Love (Dreaming) - Chapter 12

I got up before the alarm went off. I don't remember what I dreamt about, but the emptiness I felt upon waking, the feeling of losing the dream, immediately returned. I unconsciously put on my clothes and washed up in the bathroom.
It wasn't until I saw the person I dreamt of at the dinner table that I regained some clarity.
I dreamt I was eating breakfast with my head down. I looked at the dream, then at my mom, who looked at me too, and then suddenly said with an incredulous expression, "Xiaohui...you put too much ketchup on it...!" At a time like this, I wasn't really in the mood to appreciate the taste of the breakfast in my mouth. Looking at the ketchup on the plate, which was almost twice the amount of food, I took a bite but couldn't eat any more.
"Mom... I'm not eating anymore," I said listlessly.
"Mmm." Mom's reply was devoid of emotion. Mengjian still didn't say a word. Breakfast ended in this awkward atmosphere.
Just before leaving, my mom suddenly said, "I'll call your dad in the next couple of days and send Mengjian to him."
"Why!?" Mengjian finally spoke, her tone somewhat agitated.
"If this continues, you two won't be able to control your feelings," Mom said. "So, I'm going to separate you two for a while."
"Why!..." Tears streamed down Mengjian's cheeks, her face filled with sorrow, and she turned and ran towards the door.
"I dreamt about..." Mom exclaimed.
"I'm going after her." With that, I rushed out the door.
The street outside our house isn't particularly busy with cars. As soon as I stepped outside, I saw Mengjian running ahead with her head down, and I immediately chased after her. I was almost in front of her, just 10 meters away.
Suddenly, a white van appeared in my field of vision, rushing out from the intersection ahead. For the van, it was as if it had appeared out of nowhere; despite its emergency braking, it still managed to knock Mengjian down with a scream.
What happened before my eyes seemed too sudden. I was stunned for a moment, and then ran towards Mengjian like a madman.
"dream……!!"
The people on the bus rushed off to check on the injured person. The streets weren't crowded that morning, but curious onlookers slowly gathered around. I rushed to Mengjian's side and immediately picked her up. Mengjian was already unconscious in my arms.
"Call an ambulance...!!! What are you all standing there for...!? Call an ambulance right now...!!" I shouted frantically at the driver while holding Mengjian.
"Oh...oh..." The person seemed to finally realize what to do, and took out his phone from his pocket to call the hospital.
"Ah Hui..." Recognizing Xiao Ting's voice, I turned around and looked around. She was squeezing out from the crowd. "Xiao Ting..."
"Ah Hui, what's going on? What happened if you dreamt about her?" Xiaoting asked worriedly.
"I don't know... I don't know..." I held Mengjian tightly in my arms, my face pressed against her head.
Soon after, the ambulance and police car arrived. "Ah Hui, have you notified your aunt?" Xiao Ting asked me.
"Oh...not yet." I then remembered I should call my mom first. In my dream, I was already being carried into an ambulance, and the police were questioning the driver about what happened. I got into the ambulance and glanced back at Xiaoting.
"Ah Hui, you should go quickly. I'll go to the school to ask for leave for you," Xiao Ting said.
"Okay...please." With that, the ambulance door closed.
...
"This situation... is very strange..." The doctor said to my mother and me, holding up the X-ray images of Mengjian. "Judging from these X-rays, Mengjian's brain or any other part of her body hasn't suffered any damage. In fact, you could say that she's only been frightened, fell down, and scraped her skin a little. The car didn't hurt her at all. But her current condition..." As he spoke, the doctor looked at Mengjian lying on the hospital bed. "Even with such a fright, there's no precedent for her falling into a coma."
"How is that possible?" My mother, who is also a doctor, asked in disbelief.
"I can't believe it either, but the test results are indeed like this," the doctor replied helplessly.
"No, I demand another check-up. Maybe there's some injury you haven't detected," Mom said again.
Indeed, this situation was beyond her logical understanding of the patient's condition as a doctor.
"Okay." The doctor agreed to Mom's request, probably because he himself didn't believe such a thing could happen.
...
"How could this be..." Mom looked at the second examination report and X-ray, but still found nothing unusual.
Having little knowledge of medicine, I could only stare blankly at the unconscious Mengjian.
"This situation is unprecedented. Therefore, she should be kept in the hospital for observation to prevent any unexpected complications."
The doctor said.
"I dreamt of her... When will I wake up?" I couldn't help but ask the doctor.
"Well... we can't be sure either. It probably depends on her own will to live." The doctor then said to the mother, "Please come and complete the admission procedures for us."
"Okay, sure." Mom turned to me and said, "Xiaohui, you stay here and take care of Mengjian. I'll go home to get the things Mengjian needs for her hospitalization after I finish the paperwork." Her words couldn't hide her sadness.
Now, only Mengjian and I are left in the ward. I hold Mengjian's hand, looking at her face, which should be so vibrant, now lying here so peacefully. "Mengjian, wake up, brother needs you..." I murmur softly. I sit beside Mengjian's bed, my head resting on the bed. Was I too greedy? Mengjian wouldn't have become like this. If only she could continue being my sister. It's all my fault, isn't it? I wanted to have Mengjian, but now she's like this. Maybe Mengjian will never wake up again, and I... have truly lost her. Thinking this, the pain grows stronger. Maybe... I should go with Mengjian.
...
"Xiao Hui," I heard my mom calling me. I realized I had fallen asleep sometime during the night. It was already getting dark. My mom came into the ward carrying some towels from my dream and other things.
"Xiaohui, you should go back and rest. Mom will take care of Mengjian."
"No..." I replied firmly.
"Hmm? It's enough for Mom to take care of Mengjian. You have school tomorrow, so go home and get some sleep," Mom said again.
"No," I replied in the same way. "I'm staying here with Mengjian no matter what."
"Xiaohui, you can't do this. You're all grown up now, how can you still be so willful?" Mom said angrily.
"No...!" she said, her voice rising a little. "Mom, you have no idea how important Mengjian is to me...! How can I go home feeling at ease when Mengjian is like this?... Mengjian is more than just a sister to me... I can't lose her. Mom... do you understand?" In an instant, she poured out all her innermost thoughts.
"..." Mom paused for a moment, looked at me, and didn't say anything. She just started taking the things out of the bag and putting them away, then took a chair and sat down next to Mengjian's bed.
After a while, Mom looked at Mengjian and said to me, "Xiaohui, do you really like dreaming that much?"
"Yes." I answered without thinking, because the answer to this question was beyond doubt for me.
"Sigh... You said your mom can't understand you. Do you want to hear your mom's story?" Mom sighed and said.
"Okay." I nodded quietly.
"Actually... you also have an uncle." Mom paused, then continued, "That is, my younger brother."
I didn't say anything, just looked at my mom and let her continue.
"We've lived together since we were little. He's a year younger than me. Hmm... just like you and Mengjian. We've played together since we were little, and gradually, I realized that my brother was too good to me, not like a sibling. When my mom was 16, my brother confessed his feelings to her."
My mom didn't know what to do at the time. She only knew that siblings shouldn't fall in love, especially since she already had a boyfriend. "Is it Dad?" I interrupted my mom.
"No," Mom continued, "After a while, I broke up with that guy. I was very sad and didn't want to think about anything. When my brother found out, he just kept comforting me and sat with me outside the door all night. I was very touched. After that, I agreed to be with my brother, but I can't let your grandparents know."
"I remember that time was very happy. My brother always made me happy and made me feel blessed, but at the same time, it also made me afraid. Because I knew that we couldn't be together in the end, and I was afraid of the day when I would lose my brother."
"Unfortunately, the good times didn't last long. Not long after, your maternal grandmother found out. No matter how much I cried and made a fuss, they still had to separate my brother and me. In the end, they sent my brother to study in another province."
"I was really sad at the time, but there was nothing I could do. However, this sadness was nothing compared to the grief I felt when I learned of his death."
"Dead?" I asked in surprise.
"Hmm..." Mom's usually calm face finally showed a slight change. "That night, the train my brother was on derailed, and he died in that accident." Mom paused for a while before continuing, "Later, I met your dad, and he pulled me out of the pain of losing my brother." From Mom's words, you could still feel how much she grieved for her brother's departure.
"That's Mom's story," Mom said. "Do you think Mom can't understand you?"
"Then why force me to separate from Mengjian?" I asked.
"So what if I understand? You can't be together because you're siblings."
"So, Mom, do you want us to go through the same pain you went through?" I said.
"..." Mom paused for a moment before answering, "I don't know. But I'm afraid that letting you two be together will ruin you."
"No..." I said, "If we can't be together, then let's never get married. Can't we just live together forever? At least that way we can be together, and I'm sure she'd agree." I looked at Mengjian. Even though I didn't know what Mengjian would think, I hoped she would answer the same way.
"But I dreamt that I look like this now..." Mom said.
"Then... Mom, promise me. If I wake up okay this time, then Mom, please don't interfere with us."
"this……"
"I would be so happy if I knew this news in my dream..." I said, feeling a pang of sadness in my heart.
"Hmm... let's talk about it after I wake up from the dream." My mom still didn't agree, but it was definitely much better than her previous firm and resolute stance.
"Did you hear that? Mengjian?" I whispered, touching Mengjian's face. "Mom said she's considering us being together. Wake up soon." With that, I lowered my head and kissed Mengjian.
My mother didn't say anything, she just watched quietly.
I glanced at my watch and said to my mom, "It's getting late, Mom, you should go home and get some sleep. You have to go to work tomorrow."
"I've already asked the hospital for leave." The hospital where my mother works is not this one.
"Then you should go back to sleep quickly. Let's cancel the holiday tomorrow. Our whole family still depends on you to support us, Mom."
I said it jokingly, not wanting that sad feeling to fill my mind.
"Heh... alright then." Mom said, finally showing a smile.
"Xiaohui, you need to take care of yourself..." my mom said to me before she left.
"Okay!" He gave an OK sign. "Mom, don't worry... I'll be fine."
"Okay, goodnight, Xiaohui." With that, he closed the door.
Everything returned to silence. I dropped my forced smile and looked at Mengjian. Although I told my mother this, I knew that Mengjian might just fall asleep and never wake up again. The thought made my heart feel like it was breaking. Under the warm orange light, Mengjian's peaceful face was bathed in light. I took Mengjian's hand and said to her…
"I dreamt that... Mom finally agreed to our relationship... Please wake up... I really can't live without you..." It was just the two of us, and I couldn't hold back my tears any longer, letting them flow freely.
When I woke up in the morning, it was already bright outside, and the slightly dazzling morning light shone in through the transparent window. I realized that I had fallen into a deep sleep on this hospital bed without even realizing it.
On the pristine white hospital bed, the same peaceful sleeping face I saw in my dream remained unchanged—a scene completely opposite to my dream from last night, one where she hadn't woken up. In the dream, her once lively, smiling face felt so real. But now, it felt like fate was playing a cruel joke on me, leaving me with only empty joy in my dream.
The sky outside the window suddenly darkened, and the sun disappeared, as if it too was regretting that the dream was lingering and could not be woken up.
"Dream...why don't you want to wake up?" I said to the unconscious Dream. Although I knew Dream couldn't answer me. I held Dream's hand tightly, hoping she could feel the strength I wanted to convey in the darkness, helping her return to the vibrant Dream she once was.
However, things didn't go as planned. I sat there blankly until noon, when my mom, Xiaoting, and Ling came to visit Mengjian. I guess we met on the way.
"How was your dream about her?" Xiaoting asked me. I looked at the dream and shook my head helplessly. "Still the same."
"Ah Hui...you look terrible," Xiaoting said. "Go home and rest."
"No... I won't go back. I want to stay with Mengjian forever." I know that, in my own humanity, staying by my sister's bedside, whose wake-up time is uncertain, will only increase the worries of those who care about me. But I just can't bring myself to leave Mengjian here alone.
"Do you think you can wake up from your dream just by looking like this?" my mother retorted, her tone a bit harsh, seemingly oblivious to the presence of strangers. Faced with such a statement, I was speechless.
"Ah Hui, go home and rest. You'll ruin your health if you keep going like this," Xiao Ting advised me.
"Maybe I really should take a break," I thought to myself as I walked home, my mind a jumble of thoughts.
Xiaoting wanted to drive me back, but I declined. I didn't want her to see me looking so exhausted. I did rest, but what about the dream?
She was still in the dark.
Actually, it's not so much that I'm unwilling to leave Mengjian, but rather that I'm afraid to leave her. I'm afraid that once I leave her, I'll lose her. What would life be like without Mengjian? It would probably be just like it is now…
But I just can't accept it no matter what.
If I stay by her side in my dreams, will she wake up? I don't know. But I prefer to believe it, because I truly cannot live without her.
