"He also bestowed this favor upon civil officials. He once wrote a door couplet for the scholar Tao Anyu: 'Unparalleled in strategy of the dynasty; First in literary talent of the Hanlin Academy.'"

One year, before New Year's Eve, he issued an edict: 'All officials and commoners must add a pair of Spring Festival couplets to their doors.' He even personally went to check on its implementation. "Once, Emperor Taizu and Marshal Xu were playing chess by Mochou Lake. Their skills were evenly matched, a true contest of equals

. In chess, everyone has their winners and losers. Emperor Taizu, in high spirits, made a bet with Xu Da, offering Mochou Lake as the wager: if Xu Da won, Zhu Yuanzhang would bestow the lake upon him." "After a hard-fought game, Emperor Taizu ultimately lost to Xu Da. Emperor Taizu indeed granted Mochou Lake to Xu Da and built a magnificent pavilion there, named 'Victory Pavilion.' This is the origin of the pavilion's name. Truly, the Emperor's grace was boundless, and his fame spread throughout the world."

"However, Xu Da, due to his outstanding military achievements, always considered himself to have contributed to the founding of the nation. He was always arrogant and domineering, and now, having defeated the emperor in a game of chess and been granted a lake and a pavilion, he considered it a glorious achievement. Therefore, he held a grand banquet at the 'Victory Chess Pavilion,' making a big show of it and inviting his colleagues, both civil and military officials, to drink and celebrate. During the banquet, after drinking and eating to their hearts' content, they would compose poems and couplets for amusement."

"One minister composed a couplet about Mochou Lake. The poem reads: 'Occupying the entire lake of green water and lotus blossoms, defeating the emperor in a game of chess, behold the ancient carved beams and tortoiseshell ornaments, and the swallows flying in pairs in the Lu family courtyard!' This couplet not only embellishes the beautiful scenery of Mochou Lake but also alludes to the story of the Ming Taizu losing a game of chess to Xu Da, the Prince of Zhongshan."

"When it was Liu Bowen's turn to recite poetry, he saw Xu Da's arrogance and sensed danger. Intending to give him some pointers, he noticed an ancient painting of a dragon roaring and a tiger howling hanging in the hall. Inspired by the scene, he said, 'Brother Xu, I have composed a first line of a couplet. Please write the second line. If you answer well, I will drink; if you answer poorly, you will be punished with double the amount of wine.' Xu Da happily replied, 'Please enlighten me, strategist!' Liu Bowen then composed the first line: 'A half-finished game of chess, the chariot without wheels, the horse without a saddle, the cannon without smoke, the pawn without rations, a shout of 'Checkmate!' Beware!"

When Xu Da answered the second line, he was also moved by the scene. He saw a painting of "Dragon Roaring and Tiger Howling" in the hall. He thought that he had fought in the north and south and made great contributions to the Ming Dynasty. It was a time when he was in high spirits. So, on a whim, he casually recited: "An ancient painting, the dragon does not roar, the tiger does not howl, the flowers do not smell fragrant, the birds do not sing. Seeing this young man, how laughable, how laughable!"

"At the banquet, a Taoist priest, whose name was unknown, saw that Xu Da's couplet was quite good. The couplet used paintings to represent chess pieces, and the wording was both elegant and logical. It was truly remarkable that Xu Da, who had spent half his life on the battlefield, could come up with such a good couplet. However, the couplet revealed an arrogant and domineering air, so I couldn't help but shake my head and sigh, saying, 'Your Highness! Your mastery of chess is extremely profound. I am truly impressed! I am truly impressed!' Xu Da said proudly, 'Hmph! When it comes to playing chess, I'm not bragging, I am invincible. Even the current emperor is my defeated opponent!'"

Seeing his arrogance, the old Taoist said, "Your Highness! The officialdom is like a game of chess; honor and disgrace, fortune and misfortune, change in an instant. One wrong move, and the whole game is lost! I have a couplet about chess here, which I hope you will use to encourage me." Xu Da said, "Please enlighten me, Immortal Master!" The Taoist then wrote a couplet for Xu Da: "The lake is inherently carefree, laughing at the rising heroes of the Southern Dynasties, none of whom could match the beauty's unparalleled skill; how can one win at chess, because of a wrong move in a half-finished game, leading to the complete defeat!" After the banquet, Xu Da left, the old Taoist shook his head and sighed to Liu Bowen, "Strategist! You reminded him to 'call for the general! Beware! Beware!' But he just didn't know how to be wary!"

Liu Bowen said, "This is the will of Heaven, and the will of Heaven is hard to defy!" Not long after, Xu Da was indeed killed by Emperor Taizu Zhu Yuanzhang, fulfilling the old Taoist's prophecy. In the couplet, the old Taoist placed "beauty" above "hero" in the first line and explained the chess principle of "one wrong move, and the whole game is lost" in the second line, foreshadowing Xu Da's later death. However, Xu Da did not understand the principle of "when the rabbit is caught, the dog is cooked; when the birds are gone, the bow is put away," and could not see through the vicissitudes of officialdom, causing the hero to regret his fate. What a pity!

Every April, Mochou Lake holds a crabapple blossom festival, attracting throngs of tourists; it's incredibly lively. It's a pity we missed the peak season. Brother, how about we go together another time?" Li Se said, "Let's talk about that later! Let's write a couplet instead! By the way, that Taoist priest in your story was really amazing, he could..." "You can predict the past and future, but don't you know his background?"

Wang Bao'er said, "No, I don't know. There was another Taoist priest, younger than him, who could also perform divination. Back when the current emperor was the Prince of Yan, a Taoist priest was wandering the city, casually singing: 'Don't chase the swallow, for the swallow flies high, flying high to the capital.' At the time, no one understood the meaning, and the Taoist priest disappeared. Only after the emperor ascended the throne did everyone realize the Taoist priest's power and accurate predictions. The current emperor, upon hearing this, even ordered an investigation into the Taoist priest's whereabouts! But nothing came of it."

Wang Bao'er's words contained a long story. It turned out that the crown prince appointed by Emperor Taizu Zhu Yuanzhang died early, and his will designated his grandson Zhu Yunwen as his successor. Zhu Yuanzhang's sons were all enfeoffed as princes in various regions. Zhu Yunwen, following the will, ascended the throne, and escorted the coffin to the Xiaoling Mausoleum for burial, posthumously honoring Zhu Yuanzhang as Emperor Gao, with the temple name Taizu, and designating the following year as the first year of the Jianwen era. After Zhu Yunwen ascended the throne, he began to reduce the power of the princes. The Prince of Yan refused to comply, rebelled, and eventually captured Yingtian (Nanjing), becoming emperor, known as the Yongle Emperor. Because of the national crisis, Zhu Yunwen was not given a temple or posthumous title and is still referred to as the Jianwen Emperor. This is the Jingnan Rebellion.
