Chapter 1: The Young Scholar Peeks Through the Wall The poem

reads:

Sitting idly, not from being drunk, I leisurely explore a deep affection.

I once played the zither under the moon. Zhuo Wenjun, newly widowed, why not become my phoenix?

Thinking of her slender waist and beautiful mouth, where can one find such a youthful figure at fifteen?

If only I could have the clouds of Wushan in my dreams, shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand, it would be better than walking in the apricot garden with its melodious sounds.

To the tune of "Tianxianzi" (Heavenly Fairy),

this poem is titled "Foolish Longing." It expresses a deep longing and pity for a beautiful woman, a longing so profound that it is difficult to find. This foolish yearning is not unique to the poet; no one is as foolish as wood or stone. Who wouldn't dream of such a beautiful woman, sharing a bed with her? However, most women, though possessing some beauty, are merely made up. They cannot be described as breathtakingly beautiful, possessing the allure of a goddess. Only those who can truly captivate us are worthy of our desires. Imagine her flowing hair, delicate eyebrows, and a face like a pear blossom; imagine her lower abdomen, between her thighs, soft as cotton, white as jade, full and smooth, dry and firm—how could any lover not be driven to foolish longing? But while everyone has such desires, not everyone can have them fulfilled. There was once a scholar, driven by a moment of madness, who had many extraordinary encounters and easily won the heart of a stunningly beautiful woman, becoming her lifelong wife.

This romantic tale takes place during the Chenghua era of the Ming Dynasty. There was a young man from an old family, surnamed Wei, named Rong, and courtesy name Yuqing. His ancestral home was outside the west gate of Songjiang Prefecture, to the left of Miaoyan Temple. At the age of seventeen, he was already a gifted writer. At fifteen, both his parents died, leaving him with only a husband and wife, the man named Chu Gui and the woman, Jia, named Shancha, twenty-one years old. She was naturally licentious and witty. Their neighbor was a widow named Ka Erniang, and they lived together with her daughter, Lan Ying, and their servant Zhang Xiu. Although young, Wei Yuqing was mature beyond his years. His family had inherited a great fortune, and he had been well-fed and clothed since childhood. He was also exceptionally handsome, with fair skin, red lips, and a refined and elegant appearance. Not only were men rarely seen, but even among women, one in a thousand could not find such a charming and beautiful man. Although he had several classmates and friends, he was too lazy to socialize and spent his days reading in his study.

One day, he picked up a book of Wu-Yue legends and, upon reaching the last volume, burst into laughter: "Everyone laments the fall of the King of Wu, but I alone lament that he gained Xi Shi, enough to make him die with a smile. After several generations, Yue will also become a captive. Wouldn't it be better for King Fuchai to take his beauty on a painted boat, with flutes and drums, and spend his days touring the Gusu Terrace? Wouldn't that be wonderful!" After saying this, he lowered his head and pondered for a while, then sighed: "I think life is like a fleeting moment. If one cannot find a beautiful and affectionate person to share poetry and romance with, even if one holds the highest official position and is as wealthy as Tao Zhu, it is all in vain." He then laughed: "If I could have a wife as beautiful as Xi Shi, I would gladly burn incense and brew tea for her day and night, bowing and kneeling before her. But I wonder where the washerwoman is now!"

From then on, Yuqing's heart was set on marrying a beautiful wife. Although matchmakers came to her door daily, she was reluctant to agree to marry him. Whenever she sat alone, bored, she would carefully read and ponder "The Story of Yingying," "The Unofficial History of Yang Yunu," and "The Biography of Wu Zetian's Ruyi Jun." She once composed two quatrains: "

I cut a quilt of love, embroidered with mandarin ducks;

though I have not yet slept with my beloved, I leave behind a unique fragrance for you.

Deep affection, dreams are also beautiful, night rain leads me to Gaotang;

I think of my beloved, only on the other side of the water.

" Yuqing finished reciting the poem and then read it aloud twice more, clapping and laughing heartily. That night, she read until late into the night. Since it was late April and the weather was slightly warm, she went for a stroll in the courtyard. From Chu Gui's room came a series of sounds, like fish nibbling at water, followed by a woman crying out, "My dearest, I'm going to die!" It turned out that although Yu Qing was deeply infatuated, she hadn't yet experienced the true pleasures of love. That night, after hearing these sounds, she was filled with surprise and doubt, thinking, "How strange! What is that sound? Are the two of them on the balcony?" She approached the door, listened intently for a while, wishing there was a crack in the window. Fortunately, the upper half of the wall was mud. She quickly pulled out her gold hairpin, gently dug a hole, and peered inside with one eye. She saw a bright light, Shan Cha lying on the bed, and Chu Gui standing naked near the edge, his two white legs

thrusting wildly. Upon seeing this, Yuqing was overcome with lust and couldn't stand still. Seeing Chu Gui thrusting so vigorously, about five hundred times, he lay on top of the woman, kissing her several times and whispering, "My darling, will you let me see this wonderful thing?" The woman laughed, slapped her shoulder, and said, "You filthy scoundrel! You can do whatever you want, but won't you let me see it?" Chu Gui chuckled, got up, lit a fire, and squatted down to examine the vulva closely. Yuqing, outside, couldn't see clearly, only a tuft of dark hair. She saw Chu Gui lick the vulva with his tongue after a short while, making the woman unbearably aroused. She quickly sat up, causing Chu Gui to lie back, and then straddled him, inserting his whisk and thrusting wildly, making a clattering sound. After

a short while, Chu Gui rolled over, lifted one leg, and began thrusting wildly from head to toe. The woman moaned incessantly, "My darling, why are you so aroused tonight?" Chu Gui said, "If you call yourself a slut, I'll give you a good time." The woman nodded and quickly replied, "Slut, slut, slut." Chu Gui then took a deep breath and thrust hundreds of times. The woman's voice gradually subsided, and she could only pant heavily. At this moment, Yu Qing could not suppress her burning desire and began to caress her penis with both hands. Just as she was about to look again, she coughed. Chu Gui, knowing that his master was outside, quickly got up and blew out the lamp.

When Yu Qing tried to listen again, there was no sound, so she had to walk into the bedroom. Seeing only a half-moon reflected in the window and the flickering lamplight, he couldn't help but feel melancholy, thinking, "Even if I haven't met a beauty, how can I be without a maid or concubine to temporarily find..."
