Love in Beijing - Chapter 1, Thursday, March 13, 2003, Sunny

Today, I'm going to Beijing for a meeting. Originally, I wasn't supposed to be on this official trip, but after much effort and with the help of my colleague, the deputy director who's also going to Beijing for the meeting, I was able to make it.
My efforts to travel for work stem from my dear Qiu-mei. Qiu-mei and I have known each other online for three years, and we've fallen in love. Because of business trips and busy work schedules, I haven't seen her online for a long time. Although we often leave messages, they only deepen our longing for each other.
Two days ago, I received another message from her saying that she had been recognized as an advanced worker and would be going to Beijing on the 19th to participate in an officially organized event. She said that she would come to an internet cafe to chat with me after she arrived in Beijing.
I was thrilled to hear she was going to Beijing, because my boss was going to Beijing to attend a meeting organized by a higher authority. This boss is my deputy director brother. If I could get a chance to go to Beijing, I could see my dear Qiu! I immediately left her a message saying I would do my best to go to Beijing to see her.

I wasn't giving up. One of the deputy directors in my unit is a close friend of mine, and he's the one who's going to Beijing for the meeting. I knew he wanted me to go with him, so I discussed it with him. He also felt conflicted because he wasn't in charge of me, and the director in charge had already rejected my request.
Just when I was feeling helpless, somehow, my department head found out about my thoughts. The department head was younger than me, and we were friends, often hanging out together. He actively helped me lobby the deputy director in charge, telling him that although there were many things to do at the moment, it wouldn't matter if I took a break. After he spoke to him, the deputy director actually agreed and even let me replace someone else.

Before leaving the city, I told a friend in Beijing about my plans and excitement after arriving in the capital. He warned me not to get too excited, saying that Qiu Meimei might not be a dinosaur. But I thought, Qiu Meimei and I are truly in love, and even if she were a dinosaur, I wouldn't mind.

Around 4 PM, our plane landed smoothly at Beijing Capital International Airport. Around 5 PM, our group arrived by car in front of Tiananmen Square on Chang'an Avenue. The "Two Sessions" had just ended, and as the delegates' motorcade passed by, all other vehicles had to give way. Although we waited a long time, we were still very happy; after all, we had arrived in Beijing, and the hope of meeting Qiu Meimei (our friend) had been realized…
In the evening, my friends in Beijing arranged for us to go to the Jinxiuyuan Karaoke Bar near Chaoyang Park, but I had no interest in the girls and didn't mention it.
