01. A First Encounter That's Hard to Describe
The moonlight was hazy, the starlight was lazy, and in the early summer night, after a whole day of sweltering heat, a cool breeze was blowing, and
everywhere was filled with a sense of comfort...
Not far away, a bicycle moved listlessly. The young man riding the bicycle with his head down was named Li Yi,
an ordinary programmer who had come to this not-so-small city to make a living. It was really not easy, and today he was working overtime again. It was almost midnight, and his stomach was cramping with hunger. His restless mood was quite a contrast
to the cool summer night. Li Yi's meager salary forced him to rent an apartment in a remote neighborhood. The fifth floor was acceptable for a building without an elevator, but the thought of dragging his weary body up five flights of stairs filled him with dread. Thankfully, it was Friday, and tomorrow was the weekend, a chance to rest. Li Yi's home wasn't far; if he stood in his living room and looked out the window, he could see himself on the street . Li Yi sighed and glanced up at the upstairs window… "Hiss…" At that glance, Li Yi immediately gasped, all his weariness vanishing. In the pitch-black midnight, only the living room light was on in his apartment building. A woman with long, flowing hair stood conspicuously at the window, seemingly watching him from below… “Clang…” Startled, Li Yi’s bicycle went out of control and crashed into a trash can on the side of the road… “Damn it!” Li Yi cursed as he picked up his bike, ignoring the pain, and quickly looked back at his window … Yes, that was Li Yi’s apartment. The light was on, and there really was a woman standing at the window. And … she turned her head… she was also looking at Li Yi, standing on the dimly lit street! Li Yi’s breathing trembled slightly, but the scrapes on his knee brought him back to his senses. “What’s going on? Who is this?” Li Yi grimaced in pain, thinking: Is she a thief? What’s with this audacity of a thief? Stealing something and then standing at the window for a while—what’s the meaning of that? But no matter who was standing at the window, he couldn't stay away from home. Li Yi pushed his bike and hurried into the residential area. Before going upstairs , he grabbed a sizable wooden stick and held it in his hand, just in case… His lonely footsteps echoed in the empty midnight stairwell, causing the old motion-activated lights to flicker on and off… Finally reaching the door, seeing the undamaged door, Li Yi felt slightly relieved, but the light peeking through the peephole confirmed that someone was indeed home. Li Yi sniffed, gripped the wooden stick, and opened the door… Entering the house, Li Yi immediately turned his head to look at the living room window. He saw a woman in pajamas standing with her back to him. Hearing the door open, the woman slowly turned around… Li Yi wasn't a lecherous man, but the moment the woman turned around, his eyes were immediately fixed on her, as if he had seen a lily blooming in the dead of night. Her delicate and elegant appearance, coupled with her long, flowing hair, momentarily stunned Li Yi. Although the woman wore equally exquisite glasses on her delicate nose, the glint in her beautiful eyes through the lenses still captivated every nerve in Li Yi's body. "You... are you Mr. Li?" A melodious voice came, bringing Li Yi back to his senses. "Ah... yes... who are you?" Li Yi was somewhat at a loss. "Oh..." The woman lowered her head and said, "I contacted you yesterday to rent a room and paid the deposit... " "Ah? Yesterday?" Li Yi said in surprise, "Wasn't it a man who came yesterday?" " That was my colleague. Actually, I'm the one who rented it..." the woman said softly, "I've been waiting for you to come back so I could explain the situation. Now that you're back, I'm going to sleep. Goodnight!" After saying that, the woman went into the bedroom, closed the door, and didn't show a smile from beginning to end, leaving Li Yi, still somewhat dazed, standing at the living room doorway. Li Yi forced himself to clear his thoughts, thinking: Yesterday, a man who works at a magazine came to share this apartment with me, paid three months' rent , and then left. So it was for her? She just said that man was her colleague; she also works at that magazine called "Heartbeat"? The throbbing pain in his knee brought him back to reality. Li Yi looked down at his knee, then at the large mirror on the living room wall, and only then did he notice his appearance… He was covered in dirt, a shoulder bag slung across his shoulder, keys in his left hand, and a dirty wooden stick that was crumbling onto the floor in his right. His knee was scraped from hitting the trash can, and his pants had a tear. Ah… what a sorry sight! Li Yi chuckled bitterly, glanced at the woman's bedroom door, and muttered, "From now on, we'll be roommates. Our first impressions of each other are... well, let's just say they're hard to describe..." (Half an hour later...) "Ouch... Oh..." Li Yi's bump on the trash can was quite serious. Not only were his jeans ripped, but he also had a deep cut on his knee, and Li Yi seriously wondered if he had broken the bone. Half an hour had passed by the time Li Yi, groaning, managed to clean himself of the stick and the mud off his body . Back in his bedroom, Li Yi glanced at his phone; it was 1 a.m. The blood from his knee wound had already soaked into his socks. He didn't have any disinfectant at home, so he could only endure the pain and rinse it with water, wiping it with tissues. But tissues couldn't stop the bleeding; Li Yi needed gauze and hemostatic medicine... "Sigh..." Li Yi frowned and sighed, muttering, "The beautiful woman next door... well, she's just..."

"Because I glanced at you a little longer in the middle of the night...you have to take responsibility..."
A
soft knock sounded at the door, and Li Yi immediately perked up: "Holy crap, did she hear what I said and come to take responsibility
?"
Li Yi limped out of bed and opened the door. There
stood the "pajama beauty" he had just met, holding a first-aid kit at her waist, her face pale. Why were her eyes a little red? Had she just been crying?
"Ah...hello..."
As a programmer, Li Yi rarely encountered women in his company, and standing so close to a beautiful woman in pajamas
still made him nervous.
The woman didn't speak, but pointed to Li Yi's knee, then to her first-aid kit.
"Oh, thank you..." Li Yi was about to reach for the first-aid kit when the woman slipped into the bedroom
, placed it on the bed, frowned at Li Yi's knee, and said softly,
"Let me bandage it for you..."
"Ah? I... I can do it myself..."
"Come here."
Since she had asked a second time, Li Yi couldn't refuse. Actually, he quite hoped she would bandage
his wound, so he sat on the bed with an awkward smile.
Anti-inflammatory treatment, hemostasis, bandaging—with the beautiful woman tending to him like this, the pain seemed to ease considerably…
“Thank you…”
The woman, without looking up, was wrapping Li Yi’s knee with gauze.
“I saw everything from upstairs. Did I scare you so much that you bumped into the trash can?”
While the woman was bandaging him, Li Yi’s eyes were fixed on her charming face and her
pearl-white neck, fantasizing about what a captivating sight lay beneath her pajamas.
Startled by her question, he quickly stammered, “Ah? No… but
there’s a reason, you know, a woman standing in front of your window in the middle of the night… um…
but thank you anyway…”
Li Yi kept talking, but didn’t see any reaction from the woman in front of him, unsure whether she liked it or not.
He continued talking, finally settling on “thank you” to avoid embarrassment…
"Hmm..." the beautiful woman hummed softly, biting her lip as she said, "Can you do me a favor?"
"Ah, what is it?"
"I...can I share a room with you for now?" Her voice trailed off, but still clearly reached
Li Yi's ears.
"What?" Li Yi exclaimed in surprise. His first thought was:
Holy crap, is this for real? This happiness came too suddenly! Are you some kind of ghost here to suck my life essence?!
This thought had barely formed when another idea immediately popped into Li Yi's mind:
a few days ago, in another neighborhood not far from here, a woman jumped to her death. I remember it clearly,
could it be her...? Damn, that woman was supposedly a writer for some magazine, what a coincidence!
"I...I..." The woman sobbed, tears welling up in her eyes. "I'm so scared
..."
The beautiful woman's pitiful appearance immediately interrupted Li Yi's racing thoughts. He quickly supported
her soft shoulders and asked,
"What's wrong? Tell me..."
"I...my roommate jumped to her death three days ago. She was my colleague. These past few days, every time I close my
eyes, I see her. I'm so scared..."
Hearing this, Li Yi thought to himself: It really is related to that woman who committed suicide. He hadn't expected they were roommates.
At the same time, Li Yi felt a sense of relief. A roommate's suicide under the same roof would be unbearable for any girl.
Changing places is perfectly normal, and nightmares are inevitable.
Thinking of this, Li Yi chuckled and said, "Oh, I see. I've heard about it too. Okay,
then you can stay here. You sleep on the bed, and I'll sleep on the floor..."
"No, no, I'll sleep on the floor..."
"Don't be so modest. How can a grown man like me let a beautiful woman sleep on the floor? By the way, can you tell
me your name?" Li Yi had been holding back this question for a long time!
"My name is Xiao Ziyi. You can just call me Ziyi."
"Xiao Ziyi... um, your name is as beautiful as you..." Li Yi asked again, "I know you seem to
work at some magazine?"
"Thank you," Ziyi said with a forced smile, "I'm an editor and author for the magazine 'Heartbeat,'
I write ghost stories..."
"Ghost stories!" Li Yi said, "No wonder you think about so many things! You should rest well. I'll go get you
a blanket."
With that, Li Yi walked towards Ziyi's bedroom.
"Thank you so much."
Perhaps because it was only her first day in, Ziyi's bedroom was quite simple, lacking the typical feminine
atmosphere. Toiletries were on a low bedside table, and there were no blankets on the bed, just a large
suitcase.
"Is it in this suitcase?" Li Yi asked loudly.
"Yes, the suitcase is already open, just take it." Ziyi's clear voice floated over.
Li Yi took out the blanket, got up, and was about to leave when a muffled thud sounded, as if
something had fallen to the floor.
Li Yi tilted his head and saw an old-fashioned diary.
Was it Ziyi's diary?
Li Yi frowned, but didn't bend down to pick it up, instead carrying the faintly scented blanket back to his own bedroom

--------------------------------
Ziyi was truly exhausted. After Li Yi made up his bed on the floor and turned off the light, he soon heard
her steady breathing from the bed. He wondered how many days she hadn't had a good night's sleep.
Lying on the floor, Li Yi, despite working late into the night and being utterly exhausted, was still reeling from
the unexpected events of the night, especially with such a beautiful woman lying in his bed… Insomnia was inevitable for Li Yi…
As he tossed and turned, a thought suddenly popped into his head:
Just now… there was a diary in Ziyi's room. Could it be her diary? Should I go take a look?
This thought made Li Yi, who was already having trouble sleeping, even more alert.
Should he go see it… or not? If he didn't see it, he would feel really uneasy, but if he went,
what if it really was her diary? It would be too immoral to peek at it… What if it's just an ordinary notebook? Then I
'll take a look. If it's a diary, I won't read it… But if it's just an ordinary notebook,
what's the point of reading it…
While he was struggling with this, Li Yi realized that he had already involuntarily left his bedroom and was already in Ziyi's room.
Li Yi smiled self-deprecatingly. It seemed that his inner struggle was useless; his actions had already proven his
determination to find out.
Li Yi gently left Ziyi's door slightly ajar. Because he felt guilty, Li Yi only dared to turn on the bedside lamp, then
picked up the diary from the floor and, in the dim light, opened the first page.
"Damn! It really is a diary!"
Seeing the date at the beginning of the first page, Li Yi felt a surge of joy in addition to surprise.
Feeling even more guilty, he glanced up at his room where Ziyi was fast asleep.
After confirming there was no movement, Li Yi brought the diary to the bedside lamp and began to read intently…

Monday, April 28, 2014 Today
, Xuanxuan and I made a decision that I don't know if it was right or wrong, but I have a feeling it might
change my life. So I got a new diary to record the days that might not be ordinary…
Today at the magazine office, we had just started work when Boss Wang called us into his office. It was the same old clichés
.
The horror novel we're currently serializing is getting a very bad response, which greatly displeases Boss Wang. This is the third time he's called
Xuanxuan and me in for a talk.
I'm used to Boss Wang's criticism, but so many consecutive days of negative reader reviews are making me, the main author of *Heartbeat*, extremely unhappy. Unfortunately, my inspiration is gone, and I just can't write
anything scary . Even at noon, Xuanxuan was still sulking. I knew she'd only been at the magazine for a little over six months. For the first few months, she'd helped me gather material while I did the writing, and things had been going well. Lately, she 'd suddenly suffered a setback, and then been criticized by her boss repeatedly, so it was understandable that she was upset. During lunch, I tried to comfort her, but she ignored me completely. It wasn't until almost the end of the workday that she came to my computer and whispered, "Sister Ziyi, I've thought of a way to find inspiration. Want to try it?" "What way? Tell me?" Xuanxuan blinked and said, "Do you remember the first piece of material I helped you find when I first came to 'Heartbeat'...?" Hearing this, my heart skipped a beat. Xuanxuan was talking about a horror novel I'd written six months ago about a Ouija board. The protagonist was a horror novelist who, unable to find inspiration, played with the Ouija board with a friend, only to get himself into trouble... I never imagined our current situation would be so similar to the plot of that novel! My first reaction was, of course, to object, but when we got home, it was almost midnight… Xuanxuan and I still turned off all the lights, drew the curtains, lit red candles, laid out rice paper, and drew the symbols mentioned in the novel… Then, facing each other, through the flickering candlelight, I crossed the backs of my right hands, held a ballpoint pen upright on the rice paper… At that moment, my mind went blank; I completely forgot what I was supposed to chant to summon the spirit, I just closed my eyes, feeling time slip away, and my suspended right hand growing increasingly numb and sore… “Whoosh…whoosh…” That was the sound of the curtains being blown by the wind; I had forgotten to close the window… My right hand, without support, grew increasingly tired and started to tremble. Wait… was it just trembling? I opened my eyes and saw Xuanxuan staring intently at the ballpoint pen. I glanced down and saw the pen slowly wriggling under some inexplicable force… I was a little surprised, but thought to myself: it must be because our hands are tired! “Hehe…” Just as this thought crossed my mind, a slightly mocking female laugh suddenly rang in my ears… It definitely wasn’t Xuanxuan’s voice! This really gave me a cold sweat. I immediately looked at Xuanxuan, who also looked at me in horror. Had she heard it too? We stared at each other, afraid to make any move, unsure of what to do next. We could only clearly hear each other ’s breathing growing heavier and trembling… “Ding-dong! Hello, please open the door!” “Ah!!” The sudden doorbell made Xuanxuan and me scream in unison, and we both dropped our pens . The curtains fluttered, a cool breeze swept in, extinguishing the candles and plunging the room into darkness… I grabbed Xuanxuan's hand, feeling her shared fear: who could be ringing the doorbell in the middle of the night! We waited together, waiting for the doorbell to ring again. If someone had really come to visit in the middle of the night, the doorbell would surely ring again… But after a few silent minutes, what we heard was laughter again… “Hehe…hehehe…hahaha…” The laughter went from barely audible to becoming clearer and more exaggerated. Despite my fear, the corners of my mouth involuntarily twitched upwards along with the laughter… I really couldn't take it anymore. I shook off Xuanxuan's hand, stood up abruptly, and slammed the light switch on the wall … The lights came on! The laughter stopped, the fluttering curtains returned to silence, leaving only me with a strange smile still lingering on my lips, looking at Xuanxuan's pale face and tearful eyes.

The experience of playing with the Ouija board felt like a nightmare. I forgot when it started, and it ended so suddenly.
I don't even know if the laughter I heard was real...
But one thing is certain: the doorbell really rang! There was definitely someone outside! At least... something
rang the doorbell...
Afterwards, Xuanxuan was too scared to go back to sleep alone, so she stayed in my bed and wouldn't let me
turn off the light.
Only half an hour has passed since that experience, and neither Xuanxuan nor I have dared to mention it. She
went to bed on her own, and I don't know if she's asleep or not.
As for me, I quickly found a new diary and wrote everything down.
Summoning the Ouija board, I didn't follow the steps in the novels, nor did I perform any rituals to send the spirit away
. A doorbell rang, startling Xuanxuan and me apart, and everything was forgotten...
Was the laughter real? And who rang the doorbell? What kind of beginning is this?
—00:24 AM— Sigh, a sleepless night…
**********
Li Yi looked at the first entry in his diary, his brows furrowing deeper and deeper. By the time he finished reading, his palms were covered in a fine layer
of sweat. He wondered to himself:
Is this Zi Yi's latest horror novel, or her real experience? If it's a novel, shouldn't it
be typed out on a computer? If it's a real experience, this…
Li Yi quickly took out his phone and glanced at the date: June 14, 2014, Saturday,
1:56 AM.
Then he looked at the beginning of the diary: April 28, 2014, Monday.
More than a month and a half had passed. Driven by curiosity, Li Yi didn't care about anything else. He let out a soft
sigh and was just about to turn to the next page…
"Ding-dong!"
A sudden doorbell rang, startling Li Yi so much that he dropped the diary!
It was already 2 AM. Who could it be?!
"Ding-dong!"
Another doorbell rang!
Li Yi forced himself to stand up, put the diary back, and walked through the dimly lit living room
to the door. Looking through the peephole, he vaguely saw what appeared to be a girl.
Li Yi frowned but opened the door anyway. The instant the door opened, a dark figure and
a gust of wind carrying a faint fragrance swept in. Before Li Yi could understand what was happening, he was lying on his back on the floor,
a pistol pressed against his forehead!
"Sister?"
Zi Yi's voice suddenly rang out. She turned on the living room light and saw Li Yi lying on the floor,
while her sister, dressed in a black police uniform, knelt on one knee at Li Yi's chest, her right knee pressing against his chin
, holding a pistol to his head!
It was all a misunderstanding!
After a few apologies, Zi Yi's sister put away the pistol and helped Li Yi up. Only then did Li Yi see the
policewoman's face clearly—she looked exactly like Zi Yi! Although she lacked glasses, she was equally
beautiful!
Ziyi's older sister wore a simple ponytail, exuding a sleek and spirited air. Standing at the same
height as Ziyi, 170 centimeters, her long, slender legs were encased in a tight-fitting police uniform,
highlighting her graceful and exquisite figure, making her impossible to look away from. Just moments ago, such a beautiful woman with a perfect figure had been kneeling before him
. Although the position wasn't ideal, Li Yi still felt a little excited recalling it…
Gazing at Ziyi's sister's perfect figure, Li Yi secretly thought: Ziyi, I wonder
if your loose pajamas also conceal a pair of long legs just like your sister's!
"I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry," Zi Yi's clear voice interrupted Li Yi's illusion.
Zi Yi's sister smiled apologetically,
"Zi Yi is my twin sister. My name is Xiao Xiao."
(To be continued)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Author's Note: The names of the two female protagonists in this novel are borrowed from the
female protagonists of a novel called *Soul Travels the World*. I hope the author of that novel won't be angry, hahaha! Also, this novel
seems to have a rather long prelude, but don't worry, this is my first time writing something, and it has been
conceived over a long period. The best is yet to come! Please be understanding and offer your feedback!
