【The Romantic Journey of the Saints】Chapter 1: Strange Encounters

This post was last edited by Shakyamuni Buddha on 2019-11-07 06:08.
When Yu Tong learned of his mother's death in a car accident, he was chatting with his colleagues. After hanging up the phone, he couldn't believe it. He hated being lied to, and desperately hoped the hospital he'd called was lying to him! He picked up the calendar on the table and stared intently, but no matter how hard he looked, the date couldn't be April 1st.
He rushed back to his hometown, Suzhou. At the hospital morgue, Yu Tong saw his mother for the last time. Looking at her hair, already gray, and her once beautiful face now covered in wrinkles, she was not yet 50. He wept bitterly. He had always thought himself strong. Twenty-six years ago, his father had left him and his mother prematurely, also because of this damned car accident. At only two years old, he didn't know what grief was. For 26 years, his mother had rejected countless suitors, raising him alone. He had vowed since childhood to give his mother a better life through his own efforts. He was as devoted to his mother as his mother, because of that figure deep in his memory. At 28, he hadn't been interested in finding a girlfriend, which worried his mother greatly. He didn't have many friends; he had several good relationships in school, but once he entered the workforce, those pure friendships quickly became complicated, making him uncomfortable, and the relationships gradually faded. However, he did make a few good friends online, and this decent job was found for him by one of them.
The perpetrator who caused the accident didn't flee; he brought his mother to the hospital, but she had already passed away. Taking her to the hospital was pointless. Yu Tong didn't make things difficult for the perpetrator, only accepting a token amount of compensation.
His mother's funeral ended quickly. He had no relatives. Yu Tong had asked his mother about this when he was young, but she didn't answer. Even as an adult, she still didn't answer, and Yu Tong didn't ask again. He firmly believed that with his own hands, he could provide a good life for his mother. However, more than five years after graduating from university, he hadn't been able to fulfill his wish. Now, he finally had the opportunity, but his mother had left him.
"Having seen the Five Sacred Mountains, one need not see other mountains; having seen Huangshan, one need not see the Five Sacred Mountains!" This is a praise of Huangshan's beauty, and it is also true. Three days after his mother's funeral, Yu Tong came to Huangshan alone. It wasn't that Yu Tong was in a good mood and wanted to enjoy the scenery, nor was it that he was in a bad mood and wanted to clear his mind. In his hands, he held a box containing his mother's ashes. He remembered that his mother had longed to see the beauty of Huangshan, and he had always wanted to find an opportunity to bring her to see it. Now, the trip had finally come, but his mother, whose face was always full of smiles, was now a handful of ashes.
Sitting on the edge of a cliff, Yu Tong fell into deep thought. This was not a regular tourist route; he had slipped away while the tour guide wasn't looking. It wasn't peak tourist season, so no one bothered him.
He didn't know how much time had passed when Yu Tong, who had been sitting, suddenly stood up, holding the urn and murmuring, "Mom, your son has finally brought you to Huangshan. Isn't the scenery beautiful here? I have no more attachments in this world. I'll stay here with you forever, okay?"
He then looked deeply into the urn in his hands and leaped.
Perhaps a second passed, perhaps an eternity. As he plummeted, Yu Tong felt a jolt, and then knew nothing more. When he awoke, Yu Tong looked around, a strange feeling creeping into his heart. Could there really be an underworld? Was this the underworld? The scenery seemed quite nice. Was his mother here too? Thinking this, Yu Tong quickly jumped up and ran along the obvious path. He had heard that those who came to the underworld would be arranged for reincarnation, so he wanted to catch up with his mother as soon as possible and prevent her from being reborn. He wanted mother and son to be together forever. Even if they had to be reincarnated, they wanted to be together, reborn into the same family, as siblings.
The path seemed endless, but Yu Tong was somewhat reassured that there were no forks in the road. He believed that if he kept running, he would eventually catch up with his mother.
He ran for about a day, and Yu Tong, who didn't usually exercise much, didn't feel tired. It seemed that becoming a ghost had changed his physique. Finally, Yu Tong noticed something unusual. Not far ahead, by the roadside, was a small pavilion, where an elderly man with a full head of white hair sat with his back to him.
Yu Tong hurried over and asked, "Grandpa, how long have you been sitting here?"
The old man didn't move, but sighed softly and said, "I can't remember, probably over a hundred years!"
His voice was surprisingly young.
"Then, grandpa, have you seen a woman in her fifties pass by here, about four days ago?"
Yu Tong asked anxiously.
The old man said, "No, you are the only person with destiny to come here in the past hundred years, and the first outsider to enter this place since ancient times."
"The first?"
Yu Tong wanted to chase after him, but stopped when he heard the old man's words. "Really? Many people die every day, how could I be the first one to come?"
The old man sighed, "Do you think every dead person has the opportunity to enter my place?"
Yu Tong asked in surprise, "Isn't this the underworld? Don't people come here when they die?"
The old man chuckled, "This is not the underworld, but my private space. Without my permission, even my servants cannot enter. I didn't expect you to accidentally stumble in. Since we meet, it is fate. Young friend, would you be interested in sitting down and chatting?" Yu
Tong said anxiously, "How did I end up in your space? Quickly send me out, I need to go to the underworld to find my mother!"
The old man said, "Even if I send you out, you can't go to the underworld, because you are not dead. And even if you try to die again, it won't work. After a person dies, their soul will be immediately sent to its proper place in the underworld. You won't find anyone there!"
Yu Tong was stunned by his words.
The old man continued, "Young friend, why don't you sit down and chat with me for a while? I haven't spoken for over a hundred years. Just treat me as someone to confide in. Tell me about your troubles, and maybe I can help you find a way to remedy the situation."
Yu Tong sighed, not taking the old man's words seriously. However, his hope of seeing his mother had already been dashed, and seeing how pitiful the old man was, having not spoken for over a hundred years, he sat down behind him and said, "Alright!"
Seeing that he had agreed, the old man slowly turned around. Yu Tong was taken aback when he saw his appearance. He had thought the old man was an old man, but now he realized that this person seemed to be only about his own age. He had a handsome face, with an indescribable heroic air. Yu Tong was considered a handsome man, but compared to this person, he could only be considered an ugly man.
Yu Tong smiled sheepishly, "I'm sorry, I didn't expect you to be so young. I've been calling you 'old man' all this time. May I ask your name, brother?"
The man smiled slightly and said, "Calling me 'old man' is not an exaggeration at all. I'm over a hundred million years old. As for my name, just call me Huanxi."
As he spoke, he stretched, and his previously slightly hunched figure instantly became upright. "I haven't moved for over a hundred years. This stretching feels really good. By the way, young friend, what's your name?"
Yu Tong was stunned. Was Huanxi just bragging? Over a hundred million years old? How many years has it been since humans evolved from apes?
Seeing that Yu Tong seemed unconvinced, Huanxi laughed and said, "Young friend, don't overthink it. You'll believe me after we chat for a while. First, tell me your name, and why you're so determined to die. Many people want to live but don't live long enough."
Yu Tong put aside his doubts and said to Huanxi, "Alright, my name is Yu Tong. As for why I want to die, well, I'll have to tell you about my failed life."
Then, Yu Tong recounted his life story to Huanxi.
Huanxi nodded after listening: "It seems that you, young friend, also feel a sense of despair due to the death of a loved one, which is somewhat similar to my situation. Would you like to hear my story?"
Yu Tong nodded and said, "Please speak!"
Huanxi sighed deeply, lowered her head slightly, seemingly lost in thought, and a soft voice rang out: "I and some others have existed in this world since the birth of this universe. Each of us possesses unparalleled power, and together we changed this world, living in peace. But later, disputes gradually arose, and several small alliances formed, leading to constant friction. This friction grew increasingly severe, and finally, ten thousand years ago, they..." A great war broke out, a war that utterly destroyed the human society that had been painstakingly built, returning the world to its primitive state. I, however, had no desire to participate in their conflict; I only wished for a peaceful life with my beloved wives and followers. So, I took my wives and servants and left the battlefield. Unexpectedly, as the fighting intensified, they felt their strength waning and, fearing I would become too powerful, they brought the battle to my home. To protect my wives, I was forced to fight them. In the end, I was severely wounded and had to enter a deep slumber. Later, my divine servant told me that after my slumber, none of those powerful beings emerged victorious; most were reduced to ashes. A few survived, retaining only a wisp of their souls; they were later hailed as saints. During my hundred thousand years of slumber, my beloved wives, in an effort to awaken me, sacrificed their entire divine power, one by one vanishing into nothingness.”
At this point, this powerful being, who could be considered a saint, was already in tears: “But how could they know that without them, what meaning would my awakening have? So, for over a hundred years since I awoke, I’ve been wondering if I should disappear from this world like them.” Yu Tong
was somewhat shocked, somewhat moved, and somewhat puzzled, and couldn’t help but ask: “But, according to legend, saints are devoid of emotion? How can you possess such profound feelings?” "Rich emotions? And why don't you seek revenge on those saints? Aren't you in this state because of them?"
Huanxi sneered, "Of course those saints you're talking about have no emotions. They were just one of the countless avatars of those powerful beings back then. How could avatars have emotions? But everything in the world, everything independent, has its own emotions, even a blade of grass and a tree. As for revenge, there's no need. After all, they guided the re-origin of humanity and have done some merit for this world. Moreover, their true forms have already vanished into thin air. Why should I lower myself to bother with these emotionless avatars whose strength is even a fraction of their true forms?"
