My experience with being sexually harassed

For various reasons, I couldn't upgrade to a hard sleeper. I sat in a hard seat. From Lishui to Jiaozhou, it took 27 hours. I was groped. Because of an exam the day before, I hadn't slept the night before. Then, I had a lot of things to do and was very tired. I boarded the train at 2:16 AM. Since there were soldiers in carriage 16, the conductor told me to find an empty seat in carriage 15. The incident probably occurred when there were no more than 25-30 people in that carriage. I found a three-seater row to sleep in, with my head facing the aisle. I usually try to be as simple as possible when I go out, so I don't wear makeup and my clothes are as neat and ordinary as possible. This time, because of staying up late, the travel, and my poor health, I developed hives, which was very itchy and uncomfortable to wear long pants. In addition, it was hot in the summer, so I chose loose-fitting athletic shorts. I fell asleep with my head facing the aisle, using my bag as a cushion. I'm very grateful for the habit I've developed: at home, I wake up at the slightest abnormal noise. To others, I appeared to be asleep. My row of seats was empty until a middle-aged man appeared opposite me. Because I was extremely sleepy and struggling to keep my eyes open, I noticed him quickly and quietly move to his seat from somewhere. I didn't pay much attention, assuming it was just someone trying to grab a seat or something similar; I only vaguely remembered this. When I woke up again and looked around, I found the middle-aged man was already lying down asleep, and my guard lowered somewhat. There were a few other people in the two rows of seats in my row, but I didn't observe them closely—I was too sleepy—and went back to sleep. The third time I squinted, I saw the man opposite me sitting up and leaning on the table, awake, facing me but unaware of my gaze. I woke up for the fourth time. Sitting up, the person opposite me seemed harmless. We had a normal conversation, but then he asked where I got on and off the bus. I usually like a bit of dry humor, so I jokingly said I got on at the starting point and got off at the end. But he went a step further, asking where I got off at the end. I hesitated for a moment, then said, "Oh, Jiaozhou." Then he spoke in a dialect I didn't understand, but I started to feel a little uneasy… I don't know why, but it's a woman's sixth sense… Actually, this was a warning sign that he wanted more information, and he asked directly. Because I was too tired, I didn't think much of it. But I became more cautious, so I turned my back to him and subtly pulled down my shorts. I went back to sleep. Then I felt something like a bug crawling on my thigh. I'm terrified of bugs, especially on my body. I quickly reached out to swat it, touching rough human skin—or rather, the tip of a finger, I think. I was immediately terrified, jumping and rolling to the corridor, instinctively screaming at the top of my lungs. Everyone in the carriage was startled and stunned, just staring at me. But this middle-aged man's reaction was almost as fast as my landing. Less than one or two seconds after I landed—not enough time for anyone to recover from their shock—he had already said something like, "Wow, what's wrong? Having a nightmare?" There was a pause in his sentence; he first projected the idea onto me, still shaken by my instinctive reaction, that it was a nightmare. I almost believed it. When I immediately realized what he meant, I found him disgusting. His actions were like a guilty party accusing someone of having a nightmare, making others think my reaction was a genuine nightmare. And unsuspecting people would really think it was. First, I was dazed; second, I jumped and rolled onto the floor instantly from a sleeping state; third, I didn't just scream, but rather a scream of genuine fright. I have a physical reaction where, when faced with tension or fear, my breathing quickens and my whole body trembles, but I try to overcome this—it's a weakness of mine. However, the train was cold at night with the air conditioning on, and I had just woken up from a dream. I was cold, shaken, and in a bad state. I had no evidence. At that moment, I wasn't looking for trouble. I stood up, grabbed my luggage, and rushed to the train connection area without saying a word. After settling down, I found a train attendant. Just then, the train arrived at a station, so I stepped out of the train and spoke to the attendant outside the door. During this time, I noticed a man who seemed quite energetic pacing back and forth at the train connection area. He continued pacing back and forth, even as I was halfway through my intermittent, low-pitched account, and then prepared to smoke. This behavior made me suspicious; I suspected he might be an accomplice. I told the attendant I'd continue later. When I passed that spot, everyone in my row was gone, including the middle-aged man. Two carriages later, I saw the middle-aged man standing at the carriage connection area talking to another man, who was obscured by the middle-aged man, so I couldn't see him clearly. (This makes me even more convinced he has accomplices, but I have no evidence, it's just speculation.) Since he knew where I was getting off, the information that I was alone or with someone is crucial. But that's the end of the story. Although I'm still on the train, I've already contacted my boyfriend to pick me up at the station. It's worth noting that a man quickly sat down, but I didn't see him with any luggage. After all, it's on a train. Not even a small bag. Thinking about it later, it's very suspicious. Be observant when traveling, and don't go out when you're not feeling well or tired. If someone asks where you're getting on or off, you can give a vague answer: something like "just got on," "about to get off," "starting point," "ending point," or give only a partial answer, or don't answer at all. But at the same time, you should shift the conversation to them, such as asking where they're getting on or off and how they're alone, to understand their situation. Then assess the level of risk and vigilance. Of course, it's possible the other person is lying, so you need to be more discerning.
