The Celestial Spirit Hexagram (Simplified Chinese)

The first line of

the *Xianling Gua* (仙灵卦) reads:

"The top line is a yin line, forming the Kun hexagram, with the upper trigram above and the lower trigram below forming the 'Sheng' hexagram: 'Great success, use to see a great man, do not worry, a southern expedition is auspicious …

'" A soft, gentle voice softly recited the hexagram's text, judging good and bad fortune with a serious tone. The young Taoist priest before the wooden table listened intently, but his eyes couldn't leave the slender fingers holding the divination sticks. For a moment, he was somewhat absent-minded , secretly clutching his apricot-yellow Taoist robe. Unbeknownst to him, the person opposite him at the wooden table had already reached the sixth line of the Sheng hexagram: "This line says 'perseverance brings good fortune, ascension,' which means that as long as you, Senior Brother, are firmly determined and not swayed by external demons, you will surely achieve complete success and gain a good reputation in the martial arts world… Senior Brother Ye, are you listening?" The girl, engrossed in divination, noticed her senior brother's distraction and spoke with a hint of coquettish reproach. The young Taoist immediately snapped out of his reverie, gave an awkward smile, and said, " Junior sister's predictions are divinely accurate; who would dare disobey? I've taken it all to heart, so you can rest assured. This time, with the Taoist sects uniting to besiege the Demonic Sect, victory is assured. I will give it my all and live up to the generations-old reputation of Taixia Temple." Faced with his confident demeanor, the girl holding the yarrow stalks simply responded with a charming smile. Her gentle and refined manners, as always, were captivating; but when her delicate features smiled, there was a different kind of alluring charm . He suddenly felt his breath quicken, a strong urge surge within him, and he couldn't resist reaching out to snatch the yarrow stalks and pull this junior sister into his arms… but he finally restrained himself. She wore a green robe, a silk ribbon tied around her waist, and her neatly combed hair was adorned with a jade hairpin. Like her fellow disciples , she was dressed in Taoist attire, but not as a nun. She was the beloved daughter of Li Xuanxiao, the abbot of Taixia Temple, and her given name was Ningzhen. Taixia Temple on Mount Heng had stood for over a century, renowned in the martial arts world not only for its qigong and swordsmanship but also for its secrets of divination and numerology, making it a prominent Taoist sect. The temple was situated at the foot of Zigai Peak, near the Taoist holy site of "Zhuling Cave ," adding to its legendary aura. Before the current abbot, Li Xuanxiao, began his Taoist practice, he was already married. His wife tragically died young, and when Li Xuanxiao entered Taixia Temple, he brought his infant daughter with him. Later, he succeeded to the position of abbot. Li Ningzhen had grown into a graceful young woman, and when she wore her Taoist robes, she resembled a pretty and charming young Taoist nun, becoming known as " Junior Sister" among the disciples and "Senior Sister Li" among the Taoist servants. Seeing his daughter growing up and noticing the large number of young men in the temple, Li Xuanxiao said, "Although Taoist temples are not as strictly governed as Buddhist temples, they are still places of quiet cultivation, and men and women should not live together." Therefore, he built a separate hermitage outside the temple for Li Ningzhen, ordering all disciples to stay away. However, it was not unacceptable for Li Ningzhen to come to the temple to find her father, so she still met with the disciples regularly, and they knew each other very well. Compared to her fellow disciples, Ye Qiupu, who ranked second, was the one who deliberately approached her the most. From the moment Li Ningzhen began learning swordsmanship, Ye Qiupu was always the first to volunteer to spar with her. From then on, he paid close attention, never missing an opportunity to get close to her. Occasionally, he would catch a glimpse of a charming smile in her serene expression, and Ye Qiupu's heart would flutter , his tenderness for her growing a thousandfold. Perhaps due to the influence of her Taoist practice, compared to girls her age, the young Li Ningzhen appeared quiet and elegant, yet intelligent and quick-witted, with a penchant for extensive reading. The Taixia Temple possessed a vast collection of books, encompassing medicine, divination, astrology, and physiognomy. Besides her extensive reading, Li Ningzhen had a particular fondness for the I Ching, which gave Ye Qiupu an opportunity to ... Taoist martial arts often draw upon the principles of the I Ching. Li Xuanxiao's renowned "Crimson Cloud True Fire" technique, which made him famous throughout the martial arts world, is derived from the Li Fire hexagram in the I Ching. Ye Qiupu, being a highly accomplished disciple of his master, naturally had some knowledge of the I Ching and would often discuss the hexagrams and their interpretations with Li Ningzhen, catering to her interests. Once, as the two were engrossed in their conversation, Li Ningzhen suddenly and excitedly produced a thin, yellowed book, smiling as she handed it to Ye Qiupu, saying, "This is a divination book I found in my father's study. It contains many difficult questions. Senior brother, you are knowledgeable; could you help me interpret it?" The book was exquisitely bound, with the words "Immortal Divination Method" inscribed in sutra script on its chestnut-colored cover. The edges of the pages were yellowed, clearly indicating that it was an ancient book. Although Taixia Temple was a Taoist temple, it was renowned for its martial arts. Most of those who entered as Taoist priests sought to learn martial arts techniques. While they inevitably practiced fasting and abstinence, most did not study divination. Ye Qiupu only flipped through a few pages before breaking out in a cold sweat. He forced a smile and said, "Junior Sister is truly learned. This… the principles of the I Ching discussed here … I'm afraid they are not within the scope of our sect's martial arts…" Ye Qiupu prided himself on being a respectable man and didn't believe in divination at all. However, since Li Ningzhen liked it, Ye Qiupu could only try his best to accompany her, occasionally asking about divination to start a conversation. Whether by coincidence or not, over time, Li Ningzhen's divinations became increasingly accurate, predicting many things with remarkable precision, which amazed her fellow disciples. But whenever Li Ningzhen divined for someone, no one ever took it seriously. Most young martial arts practitioners are ambitious, focused solely on human victory, and have no belief in divination or divine secrets. On this day , the elite forces of Taixia Temple will join forces with the orthodox Taoist sects of Huangshan to eradicate the "Huawai Dongtian," a heretical sect of Taoism known for its heinous practices of sexual cultivation and often referred to as a demonic cult. Huawai Dongtian is rife with the practice of male-female sexual intercourse for the cultivation of evil arts, and its lewd and wicked deeds are countless. Just from the name "Huawai," it's easy to imagine the rampant and unscrupulous nature of this sect.

Fear. All the fellow disciples gathered in the Sanqing Hall, except for Ye Qiupu, who used the excuse of consulting Li Ningzhen about the fortune of their journey,

but his real

intention was to gauge her thoughts before their departure.

"This trip will take at least two or three months, and if the demon is powerful, who knows..."

Before pushing open the door and stepping out of the hermitage, Ye Qiupu lingered several times, unable to resist turning back to ask, "Junior Sister, do you really

have nothing else

to say to me?"

Li Ningzhen smiled without speaking, waving goodbye. Ye Qiupu said urgently, "Don't you really understand? I have a

sincere heart for you..." Li Ningzhen suddenly reached out her small hand and pressed it against her senior brother's mouth. Ye Qiupu's mind went blank for a moment

. Just as he was about to

grasp that slender, soft hand and kiss it

passionately, he suddenly heard Li Ningzhen laugh and say, "Senior brother, you are a Taoist priest, you cannot have worldly desires. Have you forgotten what I told you about 'auspiciousness'?" As she spoke, she gracefully withdrew her hand and lightly tapped his forehead with her finger.

Ye

Qiupu was stunned and said, "Junior sister, junior sister, I..." Li Ningzhen shook her head repeatedly and laughed, "Aren't you going to find my father

?

Are you waiting for someone else to come looking for you?"

Ye Qiupu's body trembled, his heart felt like it was being torn apart by a saw, extremely unable to make a decision. But Li Ningzhen

had already pushed him out the door and laughed, "I'll see you off at the temple. Go quickly, go quickly!" Ye Qiupu's

face

was contorted with resentment. With utter helplessness, he turned and left, his Taoist crown swaying precariously as if it were about to fall.

After the group left, the secluded Taixia Temple in the mountains grew even more desolate.

Having seen off her father and fellow disciples, Li Ningzhen returned to her room alone, letting out a long sigh. She thought to herself, "This must

be so upsetting for Senior Brother Ye, but what can I do?" Casually flipping through a book on the table, "Analysis of the Book of Changes,

" she

found a piece of paper underneath, on which a seven-character quatrain was written in bold ink. Li Ningzhen glanced at it, her brows furrowing slightly.

She thought

to herself, "Senior Brother Sun wrote this poem for me, and I haven't even had a chance to respond with one before he went with Father. Sigh

... and

those jewelry pieces my junior brother gave me..." Her gaze shifted to a small dressing box at the head of the bed. After a moment's hesitation,

she tucked it under the bed.

Li Ningzhen was the only girl in the entire Taixia Temple, but more than one fellow disciple had feelings for her, which made

things extremely difficult. Adding to the Taoist precepts, marriage was out of the question, and Li Ningzhen was the beloved daughter of the abbot, making this different from

ordinary

relationships among fellow disciples.

To the various overt and covert attempts by her fellow disciples to please her, Li Ningzhen

always responded with a smile, but often evaded the question, remaining noncommittal and leaving her fellow disciples increasingly bewildered. They couldn't

give up,

yet their affections rarely progressed, and their admiration mostly only grew stronger. Even though a Taoist like Ye Qiupu would be breaking the precepts if he were to indulge in

lust , she couldn't bear to reprimand him harshly. She always thought, "Even if we are not destined to be together, we cannot harm the bond between fellow disciples. Besides, if we disturb Father, wouldn't that embarrass my fellow disciples?" Sometimes, in the dead of night, Li Ningzhen would have romantic thoughts, imagining the sweet, tender feelings between a man and a woman. However, having lived in the Sanqing Realm for so long, surrounded only by yellow-robed Taoists, she heard nothing of romantic affairs, so how could she imagine them? Most of her wild fantasies were absurd and nonsensical. Once her emotions had calmed down, she felt an overwhelming shyness and sighed inwardly, "It seems I'll never get married. If I don't become a Daoist nun, I'm afraid I'll have to go to Ruyu Peak." Ruyu Peak, nestled among the mountains of Guilin, rises majestically into the clouds. Over a hundred years ago, an unnamed female swordsman founded the sect here, accepting only virgins as disciples, a practice maintained generation after generation. It earned a reputation for its strict discipline and shone brightly in the martial arts world with its unparalleled swordsmanship. If a Ruyu Peak disciple marries, she must, according to the sect's rules, live far away from the mountain. While the bonds of kinship remain, seniority is no longer considered. The women, having trained together, are closer than sisters; marriage and leaving the mountain are rare, and this is considered perfectly natural . When Li Xuanxiao converted to Taoism, the then abbot of Taixia Temple wanted to send the young Ningzhen to Ruyu Peak to learn martial arts, but Li Xuanxiao resolutely refused. After growing up, Li Ningzhen developed a close relationship with several disciples of Ruyu Peak, becoming confidantes . Yang Mingxue, the current leader of Ruyu Peak, was one of them. More than four years ago, when Yang Mingxue first became the master of Ruyu Peak, she became embroiled in a conflict between several renowned elders at Zhurong Peak in Hengshan . Li Ningzhen accompanied her father to witness the scene and saw Yang Mingxue fight four senior figures, winning all four battles. She was filled with admiration. That day, Yang Mingxue was dressed in white, as pure as frost and snow, which further accentuated her beautiful face . Her elegant demeanor and graceful bearing, coupled with her refined manners and dignified manners, made her swordplay as swift as a startled swan. Li Ningzhen was mesmerized, her heart pounding with excitement . Afterwards, she nervously approached her to chat, only to learn that Yang Mingxue was only twenty years old. "Six years older than me?" Li Ningzhen murmured softly, unable to hide her admiration, and murmured to herself , "I hope I can be like you when I'm twenty." Yang Mingxue smiled and said, "Master Li's skills are unparalleled in the martial arts world. You only need to learn a fraction of them to far surpass me. With your intelligence, you probably won't even need six years !" As she spoke, she was playing with the divination sticks that Li Ningzhen had shown her. "No...not just martial arts. I want...I want to become as charming as you..." Li Ningzhen didn't say these words aloud, but her heart was pounding with anticipation. In her eyes, Yang Mingxue was not only a martial arts master, but also an elegant and beautiful woman, graceful and charming, with proper manners and a slender figure .

Her smile and laughter only added to her allure. Facing Yang Mingxue, Li Ningzhen felt her face flush and her

heart race more than once

, though she couldn't explain why.

After they met, Yang Mingxue visited Taixia Temple several times, occasionally bringing a few of her junior sisters. Li Ningzhen

always treated them with utmost hospitality, finding it delightful. Sometimes, seeing Yang Mingxue and her junior sisters being intimate, flirting, and pulling at each other

, Li

Ningzhen felt her mind in turmoil, thinking, "How can I be like this with my senior brothers? But… if my father had sent me to Ruyu Peak when I was

younger

, I could be like them…"

As she grew older, Li Ningzhen was no longer the timid and shy little girl she once was. Before becoming a monk, her father, Li Xuanxiao

, harbored great ambitions and mastered both literary and martial arts. His refined speech and elegant demeanor made him famous throughout the land. Influenced by his father, Li Ningzhen also

developed

a clever mind and graceful manners. Occasionally, she would recall her childhood infatuation with Yang Mingxue, feeling both shy and amused.

Even

now, though her longing for Yang Mingxue had lessened, her admiration for her had grown stronger. She thought, " Only Miss Yang

could

achieve such fame in the martial world at such a young age. It wouldn't be an exaggeration for me to consider her my lifelong role model!"

Her childhood fantasy of joining the Ruyu Peak cult had now transformed into the respect of fellow martial artists. However, today she

was truly preparing to visit Ruyu Peak.

It turned out that a branch of the "Outer Heaven" cult had hidden its altar in the Yangshuo area, not far from Ruyu Peak. This

sect, calling itself the "Plain Maiden Sect," consists entirely of women. They don't rely on martial arts to wreak havoc, but instead specialize in practicing malevolent arts

such as sexual cultivation

, soul-capturing, and seductive allure—extremely insidious and dangerous, especially for men. Li Xuanxiao, fearing his disciples might succumb to temptation, sent his female disciples to Ruyu Peak to request that the women there monitor these bewitching women's movements and even unite with other righteous female

sects to wipe out the Plain Maiden Sect. In reality, this was due to Li Ningzhen's friendship with Yang Mingxue, and because Ruyu Peak didn't accept male guests, taking advantage of their shared gender. Li Ningzhen wasn't particularly interested in martial arts conflicts, but the opportunity to meet Yang Mingxue was a pleasant surprise. Just as she saw off the Taoist priests from Taixia Temple, she began packing her belongings, her heart filled with joy. She thought to herself, " It's been a year since I last saw Miss Yang. She's been so busy since then, she hasn't visited Taixia Temple again . More than half a year ago she eliminated the martial arts scourge 'Young Master Chun,' and I haven't had a chance to congratulate her! This return visit to Wangruyu Peak is a perfect opportunity to catch up." While overjoyed, Li Ningzhen didn't forget her hobby. She immediately took out divination sticks, thinking, "Let me cast a divination to see if this journey will be auspicious or inauspicious." She then drew one stick from the fifty sticks, signifying the Taiji principle; next, she divided the sticks into two portions and slowly drew the hexagrams using the "Immortal Divination Method." Divination, an art form that has evolved since the Shang and Zhou dynasties, has seen a proliferation of schools and variations , each with its own similarities and differences. Li Ningzhen's self-taught method, using divination sticks as tools, can be said to follow ancient practices closely. After a series of calculations , she obtained a Lesser Yang hexagram from the first line, followed by a Lesser Yin hexagram, and then four consecutive Greater Yang hexagrams, resulting in the "Fellowship" hexagram , which transformed into the " Return" hexagram. Li Ningzhen was slightly taken aback, thinking, "I've encountered 'Fellowship' transforming into 'Return'!" The first line of the Return hexagram reads: "Not far off, no regrets, great good fortune." The divination indicated that one should not go far, lest one regret it, and thus great fortune would follow…” A wave of hesitation washed over her. She tried to convince herself, “From Hengzhou to Guilin isn’t very far, it should be fine.” But then she thought , “The first line of the Tongren hexagram says, ‘Together at the gate, no blame,’ meaning I should stay in the temple with everyone, which means peace and safety. But so many people have already left the temple, and Father wants me to go to Ruyu Peak.” It was a rare opportunity to meet Yang Mingxue at Ruyu Peak, but the divination result was not what she hoped for. Li Ningzhen hesitated , feeling a pang of regret: “The ancients said, ‘Divination is for those in doubt; without doubt, there is no doubt.’ If only I hadn’t cast this hexagram, I would have just set off directly. What should I do now?” After much deliberation, he finally came to a conclusion: "Divination is merely a guide; to avoid misfortune and seek good fortune, one must adapt to circumstances. The hexagram indicates I should not stray far, likely a warning that the temple is full of experts and I must be wary of enemies from unorthodox sects. I should be careful on my journey and return quickly ." The text of the hexagrams has remained unchanged for millennia, yet it has been able to adapt to the vicissitudes of life, thanks to the interpretation of the diviner. Li Ningzhen thought this way and felt relieved, her previous unease vanishing. So she packed her belongings and left the temple the next day, heading south . The orthodox Taoist sect's attempt to besiege "Huawai Dongtian" had already provoked the demonic sect to vow revenge, and Li Ningzhen dared not be careless, remaining vigilant at all times. Fortunately, the journey was uneventful, and she arrived safely in Guilin Prefecture within a few days. Upon arriving at the gate of Ruyu Peak, Li Ningzhen felt a slight pang of annoyance. " Ninety or ten days have passed ," she thought, "It's already too long! I've taken eleven days to get here. I shouldn't have! I must hurry back; I don't want the temple to remain empty for too long." Then, thinking of her upcoming meeting with Yang Mingxue, she felt a surge of excitement and hurried up the mountain. Approaching the peak, Li Ningzhen passed several forks in the path, and suddenly the path ended. She stood there, stunned , thinking, "Could I have gone the wrong way?" As dusk approached, she tried to retrace her steps, but the path seemed to be winding through the woods.
