11 (A poignant love story)
Wang Hongwu is a man with a troubled past. He initially agreed to let his wife enter the entertainment industry, but later, after his wife's
sex scandal broke, he took her to a foreign land with unique customs. All of this
is inextricably linked to his past experiences. His parents divorced when he was ten years old. The reason was simple—
his father, a mid-level cadre, had an affair. Wang Hongwu's mother was a
woman of fiery temper, intolerant of any dissent. She resolutely left the home she once deeply loved, believing that her son
would benefit more from staying with his father. So she went alone to a foreign land, leaving behind
the place that had caused her so much pain.
His mother's sudden departure was a huge blow to him, as he loved her so deeply.
From then on, he changed, becoming taciturn. He transformed his love for his mother into hatred for his father. He rarely
spoke to his father, and he almost never spoke to the girls in his class. In their eyes, he was a
despicable person—handsome, aloof, and with excellent grades.
After graduating from high school, Wang Hongwu was admitted to a prestigious national university with outstanding grades, and later stayed on to
pursue a master's degree.
Once, on his roommate's birthday, this roommate, named Luo Lin, came from a wealthy family, and Wang Hongwu knew that he
frequented places of entertainment.
At his enthusiastic invitation, Wang Hongwu went with him to a high-end entertainment club. In the brightly lit dance
hall, Wang Hongwu saw many elegantly dressed, heavily made-up single women. He learned from Luo Lin that
most of these women were prostitutes; you could invite any of them to dance without paying, but
you couldn't invite the same woman twice on the same night, otherwise it meant you had taken a liking to her and would have to
take her upstairs to a hotel room.
Wang Hongwu had never been interested in women, so he quietly sat in a corner drinking beer, coldly
observing the crowd on the dance floor. His roommate, Luo Lin, was the complete opposite; he kept changing dance partners,
thoroughly enjoying himself.
After a while, Luo Lin walked over with a woman in his arms. The woman wore a pink dress; she had
a round face, large eyes, and long eyelashes, and looked quite attractive.
"Let me introduce you," roommate Luo Lin said, pulling the woman to sit down. "This is my friend Hongwu,
and this is Miss Huang Ying."
Luo Lin seemed very enthusiastic; he ordered a few more beers and chatted and laughed happily. According to him
, Miss Huang Ying was usually difficult to invite, and now he planned to book her for the night.
Wang Hongwu didn't want to spoil Luo Lin's mood, and he also noticed that Miss Huang Ying wasn't like other
women who were conventional, so he tried his best to appear enthusiastic and courteous, even politely inviting
the beautiful woman to dance.
"Ah, I haven't been this happy in a long time!" Luo Lin said, pulling Huang Ying into his arms. "My beauty, you
know my friend usually doesn't like to talk to women, but today he actually asked you to dance. That shows
how charming you are, haha..."
Miss Huang Ying smiled at Wang Hongwu and said, "So I should feel incredibly honored."
Wang Hongwu said, "Don't listen to his nonsense, he must have had too much to drink today."
Huang Ying looked at him meaningfully and said, "Mr. Hong, I don't think so. I think Luo Lin
is right, because I noticed you a long time ago. You sat here all night without moving an inch. I'm
the only woman you've asked to dance, aren't I?"
"Well—I just don't like dancing."
"He's not Mr. Hong," Luo Lin said. "Just call him Brother Wu."
"Brother Wu?" Huang Ying giggled. She said, "You're all younger than me, you should call him Brother Wu."
"I'm twenty-six years old, how about you?" Wang Hongwu deliberately made himself sound a year older.
"You can't just ask a woman's age," Miss Huang Ying said. "Anyway, I'm older than you."
Wang Hongwu's stubborn temper flared up again. He said, "How am I supposed to know if you're older or
younger than me if you don't tell me?"
"Enough, enough," Luo Lin stopped him. "Hongwu, you call her Sister Ying, and she calls you Brother Wu. Is that alright
?"
Wang Hongwu was about to argue when Miss Huang Ying stood up and greeted someone behind him.
"Hi, Sister Bai Ling, I'm here. Come over here."
Wang Hongwu turned around and saw a beautiful woman in a white dress walking towards them.
She was tall, with a beautiful face, fair skin, and graceful bearing.
Wang Hongwu had never seen a woman as beautiful as this woman in the white dress. Her
beauty was intoxicating, making him feel almost breathless.
Miss Bai Ling quickly approached, smiling as she greeted Luo Lin. Then she asked,
"May I ask your friend's name?"
"His name is Hongwu, he's my roommate."
"Oh, Mr. Hong," she said, nodding warmly.
Wang Hongwu, somewhat flustered, stood up and said, "Hello...Miss Bai."
The beautiful woman smiled gently and said, "It sounds awkward to me calling you that. Since you're Luo Lin's friend,
just call me Sister Bai Ling."
"Sister Bai Ling,"
Wang Hongwu himself found it strange; he felt this beautiful woman possessed a kind of magic—her
actions made him feel both warm and undeniably comfortable.
Miss Bai Ling sat down in a wicker chair next to Wang Hongwu.
"Sister Bai Ling, you've come at the perfect time," Miss Huang Ying said to Wang Hongwu. "Our new friend says
he's older than me and insists I call him 'brother'!"
"Oh? Is that really true? Then you can call him 'brother' then."
From the moment he saw Miss Bai Ling, Wang Hongwu was captivated by her every smile and gesture. He quickly
extended an invitation to her. Her dancing was excellent, and she possessed a fragrance as sweet as orchids and musk that intoxicated him
.
"I'd like to ask you to dance again, is that alright?"
As the first dance was nearing its end, Wang Hongwu couldn't help but extend a second invitation,
fearing that if he didn't make the first move, she would be snatched away by another man.
"I'm a little tired today. I'll definitely accept your invitation another day, okay?"
Wang Hongwu felt regretful and returned to his seat dejectedly.
After a while, Luo Lin and Huang Ying went upstairs to a hotel. Wang Hongwu's mood became increasingly gloomy
. Miss Bai Ling noticed his unhappiness and deliberately made conversation with him, which cheered him up.
During their conversation, several men came up to invite Miss Bai Ling to dance, but she politely
declined each time. Wang Hongwu was very happy about this and asked her why she refused them. She said it was because of him;
he was Luo Lin's friend, and Luo Lin's friend was also her friend.
Wang Hongwu couldn't understand why a playboy like Luo Lin would be so favored by such a beautiful woman like him
. He was extremely jealous of him; it was the first time in his life he had ever been jealous of
anyone.
That evening, back in the dormitory, Wang Hongwu asked Luo Lin how he met the two beautiful women. Luo Lin told him
that it was a few years ago, when he was a sophomore in college. One day, he took Ms. Huang Ying to a hotel upstairs, just like that
night. Ms. Huang Ying had drunk too much that night, and she didn't do anything with him. Luo Lin didn't mind; he still
paid the bill. Before leaving, she said she would repay the favor. A few days later, Luo Lin went to the club again, and she indeed took the initiative
to tell him she wanted to repay the favor. After they were done, Luo Lin insisted on paying her, but she resolutely refused to
accept it. She said that the reason she accepted his money that day was because a friend was sick and she urgently needed the money.
That's how they became friends. Every few days, Luo Lin would go to the club to dance with her. Later, through Huang
Ying, he met her sick friend, Miss Bai Ling. Huang Ying told him that she and Bai Ling were high school classmates, and both
had experienced unhappy marriages. Later, they opened a women's clothing store together, and the business was quite successful. However,
one day, a fire broke out in the store. It was caused by her son, who was not yet five years old, playing with fireworks and setting a skirt on fire. The fire
took her son's young life and left them both penniless. The pain of losing her son caused Huang Ying immense grief
, and she fell seriously ill. During her most difficult time, Bai Ling did not abandon her or blame her.
She secretly went to work as a massage girl in a foot massage parlor, using the money she earned to pay rent, utilities, and living
expenses for both of them, as well as to get medicine for her. The fire left them with a lot of debt, and the money she earned alone was simply
not enough. After Huang Ying recovered from her illness, she also went to work as a masseuse at the foot massage parlor where Bai Ling worked. Later
, through a friend's introduction, they came to this high-end entertainment club. With their beautiful faces, they became
one of the club's most popular dancers. Over the years, they gradually paid off their debts, but time is merciless, and beauty fades.
Years of hard work had taken a toll on their bodies. Now, they only earn enough to cover their daily
expenses before stopping work. They lived together like this, closer than sisters.
Wang Hongwu then frequented the club. He indeed got his wish.
After his first time making love with Miss Bai Ling, he actually cried in her arms. She gently asked him why he was crying, and he said he didn't know why.
He felt she was like his mother, and he had fallen madly in love with her. He only booked rooms with her at the club,
and the only dancers he saw were the two sisters.
Bai Ling realized she had also fallen in love with this devoted boy, but being a woman who had weathered many storms
, she was very rational. She said she could be his lover, but she wouldn't marry him. She wouldn't
refuse to see other men because of him, as she needed to earn a living, and her daily expenses were
beyond what a student like him could afford.
Wang Hongwu was consumed with jealousy whenever he thought of Bai Ling being held and kissed by other men.
To have more time with her, he had to bow
to his father's demands, constantly asking for money under various pretexts. His father never refused, simply believing that his son was grown up and
dating, and that higher expenses were understandable.
Two years later, Wang Hongwu successfully passed his postgraduate entrance exam and obtained his master's degree. His advisor suggested he
study abroad for a doctorate, but to be with his beloved, he chose to stay in City A.
He found a job in interior design; the salary wasn't high, but it was enough for him to rent an apartment and bring Bai
Ling to live with him.
He waited faithfully for Miss Bai Ling to change her mind and agree to marry him, but she refused
. She said their age difference was too great, and she was nearing menopause and unable to
bear him children. She was willing to live with him, serve him, and care for him until he found a suitable life
partner.
When they were together, they rarely asked about each other's past. Wang Hongwu was afraid that mentioning her past would trigger
painful memories for her, while Miss Bai Ling was afraid to face reality. On one hand, she urged him to find a girlfriend soon,
but on the other hand, she feared that day would actually come. She simply cherished every day she spent with him. Her health
had always been poor, and she vaguely felt that her days were numbered; she wanted to enjoy every day she could with him.
One day, Wang Hongwu went to work, leaving his phone at home. Coincidentally, his father needed to contact
him and called him.
Miss Bai Ling picked up the phone and asked, "Who is this?"
Hearing a woman's voice on the other end, Wang Hongwu's father thought he had dialed the wrong number. He said,
"Excuse me, I am Wang Hongwu's father. May I ask who you are...?"
Upon hearing the name Wang Hongwu, Miss Bai Ling's face turned deathly pale. She looked as if she were drunk
or had just recovered from a serious illness. In a panic, she threw her phone to the ground as if throwing away a venomous snake.
The phone was still ringing, but she dared not answer.
Hongwu. Wang Hongwu.
Though only one character different, the meaning was entirely different, because she was Wang Hongwu's mother—Bai
Yunmei.
"No, this can't be true!" she thought desperately. "It's just a coincidence. Hongwu's age
is wrong, it must be a coincidence."
But the voice on the phone was so familiar, a voice that stirred up countless painful memories.
Yes, it must be him!
Bai Ling was plunged into an abyss of despair. Recalling the events of the past two years,
her suspicions were increasingly confirmed. No wonder they felt such closeness upon their first meeting, no wonder his voice and appearance always
gave her a sense of déjà vu—he was her son! When
Wang
Hongwu returned home, he found Bai Ling wasn't there. At first, he didn't think anything was wrong, but
as darkness fell and she still hadn't returned, he became suspicious and called her.
The call rang, but no one answered.
He started to worry and dialed her number repeatedly until someone finally answered. He heard
her crying incessantly on the other end of the line.
"What's wrong, darling?"
All he heard was sobbing.
"Darling, where are you? I'm coming to pick you up right now."
Wang Hongwu panicked. Since he'd met her, she had always been so calm and composed, while he always
acted like a child in her presence, his emotions easily displayed.
Something must have happened!
"Tell me quickly, darling, where are you? I'm coming right now."
"Hongwu... Hongwu... Your name is Wang Hongwu, isn't it?" Bai Ling asked, sobbing.
"Yes, my name is Wang Hongwu. What does it matter?"
"Why...why didn't you tell me sooner?"
"My name doesn't matter. You know I love you."
"You're 27 this year, your birthday is the eighth day of the seventh lunar month, right?"
"That's right, that's my lunar birthday. How did you know? Did...my father come looking for you
?"
"No...no...please don't ask anymore...we...we'll never see each other again..."
Another heart-wrenching sob came from the phone.
"Darling, what's wrong with you? Don't scare me, tell me, please tell me!"
"No, please don't ask anymore, I...I won't tell...goodbye, dear...ah..."
Bai Ling suddenly realized she couldn't call him that anymore. She was his biological mother. They
had unknowingly committed an unforgivable incestuous crime. She had to disappear from his life forever. She couldn't let him
know this terrible reality. She would bear all the blame.
Bai Ling hung up the phone and quickly turned it off.
Wang Hongwu felt he was going crazy. He quickly called Miss Huang Ying, but
judging from her tone, she didn't know what had happened either.
From then on, Bai Ling seemed to have vanished from the face of the earth. He went to the club every day to look for her,
to search for her in places she had been. He inquired about her whereabouts with Huang Ying and other women, but he never
received any news from her.
During this time, he returned to his hometown, repeatedly asking his father
what they had talked about that day, but he still got no information.
His father was very worried about his son. He advised him to come home or go abroad to study, and not to waste
his life on a divorced woman. But Wang Hongwu wouldn't listen at all. He refused to leave
City A no matter what, because as long as he lived in City A, he still retained a sliver of hope of seeing her.
Half a year passed in the blink of an eye. He not only hadn't forgotten the days he spent with Bai Ling, but he
missed her even more. Tormented by this longing, he fell seriously ill.
That day, Miss Huang Ying came to see him, and his sickly appearance filled her with pity.
She said, "What kind of karma have you created! Can't you just forget her?"
He said, "The only way I can forget the happiest time of my life is if I die."
"You really will die if you continue like this."
"What's the point of my life without Bai Ling?" he said.
Looking at this devoted young man before her, Huang Ying knew that once a person loses the will to live,
no elixir can save him.
"Hongwu (she already knew his real name, but she still habitually called him that), if Sister Bailing were willing
to come see you, would your illness get better?"
"What did you say? Do you know where she lives? Yes, that must be it. I don't know why she
doesn't want to see me, Sister Huangying. I'll agree to anything as long as I can see her."
"Alright, from today onwards you must take good care of yourself. If you go to see her like this, she won't be able to bear it."
"Okay, I promise you, I will recover quickly."
Wang Hongwu finally regained his will to live. He recovered quickly, and a rosy glow returned to his face
. He longed to see his beloved as soon as possible.
He naturally didn't know that his beloved was actually his biological mother.
****
Bailing's body was growing increasingly weak.
For the past six months, she had lived as if in hell. Afraid of encountering her son, Wang Hongwu, she
hid every day in a very simple, rented room. She dared not show her face, nor even contact
her friends (except Huang Ying, who promised to keep it a secret). She silently endured
the torment alone.
She was a strong-willed person, having faced misfortune time and again with pride, but this time...
This time, however, was completely different from any before, because she knew she was forever barred from a happy life.
She was originally a very innocent girl. At 18, she was admitted to a teachers' college in her hometown,
and her beauty made her the school's undisputed beauty queen. Her husband, Wang Wenkui, was the head of her education department
, fifteen years her senior. Na?ve and inexperienced, she was captivated by his sweet words and ardent pursuit, and
despite her family's objections, she resolutely decided to marry him. However, her husband betrayed her.
Unable to accept this fact and ashamed to face her family, she painfully abandoned her beloved son
and came to City A, determined to start a new life. But her beautiful dreams were
extinguished by a merciless fire, and she fell into prostitution. From then on, she no longer harbored any illusions about the future
. She began seeking thrills, smoking and drinking heavily, numbing herself in the dazzling, decadent world of nightlife
, until she met Hongwu.
Hongwu's appearance reignited her passion and hope for a happy life. He was talented, charming
, and deeply devoted. She knew she was unworthy of his love, and she had indeed neglected and avoided him
, but her innate romantic nature and the girlish feelings hidden deep within her heart ultimately led her
to fall in love once more. Huang Ying had tried to persuade her, and she had struggled, but all her efforts
were extinguished by Wang Hongwu's sincere and fervent love. She began to love him like a young girl again,
though she didn't expect to become his wife; her age and health didn't allow her any illusions. She simply cherished
every moment with him.
However, fate was so cruel to her! It was like an ugly woman, jealous of her beauty, who
tormented her time and again, inflicting misfortune upon her; it was also like a narrow-minded, inept lover
, jealous of her love with Hongwu, ruthlessly stripping her of her last hope.
More than a year ago, she learned she had a terminal illness—leukemia. She knew she wouldn't live much longer,
but she didn't feel sorrow. She calmly accepted this cruel reality because she only wanted to
spend a short but happy time with her beloved before leaving peacefully. His life was still long,
and she only wanted to have a small part of it to be content.
But even this small wish was taken from her—what a tragedy!
****
Bai Ling learned from Huang Ying about Wang Hongwu's recent situation, knowing he was seriously ill because of missing her.
"Sister Bai Ling, please go see him. He's very ill."
"No, I can't see him," Bai Ling said desperately. "You know, once he sees me,
he'll never let me leave him again."
"You can tell him the truth!"
"No, I can't say, and I won't allow you to." Bai Ling looked into her eyes and said, "I don't want him to
know that the person he once loved was his biological mother. God, punish me alone!"
"But if you don't see him, he might die."
"How could that be? He's so young."
"You don't know, he doesn't want to get better at all." Huang Ying's eyes were filled with tears. She sympathized with
her plight, but she was powerless to help.
"God, what did I do wrong? Why are you doing this to me!"
Bai Ling cried uncontrollably; her heart was broken.
"Go see him first, we can talk about the rest later, okay?"
"But...I'm afraid...once I see him...I won't have the courage to leave him anymore..."
"Then you're willing to watch him die?" "
No, he can't die. He's so young, his life has just begun..."
Bai Ling wavered, because she was truly afraid. For this poor woman, the only person in the world
she cared about was him. The meeting place was set at the Bridgehead Garden, a noisy place with frequent traffic, but few people went there for a walk. The weather that day was gloomy, the gray sky threatening rain. Before the meeting, Bai Ling deliberately got her hair done. She carefully dressed up, applied some rouge , and painted her lips, which were originally somewhat pale, red. She looked radiant, just as she always had, except for being a little thin. Wang Hongwu was already waiting there. He hadn't thought about grooming himself; his mind was only on his lover. He wore a suit that hadn't been ironed in ages, and his slightly thin face was covered in a full beard. "Are you alright?" she asked. "No." Wang Hongwu's eyes welled up with tears again. He stepped forward and hugged her tightly, kissing her passionately until she could barely breathe. She only gently pushed him away, letting him do as he pleased. For a long, long time, Bai Ling felt like she was about to faint, before he finally released her. "Where have you been these past few days?" he asked. "I'm sorry, I...I...it was just a little misunderstanding..." Wang Hongwu gently pinched her lips and said, "You don't need to say anything. Can we go back to how things were before?" "Okay." She had wanted to find an excuse to refuse him, but she couldn't bear to disappoint him. After eating out that day, she went back with him to the home they had lived together for two years. Those were the happiest and most unforgettable times of her life. That night, Wang Hongwu wanted to be intimate with her, but she refused, saying, "I'm not feeling well, can we do it later?" "Okay, but you have to promise me you'll never leave me again, okay?" "Mmm." He held her tightly in his arms and fell asleep, sleeping soundly and peacefully, because she was beside him. Bai Ling, however, couldn't sleep at all. She gazed intently at him—this man who was both her lover and her son.

The young man, in every aspect of his life, captivated her heart, making her willing to give everything,
even her life, for him.
In the days that followed, she experienced both joy and pain; the conflicting emotions defy
description.
Soon, illness began to torment her. He wanted to take her to the hospital, but she refused.
She said, "My illness is incurable. Rather than suffer through treatment, I'd rather
die in your arms."
"What will I do if you die?" he asked blankly.
"Foolish man, you're still young. You must live well," she pleaded. "Promise me you will
marry, have children, and live a happy life. Do you understand? Your happiness is my happiness."
"I will never love another woman," he said.
This was Bai Ling's greatest fear!
"My death is nothing to regret," she thought, "I cannot take away his hope for a happy life."
On her deathbed, she told him everything, because she wanted him to understand that she was not the
one he should love, that he should seek his true love. It wasn't a betrayal of her, but a mother's dying wish
.
Wang Hongwu awoke as if from a dream. He finally understood why his mother had left without saying goodbye,
how much pain she must have endured! He also understood why, during their reunion, she had always
seemed reluctant during sex, only to succumb to his force and become so passionate during intercourse—
because she was enduring the violation of her own son's body as a mother!
He loved her even more!
A mother's love was already great enough, but his mother's love for him was more than just motherly love.
If…if only there were more options, he would give her even more love. But it was all too late. His extremely
weak mother passed away in his arms. His kind and beautiful mother left with her love and longing for him,
going to another world. She went peacefully and calmly, knowing how much her son
loved her—that was enough for such an unfortunate woman.
His mother's untimely death was a devastating blow to Wang Hongwu. From then on, he stopped seeing women and focused on
his studies. Soon after, he earned his doctorate with excellent grades and went on to pursue
postdoctoral research at the prestigious Stanford University in California. Even while still a student, he served as his advisor's most capable
assistant, participating in the design of many famous buildings and becoming a leading young architect.
However, his professional success could not heal the wounds in his heart. For many years, he lived a single life
until Moria appeared in his life.
Moria was the daughter of Wang Hongwu, a university professor. They met by chance at a class reunion. She
looked remarkably like Wang Hongwu's mother, and he was quickly attracted to her. He began pursuing her ardently, and she, in turn, was
moved by the sincerity of this talented man who was widely considered destined to remain single. They fell in love and became an enviable
couple.
Moria not only resembled Wang Hongwu's mother in appearance but also in temperament. He believed she was his mother's
embodiment on earth, and for this, he thanked heaven, pouring all his love for his mother into Moria. He also
inherited his mother's understanding of sex, believing it to be merely a basic, primal physical need for men and women, and that
love, not sex, was the more important foundation for maintaining a marriage.
