Preface:

My friend Donglu Luoluo, from a young age, possessed natural talent and abundant learning. In his early twenties, he went to the capital and befriended many famous scholars of the time,

exchanging poems with them he went to Jiangnan, where his literary talent was renowned, and he met Jing. You are a man of great generosity and chivalry, always ready to help those in need. However, you were troubled

by the imperial examinations, unable to sell your work for a long time. You eventually gave up, saying, "Is this what they call 'mouth' (口口)? Is it just like Hua Sheng's 'penny-pinching' (斤斤)?" You then turned to writing,

producing many works, but only two volumes of poetry have been published.

This spring, you showed me your recent work, *Yu Gui Hong* (玉闺红), in six volumes. I read it all in one night and exclaimed that it was a masterpiece. The exquisite writing and beautiful

language are unprecedented. Your descriptions of court officials and even commoners are all vividly portrayed,

capturing their essence perfectly. Moreover, you have been in the capital for a long time and enjoy traveling extensively. Your descriptions of the entertainment district are as detailed as if they were ancient bronze vessels,

revealing of your experiences. Therefore, I commissioned Wenrun Mountain Studio to print it, hoping to circulate it widely.

You have also written many other works, including *Jin Ping Mei* (金瓶梅) in twenty volumes, *Fan Lin Yan Shi* (梵林艳史) in ten volumes, *Bing Huo Li He Yuan* (兵火离合

缘) in four volumes, and *Shen Dao Ji* (神岛记) in one volume, all of which are unpublished. After these books and publications, they will be printed and published one by one, so as not

to fail the blessings bestowed upon this person by Heaven.

Written by the White-Eyebrowed Old Man of Xiangyin at Baojianzhai in Jinling in the fourth year of Chongzhen (1631), at the age of sixty-five.

The poem reads: "

The Bronze Sparrow Terrace and Golden Valley are all like smoke, I gaze longingly towards Jiangzhou, but my dreams of returning are thwarted.

Deep into the night, the wealthy drink fine wine, and the beautiful woman's tears never dry.

The quilt is low, what can I tell her heartache? Who will pity her broken heart beside her pillow?

Now I will temporarily pack up my things and return to the mountains to farm."

Chapter One: "The Treachery of the Powerful Eunuchs and the Eunuchs Who Harm the Country, Memorials, and the Omen of a Wild Wind" The poem reads:

The poem reads: "

Last night, the Yatai (a place name) illuminated the cycle of reincarnation."

Past grudges relentlessly haunt me.

Deep regret lingers, for my scheming wasted in vain

. Now, all has turned to ashes.

It is said that in this life, we strive for fame and fortune, murder for wealth, indulge in lust and greed, bully widows, and abduct orphans. In the past,

we exhausted countless efforts and schemes, but when death arrives, retribution cycles.

All that painstaking effort and scheming is lost; we can take nothing with us.

Instead, we suffer in the underworld. It is better to accept fate, be content with one's lot, eat a bowl of rice, be a law-abiding citizen, do

good deeds, and help others. In the end, evil will be punished, and good will be rewarded. Now, let me tell you a

story of clear karmic retribution. Reader, please be patient; I will tell you. Beijing is the capital, the former capital of the Yuan Dynasty.

The Yongle Emperor of the Qing Dynasty, wanting to defend the north against the Yuan invaders, moved the capital from Nanjing to Beijing. The foundation for an everlasting dynasty was laid

. Beijing was truly a city of dragons and tigers, a capital of emperors, a place of boundless prosperity and endless

revelry nobles and dignitaries graced its walls. Now, let us recount the story of the Tianqi Emperor. There was a eunuch named Wei Zhongxian. He was originally

a rogue gambler who gambled away all his wealth. In a fit of rage, he cut off his own genitals, but survived.

Through connections, he entered the palace to serve the emperor. Because of his intelligence and skill in flattery, he quickly gained the favor of the Tianqi Emperor, receiving

extraordinary favor. Gradually, he seized power and interfered in politics. The Tianqi Emperor, being inherently honest and kind, was deceived by this treacherous minister and remained

oblivious. He believed Zhongxian to be a loyal attendant and entrusted him with all matters. Zhongxian was adept at pandering to the emperor's wishes, always fulfilling his orders.

Thus, his favor with the emperor grew even stronger. Wei Zhongxian, confident in his own abilities, became arrogant and self-important. He gradually became arrogant and lawless. He also became involved with Madam Ke, the wet nurse of Emperor

Tianqi

. The two indulged in debauchery day and night, defiling the palace and harming loyal officials. Readers might wonder how a castrated eunuch could still engage in such acts. It turns out that there was a system in the imperial palace

where eunuchs and palace maids who were mutually attracted

could request to live together, a practice called "pairing up." This was because the late emperor pitied the lonely eunuchs and palace maids, allowing

them to enjoy some intimate moments and alleviate their loneliness. This eunuch Wei was not castrated from childhood; after the castration, his lustful nature was not

completely eradicated. Since entering the palace, he had carefully served the emperor and had not done anything else. However, after gaining favor and power, he became somewhat

lustful. As for Madam Ke, she was Emperor Tianqi's wet nurse, serving in the palace for many years, enduring loneliness and isolation.

Once she met a young and handsome eunuch like Wei, who also possessed some semblance of lust, she was tempted to indulge. Overjoyed, Wei Jian, knowing that Madam Ke

was the emperor's wet nurse and

that he would rely on her for everything in the future, went to great lengths to please her. Unbeknownst to them, the two had already become entangled. One

day, Zhongxian, having nothing to do, wanted to speak privately with Madam Ke and arranged to meet her behind the rocks in the Imperial Garden at midnight. At

midnight Zhongxian, having finished serving the emperor, quietly slipped behind the rocks in the Imperial Garden. There he saw Madam Ke, her face painted with strange powder

, waiting for him with a seductive and alluring look. Upon seeing Zhongxian, she grinned, revealing her yellow teeth, and gave him a fawning smile. Frankly, it was truly

unbearable . Zhongxian, confined within the palace walls, still harbored lustful desires, his desire unbearable. Moreover, Madam Ke could offer him benefits, so he had

no choice but to comply. Without a word, Zhongxian stepped forward, pulled down his trousers, and embraced Madam Ke, kissing her repeatedly.

"My goodness," she said. "My darling, my precious one. You've worried me to death!"

The two straightened their clothes and tied their belts. Madam Ke said, "Our relationship is inconvenient.

If it's discovered one day, it will be disastrous. It would be better to report to the Emperor and have him allow us to be together. The Emperor favors us, so he will surely grant our request. Then we can be open and aboveboard,

enjoying pleasure every night. Wouldn't that be wonderful?" Zhongxian nodded in agreement. The next day, he reported to the court, and indeed, they were allowed to be together.

With Madam Ke by his side, Zhongxian was like a dragon in water, a tiger with wings. He became even more domineering and tyrannical, committing all sorts of illegal acts,

selling official positions and titles, and doing whatever he pleased. He also took charge of the Eastern Depot, specifically to spy on anyone who opposed him. Under the guise of Eastern Depot espionage, he executed and humiliated countless loyal ministers in the court by forging imperial edicts, only deceiving the Emperor. Leaving aside the calamities caused by Wei Jian, let us now talk about another person, named Li Shinian, courtesy name Chunhua. He was a native of Suzhou in Jiangnan. He was fifty-one years old. From a young age, he was studious. At twenty-five , he passed the provincial examination and then the imperial examination, ranking fifteenth. He was appointed magistrate of Chaoyang County, Guangdong. After completing his term, he was transferred to Guiyang Prefecture, Guizhou. He was an incorruptible and upright official, thus receiving repeated promotions until he became a Censor, serving in the capital. His first wife, Zhang, had long since passed away . His second wife, Shen, was the daughter of Shen Qian, a student from Huzhou Prefecture. She was thirty-eight years old. She had received a traditional lady's upbringing and was both virtuous and beautiful. Although Mr. Li was an upright official, there was one shortcoming: he was over fifty and had no children, only a daughter , born to Shen. She was sixteen years old, and her nickname was Guizhen. This young lady was truly beautiful, possessing a beauty that could rival the most beautiful women in the land. Blessed by the natural beauty of Jiangnan, she was as delicate as a water lily, and also intelligent and clever . She was proficient in all the arts—music, chess, calligraphy, and painting; and knowledgeable in poetry, lyrics, and prose. Her nature was gentle, quiet, and virtuous. The Li couple loved her like a precious jewel, like the moon in the sky, cherishing her dearly. Therefore , they were reluctant to betroth her too early. So, when the young lady reached sixteen, she was still unmarried, living with her parents in the capital . She had a maidservant named Hongyu who served her. Hongyu was two years older than the young lady, and although not as beautiful , she was still pretty and clever, serving the young lady to her satisfaction. One day, Li returned from court. The lady hurriedly greeted him and helped him change out of his court robes. Li was sullen, his expression revealing his displeasure. The lady, seeing Li sighed deeply and lowered his head in silence. The lady spoke, "Sir, why do you look so troubled after returning from court today? Is something troubling you?" Lord Li sighed deeply and said, "How can a woman handle matters of state? I see the court in chaos, with eunuchs in power, deceiving the emperor and oppressing officials. The empire, which has stood for millennia, is on the verge of collapse. I have received the emperor's favor and should repay the country. But if things fail, how will you and your daughter survive? I am an honest official with no savings That is why I hesitate." His wife said, "My lord, you are mistaken. Since ancient times, loyal ministers have dedicated themselves to the country, caring little for their families. If you wish to rid the court of traitors, go ahead with it. Even if something unforeseen happens, if you are loyal, I will be faithful. As for our daughter, Guizhen, I intend to entrust her to her maternal grandfather in Huzhou Prefecture to arrange a marriage for her. That would put my mind at ease." Lord Li said, "My lady is absolutely right. I have underestimated you. This is not something an ordinary woman would say." As Li Gong spoke, he immediately ordered paper and inkstone to be prepared . He then wrote a letter to the Huzhou Prefecture, requesting his maternal uncle, Shen Shanlian, to come to the capital as soon as possible to welcome Guizhen. He finished writing it quickly and dispatched a trusted servant, Li Zhong, with silver and travel expenses to Huzhou Prefecture overnight to deliver the letter. After Li Gong finished his dinner, his wife and daughters went to rest. Li Gong, preoccupied with something, strolled to his study and sat down. He laid out paper and inkstone, preparing to write a memorial impeaching Supervisor Wei. Just as he was penning his pen and deep in thought, a sudden gust of wind arose, whipping up sand and stones—a truly violent storm. It was September, the weather cool but not cold. The windows had just been papered, but the wind was so strong that it blew them open, blowing the paper off the desk and out of the study. Li Gong was startled and quickly chased after the gust. He saw the bright moon in the sky, the shadows of flowers shimmering, and the paper lying flat on the steps. There seemed to be a strong wind there . Li Gong felt something was amiss. Just moments ago, a gust of wind had rushed into the room, rolling up the paper . How could it have been placed peacefully on the steps again? Li Gong was secretly amazed. A sudden inspiration struck him, and he looked up to the sky and silently prayed : "Gods and spirits, behold, I, Li Shinian, a humble subject in the mortal realm, dare to speak out against the eunuch Wei Zhongxian's abuse of power, which has brought ruin to the country and countless lives. I humbly beg Your Majesty's favor, hoping to remove this traitor and bring peace to the world." After Li Gong finished praying, another gust of wind suddenly blew. Li Gong looked closely, and there the paper was still perfectly placed on the table. Indeed, " A loyal heart shines like the sun and moon; I would rather die than lose my head on the golden steps. " But Li Gong could not bring down Wei Zhongxian. Let us see what happens next. Chapter Two: The Loyal and Honest Li Gong Suffers a Tragedy and His Daughter is in Distress . The poem reads: " Great virtues have always been shown through foolish loyalty; eliminating traitors and impeaching the guilty is the same throughout history. " Pity my young children, abandoned and left to wander aimlessly. Now, Li Gong saw the paper fall back onto his desk. He couldn't help but bow to the heavens. He then returned indoors, picked up his brush, and pondered. In an instant, his thoughts flowed freely, and his hand moved swiftly. He wrote: "Your subject, Censor Li Shinian, with utmost fear and trepidation, prostrates himself on the golden steps to report to Your Majesty. May Your Majesty live ten thousand years humbly report that the eunuch Wei Zhongxian, originally a scoundrel, by a stroke of luck, gained the position of a courtier. He has received boundless favor and excessive grace, yet he has not thought of repaying it. Instead, he has abused his power, wielding absolute authority, deceiving the emperor and harming the country. Even his death cannot atone for his crimes. He has also sold positions and committed all sorts of atrocities. He has had an affair with Lady Ke, corrupting the inner court. He indulges in sensual pleasures, living a life of unbridled debauchery. He has also infiltrated the Eastern Depot, perverting the law and embezzling funds." The court's renowned scholars were ruthlessly executed. Heavy taxes and harsh punishments were imposed, creating a climate of unbearable misery. Every prefecture and county in the land defered to them , seeking even erected shrines in their honor or adopted others as godfathers. They colluded with each other, forming a vicious cycle of evil. The people throughout the land suffered, and the nation was gripped by fear. Resentment boiled over. The crimes punishable by death were countless. Yet, on the one hand, they deceived the Emperor, secretly gathering assassins to plot treason. I, your humble servant, have received imperial favor for generations, yet I have not even considered repaying it. With the nation in peril, I dare not remain calm. Therefore, I disregarded all taboos and begged Your Majesty's ears. I humbly request that the eunuch Wei Zhongxian be handed over to the three judicial departments for severe investigation into his crimes of deceiving the Emperor, harming the country, and committing treason, so as to uphold the law and appease public opinion. If my words are inaccurate, I will be punished. I risk my life to submit this memorial . Lord Li finished writing in one breath, listing Wei Zhongxian's crimes one by one, feeling immense satisfaction. He then copied it again, intending to present it to the Emperor at dawn the next morning. Having finished copying, he went to rest. Meanwhile, Wei, the eunuch, knowing his actions were illegal, feared the Emperor would find out. He held absolute power, and all the eunuchs were his confidants. He had already prepared . He would first glance at every memorial presented from outside, and if he saw one impeaching him, he would immediately impound it. Those unrelated to him would be sent to the Emperor for review. He would then memorize the person who impeached him. Within a day or two...

That day, this man was about to be falsely accused and either killed or executed. That morning, before the Emperor had attended court, Supervisor Wei

read through the memorials one by one. Seeing Li Gong's memorial, he couldn't help but sneer, "Li Shinian, this lowly official, dares to challenge

me, the Emperor! Sooner or later, he'll show you the power of me, Eunuch Wei!" Having said this, he tucked the memorial into his robes.

After the Emperor had finished his court session and the civil and military officials had dispersed to their quarters, Supervisor Wei knelt before the Emperor

and reported, "I have important matters to report."

The Emperor asked, "What is it?" Supervisor Wei replied, "I must be pardoned before I dare speak." The Emperor said, "I pardon you

. You can speak freely without blame." Supervisor Wei immediately thanked him and then said, "I just heard that Censor Li Shinian has privately accepted

bribes bought official titles. The Emperor is furious! It is indeed true." Wei Jiandao said, "My words are not wrong. I hope Your Majesty will investigate thoroughly." The Emperor

said, "Since that's the case, let the three judicial departments arrest him and investigate the truth." Wei Jian received the decree and immediately led the Embroidered Uniform Guard to

the court

to arrest the man. It was common for Wei Jian to arrest people in the court. This time, when the civil and military officials saw Wei Jian arrive, they looked at each other, all

sweating with anxiety, wondering who would be the next victim. Perhaps it was their bad luck. When Wei read out the imperial decree,

they learned that it was for Lord Li. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. When Lord Li saw Wei Jian arrive, he already understood. He was loyal

to the country and was willing to die for it. He was not flustered at all and his face did not change. Wei Jian shouted, "Take him down!" and the

Embroidered forward, tied up Lord Li, and took him away. Some shook their heads, and some sighed. But let's leave that aside for

now and talk about Madam Shen. Since discussing state affairs with Lord Li last night, although I possess great insight, I am still a woman

. Because of the treacherous intentions of that eunuch Wei, I deeply fear for Lord Li's safety. Therefore, I tossed and turned all night, unable to sleep. Even at

dawn when I served Lord Li at court, I was still filled with trepidation and anxiety. I couldn't help but come to the Buddhist hall and instruct my maid to

summon Miss Guizhen. Guizhen obeyed. Upon entering, she saw her mother's pale face and tear-streaked eyes, and was secretly startled.

She said, "Mother, why did you call me? Why are you like this this morning? Did you have a nightmare last night

and couldn't sleep peacefully?" Her mother sighed deeply and said, "My child, please sit down. Let me explain in detail." Guizhen thanked her and sat down. Her mother

said, "My family has been officials for generations, not unknown people. Your father has received imperial favor and is loyal to the country. However, seeing the eunuch

Wei Zhongxian in power..." He abused his power, bringing ruin to the country. Thus, he harbored a heart devoted to serving his country. But because he couldn't bear to leave you, his child, he hesitated for a long time.

Last night, he happened to discuss this matter with me. I thought, how can matters of state be burdened by women and children? Therefore, I advised him

to be loyal and not worry about my mother and me. I have already written to your maternal grandparents' family, asking them to come and take us home to live.

Even if your father were to meet with misfortune, he would be at peace in the afterlife. The lady spoke with great sorrow, tears streaming down her face.

The young lady also heartbroken.

Just then, the servant Li Da rushed in, panting heavily, saying incoherently

, "It's terrible! The master was just arrested by the Imperial Guards in the court!" After saying this, he could say no more and

just stood there, panting. Upon hearing this, the lady cried out, "Heavens above!" and collapsed from her chair,

her eyes tightly shut. Her face was as white as paper. The young lady and her maid dared not neglect her. They quickly stepped forward to help her up, pinching her philtrum and

patting her back, calling out, "Mother, wake up! Madam, wake up!" After a while, the madam let out a wail, spitting out a mouthful of phlegm. She had slowly

regained consciousness. She immediately embraced the young lady and burst into tears. The maids and servants on either side also wept. After

the madam finished crying, she composed herself slightly and, wiping her tears, went to Li Da. "Master has been arrested. What for?" Li Da replied,

"I don't know. I only know he was taken to the Ministry of Justice's prison for interrogation." The madam returned to the room, took out ten taels of silver, and gave it to Li Da. "

You can take this silver to the Ministry of Justice's prison and inquire about how Master is doing inside. If needed, you can use it to make arrangements." Li Da

accepted the order and left. He returned late at night. Upon seeing the madam, he kowtowed and said, "I am guilty. I deserve to die. I will go to

the Ministry of Justice to see you, sir." The guard said he was a wanted criminal sent by Eunuch Wei. He was said to be guilty of embezzlement. Visits to the prison were forbidden. The guard

had no choice but to return and apologize to his wife. His wife said, "My lord, you are an official, incorruptible.

How could you be embezzling? It must be a frame-up by a villain. Tomorrow, take another ten taels and go beg. See what happens." Perhaps the guard thought it was too little. Li

Da obeyed. The next day, he took twenty taels, but still received no news. Three days passed, like a stone sinking into the sea,

without any progress His wife was frantic, like an ant on a hot pan, not knowing what to do. Moreover, she was a woman from a family of scholars and officials, and it was inappropriate

for her

to show three days, Li Da returned from outside, his face ashen, tears streaming down his face. His wife knew something was wrong and asked, "

What is wrong?" Li Da stammered, "..." "My lord! My lord! He passed away in prison last night!" The lady was heartbroken upon hearing this. She embraced

Guizhen and wept, "My child, I can't care for you anymore. When your uncle comes, he

will take you to your maternal grandparents' home in Zhejiang for upbringing. You'll find a good match and have someone to rely on for life. Your parents' efforts in raising you won't have been in vain." The lady stood up after speaking. Guizhen

cried uncontrollably. Suddenly, the lady rammed her head against a pillar. The maids and servants rushed forward to pull her back, but it was too late.

The young lady, still weeping, was also startled. Everyone stopped crying. They saw the lady lying stiffly on the ground, her brains splattered.

She was no longer breathing. Indeed,

to teach her husband to be loyal,

her virtuous soul went to the void.

The young lady, seeing this, couldn't help but collapse onto the corpse and weep loudly.

She Just then, a thunderous sound erupted outside. People burst through the door, their force overwhelming. A man at the front shouted, "Quickly

receive the imperial edict!" Everyone had no choice but to stop their sobs and kneel down. The man, holding the imperial edict, strode confidently into the inner hall and placed it on

the altar . The young lady led the crowd in kneeling to receive the edict. The man read,

"By the mandate of Heaven, the Emperor decrees: The corrupt official, Censor Li Shinian, has committed embezzlement and illegal acts, fabricating false accusations. I have handed him over to

the three judicial departments for questioning. Fearing punishment, he has already committed suicide in prison. Although he is dead, he still has much to lose. Therefore, all his ill-gotten gains are hereby confiscated and

added to the national treasury to serve as a warning to the corrupt. As for his wife and children, I, out of leniency, release them without further investigation. This is the imperial decree

." After reading this, the young lady thanked the Emperor and rose. The official immediately ordered his soldiers to seize the property. Li Shinian had been honest and upright all his life

, so there was no property to seize, only a few chests and boxes. The seizure was completed in no time. The official, seeing that there was little property, was somewhat

dissatisfied. Seeing the young lady's beauty, especially after her tears, which made her look like a pear blossom in the rain,

the

official couldn't help but feel a desire to mock her. He shouted at her, "Your clothes are also subject to confiscation! Hurry up and take them off yourself, lest the master lay a hand on you!" The young lady simply lowered her head and sobbed silently. This angered the official, who stepped forward to strike. The young lady dodged, hiding behind

a corner. Suddenly, a man appeared and blocked her way, saying, "Don't be rude!" The official angrily retorted, "Who are you? How dare you be so

bold!" The man replied, "I am Li Da, the son of Imperial Censor Li. The young lady is of noble birth; how can you be so easily mocked?"

"Insult!" the official exclaimed. "What a bold lackey! How dare he insult people like that! Order your men to seize him!" Li Da, a man

from Shandong , was tall and incredibly strong. Two or three men approached and wrestled him

. Then all the soldiers attacked at once, some with spears, others with knives. In no time, the loyal Li Da was reduced to a

bloody pulp. Hongyu, the maid, helped her mistress and, taking advantage of the chaos, secretly slipped out of the side gate. Fortunately, no one noticed.

The two, mistress and servant, ran like stray dogs, like fish that had escaped the net, for a long time until their mistress, Jinlian, could no longer walk and

sat down on a rock to catch her breath. Looking around, only Hongyu remained beside her, and she cried out, "It's getting late.

What should we do now? Indeed,

the sun sets, the journey is long, where will we find shelter? We are adrift

and forlorn on the vast horizon."

To find out where Miss and Hongyu went, please read the next chapter.
