When I was seventeen, my beloved grandmother had passed away nine years earlier. According to rural customs, we had to burn paper money for the ancestors for nine years. This was the last complete memorial service for the old lady. After this nine-year paper money ceremony, we would burn paper money for our ancestors during the Qingming Festival and before the Spring Festival. So this was a very important event.
Several of my grandmother's children and grandchildren were employed. We were relatively well-off in our area at the time, so we held a very grand ceremony for burning paper money. In addition, my great-uncle was a geomancer, so we had everything that ordinary families would have, and even things that ordinary families wouldn't. In addition to the paper burning that started a month and a half ago (starting from the twelfth lunar month, we used paper and bamboo to make houses and ancient imperial regalia at home with glue), there was also a scripture chanting ceremony presided over by my great-uncle (a total of seven days, three times a day: the first time from 2:30 am to 7 am, the second time from 11 am to 2 pm, and the third time from 4:30 pm to 10 pm). The geomancers beat drums and gongs, chanted incantations, and burned paper money and talismans from time to time. The immediate family members, adults and children alike, knelt in front of the altar and followed the instructions. This is called kneeling incense.
