My Darling - Chapter 43: The Sniper

"Watch out—" With a low growl, he grabbed her and slammed her to the ground, then quickly rolled her behind the counter. Ouyang Ning was dizzy and disoriented, not knowing what was happening. All she heard was something shattering on the floor. Then, the entire jewelry store was filled with the piercing sound of an alarm.
Gunshots rang out outside the store. Inside, only a few employees and the couple remained. The employees were now terrified and scrambled under the counter. Just then, one of Kang Chenyi's subordinates rushed in. "Boss, they're hiding too well. There are snipers everywhere. There's no way out." Even with the situation so unfavorable, the man's voice remained calm.
Kang Chenyi sneered, "Hmph! They still won't give up!"
"Kyoko, don't worry about me. Tell the brothers to hide themselves and retreat if they can! Miss Ouyang is in your care; make sure she is well protected."
The man in black offered no objection to the man's words, respectfully and solemnly replying, "Yes!"
Ouyang Ning's face turned deathly pale with fright, and she clung to his waist, trembling uncontrollably. He stroked her face, his heart aching, and said, "If the police come, we'll probably be dead too. I'll rush out first. You and Jingzi stay here and wait until they leave before going out." He squeezed her hand and added, "Don't be afraid, trust me!"

He hugged her tightly, then skillfully drew his gun from his waist, cocked it, and rushed out without looking back. He couldn't let her be exposed to those people.

Ouyang Ning nestled in Yu Jing's arms, peeking outside. The shop entrance, shrouded in night, was deserted, and screams from passersby could be heard from a distance. A tall figure stood not far behind Kang Chenyi; her face was obscured, but from her slender frame and melodious voice, it was clear she was a stunning beauty.
The woman, dressed in camouflage, was clean-cut and exuded a heroic air. A bewitching smile graced her exquisitely beautiful face. "Instructor, it's been a long time..."
The man didn't answer; he simply stood there casually, yet a powerful aura suddenly emanated from him. The two young men behind the woman, also dressed in camouflage, didn't move, but their flustered expressions revealed their fear of the man in front of them.
With his back to her, Kang Chenyi's voice was as gentle as ever, yet it carried a chilling coldness. "Mr. He really flatters me. A mere Kang Chenyi has actually mobilized the entire 'Flowing Shadow' team."

At that moment, the woman raised her hand and gestured. The assassins hidden in the shadows quickly gathered like shadows, surrounding Kang Chenyi in the blink of an eye. One of them stepped aside, creating an opening in the encirclement, and respectfully said, "Instructor, please!"
Passersby in the distance were terrified but couldn't help but watch the group of more than ten people gathered together. Apart from the handsome man who was surrounded and dressed casually, the others looked like soldiers from a military camp. Although they were of different skin colors, they wore the same uniforms and were well-trained with synchronized movements.

Ouyang Ning watched helplessly as the man was taken away. Yu Jing told her that those people were assassins. In the past, Kang Chenyi would never have rushed out without a plan, but because she was by his side, he exposed himself to danger for her safety.
She stared at him in surprise, her mind blank. Soon, sirens blared in the street, and moments later, fully armed police stormed in. Yu Jing helped her to her feet, sneering, "In the movies, the police are always a step behind; it seems it's the same in real life..."
She couldn't hear what they were saying, and a worry and fear she had never felt before filled her heart. Who were those people? Why were they arresting him? He seemed to be injured, and she didn't know what they would do to him... What if he died? She looked up in terror, and large tears streamed down her face.
Suddenly, a loud "bang!" snapped Ouyang Ning back to her senses. She looked up blankly and realized she was sitting in the police station's break room. The door had been kicked open, and in a blur, her face was pressed against a strong chest. Feeling the familiar embrace, she reached out and clutched the man's shirt tightly, sobbing softly, "Daddy..."
"Don't be afraid, Daddy's here..."
