and the pain would subside. But tonight, the pain has returned, and it's so cold; I'm sure I'll die! If the elder would save my life, he could press his warm belly against me, and that would save me."

The monk Yutong, confident in his fifty-two years of cultivation and high level of spiritual attainment, was not afraid of the temptation of women, so he unbuttoned his robe and embraced Honglian.

Seeing that the elder had fallen for her trick, Honglian quickly undressed, revealing her lower body, and fell into his arms, saying, "I beg you, Elder, to take off your underwear as well, and press your warm belly against me to save my life."

The elder looked down and saw Honglian's naked body, beautiful as a flower, her two white breasts trembling seductively, her dark pubic hair enveloping her like a mysterious cave…

His primal instincts unconsciously overcame fifty years of cultivation, and Honglian had already slipped her hand inside Yutong's underwear, scratching and groping.

Yutong was instantly aroused and could no longer control himself. Before he knew it, Honglian had pulled down his underwear.

The two embraced and fell onto the bed. Honglian used the skills she had learned in the brothel to serve the monk Yutong until he was completely intoxicated, experiencing ecstasy.

Yutong finally tasted the pleasure of intercourse and deeply regretted wasting fifty years of his life!
After a brief separation, their passion ended.

Honglian tore off a piece of white cloth from the sleeve of the abbot's robe, smeared it with the abbot's semen, and hid it in her sleeve.

Seeing this, the abbot was suspicious and pressed her for answers.

Honglian had no choice but to reveal the truth: Liu Xuanjiao had plotted against him.

The abbot's wife, Yutong, was shocked and filled with remorse.

By then, it was already dawn, and the abbot, no longer blaming Honglian, ordered the monks to open the temple gates and let her out.

Then, the monk Yutong took a bath, changed into new robes, and committed suicide in his chair.

Although Liu Xuanjiao had broken Yutong's vow of celibacy and avenged his hatred,

on the very day of Yutong's death, his wife, Gao, gave birth to a daughter.

This daughter grew up to be a prostitute, leading some to believe that she was Yutong reincarnated to seek revenge.
