Hiding at a colleague's house

Qi Wan'er woke up very early that morning, staring at the curtains billowing in the wind, her heart still unsettled.
She hadn't slept well all night, her mind filled with Li Weijun's image and Li Zilu's passionate confession. She didn't know how things had turned out this way; it was completely unexpected. It seemed she had overestimated Li Zilu.
Looking at the alarm clock beside her bed, it was almost time for work. She figured Liu Ning wouldn't wait for her, and she wondered how badly he was injured last night. She felt terrible. She
dialed Liu Ning's number, but it was busy. She looked at her phone helplessly, tossed it aside, got up, took a shower, changed her clothes, and planned to go back to the company to ask HR for annual leave. She wanted to rest properly.
Back at the company, she initially intended to ask Li Zilu for leave first, but found he wasn't at work. Perfect, it would save her the awkwardness of seeing him.
She went directly to HR. According to regulations, annual leave must be applied for at least a week in advance, and HR flatly refused her sudden request. It didn't matter, since the HR manager was a man, and she'd been very dedicated for the past two years. A few quick flirtations and a little pleading were all it took to get her annual leave. There was no denying it; sometimes, a little cheap flattery made things easier. She easily got ten days of annual leave.
After leaving the company, she didn't go anywhere—or rather, she had no desire to go anywhere. She called Liu Ning, but it was busy, so she went home alone.
She kept thinking about everything Li Weijun had said last night, everything. He asked her for some time, he said he didn't want to let her go, didn't want to let go. While saying these words, he held her tightly. She didn't know how to describe this feeling; she was afraid.
She sat alone on the large sofa in the living room, curled up like a cat, holding the TV remote, her eyes fixed on the static-filled screen. Her fingers kept pressing the volume buttons, from maximum to minimum, and then from minimum to maximum, listening to the sound of the TV, like the sound of ocean waves, so lonely.
"Ding-dong..."
The doorbell startled Qi Wan'er. She jumped up from the sofa and opened the living room door.
"What... is that you?"
Outside stood Li Zilu's haggard face.
"My secretary took annual leave, and I, as her boss, didn't even know?"
Li Zilu's voice was low and tired.
"Oh..."
Qi Wan'er was momentarily speechless. Although she had already handed over her work, she should have at least let him know and approve it. Her selfishness was indeed too willful.
"Won't you invite me in?"
Qi Wan'er stepped aside to let Li Zilu in, then went into the kitchen and brought him a cup of hot tea.
"Shu Chen contacted you?"
Li Zilu took a sip of tea and asked slowly.
"You came for this?"
Qi Wan'er sat on the other side of the sofa, looking at him expressionlessly.
"You woman..."
Li Zilu smiled helplessly and took out a cigarette. "Is it alright?"
"Sure."
Qi Wan'er pointed to the ashtray on the coffee table.
Li Zilu lit a cigarette, took a drag, exhaled a smoke ring, and frowned slightly. Qi Wan'er watched him quietly. For some reason, the melancholy in his eyes reminded her of Shu Chen.
"Do you...love him?"
Li Zilu stared blankly at Qi Wan'er, his eyes bloodshot, like a weary beast.
Qi Wan'er returned his gaze, not wanting to answer, nor able to.
"Heh..."
Li Zilu laughed again, a lonely laugh.
"Want to know Wang Huiyi's story?"
Qi Wan'er didn't answer, leaning back on the sofa, her legs curled up.
What use was knowing or not knowing to her? At this moment, she didn't want to speak.
“About four years ago, we met Huiyi. At that time, she was still an international student, innocent and straightforward, with a very likable personality…”
Li Zilu took a drag of her cigarette and continued, “I liked her… Weijun liked her too, but he didn’t compete with me, and I successfully won her over…”
“We were together for about half a year, and those days… were wonderful…”
Li Zilu took another drag of her cigarette, her voice a little hoarse.
“As the days went by, I found that Huiyi loved me more and more, and I started to get tired of her. Until later, she told me that she wanted to stay by my side after graduation and be with me… At that time, I broke up with her. I didn’t want to be tied down by a woman, I didn’t want this kind of relationship… After the breakup, Huiyi was very sad, and Weijun was very angry. He came to see me and scolded me, but I didn’t listen and started dating other women…”
Qi Wan’er didn’t say anything, sitting quietly with her head slightly lowered.
“That incident…it was entirely my fault…”
Li Zilu stubbed out her cigarette and took a sip of tea. “That night, Huiyi came to see me, but I ignored her and even got intimate with another woman in front of her…Huiyi was furious, grabbed my car keys, and stormed out. I ignored her…”
Li Zilu sighed deeply.
“I didn’t know that Huiyi was actually coming to say goodbye that night…it was all my fault…”
Li Zilu’s voice grew increasingly hoarse, even choked with sobs.
“That night, Weijun drove around the city like a madman looking for her, while I…was fooling around with another woman…Later, when I received news of their accident, it was already the next morning…”
“Huiyi’s car collided with a large truck, and Weijun’s car crashed into the mountainside. Huiyi died on the spot, and Weijun was in a coma for three months. After waking up…he became withdrawn for a year.”
At this moment, Li Zilu laughed sarcastically: “I’m such an idiot…I only realized I loved her after Huiyi died…and I killed her…”
Silence. A long silence filled the living room.
After a long while, Qi Wan'er finally sighed and said, "I'm sleepy, I want to sleep for a while."
So what if he knew? From the beginning until now, she had only treated Li Weijun as a bed partner.
Love was too heavy for her, and she didn't need it.
"Do you love him?"
Li Zilu's bloodshot eyes stared intently at Qi Wan'er.
Qi Wan'er glanced at him, a slight smile playing on her lips.
"Not answering means you're not sure?"
Li Zilu's voice suddenly turned dangerous.
Qi Wan'er stood up straight. "I'm sorry, Mr. Li, it's my vacation time now."
"Is that so?"
Li Zilu slowly stood up, then suddenly, he swiftly moved closer to Qi Wan'er.
"You…"
Qi Wan'er was about to back away when Li Zilu lifted her chin with one large hand and wrapped his other arm around her waist.
"As long as you say you love Wei Jun, I'll let you go immediately..."
Li Zilu stared at her, his bloodshot eyes filled with lust.
How could she say it? Should she say she loved him?
Did she love him?
No, she didn't? No, she didn't know?
How could she answer something she herself couldn't even figure out?
A cold laugh—she could only laugh coldly, staring at Li Zilu before her.
"Let me tell you, unless you say you love him, I won't let go. I've lost him once, and this time, I won't back down."
Li Zilu's voice carried a warning, a resentment.
"Suit yourself,"
Qi Wan'er said calmly, offering no resistance.
She didn't need to explain anything to him, because she didn't understand; she didn't understand what love was.
"Hmph."
Li Zilu released her and stormed out.
After Li Zilu left, Qi Wan'er sat blankly on the living room sofa, curling up in a corner.
Night fell. The light in Liu Ning's living room across the street came on, catching her attention.
Suddenly remembering something, she rushed into her room, grabbed her duffel bag, hastily packed a few clothes, and left her apartment.
Call it escaping, whatever you want, Li Zilu had been here; it was inevitable that Li Weijun would come too. She wanted some peace and quiet on her vacation; she didn't want her life to be disrupted. She wanted to continue living freely.
"Wan'er?"
Liu Ning looked at Qi Wan'er outside the door, blinking in confusion.
Seeing the faint bruise on Liu Ning's cheekbone, she felt a pang of sadness, but she still forced a smile: "I...can I stay here for a while?"
Liu Ning paused, then looked down at the travel bag in Qi Wan'er's hand, and laughed heartily: "You even brought your luggage, how could I refuse?"
He reached out and pulled Qi Wan'er inside.
"I'm sorry...does it still hurt?"
Qi Wan'er looked at Liu Ning's cheekbone, filled with guilt.
"It's nothing, it'll be fine in a couple of days."
Liu Ning put her bag aside and said, "What? You've run away? That man came to your house again?"
"I'm sorry..."
Qi Wan'er lowered her head, not knowing what to say.
"What's wrong? I didn't charge you rent."
"I took my annual leave from work..."
Qi Wan'er hesitated for a moment, and Liu Ning continued, "You were afraid someone would come to your house looking for you, so you came to rely on me?"
"They already came..."
Indeed, Li Zilu had already come to her.
"Oh..."
Liu Ning patted her head and smiled affectionately: "Silly girl..."
"Hehe... I am quite silly..."
Qi Wan'er laughed awkwardly twice, but for some reason, she felt very comfortable and secure next to Liu Ning.
"Then you can stay here with me for now!"
Liu Ning said, opening his arms generously, his posture a bit exaggerated.
"You... you scoundrel..."
Qi Wan'er was amused by his posture and laughed irritably.
Beside Liu Ning, she always felt a sense of peace, as if he were an old friend. Perhaps one could say she was being unreasonable, because she was taking advantage of Liu Ning's feelings for her, and also because she was tired and wanted to escape something.
After helping her pack her simple luggage, Liu Ning said he would treat her well and cook her a delicious meal himself. Of course, he couldn't let her eat for free this time, so Qi Wan'er followed closely behind, insisting on helping.
"Is this how you cut it?"
Qi Wan'er clumsily held the knife and tentatively asked Liu Ning.
"Oh... no... it should be like this..."
Liu Ning took the knife and skillfully began to cut.
"Wow... you're so good!"
Qi Wan'er exclaimed like a child, her face full of admiration.
"Idiot, you're so clumsy."
Liu Ning lowered his head and started cutting the dish again, which she had messed up.
"I am clumsy... By the way, where did you go today? Why was your phone off?"
Qi Wan'er asked casually with a smile.
"Oh... nowhere..."
Liu Ning's hand holding the knife suddenly slowed down, his expression somber.
Qi Wan'er observed him from the side, a sense of foreboding creeping into her heart.
"Could you... boil some water for me? It'll be ready soon."
Liu Ning turned his head, his smile stiff as he looked at Qi Wan'er.
Qi Wan'er took a deep breath and returned a smile: "Yes, ma'am."
Was it just her imagination? She saw the sadness in Liu Ning's eyes; he seemed very unhappy.
She didn't ask further. Everyone has secrets they don't want to tell others, just like her.
Many things are in the past, and there's no use dwelling on things that can't be changed. At least things aren't bad now.
On the third day of hiding in Liu Ning's house, Qi Wan'er realized her choice was wise.
"Wan'er, aren't you really going down to see him?"
Liu Ning slowly walked to the window and handed Qi Wan'er a glass of juice.
"There's no need."
Qi Wan'er took the juice, took a sip, her eyes still lowered, watching Li Weijun smoking by his car downstairs. He was very quiet, just smoking one cigarette after another, sometimes lingering for a while, but mostly leaning against the car, silently.
"Is there something he wants to say to you?"
Liu Ning leaned against the window, her eyes lowered as she looked at her.
"That's his business."
Qi Wan'er looked up at the juice in her glass and took another small sip.
"You woman..."
Liu Ning smiled helplessly.
"Does it still hurt?"
Qi Wan'er looked at the bruise on Liu Ning's cheekbone and couldn't help but reach out and gently touch it.
"It doesn't hurt anymore."
Liu Ning paused, then chuckled softly.
"I'm sorry."
She still felt guilty.
"It's okay..."
Liu Ning brushed her hand away, saying generously.
"Honestly, it was so chaotic back then, and the security guards didn't even come..."
Qi Wan'er grumbled.
"Security? Wan'er, don't make me angry. How could a security guard dare to interfere?"
"So you're just letting him beat people up?"
"Who told him to be the boss?"
"Boss? What boss?"
"The boss of the hot pot, don't tell me you don't know?"
Hearing this, Qi Wan'er froze, saying nothing more, silently drinking her juice.
"He... seems to like you a lot."
Liu Ning lowered her head, looking down at Li Weijun.
Qi Wan'er pursed her lips, smiling lightly.
"Really not going down? Today is the third day, maybe he'll come waiting for you tomorrow night?"
"Who told you he's waiting for me?"
Qi Wan'er turned her face away, then said, "I'm sleepy, goodnight."
With that, she walked away alone.
Was it fear? Qi Wan'er kept asking herself. These past few days, she had thought a lot. Thinking about Shu Chen's words, thinking about Li Zilu's story, and even more about Li Weijun. He asked her to give him some time, and she kept wondering, did she need it? Their beginning was based on desire; she didn't expect anyone's love.
These past few days, she had lived a peaceful life. During the day, Liu Ning went to work, and in the evening, she would always return with a lot of fresh vegetables. Then they would cook together, eat dinner together, watch TV, and chat. Liu Ning was a very reassuring person; being with him brought a sense of peace.
But this day, while cooking, Liu Ning suddenly squatted down on the ground.
"Liu Ning... Liu Ning..."
Qi Wan'er was extremely anxious, seeing Liu Ning's pale face.
Liu Ning's complexion was terrible; she seemed to be in great pain.
"Liu Ning... what's wrong?"
Qi Wan'er squatted down beside her, asking worriedly.
"N-nothing... I just suddenly feel... a little dizzy,"
Liu Ning said with difficulty, her
brows furrowed. "Just dizzy? You look terrible. Should we go to the hospital?"
"No... no need. I'm just anemic... it's nothing. Could you please... get me some medicine...?"
Liu Ning's breathing became heavy, and her forehead was covered in sweat.
"Oh... okay... where's the medicine?"
"My room... turn right, blue cabinet... first drawer—white medicine box."
"Come on... let me help you lie down on the sofa for a while."
"Okay..."
After finally helping Liu Ning to the sofa, Qi Wan'er rushed into his room to get the medicine and then went to the kitchen to pour a glass of warm water.
"Come on, take some medicine quickly..."
Seeing Liu Ning looking like he was in a lot of pain, her heart clenched, and she felt a little sad.
Not long after taking the medicine, Liu Ning seemed to feel a little better. Qi Wan'er squatted beside him, quietly watching over him.
"Are you... feeling better?"
Looking at Liu Ning's relaxed brows, she asked carefully.
"Yes, much better."
Liu Ning breathed a sigh of relief and slowly sat up straight.
"How come you're anemic?"
Qi Wan'er also straightened up and sat down next to him on the sofa.
"Hehe..."
"What are you laughing at?"
"Are you worried about me?"
"Can't I?"
Looking at Qi Wan'er's clean face, Liu Ning smiled with relief, "I'm so happy."
Qi Wan'er was stunned for a moment, looking at Liu Ning. For some reason, she thought Liu Ning looked very handsome and good-looking at this moment, but she felt a little sour in her heart.
"Okay, it's okay, go back to cooking."
Liu Ning patted her head.
"You... take a rest, I'll cook tonight."
Qi Wan'er pulled him, not letting him get up.
"No need, I'm fine now..."
"No."
Qi Wan'er interrupted him, "I'll cook tonight, you rest."
"I said no need..."
"No, Liu Ning, you sit down."
Qi Wan'er stood up straight, hands on her hips.
"Hehe..."
Liu Ning looked at her and smiled with pity, "Okay... you do it, you do it... okay?"
"Okay... that's a good girl."
Qi Wan'er bent down and gently patted Liu Ning's head.
"Go quickly, I'm hungry."
Liu Ning also got excited, half-playing and saying.
"Yes, ma'am."
Qi Wan'er said, then hurriedly went into the kitchen and started cooking.
This meal kept Liu Ning waiting for nearly two hours. By the time Qi Wan'er came out of the kitchen, he was starving, but seeing her disheveled appearance, he couldn't help but laugh. Of course, the meal wasn't very good either.
After dinner, it was already night. As usual, Qi Wan'er leaned against the window, head down, watching Li Weijun smoking by his car downstairs. It seemed that since coming to Liu Ning's house, she had long since gotten used to this, spending night after night like this.
"He's here again?"
Liu Ning also leaned against the window, keeping her company.
Qi Wan'er didn't speak, still keeping her head down.
"You have two more days before you have to go back to work, right?"
Seeing her silence, Liu Ning asked again.
Qi Wan'er nodded, her eyes still lowered.
"Actually, he's quite nice. He's handsome and rich, and I think he likes you quite a bit. Why don't you consider it?"
"What are you talking about?"
Qi Wan'er rolled her eyes at him, then lowered her head again.
“You…”
Liu Ning said, picking up the camera beside him and pressing the shutter button, “Click…”
“Liu Ning, what are you doing?”
Qi Wan’er said impatiently.
“Taking pictures of you, because you look so charming with your melancholy.”
Liu Ning looked at Qi Wan’er with a mischievous grin.
“Who’s melancholy?”
Qi Wan’er turned around, very dissatisfied with Liu Ning’s choice of words.
“You… and who else… with a face… like you’re in love!”
As he spoke, Liu Ning picked up the camera again and quickly pressed the shutter button.
“Liu Ning, you bad guy, stop taking pictures…”
Liu Ning ignored her, smiling smugly as he pressed the shutter button.
"You scoundrel..."
Qi Wan'er roared, lunging forward and snatching the camera. "I told you to take pictures."
She glared at him, her eyes half-closed.
"No...don't take it off..."
Liu Ning stammered, afraid she'd unroll the film.
"Unroll what?...Watch me..."
Qi Wan'er picked up the camera, pretending to take a picture of Liu Ning.
"Okay..."
Liu Ning seemed delighted, standing ramrod straight, grinning foolishly at her.
"Shameless."
Qi Wan'er raised the camera, looking at Liu Ning, and suddenly burst into laughter.
"What's wrong?"
"You look...so silly."
Qi Wan'er couldn't help but laugh out loud.
"What's silly? Look how handsome I am!"
Liu Ning said, striking an even sillier pose.
Qi Wan'er laughed for a moment, then suddenly stopped, raised her camera, and said, "Come on, be serious, I'll take a picture of you."
"Okay...come on, cheese..."
Liu Ning still looked mischievous, watching Qi Wan'er press the shutter button, and said unwillingly, "Again, again, I haven't taken enough pictures yet."
"No more, just one."
Qi Wan'er tossed the camera to him.
"Why aren't you taking any more? I haven't taken enough pictures yet."
"No more, one is enough, so you won't laugh at my bad skills."
Qi Wan'er said, picking up her phone from the coffee table, and hesitated for a moment.
"So you're lovesick?"
Liu Ning leaned against her mischievously.
Qi Wan'er rolled her eyes at him, then looked at the black screen of her phone. Ever since she moved into Liu Ning's house, her phone had been there, turned off.
"If you miss her, just give her a call."
Liu Ning said lazily, sitting on the sofa, playing with the camera.
"What nonsense are you talking about?"
Qi Wan'er said, putting the phone back where it was, and went into her room alone.
Night had fallen, and Qi Wan'er lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep. Her mind was filled with the image of Li Weijun leaning against the car, smoking, looking so deep and lonely, an image she could never forget.
