Chapter 1: The time of clouds and rain; today, the story of love and romance is told , passed down through the ages. The poem reads: " The Purple Spring Palace is locked in mist and haze, wanting to take the ruined city as the imperial home; the jade seal does not return to the sun's corner, the brocade sail should reach the ends of the earth. Now, the rotten grass has no fireflies, and the ancient willows have crows at dusk; if one meets the last emperor of Chen in the underworld, how can one ask about the flowers of the rear courtyard again?" These eight lines of poetry are from Li Shangyin's poem "The Sui Palace" from the Tang Dynasty. Emperor Yang of Sui, indulging in licentious pleasures and unrestrained ambitions, built the Eastern Palace and the Xianren Palace. Rare materials and stones from south of the Yangtze River and north of the Five Ridges were transported to Luoyang, and fine trees and exotic herbs from across the land were also sought. Numerous rare birds and animals filled the gardens. From Chang'an to Jiangdu, more than forty detached palaces were built, each with its own fragrant herbs. He also constructed the Western Garden, 200 li in circumference, within which was a sea, more than ten li in circumference, a square zhang (approximately 33 meters). Islands such as Penglai and Yingzhou, pavilions, palaces, and towers were scattered across the mountains, and the Dragon Scale Canal flowed through the sea to the north. Within the sea, sixteen courtyards were built along the canal, each with its gate facing the canal, and each courtyard was presided over by a fourth-rank lady. The buildings and pavilions were extremely luxurious. When the palace trees withered in winter, colorful flowers and leaves were cut and used to adorn the branches; when the color changed, new ones were replaced. It was as if the pond in Yangchun was filled with colorful lotus and water chestnuts. These were used to decorate the sixteen courtyards after the emperor's visits. He used his exquisite and beautiful music to seek favors, and the emperor was greatly pleased. He even had thousands of palace women ride through the Western Garden under the moonlight, composing the "Qingye Youqu" (A Night's Excursion) and playing it on horseback. His extravagance was unparalleled in later generations. The emperor once looked at himself in the mirror and said, "What a fine head! Who will cut it off?" Later, he was assassinated by Yuwen Huaji in Jiangdu, and his wealth and power ultimately went to others. Later, Bao Rong wrote a poem to lament this. The poem reads: " Willows rise in the mist as the sun sets in the west; the wind blows back on the bamboo bank as geese fly over the beautiful sand." Emperor Yang's spring outing to the ancient city remains; the old palace is filled with fragrant grasses. Liu Cang also passed by Emperor Yang's temporary palace and wrote a poem to lament this: " This place once saw the imperial carriage pass; what has become of the floating clouds and flowing water? The fragrance of the southern beauties has faded, and resentment fills the fragrant grasses in the east wind." " Green willows hang dew-covered leaves before the palace; the setting sun casts a vast mist on the river; travelers yearn for Guangling; the moon shines brightly on the ancient ferry, and the sound of songs can be heard." Now, why do I speak of this today? It's not for any other reason than that during the Zhizhi era of the Yuan Dynasty, there was a young scholar in Qiantang. This young scholar, well, let's not even talk about him. But as the saying goes, "The pillar of Buzhou Mountain collapsed, the Qiantang River flowed backward," it's just like: " Look at the Han dynasty's achievements, the Five Mausoleums are barren, autumn winds blow." So, what was this scholar's name, and what did he do? Let's find out in the next chapter. Emperor Yang of Sui was also a romantic, and this young scholar was also a romantic. Chapter Two: A person from the Jade Pavilion meets Xiao Antong on the way and then seeks his traces. A Tang Dynasty five-character poem: " On the road to the riverside village during the Cold Food Festival, flowers are planted high and low; river mist rises lightly, the bamboo shines brightly in the sun. Tell the guest of Peach Blossom Spring, such things are rare in the human world and heaven; I wonder when I will be able to return with you. " This young scholar's surname was Mei, his given name was Suxian, and his courtesy name was Yanqing. He was only eighteen years old. Because he loved to wander among the flowers and the moon, everyone called him a prodigal son. Today, let us call him the Prodigal Son. His father, once a high-ranking official, was dismissed from his post and returned to his hometown after offending the Imperial Censor Tie Mu. Within a few years, both he and his wife died. This Imperial Censor had adopted a daughter, now sixteen, named Junqing. She was like a sister to the Prodigal Son, and the two lived alone. One day, on the Qingming Festival, the weather was fine—a mix of rain and sunshine, neither too cold nor too warm—with orioles and swallows everywhere, and willows and peaches in full bloom. The Prodigal Son said to his sister, "I'm going out today to have some fun and then I'll be back." His sister replied, "Go with me, brother." The Prodigal Son then straightened his clothes, called Lu Zhu and Jin Fu to follow him, bid farewell to his sister, and went out the gate, heading east. How strange! It was truly a case of: " Those destined to meet will meet even from a thousand miles away; those not destined will never meet even face to face." Suddenly, a group of people in red and green approached. What kind of people were they? This is the grave-sweeping site for Wang Jiansheng. Many women, dressed in fashionable new clothes and wearing heavy or light makeup, happened to meet here. The prodigal son, unable to avoid them, stood on the side of the steps, but still stole glances.

Among them was a woman dressed in white, nearing twenty, with eyes like autumn waters and eyebrows like spring mountains. Her beauty was beyond description, her grace beyond compare, like a fairy maiden from the heavens, or Chang'e from the moon.
The prodigal son, upon seeing her, was utterly captivated, stunned for half a day. He thought to himself, "I've never seen a woman like her before. It's a pity she's not my beloved wife; my life is now in your hands."
Jin Fu chuckled inwardly, saying, "My lord, you've done well again today."
The prodigal son said, "Lu Zhu, come with me and follow her from afar. Find out what kind of family they are, inquire thoroughly, and if we can get them to pay their respects, I'll be done with it."
Who was Lu Zhu? This Lu Zhu was only sixteen years old, beautiful as a woman, and exceptionally clever and intelligent.
The prodigal son loved her dearly, as if she were his wife.
Lu Zhu immediately replied, "What my lord says, I will go."
She returned shortly afterward.
The prodigal son asked, "Lu Zhu, how did your inquiry go?"
Lu Zhu replied, "I'm telling you, sir, this family isn't just anyone; it's the Wang family of the Imperial Academy student in the West Gate. This young woman in white is the Imperial Academy student's wife. She was on her way to pay respects at a grave outside the North Gate and passed by here. Her servant boy, who was once my classmate and friend, is telling the truth. I asked him who this old woman was, and he said she was a female attendant, whom my lady adores and can't bear to be apart from for even a moment. I also asked him her name, and he said it was Zhang, and she lived at the entrance of Nanwanzi. But he didn't tell her anything else. I don't know what you mean, sir."
The prodigal son said, "You're quite accurate."
Lu Zhu said, "According to what Lu Zhu said, the key lies with Granny Zhang."
The prodigal son said, "You're right. I'll go back and decide what to do next."
The three of them then returned. It is truly a case of:
A few words clear the path down the mountain, a few words evoke the person from a dream.
What will happen next? Let's find out in the next chapter.
What a fine example of Lu Zhufu as the chief strategist of the central army! Good riddance, good riddance. (
