Misunderstood Love - Part 1: My Darling Son Chapter 12

Yan Fei rushed to the orphanage, and as soon as he arrived at the gate, he saw Aunt Zhang waiting for him.
"Yan Xiao is locked up in the attic by herself and won't see anyone. You'd better go later." Aunt Zhang went straight to the point as soon as she saw Yan Fei.
"Oh," Yan Fei glanced at the attic. It was dark, with no lights on. The child liked to hide in dark places when he was in a bad mood. "How did he get here?"
Yan Fei looked down at Aunt Zhang, who was not even as tall as his shoulder. The latter rolled her eyes and stared at Yan Fei with amusement, as if she had heard something ridiculous.
"Shouldn't I be asking you that?" Aunt Zhang put her hands on her round waist. "Did you do something to upset him? Otherwise, why would he run back here..." She glanced at the attic. "I was really startled just now. He ran back all by himself. This place isn't close to your house... I think he must have carefully memorized the way when he left, so he could come back anytime if you treat him badly in the future."
Yan Fei nodded; this was indeed something Yan Xiao would do.
As soon as Yan Fei nodded, Aunt Zhang's eyebrows shot up. "So you really did bully Yan Xiao?"
Startled by her expression, Yan Fei hurriedly shook his head and waved his hands, "No, no, how could I possibly bully my own son?... But something did happen."
Under Aunt Zhang's glare, Yan Fei recounted the whole story in detail, and after he finished, he saw her look thoughtful.
"What's wrong?" Seeing her hesitant expression, Yan Fei couldn't help but urge her.
Looking at Yan Fei's expression, Aunt Zhang said cautiously, word by word, "Actually, your wife is not dead."
Upon hearing this, Yan Fei did not show the shocked expression she had expected. She simply nodded slightly and said softly, "I have indeed considered that possibility."
Yes, he had suspected Shuping's death more than once. He knew Shuping; if she truly had a terminal illness, she would have entrusted Yanxiao to him, asking him, as the father, to take care of her son, rather than leaving him alone in the orphanage, unable to even attend school. There was only one possibility for Shuping to do this—she wasn't dead, but had only temporarily left. She left her son in the orphanage so she could return to retrieve him later; she knew that if she entrusted her son to him, it would be difficult to get him back.
Although he had considered the possibility that Shuping was not dead, Yan Fei's feelings were not as calm as they appeared when he heard the speculation confirmed. After all, she was his wife whom he still loved deeply. Hearing that she was still alive, the joy and complex emotions he felt were not something that could be clearly expressed in words.
Aunt Zhang was slightly taken aback by Yan Fei's outward calm, and then continued to express her concerns, "I've been keeping this from Yan Xiao, but it seems he already knows."
Upon hearing this, Yan Fei was slightly startled, struggling out of his swampy thoughts. "He knows!?"
Aunt Zhang nodded. "Yanxiao is a very smart child. After all, he didn't even see the body. He was only brought news of his mother's death and a death certificate by a stranger. How could he possibly believe it?" She paused and sighed heavily. "That child must have thought he was abandoned by his mother... I remember when we first brought him here, he was like a lost soul, not eating, drinking, or speaking... Now that I think about it, for a child, the blow of being abandoned by his mother must have been greater than the fact that she had died..."
Yan Fei listened silently to Aunt Zhang's words, his mind filled with the tension, fear and insecurity his son often showed. He had always thought it was caused by his son's distrust of him, the man who had abandoned them. He never expected there was such a reason behind it.
Aunt Zhang looked towards the attic and said in a low voice, "He was abandoned by his father once, and now his mother has abandoned him too. Maybe that child always thinks he did something wrong, which is why his mother doesn't want him..."
Yan Fei seemed to understand what Aunt Zhang meant. "You mean he did something wrong this time and is afraid I won't want him anymore, so he ran back here?"
Aunt Zhang nodded. "That's just my guess. You'll have to ask them yourself to find out the truth." She gestured towards the attic with her chin. "Now you should be able to go and take a look."
With a heart full of trepidation, Yan Fei hurried towards the attic. Aunt Zhang's words kept echoing in his mind, and images of his son appeared before his eyes.
The tense expression on his face after his first fight with a classmate at school;
An uneasy figure crouching in the cold wind on New Year's Eve, waiting for his return;
He was afraid of the pranks he might play when he found a new mother;
Even when bullied after being caught stealing, they still try their best to hide it...
Yan Fei was heartbroken to find that Aunt Zhang's guess was correct. This child was afraid of being abandoned again, so she had been cautious, kept her distance, and was stingy with her feelings. She had even memorized the way back to the orphanage... This child was already prepared to be abandoned again...
Yan Fei gently pushed open the attic door. In the dark attic, a ray of silver moonlight shone through the skylight onto the thin figure sitting with his knees crossed.
Yan Fei's heart clenched tightly. He walked over gently and hugged his son's slightly cold body from behind.
"Dad..." The moment Yan Xiao saw Yan Fei, tears welled up in her eyes for the first time. "I'm sorry..." The poor child tried her best to hold back her sobs, her shoulders trembling violently. "I wanted to buy it for Dad... but they said they didn't have enough money..."
Yan Fei stroked his son's hair, feeling a pang of sadness. "Silly child, why did you buy such an expensive thing..." This silly boy doesn't understand brand names; he probably thinks all razors are that expensive.
Hearing Yan Fei call him stupid, Yan Xiao's tears flowed even more fiercely, "Dad...don't you want me anymore?...I...I'll become smart..."
Yan Fei bent her finger and scratched her son's nose hard, then hugged him even tighter.
"Isn't Xiaoxiao's birthday coming up soon? What gift would you like?"
Unexpectedly, Yan Fei suddenly changed the subject. Yan Xiao stared blankly at his father, whose simple and honest appearance made Yan Fei unable to resist giving him a big kiss on the cheek.
“Dad didn’t know what gift to buy, so I decided to give Xiaoxiao a promise,” Yan Fei said, looking down at the platinum ring on his left ring finger—since what happened with Xiao Li, to avoid misunderstandings, Yan Fei had put on the precious ring he had kept for 10 years again—he took the ring off and placed it in his son’s palm. “This is a token of the vow that Dad and Mom made when we got married, a vow that we would never be separated. Now I’m giving it to Xiaoxiao… Dad promises Xiaoxiao that he will always be with her.” He kissed his son’s stunned face hard again, smiling gently, “Unless Xiaoxiao doesn’t want Dad, Dad will cling to Xiaoxiao for the rest of his life!”
