Chapter 45 of "A Wife's Heart is Like a Knife"

Author: Yao
, November 18, 2017. Original:
Yes.
First Publication: No.
A woman with such high education, why would she act that way towards such a sleazy man?
I can't understand it.
The next morning, the weather was quite nice.
My mother had made an appointment to go shopping early. Lin Qian, since she didn't have to work that morning,
went with them.
At the company,
Xiao Gong and the others were still discussing the picture of the goddess on the street yesterday.
As I passed their desks, I could see that their computer desktops had been changed to
a sexy image of that woman. They were still arguing about which photo was better.
I just quickly left.
When I'm upset, I prefer to focus on work.
Work is actually quite busy, because I'm a new manager, and many documents were only delivered to me this morning.
Everything is starting anew.
Time flew by, and it was noon, around 11:00 AM. Xiao Gong came to the office, bringing
a recruitment report for a subsidiary company called Tianya Construction.
After putting the report on the table, he didn't leave. Instead, he said to me mysteriously, "After work this afternoon,
a few of us from the department are going out together. Want to come?"
I looked up at him curiously. "What for?"
he asked. "We're going to that street near the Mayflower Hotel. We want to see if we can run into that goddess again
. You didn't see her last time, want to come?"
His eyes were filled with excitement.
I, however, was a little annoyed. I put the reports on my desk aside and said, "Go by yourself."
Work kept me busy, and time flew by.
The third day after that was a cloudy day. The weather forecast predicted rain, and the sky had been overcast since morning, but
it hadn't rained.
I was busy reviewing various reports. In these three days since taking office, because I was completely focused, I
had actually finished most of my work.
Because of the speed, when I went to the boss's office in the afternoon, he specifically said to me, "Sometimes
you should remember to rest. Health is the foundation of everything."
I smiled wryly.
The saying "unlucky in love, lucky in career" seems to have some truth to it. When someone treats work as an escape
, everything seems to be handled faster than usual.
This even made me worry that once everything was finished, I'd have nothing to do.
At 3 PM, I was reviewing reports as usual. Suddenly, I saw a
name on one of the reports that truly surprised me!
It was a report from a subsidiary, a recruitment form from a newly acquired company called Jingrui Construction
.
For reports like this, I usually just go through the motions, checking the headcount. Whether or not these
people are actually hired is not my concern.
But one name on this report shocked me
—Yang Taozi!
For a moment, I thought I must be seeing things, but after looking at it several times, I realized I
wasn't mistaken at all.
Then I found his application information on the company intranet and looked at it again.
I didn't even glance at the sleazy-looking photo on the resume before immediately closing it.
It really was him.
The layers of dark clouds outside the window gave me an eerie feeling.
After thinking for a while, I called Jingrui Construction.
The person who answered quickly found the person in charge after recognizing me.
Their recruitment was for a government project in Fengjiang Province that was about to begin.
I said directly, "Everything on this report is correct. But the last form is missing a
date."
That report consisted of several different forms.
Yang Taozi's name was on the last small form, listed with eight other people.
The forms above all had detailed instructions on the application date and follow-up appointment date, but the last one was missing
.
The person on the other end immediately said, "The last form has a few applicants who don't quite meet the requirements. The date
is the same as the previous ones, all from the same day."
He probably thought I was being too meticulous, being a new manager. That small form clearly
stated "Under observation," meaning someone unlikely to be hired. Most people, seeing those two words and
the same date, wouldn't pay attention. I seemed a bit too nitpicky.
But it was, after all, their oversight. So he added, "There's been a labor shortage for the past two months.
The construction schedule over there is also tight, so there's a manpower gap. These few people aren't quite qualified; we'll see
if we can hire them."
His meaning was clear. He'd probably hire these people to fill the gaps first. Later, when new people are hired,
they'd decide whether to fire them…
I rested my hands on the hardwood table, also thinking about this. I was a little confused about what was going
on.
This project was to be located outside the province, a huge distance away.
What did Yang Taozi mean by suddenly going there?
I looked suspiciously at the form on the computer; the job she applied for was "general laborer," the low-paying kind.
Suddenly going so far away, with a long construction period and little pay, was clearly abnormal.
Perhaps I'd been silent for too long. The supervisor looked a little embarrassed. Just then, someone handed him
a form; there was a rustling sound.
Then, with a smile, he explained, "You weren't there, so you wouldn't know what these people are like. The first
one is Zhang Daikui; he showed his health certificate. But, I have a feeling he's a bit unhealthy; I suspect
his certificate is fake..."
I remained silent.
He went on to describe the problems with each of them, finally mentioning Yang Taozi, "This person... is..."
"Short. Less than 1.5 meters tall. Almost a dwarf. And too skinny. I only put him on the form temporarily.
This guy is also a big braggart. He said his girlfriend forced him to leave, which is why he's looking for a job."
His words annoyed me.
The manager continued, "His words made us all laugh. You didn't see him,
not only is he short, but he's almost bald. His age is listed as 41, but he looks over 60."
I specifically asked, "His girlfriend...?"
The manager replied, "Who knows? That guy talks nonsense. I think he might even be faking his age."
My eyes fell on the bottom corner of the report. Judging from the time, this form was registered six days ago.
That is, he applied for the job three days before the company's annual meeting.
Could it really be that Lin Qian made him leave?
The manager was still on the other end of the phone. Perhaps I hadn't spoken for too long. He coughed.
I said, "It's nothing. I was just checking."
"Okay. We're under a tight deadline this time. We're also a bit short-handed." He stopped there.
This guy was a seasoned veteran; he made his meaning clear—he wanted me to release it as soon as possible. But he didn't say it directly
to avoid taking responsibility later.
After hanging up, I put the report form on the table.
The black ink on the form was outlined with a row of black question marks.
I couldn't understand why Yang Taozi left…
What was she doing?
Provocation?
Theoretically, that didn't make sense either. This company was newly merged, and I was newly promoted.
It was unlikely that someone knew beforehand that I would be reviewing…
Jingrui Company's project was located in a very remote area.
Theoretically, although this guy's income wasn't high, he still had his own livelihood. Leaving a familiar environment
to take a low-paying job, wasn't that strange?
I sat by the window for a long time. This matter didn't make sense. The afternoon passed by like that.
On my way home from work, I bumped into Xiao Gong in another department.
When he greeted me, he suddenly said, "You seem to be in a good mood. Want to come with us tonight to
wait for the goddess?"
I was a little surprised by his words.
In a good mood?
But I didn't realize it; I did look quite happy.
Xiao Gong is the kind of guy who gets excited as soon as he gets off work. He was telling me about how he went to wait for that goddess yesterday but didn't get to see her
, and then asked me if I wanted to go.
I casually said, "Don't waste your time."
He was a little unconvinced, "Fine, don't go then. What do you mean by wasting your time? Sincerity can move mountains!"
I waved my hand dismissively and left.
I knew they wouldn't run into Lin Qian.
I knew Lin Qian's usual off-work time very well. And the route was wrong. She must have taken
a route she didn't usually take that day to be encountered by Xiao Gong and the others.
Otherwise, they could have waited there forever and never seen her...
I walked on the white-tiled passageway leading to the company's front door. There was a faint pre-rain moisture in the air.
I was focused on something else—I was indeed in a good mood.
It seemed that realizing Yang Taozi was leaving made me feel much more relaxed.
The feeling was like suddenly returning to shore from the depths of the sea.
I thought somewhat unhappily: Did this mean Yang Taozi was putting so much pressure on me?
Frankly, I don't really respect people like Yang Taozi.
It's not just because of his appearance, but also because of his weak character.
I can't pinpoint when I started feeling pressured around him. But this feeling is unpleasant
.
Lin Qian went to the night market with her mother today.
After returning home, I ate a quick meal and spent the evening online in my study until 8:30. I'd read everything I usually read online
.
I casually posted on my favorite forum, Tianya, turning today's events into a short story
.
Of course, I changed the protagonist to Yang Taozi. The question was, "What does this mean?
" "A woman sends a man to work thousands of miles away. Before leaving, she sleeps with him.
What does this mean?"
I didn't expect any replies. A few minutes later, I received a notification. I checked it, and the reply was:
"You're not that guy, are you?"
I ignored it. Then another reply came soon after.
"You're going on a long trip, and you're not married, so this means you're breaking up, right? Or what?"
"You're going to be cheated on; she has someone else in her heart."
I added a reply, "Then why did you sleep with her before she left?"
"Breakup sex, I guess."
After that, I didn't look at
the post anymore. By 10 PM, the post had over a page of replies. Aside from some low-quality posts,
most were along these lines:
"Breakup sex."
"No normal woman likes being separated from the man she loves. She definitely doesn't like you anymore. Why did you have to
go to another city separately? Even if you're working, you should be together."
"You're going to be cheated on. Don't dwell on it. Find someone better outside. Don't overthink it."
There were also some shameless ones: "Hey, can you post her *****?"
I basically didn't get any leads that night.
The next morning, on my way to work, I was still thinking about it.
The answers were all over the place, and I couldn't come to any accurate conclusions. But there's one thing I still
need to do.
I'll ignore that recruitment form. Yang Taozi will most likely be hired.
There's a labor shortage right now. But once this period is over and the flow of people picks up
, they'll definitely weed him out once they find someone else (probably no one is worse off than him).
He'll be back soon.
That morning, I did him a small favor.
In the final review, I recommended hiring him and another stranger on the same form as foremen.
In this kind of situation, the subordinates will still give him face. The foreman isn't an important position. He's just
a small leader among the lowest-level workers who move bricks, mix mortar, and tie steel bars. It doesn't matter if he's there or not; it's just
a matter of a word.
(Adding another person is just to avoid drawing attention to my unusual behavior.)
But for me, this matter is very important.
I sat in the black swivel chair in the office, my feet propped up on the desk, my body leaning back.
After all, I had to do something for the person I disliked most, and I was very unhappy. But I had my
reasons for doing this.
Being a foreman would make it harder for Yang Taozi to be fired. Generally speaking, unless there's a major accident,
theoretically, he wouldn't be fired easily.
Moreover, if he worked this position for two years, he would have a chance to be promoted to a permanent position. For
someone like Yang Taozi, this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
He wasn't young anymore. If he became a permanent employee, not only would his salary be high, but he would also have his social insurance and housing fund contributions made up. For
people of his age, this was a dream come true. He would probably work himself to the bone.
Of course, I'm not doing this for him personal gain, but simply to keep him on this line.
Jingrui Company's next project is already under review. I have the information.
Several of those projects are in northern Gansu, not just separated from us by two or three provinces
, but by the ends of the earth.
As long as he's on this line, his whereabouts and movements, including where he's transferred, will be under my control.
I'll make him travel all over the country. As for his official promotion, I won't let it happen. That's just
a carrot dangling in front of him, something he can never reach.
