My name is Xiaobao. I come from a small city, and like many of my fellow "Beijing drifters" and "Guangzhou drifters," I graduated from university in Guangzhou and stayed in this diverse metropolis. I got lucky after graduation and landed a job at a large company. I used a few tricks to find work; before graduation, I rented a room in a village within the city with a classmate. It was June then. I moved all my belongings from school—a straw mat, my computer, and some daily necessities—and slept on the floor. Back then, the rented room didn't even have internet. I went to the Southern Talent Market, but there were so many people; just queuing took one or two hours. In the end, I didn't even submit my resume. The whole day was gone. After dinner, I thought about it and realized this wasn't working. Running around like this was too inefficient. My money was dwindling every day, and if I couldn't find a job soon, I might be starving in a week. After dinner, I told my classmate… We went to an internet cafe and went online to a job search website. I downloaded all the job postings from companies that seemed suitable to me onto a USB drive. I spent a whole day there. The next day, I plugged the USB drive into my computer, bought a beer and some peanuts, and slowly started filtering through the listings. I called the companies that seemed suitable. It worked really well; I got three interview opportunities. So, the next day, I dressed up like a maniac and went for the interviews. At that time, all I could think about was survival. I spent a whole day there and ended up at the R&D center of one of the largest audio companies in China. They provided room and board and paid 3,000 yuan a month. I started working on July 1st that year and was assigned a three-bedroom apartment. Of course, I only got one room. Luckily, the other two colleagues who lived there both had apartments in Guangzhou. One didn't come to stay, and the other slept at noon, so I ended up having two rooms to myself. And that's how the story began.
