Graduation trip

In the dead of night, gazing at the women sleeping beside me, I couldn't help but recall that trip that profoundly impacted my life.

I was a high school senior then, of average appearance but physically strong, having won second place in the national junior karate competition. I also possessed an extraordinary talent for computers, having become financially independent through several self-designed graphics. Thanks to the money Bill gave me after discovering a fatal bug in Windows 95, I bought myself a 300-square-meter apartment.

Despite this, I still lived with my parents to fulfill my filial duty. They wanted me to move out after starting university. Even so, because I spent most of my time with my computer, I remained single.
After the college entrance exams, I embarked on this seven-day graduation trip with my buddy Awei, my childhood friend Miho, and her friend Juna—a trip that would have a profound impact on my life. On

the first day,

the bus had already been traveling on mountain roads for about three hours. Outside the train window, it was pitch black; apart from the occasional flashing lights, I could see nothing but my own reflection in the window. I shifted my gaze to the inside of the train. There were few passengers; besides myself, there was an elderly local man and a woman traveling with me. Judging from the women's clothing, they were probably tourists like me.

My seatmate, Ayumi, was reading a book. He always came prepared; I wish I had brought something to pass the time.

"Are you bored?" Ayumi noticed my gaze and looked up. He stuck a bookmark in his book and snapped it shut.

"Ah...ah...so boring! Why is it taking so long?!"

"Don't worry, we'll be there soon," Ayumi reassured me with a smile.

"If you're bored, take a nap! Like those two in the back..." Ayumi pointed behind me.

I turned around and stood up to look behind me. "Huff...huff..." "Huff huff" Juna and Miho seemed to be fast asleep; I envied them.

"How are you?" Ayumi asked as I sat back down.

"They're all fast asleep."

"Takayuki, you should take a nap too. I'll wake you up when we get to our destination."

"If I could sleep, I would have gone to bed already! The bus is shaking so much..." The bus had been swaying back and forth because of the turns.

Even if I wanted to take a nap, I would be shaken awake immediately. It's amazing that Juna and Miho can still sleep under these conditions!

"Ugh... It's so noisy! It's so loud!"

"Takayuki, are you done yet? It's time to get up!" *Smack!* "

Ouch!" Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain in my cheek and opened my eyes. Standing in front of me was Juna.

"W-what's going on?"

"Still sleeping in?! Do you want me to do it again?" Right, this is a bus! How did I fall asleep? This is awful. Juna took advantage of me.

"Hurry up and grab your luggage, we're getting off!" Juna said and got off the bus.

I quickly got up, took my luggage off the rack, put on my coat, and headed towards the exit. As soon as I got off the bus, the doors closed and it sped away.

Even though it was March, snow still piled up on the roadside. Moonlight filtering through the trees cast a bluish-white glow on the snow. I felt a chill and tucked my hands into my coat.

"You're so irresponsible! You've made us all lose face!" Junai said, her face sour.

"Alright! If Ayumi hadn't woken us up, we would have missed our stop. Let's hurry to the guesthouse and rest!"

"That's true! Okay, I forgive you! Let's go!" Thankfully, Miho cheered Junai up.
Although Junai seemed angry, she probably wasn't really angry inside! Junai and Miho walked ahead, while Ayumi and I followed slightly behind.

"Ayumi, why didn't you wake me? Didn't you wake Junai and Miho?"

"I called you so many times, but I couldn't wake you at all!" Ayumi said innocently.
That's true, Ayumi probably did try to wake me, but I was sleeping too soundly. "I might have fallen asleep like I was in a coma."

"What do you mean, 'might'? Everyone knows about your bad habit." I was shocked. So this is how everyone sees me?!

"Look, the people walking in front of us, they were on the same bus as us!" Junai pointed to the shadows ahead. We caught up with them soon after. I looked closely, and sure enough, there were people a few dozen meters ahead of us. Although I couldn't see them clearly, they seemed to be the two girls who had been on the same bus as us.

Awei: "Probably! They got off at the same stop as us!" I had fallen asleep and didn't know how I was feeling. But since Awei said so, it must be true!

"It should be true, I'll go say hello!" Junai walked towards the two girls and said a few words. Not long after, Junai waved to us. We carried our luggage and walked towards Junai.

"Hey, these two are also staying at the same guesthouse as us!" The two girls nodded politely to us, and I hurriedly returned the gesture. "Want to walk together?"

After that, the six of us continued walking together along this stretch of forest road.

The tall girl was named "Kazama Mai," twenty years old, a career woman working in a company in the prefecture. In a word, she was a very beautiful woman; with delicate features, she looked like a foreign actress.
Yet, she didn't give off an arrogant feeling; she seemed very gentle, and with a great figure, she must have many suitors.

The other girl was named "Kawaa Izumi." She looked about two or three years younger than us, hiding behind Mai, only showing her face to greet us. Compared to Mai, she seemed very cute. However, she seemed very shy, always clinging tightly to Mai. The two girls were very good friends, and they would travel together every year during this season. Similar to us, I thought we should get along well with them! We introduced ourselves as we walked. Soon we arrived at our destination, the guesthouse.

"Is anyone home?" Juna opened the entrance door, the bell on the door jingling.

"Welcome!" The man who was keeping accounts behind the counter put down his work and came out.
He seemed to be the guesthouse owner.

"We have a reservation, Ichinose and..." Juna suddenly stopped, looking at Mai.

Mai noticed Juna's reaction and continued, "Kazama."

"Ichinose and Kazama... I understand! Please sign here on the bill."

In the lounge, Juna and Mai filled out forms at the counter, while we sat on the sofa in the lobby waiting.
"Hey! Ramimi, come help me!" The owner opened the door next to the counter and called inside. A girl who looked like a middle school student came out. "Is this okay?" Mai asked the owner after filling out the bill.

"Yes, it's fine! Sorry to keep you waiting! I'm Okakura Tetsuo, the owner of this guesthouse, and this is Ramimi, who helped me."

Ramimi bowed and greeted us, and we nodded quickly.

"Please take care of me during my short stay! Ramimi, take these two older brothers to room number three, and the other guests, please follow me." "

Okay."

Ramimi responded loudly at Okakura's instruction. She took the key from the counter and walked over in her slippers. Okakura then led Kazama and the others, along with Juna and Miho, upstairs. Only Ayumi, Ramimi, and I remained in the lobby.

"Let me lead the way. Is this all your luggage?" Ramimi pointed to the luggage at our feet.
"Ah, yes."

"I'll help you with that." With that, Lamemi picked up our luggage.

"Let's go!"

"Can you carry that?" Our luggage was not only bulky but also quite heavy. Could such a petite girl manage to carry it?

"It's okay, it's my job. I can carry this luggage; I was a full-fledged member of the volleyball team in high school!"

"High school?...You're a high school student?"

"Yes! Although I'm short, I'm a genuine high school student. I'm already twenty years old!"
Lamemi said as she climbed the stairs. We were completely astonished! Twenty years old, only three years younger than us?
But she looked like a middle school student...

Our room was on the right-hand side of the stairs.

"Um, here's your room key. Please leave it at the counter when you go out." Awei took the key from Lamemi.

"Please come in." Lamemi took her luggage and went into the room. We followed behind.

"Chirp!" The door to room number three opened, and a pretty woman in a short skirt appeared. Ayumi greeted her. "Good evening! We'll be staying here tonight, nice to meet you!"

"..."

Ayumi's greeting wasn't impolite, and it was perfectly appropriate for this situation... but the woman just glanced at us and went downstairs. I couldn't help but get angry.

"What's wrong with her?! We greeted her politely, and she's so rude!"

"Don't be angry, we were the ones who were rude!"

"What?! What was rude about Ayumi?"

"That's just how Ms. Himuro is. She doesn't speak unless it's necessary, so she doesn't dislike you."

"The luggage is here!" Ramimi appeared behind us at some point and brought us our luggage.
"Don't worry about it! Ah, dinner is ready, please go to the cafeteria in the back. I'll take my leave now!"
Ramimi left the room.

That woman's name is Himuro, and Ramimi said that's how she usually is. Anyway, it's best not to pay too much attention to Himuro.

"Don't just stand there, come in!" Ayumi called to me from inside the room. Right, this is a rare graduation trip, don't waste your energy on something like that. I should put it out of my mind quickly!

"What a great room!" I couldn't help but exclaim when I saw the room. While I was unpacking, I heard someone knocking on our door.

"Coming! Coming!" Ayumi opened the door and saw Miho.

"Dinner's ready!"

"Yeah... I heard about it earlier."

"Good to know! Going to eat, right? Juna kept saying 'I'm hungry'!"
Ayumi looked at me. "Let's go! I'm hungry too, I can't help it!"

"Okay! I'll go call Juna." Miho left the room.

I put my half-packed luggage into the closet. Ayumi had already finished unpacking.
As soon as I stepped out into the hallway, I saw Miho and Juna.

"Ah... our room is next door!" Miho pointed to the "Room Number Three" sign.

"Let's go play at your place later!"

"No, that's a girls' room, you're not allowed in!"

"What's wrong with playing around?! We don't have any bad intentions."

"That's not the point. A girl's heart is very delicate!"

"How long are you going to stand there talking?! Are you planning to starve me to death?" Junai said unhappily.

Miho quickly replied, "Sorry, we didn't mean that!"

"I know, let's go eat quickly!" Junai pulled Miho's hand and went downstairs, and we followed to the cafeteria.

In the cafeteria, the four of us sat around a square table. There was a stove in the corner of the room, and after looking closely, I realized it was a fake. We were sitting at the table by the window.

"Excuse me, please bring the food." After Junai called to the kitchen, the owner showed his face.
"Coming! Bring it over right away!" The owner said and turned back to the kitchen.

In the cafeteria, besides us, there was another group of customers. They were also young people, but a couple who were several years older than us. She was probably several years older than Kazama! Close to thirty, I suppose!
I saw them drinking, and their plates were empty; they'd already eaten. I stared at them, when suddenly the woman turned to look at me, and our eyes met. I didn't know whether to look away, so I kept staring at them. Then, the woman stared back at me.

Suddenly, she smiled: "Did you just arrive today?"

"Yes," I answered nervously.

"Ouch! Juna, what are you doing?" I turned around and saw Miho had turned my head back.
"It wasn't me this time!"

"I can't help it, you're always so violent!"

"Hehe!"

"Don't laugh at me!"

"Is it my fault again?" I felt like I was being tricked.

"If you'd like, we can go to the hot springs together, I heard they're beautiful!"

"..." The owner and Lamimi brought in dinner, while the couple I'd just been staring at left with smiles. As I talked to Juna, I glanced up at Miho.

"Sorry to keep you waiting! This is a special dish from our restaurant... What's wrong?"

"Ah... nothing, nothing!" It's always Ayumi who finishes up; I really envy how composed he always is.
"Ah, then please enjoy your meal!" The owner served the dishes with practiced ease and then went back to the kitchen.
Lamimi was left to clean up the dishes left by the couple. Lamimi told us how to get to the ski resort; it turned out it was only a three-minute drive from the mountain path behind the guesthouse.

"Wow! We're full, we're full! What should we do next..."

"Don't say we're full, we're full! Takayuki, can you help us out? We're the last ones to eat!"
"Yeah! Of course, we should clean up after ourselves!"

"Whew... wow..." The dinner at the guesthouse was even more luxurious than in the advertisements; you could feel the owner's care in every dish.

Miho, Juna, Ayumi, and I chatted about random things until, in the end, we were the only ones left in the restaurant.

"Look at this mess! We need to tidy it up so we don't cause trouble for the boss." Encouraged by Junai's cheerful comment, I piled the tableware in front of me into a stack.

"It's okay, just leave it there." Lamemi peeked out from the kitchen.

"It's alright! We've been up so late, let us help out a little!"

"Okay!" Lamemi looked at us customers with a slightly guilty expression.

"Hey! These... is this okay?"

"Y-yes, just leave them there."

I took my tableware to the counter, where a mountain of bowls and plates was piled up. "Are you going to wash all of these?"

"Yes! Something seems to have happened to the boss's friend, so the boss went to see him. But he'll be back soon." Lamemi chuckled as she carried the heavy dishes. What a diligent girl! Can she manage all this by herself?

"That's hard work."

"It's my job, I'm used to it." "

That's impressive!"

"Not at all!"

"You're working too hard by yourself! Let me help you!"

"Thank you! It's okay, I can manage by myself." Lamemi hurriedly refused my offer.

"Don't mention it! Two people are definitely faster than one... I have to help you, no matter what."
I stacked the casseroles on the counter and carried them into the kitchen.

"Is it alright?... Your friends have all gone upstairs..."

"Hmm... They're just chatting anyway, it's fine!"

"Thank you." Lamemi bowed slightly in thanks.

"Come on, let's get started!" I never usually wash dishes, but seeing Lamemi, I couldn't help but want to help her... I just can't resist cute girls. Lamemi worked diligently, occasionally looking up and smiling at me.

"Are you really okay?... I'm so sorry to have you doing this for me."

"Yeah, it's fine!"

"Miho and Juna, aren't they waiting for you?"

"Those two? No way! It might be a bit boring if only Yui is left to chat with them, but I can't just leave you like this!" Lamemi blushed as she wiped the dishes.
"Lamemi, have you been working here for a long time?"

"I've been working here since last year. My dad and the owner are friends, and I started working here during the second half of last winter break."

"You're so hardworking, the owner must really like you."

"Not really! Working here means I can ski and get free cable car tickets, it's a win-win situation!" "

I see! That's impressive, most high school girls just ask their parents for money."

"No way!... We're not a rich family." Lamemi's face grew redder and redder, and she started to stammer.

"Lamemi got all this through her own hard work, that's really impressive!"

"Ah..."

"There are a lot of girls in my school who are all talk and no action."
"Huh?!"

"Is it the same at your school?"

"Hmm... not really! We're all friends, we should do what we're supposed to do!"

"Sorry, this is a bit of an odd topic... You said you're on the volleyball team... Do you like volleyball?"
"Yes! Even though I'm short, my friends say I'm not suited for volleyball! But I still love it... so I had to work harder, and it took me three years to become a full-fledged player!"
"Wow, I didn't realize you were so petite and cute. I thought you'd like housekeeping or gardening."

"No way! I don't like those things... Actually, you can't do anything without hard work!"
Lamemi's expression changed with her big, bright eyes, which seemed to express "hope for tomorrow." I think I'm falling for Lamemi.

"Hmm... is it almost done?"

"Almost done! Thank you! You've really helped me a lot. I'll treat you to some good tea later to thank you."
"Don't mention thank you!"

"But..."

"Hmm... how about this, let's go skiing together tomorrow!"

"Hmm! Maybe that's for the best!"

"Ha... ha... ha!... Yes, that's for the best." Seeing Lamemi pull up her apron to cover her blushing face, I laughed.

"Can I answer you a little later? I need to ask the boss about tomorrow's schedule."

"Ah... ah... just tell me tomorrow morning." Lamemi nodded gently.
I'll wait for your answer! I smiled at Lamemi, who was hiding behind a cat apron with half her face showing, and turned to leave the cafeteria. Just as I was about to go upstairs, a car pulled up in front of the guesthouse. The owner must have come back!
Thanks to his absence, I was able to chat leisurely with Lamemi; I felt so lucky.

"Hey! What should we do next?"

"Should we all play together? Or should we just go back to our rooms?"

"It's too early for bedtime. What should we do?"

"Ayumi, what do you think?"

"Let's all play a game!"

"I brought playing cards!"

"Then let's play cards! You agree, right, Ayumi?"

"Yeah, no problem! But where should we play?"

"Let's play in our room!"

"Okay!"

"Then, I'll go get the playing cards now." Miho went into her room.

"Let's go back to our room and wait!"

"Yeah, the hallway is too cold."

Juna and the others went back to their rooms. A little while later, just as we were about to enter the room and reached for the doorknob, we heard a loud "thump..."

"Oh no...! Come quick!"

"What happened? Let me see!"

I tried knocking on the door. "What's wrong? What happened?"

"Something terrible has happened! Ugh... that idiot Miho..."

"I'm sorry, it really wasn't intentional!"

"What happened? Open the door quickly!"

"Okay..." I opened the door.

"What happened? What happened?" The room was a mess. Things were scattered everywhere—cosmetics, clothes, etc. Ah! Ah! That's underwear?

"Miho's suitcase lock was broken, and she just opened it... She's really strong! Everything spilled out after she opened it."

"Junai, I'm so sorry!..." Miho tidied up the scattered things.

"Oh right, did you find the playing cards?"

"Yeah, here they are!"

"Well... let's pack up later! Let's go!"

"Okay!"

We went back to the room and started playing together.

"Hey! Jump over there!"

"W-Why did you do that?"

"Hey...hey...sorry!"

"Stop pretending! You're not embarrassed at all!"

"Oh well...it's just a game!"

"My turn! Sorry, let's turn it around!"

"Huh...?...What happened?!"

"It's my turn!"

"Ayumi, I really trust you!"

"That's two different things! Switch hands!"

"Hey! You..."

"Sigh...well! It's just a game anyway!"

"Yeah."

************

We played the game for about an hour. Although the rules were simple, the difficulty was quite high, so it was really fun.

"What should we do, play again?"

"Hey! I suddenly feel like having a drinking party!"

"A drinking party involves drinking?"

"That's right!" "

We didn't bring any alcohol...how are we going to have a drinking party?"

"Just go buy some!"

"Where can we buy some?"

"Isn't there a shop nearby? They sell it there!"

"Yeah! We should be able to buy it there!" "

That's true! But, Takayuki, what do you think?"

"Me?" A drinking party? That's a good idea! We're going skiing tomorrow.

"Okay! Let's have one!"

"Ah! Are we really having one?"

"Miho, don't you want to have one?"

"It's not that I hate drinking parties! It's just that it's so cold, isn't it too much trouble to go out and buy alcohol?"

"I'll go out and buy it, I already said it!"

"Then I'll wait here!"

"But it's so late, you can't go alone! Let me or Takayuki go with you!"
That's right, I'll go with Juna to buy it, and you and Miho can wait here.

"I'll go out with Juna to buy it."

"Then I'll wait here.

" "Takayuki, thank you." We each went to prepare to go out.

Just as I was coming out of my room, Lamemi called out to me.

"Lammemi?"

"Um... about going skiing earlier, um... the boss said I could go, so can I go skiing with you?" Lamemi asked me hesitantly. "What... is it not okay?" Lamemi looked up at me somewhat uneasily.

"Ah...no, no!...Okay! Tomorrow, let's go skiing together."

"Okay." Lamemi's expression brightened immediately. Hmm...so cute.

"Hmm...I have to clean up breakfast...so, around 8 o'clock, okay?"

"Okay, okay! Let's meet here at 8 o'clock."

"Okay." Lamemi happily pattered downstairs.

Ayumi and Miho came to the entrance to see us off. "Be careful!" "Don't get into any danger!" "
Thank you for your concern. Well then, let's go!"

"Goodbye." We set off from the guesthouse.

The night felt even colder, and even though we were wearing ski jackets, we still felt cold. I felt like it was still quite a distance to walk to the liquor store. "How far is it?"

"I thought it was quite close, but it turned out to be so far!"

"But it's really dark around here!"

"I think it should be around here!...Ah! There! There are lights!" I looked ahead, and there were beautiful lights twinkling on the road. But it still seemed quite far from here.

"It seems quite far!"

"Oh dear! It's good enough that we can even see it! To be honest, I wasn't even sure if this was the right way!"

"N-No way!"

"Ha...ha...I was just kidding!" Junai seemed to be in good spirits. I wondered if she really didn't know the way? We finally arrived at the store.

"Ah! The small shop is over there!" Junai found the small shop, and we went over. It turned out that this store not only sold the alcohol we wanted, but also all kinds of alcohol, from beer.

"Excuse me, I want to buy this." I watched the people coming and going in the store until Junai bought the alcohol.

"Sorry to keep you waiting." When I heard Junai call my voice, I felt my cheeks getting warm.

"What are you doing?"

"It's warm, isn't it! This is to repay Takayuki for coming out to buy things with me on such a cold night!"
Junai handed me the hot coffee that she had pressed against my face.

"What is this?"

"It's my treat! Let's warm up here a little!" Junai sat down on a chair in front of the store.
"Ah! It's so warm!"

"Thank you, Juna!" "

I'm the one who should be thanking you! It's so cold, yet you still came out with me." Juna looked so cute, happily sipping her hot coffee. We drank our coffee without talking. Although we didn't speak, the atmosphere was wonderful. I wished time could just stand still. But we couldn't stay there forever, because Miho and Juna were still waiting for us.

After finishing our coffee, we left the shop.

The way back was downhill, and because of the hot coffee, I felt great. "Let's hurry back!"
"Yeah! If we take too long, it'll be tough getting up to ski tomorrow!"

"Then let's walk faster!" Juna quickened her pace.

"Hey! Don't walk so fast, it's dangerous! This is snow, it's easy to slip and fall!"

"It's okay! My shoes aren't slippery!" Juna walked quite fast. I had no choice but to quicken my pace to catch up.

"Junai, I still think this is dangerous."

"You really worry a lot! I'm very confident in my athletic ability!"

Junai slipped and fell towards me. If I caught her, I could prevent her from getting hurt, but if I didn't do it right, it could hurt her even more.

"See, didn't I tell you?"

"Yeah, sorry."

"I'll be careful not to fall, and I'll walk slowly!"

"That's good! If you get hurt, you won't be able to go skiing tomorrow!" We slowly walked back to the guesthouse.

In the lounge, Mr. and Mrs. Tong seemed to be drinking black tea together. "Oh my! It's so late, are you going out again?"

"Ah! It's Mr. Tong!"

"We're coming back from buying something."

Lixiang: "Is there anywhere to buy things around here?"

"There's a shop not far from here, we bought our things there."

Mr. Tong: "Where do you mean? It's quite far!"

Lixiang: "The roads are dangerous at night, you have to be careful!"

Lixiang: "Hey! If you don't mind, come and have some tea with us!"

"Would you like coffee or black tea?"

"I'd like black tea."

"Then I'll have black tea too, thank you!"

Lixiang: "I understand, I'll go ask the people at Okakura Inn to prepare it now!"

Mr. Tong: "What are you going out to buy?"

"Sorry for being so loud, we're going to buy alcohol!"

Mr. Tong: "Hahaha! It really wasn't convenient to be so loud. How old are you?"
"Just turned twenty this year."

Mr. Tong: "That's alright! You'll get used to it!"

"Mr. Tong, did you drink alcohol often before?"

Mr. Tong: "Hmm...so-so!"

Lixiang: "I've already told them!"

"Thank you for your kindness!"

Lixiang: "You're welcome."

We chatted and drank tea there.

Mr. Tong: "Oh dear! It's already so late?"

Lixiang: "Oh dear! It really is! We should go back to our rooms too."

"Then, let's go back too!"

"By the way! Thank you for the invitation."

Mr. Tong: "No, we should be the ones thanking you!"

Lixiang: "It was really fun, thank you!"

"Let's go back to our rooms!" We all went back to our rooms.

"Finally here, much later than I expected!"

"Let's hurry back to our rooms!"

"Wait a minute!"

"What is it?"

Junai walked into the dining room, and then I heard the people from Okakura Inn talking to Junai. After a while, Junai came out with a plate.

"What are you going to do with that?"

"To put ham and cheese in it! Because the shop we went to didn't sell snacks!"

"Did you get these from the people at Okakura Inn?"

"Yes!"

"Junai, you're so thoughtful!"

"Let's hurry back to our rooms!" We went back to our rooms.

"So slow! Do you even know what time it is?"

"Sorry!"

"I'll forgive you for braving the cold wind to buy this!"

"Come on! Let's get started!" We took out the beer we just bought and started our drinking party. After we finished a few bottles of beer, someone knocked on our door.

"Coming!...Who is it?... " "

"Miho, you've had too much to drink! I'll open the door!" Juna seemed to drink regularly, so she didn't seem drunk. Compared to her, Miho was much worse; she was already drunk. She had stopped drinking.
"Miho, don't drink anymore!"

"Hmm...If you don't want me to drink, I won't." Miho said, collapsing onto the bed.
"Takayuki, we have a guest!"

"Is it for me?" I stood up and walked out of the room.

"What is it?...Lammy?"

"Oh, nothing! You guys continue!" We continued drinking.

"Ayumi, what's wrong? Why are you spacing out?"

Ayumi was tilting his head back, drinking juice instead of beer. He must have only drunk one bottle of beer, but his face was already flushed.

"Um... I'm drunk!"

"You're not drunk, you're still awake!" Junai had already drunk four bottles, and she downed the rest of her drink in one gulp, then poured herself a fifth. She drank quickly, but showed no signs of being drunk.
However, Miho, sitting next to Junai, hadn't drunk much, just like Ayumi. I held a beer bottle in one hand and ate some snacks.
