Mother and daughter neighbors (37-40)

37.
On the night Fang Min had her car accident, Huang Xiaolei was entertaining some regular customers in a private room when Xiao Dongbei suddenly called her out in a panic.
The two went to a secluded spot, and Xiao Dongbei said, "Something's wrong, boss lady, something's happened."
Huang Xiaolei was startled and asked, "What happened?"
Xiao Dongbei looked around and whispered to her, "That young woman surnamed Fang, Xiao Fei and Da Chuan raped her to death."
"What?" Huang Xiaolei's eyes widened.
In a secluded room, the two male prostitutes, Xiao Fei and Da Chuan, were only wearing underwear and staring blankly at the bed. Lying on the bed was Fang Min, completely naked, her legs spread open, her genitals still glistening with white semen.
Huang Xiaolei asked in a low voice, "What happened?"
Through Da Chuan's stammering narration, Huang Xiaolei learned that Fang Min had been particularly aroused that night, screaming and shouting during her threesome with the two male prostitutes. As soon as Da Chuan ejaculated, Fang Min collapsed, motionless, and stopped breathing.
Hearing Huang Xiaolei's story, Zhao Li and I exchanged a glance, both finding it unbelievable.
Huang Xiaolei continued, "Actually, only I know what happened. I drugged Fang Min beforehand, which caused her to die from excessive excitement while having sex with two male prostitutes."
I asked sharply, "Why did you drug her? What kind of drug?"
Zhao Li quickly squeezed my hand, signaling me to calm down.
Huang Xiaolei looked at me and said, "Shaoyan, do you remember when the doctor pronounced Fang Min dead, she was pregnant?"
How could I forget? I'll never forget this, and it has troubled me for a long time.
“One day, Fang Min told me she was pregnant. I asked her how far along she was. She said she had just gotten pregnant, her period hadn't come, she was sleepy and nauseous, and she had taken a pregnancy test, which was probably positive. But it definitely wasn't yours, it was some gigolo's, and as for who that gigolo was, she didn't know.”
Huang Xiaolei paused for a moment, then continued, “I asked her what she planned to do. She said she wanted the child because she had always wanted to be a mother, and maybe this was a gift from God. She also said that since she and you didn't have any children, she would have the child as yours, and asked me to keep it a secret.”
I clenched my fists tightly. Although a year and a half had passed, and I had long since moved on from that ordeal, I was still filled with grief and indignation when I heard that Fang Min had not only cheated on me but also tried to have another man's child for me to raise.
I didn't understand why she would do such a despicable thing to me after so many years of love.
"You know what? Shao Yan, I was so angry back then. I really felt indignant for you, and I thought that woman was so shameless,"
Huang Xiaolei said angrily. "So that day I told her that I would take her to a nightclub one last time, that it didn't matter since she was newly pregnant. I secretly put an aphrodisiac in her drink, hoping that she would get too excited while having sex with the male prostitute, causing her uterus to contract too strongly and resulting in a miscarriage."
"But I didn't expect that she would actually die from excitement..." Huang Xiaolei looked up at me, "Shao Yan, did Fang Min have any heart problems before she died?"
I thought for a moment and said, "She didn't have any obvious symptoms, but once during a physical examination organized by her school, they found out she had a hidden heart condition, but we didn't pay much attention to it at the time."
“That’s probably the reason,” Huang Xiaolei said. “I was dumbfounded at the time and didn’t know what to do. So I called two prostitutes out and told them not to tell anyone. After they left, Xiao Dongbei came up with a plan for me. He said he had a fellow villager who was a truck driver who owed a lot of money to loan sharks because of gambling. He was being chased by his creditors and was desperate. We could give him some money so that he could pay off his gambling debts and leave some money for his wife and children. Then we could lend him his truck, and so on…”
“I said I was afraid it wouldn’t work. If he wanted to run away, he could just hide from his creditors, right? Why would he have to carry the charge of hit-and-run and hide from the police? Xiao Dongbei said that’s different. The loan sharks will harass his wife and children, but the police won’t do anything to his wife and children.”
“So I did as Xiao Dongbei said. After Xiao Dongbei secretly carried Fang Min’s body to my car, he went to get the car from his fellow villager. I drove to a place I had arranged with Xiao Dongbei, waited a while, and then Xiao Dongbei brought the truck over. That’s how we staged the accident scene and made it look like the driver had fled the scene.”
“So that’s how it was…” I clenched my fists on my knees and stared at Huang Xiaolei, saying, “You killed Fang Min.”
Zhao Li grabbed my arm, looked at Huang Xiaolei, and said anxiously, “Honey, my sister didn’t mean it. She didn’t know Fang Min had a heart condition.”
I comforted Zhao Li and then said to Huang Xiaolei, “You’re not a doctor. How did you know she was already dead? What if she was just in deep shock? Maybe if we had called for emergency treatment, she wouldn’t have died. But you… if that’s the case, wouldn’t you be the murderer?”
Huang Xiaolei said tearfully, “Yes, what you’re saying is possible, but I panicked at the time and could only listen to Xiao Dongbei. Besides, didn’t she deserve to die? She treated you like that…”
“Whether she deserves to die or not isn’t up to you.” I took a breath. “Even if she’s promiscuous, she doesn’t deserve to die, does she? She’s still alive.”
I paused for a moment, then said, “But what I’m worried about now is, what will you do if this gets exposed?”
A hint of relief flashed in Huang Xiaolei’s eyes. She said calmly, “It’s already been exposed.”
I couldn’t help but exclaim, “Ah!” Zhao Li also gasped softly. We looked at each other again, then looked at Huang Xiaolei.
She said slowly, “Do you two remember that night before the Spring Festival, the three of us made love together?”
Zhao Li and I looked at each other, and she lowered her head, her pretty face slightly flushed. Huang Xiaolei said, "That very night, Xiao Dongbei told me that the truck driver who fled to another city was demanding money from us again. He said this couldn't go on; it was a persistent problem. He suggested we ask Boss Cui for help to get rid of the guy and eliminate the threat. Anyway, Boss Cui knew about it."
I asked, "Who is Boss Cui? How did he know about this?"
"Boss Cui started in the underworld; he's very powerful. I don't know how he found out. Maybe it leaked out? He used this and the secret of Shanshan's background to blackmail me. And the night before—oh, the night you first came to the nightclub to see me…"
Huang Xiaolei glanced at Zhao Li and continued, "He forced me and Lili to film a group sex video. His purpose was to have my women disguise themselves as respectable women to seduce his business rivals and some officials, and then secretly film the sex."
Zhao Li's face turned even redder, and she murmured, "I'm sorry, husband."
I squeezed her hand and comforted her, "It's okay, it's all in the past. I won't dwell on it."
Then I asked Huang Xiaolei, "And then what happened?"
“I didn’t agree to Xiao Dongbei’s plan. I gave him a million yuan and told him to give it to the driver. But Xiao Dongbei didn’t do as I said. He secretly gave the money to Boss Cui and hired someone to kill someone in my name.”
“Because I was useful to Boss Cui, and he didn’t want me to go to jail, he sent his men to another city to kill the driver. But just a few days ago, the driver’s murder case was solved, and Boss Cui and his men were arrested…” Huang Xiaolei said, her thoughts drifting back to yesterday.
“If Boss Cui just washes his hands of it, neither of us will escape responsibility?” In an empty private room at the nightclub, Xiao Dongbei said to Huang Xiaolei.
Huang Xiaolei frowned and remained silent. Xiao Dongbei said urgently, “Boss lady, don’t hesitate any longer, let’s run away! We can still escape now, otherwise the police might come knocking.”
Huang Xiaolei said, "Why would I run away? I didn't kill anyone."
Xiao Dongbei sneered, "If I insist that you ordered it, can you explain yourself clearly? After all, you and I staged the car accident together."
He stopped sneering and said earnestly, "Boss lady, come with me!"
Huang Xiaolei stared at him blankly for a while and asked, "Where do you plan to take me?"
Xiao Dongbei suddenly became excited, grabbed her hand, and said, "We'll go from Yunnan to Myanmar first, and then to Thailand. I have some buddies there. Sis, I'll take care of you when we get there, you won't have to do anything."
Huang Xiaolei was taken aback and asked, "You... what are you saying?"
"Sis, I like you, I've always liked you."
Under Huang Xiaolei's astonished gaze, Xiao Dongbei revealed his true feelings.
"Ever since you saved me and stayed by my side to take care of me, I've fallen in love with you. I thought back then, it didn't matter if you didn't love me, as long as I silently stayed by your side, helped you, and protected you. I was willing to do anything for you, including committing crimes."
Huang Xiaolei broke free from his hand and shook her head in disbelief, "No, no, how could you do this? You didn't have to do this!"
“But I’ve already done all that, even hired someone to kill for you.” Xiao Dongbei grabbed Huang Xiaolei’s hand again. “Sister, I love you! Come with me! I did all this for you!”
Huang Xiaolei broke free again, turning her back to Xiao Dongbei and saying, “No, I can’t go with you. I have a daughter.”
Xiao Dongbei stared at Huang Xiaolei silently for a while, then suddenly turned her around, hugged her, and kissed her, murmuring, “Sister, I love you. Come with me, please come with me…”
Huang Xiaolei pushed him away forcefully. “What are you doing?”
she said to the stunned Xiao Dongbei. “You’re still young. I’m so much older than you. You don’t need to do this.”
Xiao Dongbei said bitterly, “I know you love that Chen Shaoyan, so you don’t want to come with me, is that right?”
“Enough! Stop talking!” Huang Xiaolei shouted.
"And Zhao Li too, why do you both love him?" Xiao Dongbei was blinded by jealousy. "What's so great about that guy? He makes two such beautiful women like you so devoted to him, even going so far as to have threesomes with him. How can you be so shameless?"
"I told you to stop talking and get out!" Huang Xiaolei shouted angrily, pointing to the door.
Xiao Dongbei wiped his face and nodded, saying, "Huang Xiaolei, is this how you treat me? I've done so much for you, but you never even look at me properly, always treating me like your lackey."
"Shut up! Get out." Huang Xiaolei pointed to the door again.
Xiao Dongbei pointed at Huang Xiaolei viciously and said, "You bitch, you just wait."
He then stormed out of the private room.

38.
After hearing Huang Xiaolei's account, Zhao Li and I both felt the seriousness of the situation and couldn't help but feel deeply worried.
Huang Xiaolei said, "The police might be here soon."
I sat down next to her, took her hand, and said, "Xiaolei, go turn yourself in? I'll go with you."
Zhao Li was completely disoriented, looking at me and then at Huang Xiaolei. Huang Xiaolei didn't speak, only shook her head.
I said, "Things have come to this point, why not take the initiative to explain to the police? The truck driver's murder has nothing to do with you. You only need to bear the consequences of Fang Min's case. Surrendering might reduce your punishment."
Zhao Li also said, "Yes! Sister, why don't you listen to Shao Yan?"
Huang Xiaolei sighed and said to me, "Shao Yan, I'm not afraid of going in. The only thing I'm worried about is Shan Shan."
I put my arm around her shoulder and said, "I know, I know, but Xiaolei, things might not be as bad as you think..."
Huang Xiaolei interrupted me, looking at me and said, "Shao Yan, I need you to promise me that you'll take care of Shan Shan for me. If I go in and don't come out, Shan Shan will be your daughter from now on." What
could I say? I could only nod, "Okay, don't worry."
She then said to Zhao Li, "Lili, Shan Shan is in Shao Yan's and your care from now on. Please."
"Yes, sister..." Zhao Li said with tears in her eyes, choking back sobs.
Huang Xiaolei smiled slightly and said, "Besides Shanshan, you two are the people I love most in this world. Come, let me hug you again..."
As she spoke, she opened her arms, and Zhao Li sat down beside her, crying. Huang Xiaolei hugged Zhao Li and me tightly, one on each side, and we hugged her back. The two women sobbed uncontrollably, and I couldn't help but shed tears as well.
That afternoon, Huang Xiaolei was taken away by the police. The person leading the arrest was Fang Mei.
"Are you Huang Xiaolei?" Fang Mei asked sternly.
"Yes."
Fang Mei showed the arrest warrant. "You are suspected of participating in a murder case. We are arresting you according to law. This is the arrest warrant."
Huang Xiaolei silently extended her hands, and a policewoman came over and handcuffed her. Fang Mei's cold gaze turned to us again. When she saw Zhao Li's slightly protruding belly, she couldn't help but frown. When she looked at me again, her eyes were full of resentment.
"Who are those two?" Fang Mei asked Huang Xiaolei.
Huang Xiaolei said, "My neighbors."
"What were you talking about just now?"
"Nothing, just asking them to help me take care of my child."
Fang Mei then turned to Zhao Li and me: "If needed in the future, please assist with the investigation, understand?"
I didn't speak. Zhao Li timidly said, "Understood."
Fang Mei looked away, "Take her away."
"Sister..." Zhao Li cried out, bursting into tears.
As Huang Xiaolei was being dragged away by the police, she called out to us, "Shaoyan, Lili, take care, I'm entrusting Shanshan to you."
When everything quieted down, Zhao Li sobbed uncontrollably in my arms. I gently patted her to comfort her, my heart churning. Perhaps Huang Xiaolei deserved what she got, but God was too unfair to this poor woman.
I immediately told Hao Dawei the news and asked him to help find a lawyer. The next day, I personally visited several law firms.
At that time, Huang Shanshan was filming out of town. After learning about her mother's situation, she asked the crew for a few days off to rush back.
It was only then that Huang Shanshan learned about her background and how difficult it had been for her mother to raise her over the past nineteen years. She cried uncontrollably in my arms, while Zhao Li patted her and wiped away her tears.
I wanted to take Huang Shanshan to visit Huang Xiaolei, but the police replied that they were in the interrogation stage and refused any visits; only lawyers could see her.
Hao Dawei's connections were indeed extensive; he did have a lawyer friend who specialized in criminal cases. That lawyer met with Huang Xiaolei, and Huang Xiaolei accepted him as her lawyer.
On Hao Dawei's daughter's birthday, he was going to Fang Mei's parents' house to celebrate. So I asked Hao Dawei to inquire with Fang Mei, since she was the one who arrested her.
But Fang Mei didn't give Hao Dawei a friendly look at all. Firstly, Hao Dawei had been unfaithful to her, and secondly, she knew I had ordered it, which made her even angrier. She launched into a tirade against her ex-husband, calling Hao Dawei and her "birds of a feather," saying they were in cahoots
, conspiring together to commit heinous crimes. Even someone as thick-skinned as Hao Dawei was rendered utterly pathetic by her accusations. Only at the end did she admit that she was only responsible for making the arrests and knew nothing about the specifics of the case.
"Dude, you've really messed with this woman. She hates you to the core now, and I hate her too," Hao Dawei told me on the phone.
I said, "Don't blame me! What you did to her before, isn't that enough for her to skin you alive?"
Hao Dawei said disdainfully, "Come on! If it weren't for you, her attitude towards me might be a little better. Now you're her number one enemy."
"I'm not exactly a saint either," I said with a bitter smile, letting out a long sigh. "I never imagined that someone we both considered a sister would become such a bitter enemy."
I figured Fang Mei would probably never forgive me.
Those few days, Huang Shanshan missed her mother and didn't want to stay home alone. Besides, I wasn't comfortable with her staying alone, so I let her stay with me. Zhao Li and I took care of her together.
One night, when I got up to use the bathroom, I saw Huang Shanshan sitting on the sofa with her knees drawn up, lost in thought. I asked her why she wasn't asleep. She said she missed her mother and couldn't sleep.
The little girl started crying as she spoke, saying that if she had known how much her mother loved her and how many sacrifices she had made for her, she wouldn't have always argued with her and made her angry. I comforted her, saying that her mother would be very gratified if she knew what she thought, but she would also worry about her.
She buried her face in my arms and cried, saying that she had known all along that her mother worked as a madam at a nightclub, but she didn't want to say it. I gently stroked her hair and said that her mother did all of this for her.
Zhao Li was also woken up by the crying. When she came out and saw me holding Huang Shanshan, I felt quite embarrassed, afraid that she would misunderstand. Fortunately, Zhao Li didn't mind and even comforted Huang Shanshan with me.
Time marched into 2019. Huang Xiaolei's case had come to an end after the initial trial and was transferred to the court for formal trial. She was also transferred to the detention center to await the court hearing. Meanwhile, Xiao Dongbei was still on the run, and the police were making every effort to apprehend him.
I took Huang Shanshan and Zhao Li to the detention center to visit Huang Xiaolei. In just over twenty days, the once radiant Huang Meigui had lost all her former charm, leaving only a haggard face. The three women were constantly crying, and I too had tears in my eyes.
Huang Xiaolei said she was doing well inside and told us not to worry too much. But looking at her like that, how well could she be?
She told Huang Shanshan to stay with me and Zhao Li, to live well, and to focus on filming. She said that whether or not she became famous, her mother would be proud of her. Then she asked about Zhao Li's baby, telling her to take good care of herself and have a healthy baby, and asked me to take good care of Zhao Li.
I told her that if she needed anything, as long as it didn't violate regulations, she should contact us through the detention center. Finally, Huang Shanshan cried out, "Mom, I love you!" Mother and daughter broke down in tears again, and Zhao Li also sobbed uncontrollably.
On the drive home from the detention center, Zhao Li and Huang Shanshan were still crying.
The next day, Huang Shanshan went back to the film set to film, not returning until before the Spring Festival. Hao Dawei returned to his hometown of Xi'an before the Spring Festival and was expected to return to Haikou on the fourth day of the Lunar New Year.
On New Year's Eve, Zhao Li, Huang Shanshan, and I welcomed the Lunar New Year of the Pig. Despite our worries about Huang Xiaolei, who was imprisoned, the three of us still cooked quite a few dishes and tried to enjoy a happy New Year's Eve dinner. On
the second day of the Lunar New Year, Huang Shanshan and I visited Huang Xiaolei at the detention center again, bringing her a thermos of dumplings. Zhao Li originally wanted to come with us, but considering her increasingly large belly and the unsuitability for travel, we let her stay at home.
In the visiting room of the detention center, Huang Shanshan and I watched Huang Xiaolei finish the dumplings, which was our way of celebrating the New Year for her. Of course, the mother and daughter shed tears quite a bit.
That afternoon, I received a call from Fang Mei's mother, who invited Hao Dawei and me to her home for dinner on the fifth day of the Lunar New Year. It just so happened that Hao Dawei had also returned to Haikou by then.
Previously, Mr. and Mrs. Fang had been quite kind to Hao Dawei and me. Although we were no longer their sons-in-law, they were still their elders with whom they shared a bond of kinship, and I couldn't refuse them, so I agreed.
I called Hao Dawei to ask what he thought about it. Hao Dawei said, "I don't care! I'm going back to see my daughter anyway. The key is you, how will you face Fang Mei?" I said, "I've already promised her, so it's all the same whether I stick my neck out or not. I might
as well go! Fang Mei won't give us a good dressing down in front of the two elders, right?" "Okay, okay, okay..." He immediately distanced himself from me on the phone, "Stop fucking dragging me into this. If Fang Mei's going to scold me, it'll be you, not me. Thanks to you, that girl has long since turned her back on me. You're her lifelong enemy!"
On the afternoon of the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, Hao Dawei and I, each carrying gifts we had bought, went to Fang Mei's parents' house.
The two elderly people warmly welcomed us. Although Hao Dawei had wronged Fang Mei in the past, and I had also hurt Fang Mei's feelings (Fang Mei hadn't told them the real reason for our breakup, only saying we weren't compatible), they still treated us like their own children.
When Hao Ni saw us, she happily called out "Dad!" and "Uncle!" and ran over to greet us affectionately. After
sitting down and exchanging a few pleasantries, Hao Dawei stroked his daughter's face and asked Fang's mother, "Mom, hasn't Fang Mei come back yet?"
"Busy! That's how the police station is, especially on holidays, you know that," Fang's mother laughed.
I silently prayed that she couldn't get away today and wouldn't come back. Hao Dawei then asked, "Is she coming back?"
"Yes!" Fang's mother laughed again, "She's coming with her boyfriend."
Hearing this, I secretly groaned; this was going to be interesting.
"Fang Mei, she..." Hao Dawei hesitated. He had originally asked on my behalf, but suddenly felt it was inappropriate for his ex-husband to ask such a question.
I immediately took the call and asked, "Fang Mei has a boyfriend?"

39.
"Yes! They've been dating for almost half a year. He's a businessman, and I heard his business is quite large. He often deals with the police, and he's known Mei Mei for a long time."
Fang's mother said, glancing at Hao Dawei, "Not long after you two divorced the year before last, he started pursuing Mei Mei. At that time, Mei Mei's father and I didn't even know you two were divorced! Mei Mei didn't agree until last year..."
Fang's mother paused thoughtfully, "Around mid-August, Mei Mei suddenly had a change of heart and started dating him, haha."
She deliberately avoided mentioning my past with Fang Mei. I secretly calculated the time; it was exactly shortly after my breakup with Fang Mei. I thought, the reason she was so eager to start a new relationship was probably because I hurt her so deeply and she was eager to forget me.
Then I suddenly remembered that the night Fang Mei and I made love on the beach was in late September of last year; actually, she was already with that man then. I couldn't help but gasp. What was Fang Mei doing?
"Meimei's boyfriend is younger than Shaoyan, about your age. He divorced his ex-wife a few years ago and has a son who's a few years older than Nier. I heard he's from Jiangsu, the same hometown as Shaoyan. Shaoyan..."
Fang's mother's words interrupted my thoughts. I looked up and said, "Yes, Mom."
Even though Hao Dawei and I are no longer Fang's sons-in-law, we still habitually call them Dad and Mom. We've been doing it for so many years, it's hard to change.
"What are you thinking about, Shaoyan?" Fang's mother asked.
I smiled and said, "Nothing, nothing."
Fang's mother then said to us, "By the way, Dawei, Shaoyan, I didn't know Meimei's boyfriend was coming over. She only told me today. You two... are you alright?"
After all, Hao Dawei was Fang Mei's ex-husband, and I almost married Fang Mei myself, so Fang's mother asked this. Hao Dawei smiled and said, "It's alright, Mom, it's alright..."
Just then, the doorbell rang. Fang's mother smiled and said, "Speak of the devil, and he appears! They're here."
As she spoke, she got up and walked towards the door. Hao Dawei and I exchanged a glance.
"Auntie, Happy New Year!" A middle-aged man's enthusiastic voice rang out as the door opened.
"Oh! Xiao Zhang, come in quickly," Fang's mother said with a smile.
"Auntie, I wish you a Happy New Year."
"Oh! You're welcome to come! Why buy anything? It's a waste of money, haha..."
Fang's mother said with a laugh, leading Fang Mei and a middle-aged man into the living room. Fang Mei's gaze turned cold as soon as she saw me.
The man looked to be around forty years old, tall, over 1.8 meters, well-dressed, and with an extraordinary air; he was clearly a successful person. When he saw us, he put his hands together and greeted us warmly, "Happy New Year, you two."
Hao Dawei and I both stood up to return the greeting. The middle-aged man greeted Mr. Fang again, "Uncle, Happy New Year! I'm here to wish you a Happy New Year."
Mr. Fang smiled and said, "Xiao Zhang, have a seat."
At this moment, Fang Mei, arm in arm with her boyfriend, said, "Zhang Qiang, let me introduce you..."
She introduced Zhang Qiang and Hao Dawei to each other, "This is Ni'er's father, Hao Dawei, and this is Zhang Qiang."
I noticed that Zhang Qiang's eyes seemed to suddenly ignite with fighting spirit, and
he extended his hand to Hao Dawei, saying, "Hello, hello!" Hao Dawei shook hands with him. Fang Mei then introduced me to Zhang Qiang, "This is my brother-in-law."
"Brother-in-law, hello!" Zhang Qiang said, extending his hand to me as well.
"Hello!" I shook hands with him as well, "I just heard the old man say that you're also from Jiangsu?"
I thought that since he was also from Jiangsu, I should at least acknowledge our shared hometown. Unexpectedly, Zhang Qiang seemed not to hear me and said to Mr. Fang, "Uncle, how have you been lately?"
"I'm doing very well," Mr. Fang smiled.
Zhang Qiang patted Fang's father's arm lightly and said with a smile, "Uncle, you must take care of yourself! An expert like you is a national treasure."
Fang's father, an expert receiving a State Council allowance, smiled and waved his hand modestly.
From the moment I entered, I felt that Zhang Qiang, though polite and considerate, was somewhat pretentious, and displayed a sense of superiority in front of me and Hao Dawei.
As night fell, everyone gathered in the dining room for dinner. All the dishes were prepared by Fang's mother; the taste might not be as good as my sister's cooking, but they were quite refined, reflecting the style of a highly educated family.
After several rounds of drinks and dishes, everyone ate and chatted. Fang Mei said, "Hey, do you know? The traffic jams have been terrible these past few days..."
It turns out that with the Spring Festival holiday coming to an end, the sheer number of cars leaving the island has caused massive traffic jams, blocking the roads leading from Haikou City to the three ferry ports—Xiuying Port, Xinhai Port, and Yuehai Railway South Port. Typically, it takes anywhere from five or six hours, or even more than ten or twenty hours, for a car to
go from queuing to boarding. We were all astonished. Hao Dawei said he had also seen it online; how could the congestion be so severe? Fang Mei explained that because so many out-of-town vehicles flooded into the island before the holiday, they are now rushing out again as the holiday draws to a close, far exceeding the capacity of the three ferry terminals, resulting in the backlog. The government has also organized volunteers to distribute food and drinks to queuing vehicles along the route and has set up several portable toilets.
As soon as she finished speaking, I exclaimed, "This is truly an unprecedented, epic traffic jam!"
Fang Mei ignored me, and Zhang Qiang asked, "Hey, Mei Mei, is your branch office involved?"
Fang Mei replied, "Of course they are. They're cooperating with the traffic police to maintain order and prevent accidents."
Fang's mother sighed, "Now, every winter and during the Spring Festival, so many people from all over the country come to Hainan Island for vacation, which is why this is happening. I'm really worried that our little island will be overwhelmed." Fang's father
said, "But we also have to see that so many people coming to spend money also stimulates the economic development of our province! In that sense, it's a good thing."
Hao Dawei sighed, "It's just a pity! The whole province makes money, especially Sanya, which makes a fortune, but Haikou has to bear the consequences of this epic traffic jam."
Zhang Qiang said, "We can't say that. The whole province is a unified whole! We can't just look at the local interests of our city."
"Exactly!" Fang Mei immediately echoed her boyfriend.
Hao Dawei laughed, "Alright, you two are really enlightened."
Fang Mei snorted and said disdainfully, "Definitely more enlightened than someone like you."
"Mei Mei..." Fang's mother stopped her daughter with a look, telling her not to speak so bluntly.
I noticed that from the moment Fang Mei entered the room, she preferred to talk to Hao Dawei rather than me, even though her words to Hao Dawei had been somewhat sarcastic.
Everyone sighed for a while. Somehow, the conversation turned to some negative issues in society.
Zhang Qiang said, "Didn't something happen at Ocean University recently? A graduate student wanted to sever ties with his sister who had supported his studies because she was a prostitute, and he almost got expelled."
Fang's mother said, "Yes, I heard about that too. What happened afterward?"
"It seems the sister went to the school, and they let him stay," Zhang Qiang said. "I also heard that after that, the sister reformed and immediately got married."
"Really?" Fang's mother was slightly surprised.
“Isn’t that right? I wonder what kind of man took her in? I wonder if he even knows about his wife’s past?” Zhang Qiang’s face showed obvious contempt.
“Maybe he already knew?” Fang Mei said, looking at me meaningfully, and smiled, “He’s easygoing and doesn’t care.”
I avoided her gaze and remained silent. Fang Mei raised her glass to me, “Brother-in-law, I’d like to toast you.”
Zhang Qiang laughed, “Meimei, you keep saying those two sentences in a row, people who don’t know better might think I’m the one who took her in!”
He chuckled twice and said to me, “Just kidding, don’t mind me, brother-in-law.”
I smiled and shook my head. Fang Mei still held her glass and looked at me, “Brother-in-law, I’d like to toast you, aren’t you going to drink?”
I had no choice but to raise my glass and clink it against hers, taking a sip. Fang Mei downed her drink in one gulp, then turned the bottom of her glass towards me, saying, "I drank it all, brother-in-law."
Fang's mother tugged at her daughter, "Meimei, you know your brother-in-law's alcohol tolerance; he can't drink much."
"Mom..." Fang Mei glanced at her mother, then looked at me, "Since he already clinked glasses with me, he should finish it."
"You silly girl..." Fang's mother complained.
"It's alright, Mom," I said, picking up my glass and downing it in one gulp.
"Sigh! That man is quite pitiful," Zhang Qiang sighed, seemingly not intending to end the conversation there.
Hao Dawei said in a deep voice, "I don't think so."
"Oh?" Zhang Qiang looked at him.
Hao Dawei continued, “Miss is also a human being, a person with flesh and blood and feelings just like any of us, with the right to love and be loved. And the man who falls in love with her and is with her should also have the right to be respected.”
“But they corrupt social morals, even breed social instability, and cause chaos in countless families, don’t they?” Zhang Qiang looked at Hao Dawei, a smile on his face but a defiant glint in his eyes.
“Existence is its own justification,” Hao Dawei said. “Since society allows them to exist to a certain extent, it means their existence is justified.”
"That's because the forces of justice in society haven't had time, or rather, aren't yet strong enough to completely eradicate these ugly phenomena. But I believe that one day they will be completely eliminated," Zhang Qiang said confidently. "As a great man once said, a benign society will eradicate all evil. I believe that day will come."
After he finished speaking, he seemed quite pleased with his eloquent speech.

40.
"That was Hitler who said that," I said abruptly.
"Really? Wasn't it Churchill?" Zhang Qiang looked at me, not quite believing me.
I said, "It was indeed Hitler who said it. The evil he wanted to eradicate was dissidents and Jews, but he exploited and hijacked the patriotic fervor of the German people. So..."
I inadvertently glanced at Fang Mei and found her staring intently at me. After our eyes met, she immediately looked away, her face darkening instantly. I continued, "Many seemingly righteous words actually harbor malicious intent."
Zhang Qiang was a little embarrassed, but he quickly recovered. "Regardless of who said it, as a man, if you've fallen to this point, it's truly pitiful and pathetic."
Hao Dawei smiled slightly. "I think such a man is quite brave."
"I disagree! Mr. Hao. I can only say you're quite open-minded." Zhang Qiang smiled and shook his head.
He seemed to have suddenly found a way to counter Hao Dawei, and looked up to say, "Then, Mr. Hao, if you were in this situation, what would you choose? Would you take on this burden?"
Hao Dawei smiled calmly. "Perhaps I wouldn't take on this burden. But that's because I don't have the courage. I would maintain the necessary respect for such a choice and the person who made it."
"Oh dear! You three grown men, stop talking about this topic and eat," Fang's mother said, seeing that we were arguing, fearing it would damage our harmony, and tried to stop us.
Mr. Fang chuckled, “Actually, they all made good points, each with their own logic. Young people! It’s normal to have different opinions and debate things. As Confucius said, ‘A gentleman seeks harmony but not uniformity.’ As long as it’s a rational discussion, it’s a good thing.”
He paused, then added, “Xiao Zhang is full of positive energy, which is excellent. I used to think that the quietest minds were the most profound, but now it seems Dawei has made great progress too! He can look at issues rationally and from multiple perspectives.”
Mr. Fang’s words clearly showed his approval of his former son-in-law, rather than siding with his future son-in-law. I thought to myself, “He truly is a learned old intellectual; his understanding of issues is exceptionally profound, and he speaks tactfully, offending no one.
” “Dad, thank you for your praise,” Hao Dawei said to Mr. Fang with a smile.
"Oh dear! Old man, the show's started," Fang's mother suddenly said, then smiled at us, "Sorry, you three young people, Mei Mei's dad and I have to catch up on the show. You guys enjoy your meal and chat."
She then said to Fang Mei, "Mei Mei, you keep them company."
"Alright, Mom and Dad, you go watch the show. We'll eat and chat by ourselves. We're all family here, don't worry about us," Hao Dawei laughed.
After Fang Mei's parents left, Zhang Qiang filled Hao Dawei's glass and then his own, saying, "Dawei, it seems you're a straightforward person. Let's have a good drink."
He was quite resentful that he hadn't won the debate against his girlfriend's ex-husband, so he wanted to get revenge at the dinner table.
"Okay!" Hao Dawei, not to be outdone, drank it all with Zhang Qiang.
"By the way, Mei Mei, do you have any bigger glasses? It's not fun for the three of us men to drink from small glasses. Can we get bigger ones?" Zhang Qiang asked.
"Yes! I'll go get them," Fang Mei said, glancing at me before getting up and heading to the kitchen. That one glance sent a chill down my spine.
Soon, Fang Mei brought over four larger wine glasses. Hao Dawei quickly said, "Let's just leave it at that; he can't hold his liquor."
"That won't do. Everyone's equal at the table," Fang Mei said, pouring the wine while looking at me.
I knew this meal had turned into a trap. My current boyfriend versus my ex-husband, my sister-in-law versus my ex-brother-in-law—but Zhang Qiang had mistaken his opponent; he naturally saw Hao Dawei as his rival, wanting to show off in front of Fang Mei.
"Come on, brother-in-law, I'll toast you," Fang Mei said, handing me a full glass and raising her own.
"Cheers, I'll drink first as a sign of respect," she said, staring at me, then downing her glass.
I had no choice but to drink mine too. Hao Dawei glanced at me, then at Fang Mei.
"Dawei, let's have a drink too," Zhang Qiang challenged Hao Dawei.
Hao Dawei wasn't about to back down, and he also downed a glass with Zhang Qiang. And so, a drinking contest, decided on a whim, began in the absence of the two elders.
Zhang Qiang, a businessman, had a good capacity for alcohol, while Hao Dawei, a habitual drinker, was also quite capable; the two were evenly matched.
Fang Mei, though a woman from a highly educated family, had honed her drinking skills through years in the police force. Only I was a weakling.
Fang Mei poured herself and me another glass, raising her glass and saying, "Brother-in-law, let's have another one."
Hao Dawei reluctantly said, "Forget it, Fang Mei, Shao Yan can't drink much, you should drink less too."
Fang Mei ignored him, downed her drink in one gulp, and then turned the bottom of her glass towards me. Hao Dawei simply picked up my glass, "I'll drink for him."
Fang Mei glared at him and said coldly, "None of your business, get out of here."
"It's alright, I'll do it." I took the glass from Hao Dawei and drank it down in one gulp.
After two glasses, I was already feeling the effects. Then Fang Mei pulled another stunt
. She suggested a game of rock-paper-scissors, two against two, with her and Zhang Qiang against Hao Dawei and me. Zhang Qiang immediately agreed, and Hao Dawei and I had no choice but to accept. After a dozen or so rounds, both sides had their share of wins and losses. Hao Dawei, worried I'd get drunk, insisted on drinking, but I couldn't let him keep fighting two against one, so I also had a few drinks.
Zhang Qiang, feeling sorry for his girlfriend, tried several times to take the glass from Fang Mei, but she refused. Fang Mei pushed Zhang Qiang's hand away while drinking, her beautiful eyes, already seven or eight parts drunk, filled with resentment as she stared at me.
As soon as I left Fang's house and went downstairs, I vomited profusely. Hao Dawei patted my back with one hand and covered my mouth with the other, saying, "Now you know? Never offend a woman. Hey! This woman, she really goes all out!"
Then we supported each other and staggered out of the complex. Because we were going to drink, neither of us had driven.
Hao Dawei, having done the work of one and a half men, was also quite drunk. As he walked
, he said, "Buddy, I'm risking my life to keep you company. These few stabs today, I fucking took them for you." He hiccuped and added, "And you kept calling me 'Meimei' so affectionately, we've never even called each other that."
Meanwhile, at Fang Mei's parents' house, Fang Mei was vomiting profusely over the toilet. Zhang Qiang squatted beside her, patting her back and asking if she was feeling better.
Fang's mother stood outside the bathroom door, complaining, "What's wrong with you two? How did you get so drunk? Being quiet definitely won't work."
Fang Mei vomited for a while, felt better, and washed up with Zhang Qiang before going to bed.
The two planned to get married, and since they were both married before, and Fang's parents weren't old-fashioned, they shared a room.
As soon as they got into bed, Zhang Qiang reached into Fang Mei's nightgown and grabbed her breast. Fang Mei pulled his hand away, complaining, "Ugh! My head hurts."

Zhang Qiang had no choice but to give up. He said to Fang Mei, whose back was to him, "I feel like you don't hate your ex-husband, you hate your ex-brother-in-law." Fang Mei didn't speak, but two lines of tears streamed down her face. After a while, she got up and walked outside. Zhang Qiang asked, "What are you doing?"
"Taking a dump," Fang Mei said without turning her head, and left the bedroom.
In the bathroom, Fang Mei sat on the toilet, tears streaming down her face. She tried her best not to cry out loud so that no one would hear.
Back home, Zhao Li quickly helped me up and asked Hao Dawei anxiously, "How did you two get so drunk?"
Hao Dawei walked to the sofa and plopped down, sighing deeply, "It's a long story!"
Huang Shanshan also came out of the guest room and helped Zhao Li help me to the master bedroom to lie down, taking off my shoes and covering me with a blanket.
After the two of them came out, Zhao Li said to Hao Dawei, "I'll make you both some honey water to sober you up. Brother Dawei, don't leave tonight, sleep at Shanshan's house across the street."
After saying that, she went into the kitchen. Hao Dawei said, "Even if you try to kick me out, I can't leave."
Huang Shanshan sat down on the sofa next to him, picked up a cushion, and asked, "Uncle Hao, didn't you go to the Fang family's for dinner tonight? Why do you look like you came back from a drinking contest?"
"Weren't we drinking contests? Girl..." Hao Dawei said drunkenly, "Don't laugh at me lying drunk on the battlefield, how many have returned from ancient battles!"
Huang Shanshan giggled, "You and Uncle Chen came back, didn't you? You didn't die on the battlefield!"
Hao Dawei looked at her drunkenly, "Girl, we almost didn't make it back. You almost never saw your dear Uncle Chen and Uncle Hao again!"
"Who's so powerful? Who got you two so drunk?" Huang Shanshan asked.
Hao Dawei pointed at the air, "A woman, a vicious woman."
That night, before Hao Dawei even got to Huang Shanshan's house across the street, he collapsed on the sofa and fell asleep. Zhao Li had no choice but to cover him with a towel.
