The Enchanting Lies, Chapter 4: The Shadow

Shuya and Zhuowen had been dating for over a month, and their feelings for each other had deepened. Zhuowen's desire for Shuya's body hadn't waned; instead, it had intensified, leading to his insatiable desires. Every time they met, Zhuowen would find various excuses to invite Shuya to his room for some intimate time.
During this period, Shuya gradually became less reserved, no longer as shy as before. However, Shuya was still inherently gentle and refined, and she wouldn't easily yield to excessive advances, which Zhuowen found somewhat lacking.
Since Junxian learned of their relationship, he could only swallow his tears; what could he do? But his love for Shuya hadn't diminished. To avoid further heartbreak, his only recourse was to avoid seeing them as much as possible.
The bar's lights softly illuminated the beer glasses, giving them a golden hue. Junxian traced circles on the rim of his glass with his finger, staring at it blankly for a moment before finally taking a sip. He was a regular at this bar on Minden Drive. To ease his longing for Shuya, Junxian spent his evenings here, after immersing himself in work during the day; it had become a habit.
After two beers, Junxian was still not drunk, but his mood didn't seem to have improved.
"Little beauty, why are you drinking here alone? Don't you...don't you have a boyfriend to keep you company? Come, come, come...we...we'll keep you company."
A male voice with a drunken tone sounded behind Junxian.
Men picking up girls in bars was commonplace, so Junxian wasn't surprised. He just shook his head and smiled slightly, taking another sip of his beer.
"Hey! You...you two stinky men, get out of here! Hey, you...what do you want..."
A sweet, clear voice entered Junxian's ears, and this voice made him perk up.
"This...this voice..."
Junxian frowned, turned around, and froze on the spot.
Two blond-haired men had squeezed a young girl between them. The men, their eyes glazed over, were clearly quite drunk. One of them said, "What a beautiful little girl! Tonight, let us...let us keep you company. Why...why drink alone in silence..."
He reached out to touch the girl's face.
The girl frowned and turned her head away. The man tried to touch her again, but suddenly his wrist was gripped tightly.
"Let go..."
Junxian pried the man's hand off and shouted.
The two men looked up, their drunken eyes widening. "You brat, who...who are you? How dare you...meddle in other people's business!"
They both stood up simultaneously.
"Shuya, ignore them."
He bent down and pulled the girl up from the chair. This girl was none other than Xiao Shuya, the one he had been dreaming about.
"Let go...let me go!"
Shuya shouted, struggling to break free of his grasp.
Junxian was stunned by her reaction. In that moment of stunned silence, he was punched hard in the cheek, his head spinning. He wiped his mouth and saw some blood on his hand. Enraged, he retaliated with a heavy punch. With a loud "thud," the man, struck by the blow, fell straight into a chair, the momentum carrying him to the ground.
Another man came flying from the side, throwing a punch. Junxian raised his left hand to parry, then delivered a right punch to the man's face, striking him squarely in the nose. The man groaned, kneeling on the ground, covering his face with his hands, unable to straighten up in pain.
Knowing they shouldn't linger, Junxian grabbed the still-dazed Shuya and ran towards the bar entrance. A bartender stopped them midway: "You haven't paid your bill yet."
Junxian pulled out his wallet, not caring how much it was, took out a five-hundred-yuan bill, stuffed it into the bartender's hand, grabbed Shuya's wrist, and dragged her out of the bar.
As they reached the street, a taxi drove by. Without thinking, Junxian flagged it down and opened the back door: "I'll take you home."
Shuya turned away, pulling her hand away: "What do you want? I don't want you to take me."
Junxian was puzzled. Shuya had never been so angry with him before. Was there something wrong with him? Still confused, Junxian said in a low voice, "Shuya, what are you doing today? I'll take you home first."
"Are you deaf? I don't even know you. Who wants you to take me?"
With that, she immediately turned and walked away, not looking at Junxian again.
Helpless, Junxian leaned out to apologize to the driver, closed the car door, and hurriedly chased after Shuya.
"Shuya, it's getting late, why aren't you home yet? Did you... did you and Zhuowen have a fight..."
Before she could finish speaking, Shuya suddenly stopped, turned her head, glanced at Junxian from head to toe, snorted, and continued walking forward.
"What happened to you? Why did you go to a bar alone?"
Shuya stopped in front of a convenience store and held out her palm. "Give me fifty dollars."
Junxian took out fifty dollars from his wallet and handed it to her. Shuya took it. "Come in with me."
The two went into the convenience store. Shuya went to the counter and said to the clerk, "Give me a box of 'Okamoto 300' condoms, wait a moment..." She
then asked Junxian beside her, "What size are you? Large, medium, or small?" Junxian never expected her to buy condoms and ask him such a question. He couldn't help but feel embarrassed. "You... what nonsense are you talking about? Who wants this kind of thing?" "
If you're too shy to say, fine. You have a good figure, so medium is fine."
Junxian was both amused and exasperated, and could only shake his head and smile wryly. Stepping out of the convenience store, Shuya handed Junxian the change and condoms she had received. "I never do things naked with strangers."
"Shuya, what do you mean? Who said I wanted to do 'that' with you? How can you face Zhuo Wen like this?"
"You keep talking about Shuya, and this Zhuo Wen? I don't know a word of him. Is this your usual way of picking up girls? If you want a one-night stand, just say so directly. I can't stand beating around the bush."
Junxian looked down at her profile. Although he hadn't seen Shuya for many days, how could this person not be Shuya? Her appearance, figure, height, and voice were all 100% Xiao Shuya, only her personality and behavior were quite different from before.
"Stop joking with me. I'll take you home and get some sleep. As for that Zhuo Wen brat, I'll teach him a lesson right now."
He took out his phone, about to call Zhuo Wen.
"Wait a minute."
Shuya looked up at him. "It does seem a bit strange. By the way, Shuya should have a phone number, right? Why don't you check?"
Junxian was taken aback, but hearing her say that, he couldn't help but become suspicious as well. He immediately dialed the Lianjiren page, selected Shuya's number, and soon a familiar and sweet voice came through, making Junxian freeze on the spot. Looking at the girl beside him, he saw her looking at him with a half-smile.
"Junxian, I haven't seen you for several days. Is there something you need?"
Shuya's voice came from the phone.
"No...nothing, just wanted to see how you've been these past few days. And I also want to apologize for not being able to keep our appointment last time because I was too busy with work."
"What's wrong with you? You're being so distant, it's not like my Junxian at all."
"Your Junxian? Don't joke around, Zhuo Wen might misunderstand if he hears. It's getting late, you should rest. I'll call you again next time, goodnight."
He hung up his phone, looking at the girl beside him, speechless for a moment. What he was seeing was truly unbelievable.
"So there really is a Shuya. Do I really look that much like her?"
"I'm so sorry about earlier, it was...I was just confused. I just didn't expect there to be two people in the world who look so alike. I doubt anyone would believe it."
The girl pointed to the condom in his hand and smiled slightly: "Do you still want to use it?"
"Stop teasing me, I'm already very embarrassed."
Junxian scratched his head.
"You're quite interesting, practically a rare breed. These days, men who can remain unmoved by a woman's advances are few and far between in Hong Kong. Alright, if you don't want it, I'll excuse myself."
Xiang Junxian waved his hand, took a step forward, but after a few steps, he turned back and said, "By the way, want to have another drink with me?"
Junxian rarely encountered a woman similar to Shuya, and he naturally felt a sense of closeness. He nodded, walked forward, and walked alongside her.
"My name is He Junxian, what's yours?"
"You're trying to pick me up, aren't you?"
The girl stared at him with wide, beautiful eyes, a smile playing on her lips.
Junxian chuckled, noticing her bright, alluring eyes, so strikingly similar to Shuya's—they were almost identical, like shadows. His heart fluttered. "You're quite the joker. If you don't want to talk about it, fine, but this 'hey, hey' thing is a bit unrefined."
"You can call me 'Hey,' it's fine too,"
the girl said, giving him a wry smile. She continued, "You really like that Shuya, don't you?"
Junxian smiled bitterly, but didn't answer.
"I can tell even if you don't say it. Your expression alone is enough. How should I put it? Life is really helpless; there are always things that bother us."
Junxian looked at the girl beside him, increasingly convinced that she and Shuya were the same person, yet their speech and personality were completely different, especially her lively eyes, mischievous yet clever, so different from Shuya's gentle and refined gaze.
The two found a bar nearby, where foreigners made up about 70-80% of the patrons. As soon as the girl sat down, without paying attention to what Junxian wanted, she ordered a large bottle of draft beer on her own initiative. Junxian always preferred bottled beer and was never interested in draft beer, but he didn't hate it either. Since this girl liked it, he had no choice but to go along with it.
As soon as the beer was served, the bartender asked for payment. This was quite common, especially in bars frequented by foreigners, to prevent customers from getting drunk and not paying. It was common practice to collect payment after the drinks were served to avoid trouble.
Just as Junxian was about to pay, the girl stopped him, saying, "You've already paid earlier, so I'll pay this time. Besides, I asked you to pay."
After saying that, she opened her wallet, and Junxian's eyes lit up. Inside the wallet were several gold cards, gleaming in the dim light. This girl was clearly from a wealthy family. Whose daughter was she? Junxian wondered to himself.
"Hey, can you drink such a large bottle of beer?"
Junxian poured her a full glass of beer.
"Don't underestimate me! If you don't believe me, let's drink this."
"I'm not playing with you. I won't take care of you if you get drunk."
Junxian smiled.
"Isn't that just what you wanted? You can use that box of 'Okamoto 300' now."
The girl smiled slyly, staring at Junxian and said, "By the way, that Shuya looks so much like me, and she's someone you like. Don't you find it hard to believe you wouldn't be tempted when you see me?"
After saying that, she picked up her glass and drank half a glass of beer.
"Don't look at me like that, okay? Don't assume all men are lecherous."
"To be honest, so far, I haven't met a single honest and kind man. I can't even count the number of men who want to sleep with me. Anyway, let's not talk about that. Tell me about your Shuya. Just how much does she look like me?"
Junxian smiled, took out his phone from his pocket, dialed the photo section, opened a picture of him and Shuya, and handed it to her to see. The girl had only looked at the first picture when she gasped, covering her mouth with her hand and staring wide-eyed at the person on the screen: "She...she can't possibly be like me..."
"I'm not exaggerating, even the height and voice are incredibly similar. It's not just you, it's astonishing even to me. There are people in the world who look so alike."
The girl kept flipping through the pages, looking at each one with a wide-eyed expression. Suddenly, she pointed at the screen and asked, "Who is this man? He seems to be very close to you."
Junxian didn't even need to look closely; he already knew who she was referring to: "My best friend since childhood, now Shuya's boyfriend."
"Ah! It's him."
The girl sighed softly, looking up at Junxian: "Now I more or less know what happened. You're so pitiful!"
Junxian felt a pang of sadness, forced a smile, and tilted his head back to take a sip of beer.
The girl handed the phone back to him: "I can't believe it. Wait, could it be like in a TV drama, that we're twin sisters?"
But then she chuckled, "Seriously, what was I thinking? It's impossible." "
I completely understand your feelings. Actually, after I found out you two were two people, I thought about it too, but I immediately dismissed it. Shuya, Zhuowen, and I grew up together in Niyong. Shuya is an only child; I know her parents, and I've never heard of her having a sister." "I really want to
meet Shuya in person. I'm sure she'd be just as surprised to see me." "
Who wouldn't be surprised to see someone who looks exactly like them? Give me your phone number, and I'll find a chance for you two to meet."
He paused, then shook his head and smiled, "After all this talk, you still won't tell me your name? Are you some important person with a secret you're hiding?"
"Yes, I'm my dad's darling, didn't you know?"
He then opened his palm: "Give me your phone."
"Who isn't their parents' darling? Of course!"
Junxian smiled slightly and handed over the phone. After the girl entered the number, Junxian looked at it and chuckled, "What's this again? 'Sweetheart'? Don't tell me that's your name, it's hilarious!"
"From now on, I'm your sweetheart, you can call me that."
"Hey!"
Junxian turned his head and smiled, "You're something else, calling yourself sweetheart, this is the first time I've heard that."
"There's always a first time for everything, as long as you call me that a few more times, you'll get used to it. Come on, I like it when you call me that." She
even started to act cute, making Junxian both amused and exasperated.
"What's your name? If you won't tell me, it means you don't want to be my friend."
"Are you angry? Okay, okay, I'll tell you."
The girl leaned forward and whispered, "My name is Kong Xinxin. You were right earlier, I am a descendant of the Sage Confucius, isn't that a great person? Also, I only ever tell my friends my English name. You're the first person I've ever heard say my Chinese name. Aren't you touched?"
"Of course I'm touched. I'm practically moved to tears. I'm so touched."
The two chatted and laughed, and in the blink of an eye, they finished a large bottle of beer. Xinxin wanted more, but Junxian saw that she was already a little drunk and stopped her, saying, "Don't drink anymore. We can drink together another time, okay?"
"It's rare to drink with you tonight, so this is the last bottle, just... just one bottle..."
Xinxin ignored him and ordered another large bottle from the bartender. The bottle was only half empty when Xinxin suddenly slumped onto the table with a thud. Junxian, seeing this, panicked and tried to push her away a few times. She made a couple of groans, then let out a loud "Oh," as if about to vomit.
"No, don't throw up!"
Junxian quickly helped her up and led her out of the bar. They hadn't gone far when Xinxin couldn't hold it in any longer and vomited profusely. After she finished vomiting, Junxian helped her sit on the roadside and gently patted her cheek. "Hey! Wake up."
"Don't... bother me."
Xinxin pushed him away forcefully. "I...we'll drink some more..."
Junxian sighed, sat down beside her, and glanced at his watch; it was already past 2 a.m.
"Xinxin, I'll take you home. Where...where do you live?"
Xinxin swayed her head, resting it on Junxian's shoulder, seemingly completely drunk. Junxian was frantic and asked her several times, but she remained unresponsive.
The next morning, the entire room was bathed in bright sunlight. The beauty on the bed turned over, slowly waking up. Her sleepy eyes barely opened, and she realized she was in bed. Recalling the events of the previous night, she sat up abruptly. Looking out the window, the dazzling sunlight was already streaming onto the bedside.
Xin Xin shook her head to clear her mind. Seeing the room's furnishings, she realized she was in a hotel. Looking down at her clothes, though a little disheveled, they were intact. A slight smile played on her lips as she jumped out of bed. She saw a note on the table, seemingly with writing on it. Picking it up, she read:
"Rent paid. Room key at the lobby counter."
A phone number was written at the end. Xin Xin chuckled: "This silly girl, but...so cute!"
She took out her phone from her purse and dialed the number, but no one answered.
Xinxin returned to her mansion in the South District. As soon as she entered the living room, she was surprised to see her father sitting on the sofa. She was slightly startled. Her father was still at home at noon, which was obviously not a good omen. She walked up to him timidly and smiled, "Dad, don't you need to go back to the company?"
"What time is it? You were out all night and only just came back now..."
Her father stood up abruptly, staring at his daughter with a livid face.
"Dad, don't be angry. She stayed out all night with her friends. I promise it won't happen again."
"How many 'next times' do you have? You're always out and about, driving me crazy. I've decided, you'll get engaged to Anjie next month, so I don't have to see you angry." "
I don't want to!"
Xinxin shouted. "Why do you insist I marry that man? How many times have I told you, you don't need to make my decisions."
"What's wrong with Anjie? He's handsome, has a bachelor's degree, none of that makes him unworthy of you."
"So what if he has a bachelor's degree? Even if he has a doctorate, so what? I just don't like him. I hate him. I won't marry him. If you want to marry him, go ahead, Dad. Don't bother me."
"You… what kind of talk is that!"
The father trembled with anger. His precious daughter was always arguing with him. "You have to marry him whether you want to or not. Don't expect me to give in again."
"Dad!"
Xinxin stomped her foot. "Are you trying to kill me? I don't like him. What good will it do you to force me to marry him?"
"Feelings develop slowly, and besides, Anjie likes you so much, he'll definitely dote on you. What's wrong with having a husband like that?"
"Fine! You want me to marry him? I'll do as you say. I'll vent my anger on him every day, and then I'll find other men outside, making him wear one green hat after another, and see if he'll still divorce me. Don't blame me then."
"What did you say?"
The father almost jumped up. "Dare you say that again?"
"You know my temperament best, Dad. Do you think I dare to do that? Since you want me to marry him, you should think about the consequences first. I'm telling you now, I'm not joking."
"Ah!"
The father collapsed back onto the sofa. "I'm going crazy! How could I have given birth to a daughter like you!"
Seeing her father so angry he was half-dead, Xin Xin couldn't help but feel sorry for him. She sat down next to him and snuggled close, saying sweetly, "Dad, as long as you let me go, I'll do anything you want, okay?"
The father took a deep breath, as if trying to calm himself down. After thinking for a while, he said, "Okay, if you promise me one thing, I can put An Jie's matter aside for now."
"Tell me quickly, what is it?"
Xin Xin immediately perked up upon hearing this.
"Starting today, you'll be working at the company. How about that?"
"Ah...it's that again. I've said for a long time that I have no interest in the company. Dad, really..."
"I only have one daughter. Sooner or later, you'll inherit the company. I've worked hard for twenty years to achieve this. Do you want me to hand the company over to an outsider?" "That
's not what I meant. Dad, you're not even fifty yet. Working for another twenty or thirty years is perfectly normal. Why do you insist I go to the company?"
"What about twenty or thirty years from now? The company will still be handed over to you. Don't say anything more. Either you get engaged, or you start working right now. There's no other way."
"Dad..."
Xinxin sighed deeply.
