Beautiful woman was sexually assaulted

"Yes, it's me."
"Thank you for submitting your resume. I'm sorry, our company is already fully staffed. Hope to have the opportunity to cooperate again in the future. Goodbye."
"That's right. In the past, even exemplary teachers taught more than sixty children all by themselves."
"Go to the county town and find the Education Bureau." This was what the director said to Li Yu as he was leaving.
"He really looks like the one in the movie, a true village chief." Li Yu thought to himself.
With a "click," the phone was hung up, and the receptionist's sweet voice disappeared on the other end of the line.
"The future, the future, sigh, I don't even know how many 'the future's' I've heard." Li Yu sighed.
Logically speaking, with Li Yu's undergraduate degree, finding a stable job with a stable income shouldn't be too difficult, but his major was too niche, so much so that he still hadn't found a suitable job.
"Damn it, why did I choose archaeology as my major!" Li Yu patted his head and complained.
However, since things had already come to this, complaining was useless, so Li Yu had no choice but to continue his resume-sending journey.
A month ago, two months ago, the resumes he sent out would have been a meter high if stacked up, but very few companies had responded. Even those that did reply only offered words like "thank you, and in the future..."
"It's almost been a year since I graduated. If this keeps up, I'll soon be starving," Li Yu muttered helplessly
to himself,
looking at the two hundred-yuan bills he had left in his wallet. Just as Li Yu was facing the prospect of starvation, a sliver of luck appeared. That day, as usual, Li Yu wandered aimlessly through the streets, hoping to find a job. Around noon, his stomach rumbled, signaling that it was lunchtime.
"I'll just find a small restaurant to fill my stomach," he thought, and began searching for a place nearby.
As he searched, a giant banner on a nearby building caught his attention.
"Dedicate your youth and years to supporting the western part of the motherland," Shan Lingqing wrote, clearly outlining the contact methods for the Western Support Office.
"Support the west," Li Yu muttered to himself.
"With my current qualifications, I'd be one of the few in big cities, but in the west, I'd be among the best. If I could make something of myself there for a year, then come back..." As this thought crossed Li Yu's mind, he forgot about finding a restaurant and rushed to a public phone booth on the street. He pulled out his IC card and dialed the Western Support Office.
"Hello, is this the Western Support Office?"
"Yes, okay, okay..."
After confirming everything, Li Yu happily returned to his rented apartment, grabbed the necessary documents, and quickly set off.
"Please leave your contact information. We will notify you if we hear anything within a week."
These lukewarm words from the recruiter as Li Yu left the Western Support Office dampened his initial enthusiasm considerably.
After two days of waiting and disappointment, Li Yu finally received a call from the Western Support Office on the third day.
"Hello, is this Mr. Li Yu?"
"Please come to the Western Support Office tomorrow afternoon for a second interview. Is there anything I can do for you?"
"No, no. I will be there on time."
This unexpected news surprised Li Yu greatly.
The second interview was similar to the first, asking some common questions such as "When did you graduate?", "Why do you want to go to the West?", and "How many years do you plan to stay there?"
"Please go back and wait for news!"
The second interview ended with the same ambiguous words.
Two more days of anxious waiting and unease passed.
On the third day, Li Yu finally received the call he had been waiting for.
"Is this Mr. Li Yu?"
"Yes, it's me."
"Please come to the Western Support Office again tomorrow. This is the last interview, so please be prepared."
"Okay, okay."
The next day, Li Yu left early. He didn't intend to be late for such an important occasion, but unfortunately, things didn't go as planned. Li Yu encountered three traffic accidents on the way, causing him to arrive two hours later than expected.
Unlike before, this interview was conducted in groups. Just two minutes before Li Yu went in, the director of the Western Support Office was announcing a message to all the interviewees.
"After two rounds of elimination, I believe that those who remain, including you all, are truly outstanding individuals. You will be undertaking a great task: supporting the western regions of our motherland. As everyone knows, there are still many impoverished, remote, and underdeveloped areas in the west, urgently needing educational resources. I express my deepest respect for your willingness to dedicate yourselves to this noble cause."
The platform of the small station was only ten meters long; in fact, the entire station consisted of just this platform and a small shop next to it. (A woman from Mingshan Village was nearby, carrying a basket and selling goods to passengers on the train.) He was carrying mountain produce. And all around, besides this small station, were towering mountains, stretching endlessly across Li Yu's entire field of vision. A station sign stood beside the platform, its large characters reading "Tangu County Station."
He then clapped for himself.
But everyone listening was dumbfounded. They had assumed that the so-called support for the west was because the west lacked high-tech talent, so these rigorously selected people were going there to become scientific and technological backbones; they never expected them to be village teachers.
After speaking, the director began distributing the documents in his hand to everyone.
"Alright, everyone, if you've thought it through, please sign this document. This is to protect your interests and the interests of the supported regions. You might want to take a look."
Just then, Li Yu, who was late, rushed in, sweating profusely.
"I'm sorry, Director, there was a traffic jam on the way today, so I'm late."
"What document is this?" Li Yu asked.
"After you sign it, you can go to the west." Because he still had to distribute it to others, the director didn't explain much and just said this casually.
Li Yu, who was immersed in his western plans, signed his name without much thought.
"Let's go!"
However, after he finished signing, he saw the others who came with him leaving one after another.
"Director, let me think about it some more."
"Director, I suddenly remembered that I have something to do at home, I'll go first."
A few minutes later, only Li Yu was left in the room.
"Director, what, what's going on?" Li Yu looked around at the empty room in confusion.
"Oh, it's nothing. They, they... they already signed before you arrived, so you're the only one left. Have you signed? Let me see our contract."
"Oh, here you go." Li Yu handed over the contract, somewhat confused.
"Haha..." Upon seeing Li Yu's signature, the director burst into laughter.
"Finally, finally someone's been fooled..."
"Director, what did you say?"
"N-nothing, don't worry, young man. Oh, it's Mr. Li Yu, right? Go back and wait for our notification! Haha..." "
Director, your laugh is so sinister..." Li Yu felt a sense of unease.
(Li Yu, in a daze, boarded a train to Chengdu. Of course, he wouldn't get off in Chengdu, but instead got off at a small station along the way called Tangu County (a made-up place name; please don't try to find it while traveling, or I won't be responsible if you disappear into the mountains).
Li Yu looked at the map in his hand and, with great difficulty, found the place name in a corner.
"Although it's in Sichuan Province, it seems very remote and unusual." Looking at the station, which looked just like it did in the movie (ten years ago), Li Yu couldn't help but sigh.
Although he had mentally prepared himself, Li Yu still felt it was really a bit wilderness. But now was not the time for sighs; since he was already here, he should find a place first!
"Let's find the county town first!"
"Excuse me, ma'am, ma'am, how do I get to the county town?" Li Yu asked a village woman selling mountain goods.
"Young man, buy an egg!"
"Sorry, ma'am, I don't want an egg, can you tell me how to get to the county town?"
"Buy an egg!"
"I don't want an egg, can you tell me how to get to the county town?" Li Yu said energetically.
Unexpectedly, the woman turned and walked away without a word.
"What kind of attitude is that? I'm just not interfering with the road, and she actually..."
Helpless, Li Yu had to ask another woman.
"Buy a pound of walnuts!"
"Buy a little rabbit!"
After repeatedly refusing the kind sales pitches of several women, Li Yu finally realized that he wouldn't get any information on how to get to the county town unless he bought something.
"How much are the eggs?" Li Yu finally gave up.
"Two yuan each!"
"Yes, yes."
"What? This is definitely extortion!"
"Fine, don't buy then!" The egg-selling woman still looked impatient.
I...I'm not going...I...I've lived this long and only now do I know what paradise is, a man's paradise. No, I can't say it, I swore an oath, I can't say it, I..."
“Okay, okay, I admit it. I'll just follow that road and you'll get there.” The older woman pointed to an alley next to the train station. “This…this road seems to lead
into the mountains!” Li Yu looked at the road, utterly puzzled.
“Our county town is located in the mountains, what’s so strange about it!” This time, it was the older woman who was puzzled.
"Oh, my god!" Li Yu was at a loss for words.
Perhaps because there were few people around, the side gate from the bus station to the county town was difficult to navigate. Fortunately, after a while, the side gate finally became a paved road, though the road surface was full of potholes due to years of neglect.
Halfway there, Li Yu managed to hitch a ride in a horse-drawn carriage towards the county town.
Before dark, the carriage finally swayed into the county town. Li Yu checked his watch; it was already past five o'clock. Even if he found the Education Bureau now, he figured no one would be there. So, Li Yu found what was probably the only inn in the county town and checked in.
After enduring a night of filth and mosquito bites, Li Yu… The next morning, after hastily inquiring with the hotel owner about the location of the Education Bureau, Li Yu hurriedly left.
When he arrived in Tangu County the previous night, Li Yu hadn't paid much attention to the area; this morning, he finally understood the true meaning of poverty.
There were probably fewer than ten buildings in the entire county that were more than two stories high, and the Education Bureau he was looking for was among them, making it easy to find.
Although it was one of the few "tall" buildings in the county, this five-story building looked like something from the 1980s.
Guided by the doorman, Li Yu arrived at an office, where a man who identified himself as Deputy Director Zhang of the Education Bureau greeted him.
"Is this Mr. Li Yu from Beijing? Ah, welcome, welcome! We received a call a while ago saying you were coming, and we've been eagerly awaiting your arrival!" The deputy director warmly shook Li Yu's hand.
"This is my letter of introduction." Li Yu, uninterested in the handshake, directly took out the letter and handed it to Deputy Director Zhang.
"What kind of job will they give me? Being a regular cadre in the Education Bureau would be too beneath me. At least I should be the director's secretary, preferably a director, and after a year I could be promoted to deputy director or something." As Deputy Director Zhang read the letter, Li Yu began to fantasize about his future.
"Yes, that's how it is. Comrade Li Yu, you have such a great spirit and vision, it's truly admirable. You come from a big city, yet you request to teach in the poorest place. Fine, I'll grant your request. (I've never seen anyone make such a request in my life. [Deputy Director Zhang's coded message]), I'll arrange for you to teach in the poorest, most remote, and most typical village in our county. Haha, don't worry, I've got this job covered!"
"What? ...Only a fool would want to teach in the poorest, most remote, and most typical place!" Li Yu thought to himself.
"This, this, seems to be a misunderstanding, I..."
"What misunderstanding? The letter of introduction says 'please be honest and upright,' you yourself requested to teach in the worst place, it's written in black and white, how could it be wrong? Don't worry, I'll arrange it for you right away, you sit down first, I'll be right back."
"How, how could this be..." Li Yu grabbed the letter of introduction that had been thrown in front of him.
"Ah, it's alright, please sit down first! While you're at it, sign this document."
"...Comrade Li Yu is young and promising, with progressive thinking and resolute will. He insists on going to teach in the poorest, most remote, and impoverished areas, dedicating his youth to the children there. This comrade is truly a role model for us to learn from..."
"Good heavens, this...this is nonsense! When did I request to teach in the worst-condition areas? Don't joke like that, I think I should just go back now." Li Yu tossed aside the letter of introduction and headed out. "Huh, why is the door locked? Let me out! This is a misunderstanding, I want to go home, let me out!" Only then did Li Yu realize that his regret was too late.
About ten minutes later, the sound of a key unlocking the door came from the other side.
"Great, I'm leaving, I'm going home. I'm not going to teach in the worst place. Goodbye, my youth belongs to me, I will never give it to anyone else." Li Yu muttered to himself, picking up his bag and preparing to leave.
"Comrade Li Yu, you can't wait any longer? Great! I've already brought someone to take you there, haven't I? Don't rush!" Deputy Director Zhang pushed and shoved Li Yu back into his chair.
“Xiao Wang, Xiao Zhao, this is Comrade Li Yu from Beijing. You two are responsible for taking him to Dongzi Village. Since Comrade Li Yu is in such a hurry, you should set off now and not delay the journey.”
“Wait, there’s a misunderstanding here, open up, I have something to say…”
“What misunderstanding? Your situation is clearly stated in the letter of introduction, we all understand. Alright, let’s set off now!”
“Wait, open up, don’t do this…”
And so, Li Yu was supported by the two men, leaving the county town and embarking on the mountain road.
“To Dongzi Village.”
“What a strange name!”
“Yes, the people in that village all live in caves, so it’s called that.”
“Living in caves, aren’t they primitive people…”
“We shouldn’t need to walk so fast, my legs are about to break.” Li Yu said, panting heavily. For people who rarely exercise in their daily lives, walking on such mountain roads is undoubtedly an ordeal.
"Hurry up, or we'll get trapped. Then we'll be in deep trouble," Xiao Wang said to Li Yu.
"Trapped? What do you mean?" Li Yu asked, still panting heavily.
"There are a lot of mudslides in these mountains, especially in summer, right now. It rains a lot, and when it rains, the mudslides wash away the mountain roads. If we get trapped, we'll just have to wait to die," Xiao Zhao replied.
"What? How do the people in the village we're going to get out? Don't they clear the mountain roads?"
"Clear the mountain roads! Easier said than done. Where would they get the money? The village we're going to, Dongzi Village, is often cut off from the outside world for half a year after summer because of mudslides." "
Half a year!..." Li Yu felt a chill run down his spine. Even though he was using his wildest imagination, reality repeatedly told him that the truth was far more terrifying than he had imagined.
"We must escape as soon as possible." This thought intensified in Li Yu's mind.
However...
he hadn't expected that their journey would last three days. Three days of mountain travel wouldn't be an easy task even for someone living in the mountains, let alone Li Yu, who had just come from a big city. On the last day, Li Yu was practically carried to Dongzi Village by Xiao Wang and Xiao Zhao.
Already delirious, Li Yu vaguely heard Xiao Wang say to someone, "The person is in your care, be careful, we'll go first..." He
didn't hear the rest and fell asleep.
Perhaps due to the accumulated fatigue of the past three days, Li Yu slept until noon the next day before opening his sleepy eyes.
Upon waking, Li Yu swayed his shoulders, a feeling of dizziness making him give up the idea of sitting up.
"Sigh, it seems I need to exercise more in the future," Li Yu sighed.
"Mr. Li is awake! Mr. Li is awake!" The sudden voice startled Li Yu.
Only then did he realize he was in a house, and that there were other people in it.
Seeing Li Yu awake, the person quickly ran out of the house, seemingly to fetch someone.
After a while, a flurry of footsteps came from outside. Li Yu judged from the sound that there were at least a few people.
"Mr. Li, you're finally awake!" An aged face appeared before Li Yu.
"You are...?"
"I am the village chief of this village, Lao Gao. Hello, Mr. Li."
"Hello."
While shaking hands, Li Yu carefully looked at the village chief, Lao Gao.
He was in his fifties, wearing a worn blue shirt, gray trousers, and a hat that Li Yu had only seen in movies before—the kind popular in rural China in the 1950s and 60s. The village chief's dark face was covered with the marks of time.
"Mr. Li, we've been waiting for you for so long! Oh, right, Mr. Li must be hungry, right? Honey, quickly cook some noodles." The village chief warmly called to Li Yu.
Having slept for so long, Li Yu was indeed hungry and didn't refuse. Soon, a steaming bowl of egg noodles was placed in front of Li Yu, who quickly finished it.
"How about another bowl, Mr. Li?"
"Alright, I'll take you to your house!" the village chief said to Li Yu.
"My house? And... where is this...?"
"Oh, this is my house, your house is right next door," the village chief said.
After hearing this, Li Yu followed the village chief out of the bamboo house.
"Wow..." As soon as he came out, Li Yu was stunned by the scene before him.
"What a huge cave!"
It wasn't until this moment that Li Yu realized he was actually inside a massive cave. He couldn't yet see the entire cave, but the entrance, about fifty meters high, was truly impressive. Only by standing inside such a cave could one truly appreciate the vastness of nature.
With the help of the lights on both sides of the cave, Li Yu saw that it was exceptionally spacious, with buildings on both sides and a path in the middle. Unlike some caves he had visited during his archaeological training, this one had solid ground instead of scattered rocks. It seemed that... The house had been inhabited for quite some time.
Li Yu looked at it; it seemed almost identical to the village chief's house from before. Not only that, but all the houses in the entire cave seemed to be built of bamboo, with essentially the same style, making them difficult to distinguish.
Li Yu followed closely behind into his future residence.
The house wasn't large, roughly forty square meters in total, and there were no partitions—just one large room. A table, a chair, a large chest, and a large bed were all the furniture in the house, and they all appeared to be made of bamboo.
"Has anyone lived here before?" Li Yu looked around and asked the village chief.
"Oh, yes, someone used to live here. It was Mr. Xu's place. Oh, what a pity..."
"Was Mr. Dianfan also a teacher in the village?" Li Yu asked. "
What a beautiful day! My mood has improved a bit, but something strange happened today. The village chief asked if I wanted to stay here permanently and become a villager. Out of politeness, I agreed. His expression was strange then, but I felt something was about to happen."
"Yes." The village chief's expression was somewhat sorrowful.
"What happened? Did he leave?" Li Yu asked casually.
"No, he was swept away by a mudslide on his way to the county town. They never even found his remains. Sigh!" the village chief sighed.
"It was just last month. Mr. Xu was a very good man. He came from a big city and lived in our poor village for ten years, teaching many children. Sigh..."
"Come on, let's go for a walk in the mountains." The village chief led Li Yu towards the nearby mountain.
"Is that so..." Li Yu looked around and felt a little uncomfortable.
“By the way, Mr. Li, come on, let’s go for a walk. I’ll introduce you to our village,” the village chief suggested.
“Oh, okay.” Li Yu put down his backpack and walked out of the house with the village chief.
“Don’t we need to lock the door?” Li Yu looked at the door for a long time but couldn’t find the lock.
“Haha, don’t worry, Mr. Li, nothing is stolen in our village.” The village chief said with a smile.
“That’s right, out of more than sixty children, there are only twenty boys and more than forty girls.”
“Oh.” Li Yu felt a little embarrassed.
After following the village chief out of the cave, the scenery in front of them suddenly opened up.
A round farmland appeared in front of Li Yu. It was surrounded by mountains on all sides, and it seemed to be completely surrounded by mountains. It was summer now, and the various crops in the farmland were growing well, but what was a little strange was that Li Yu saw that most of the people working in the fields were women.
“Mr. Li, this will be your home from now on,” the village chief, Lao Gao, said to Li Yu, pointing to a house.
"Yes, but this is all the farmland in our village!" the village chief said.
"How big is this land?"
"Village chief, you don't mean that our village has no other people besides me now, do you?"
"About five hundred mu!"
"Wow, that's so big! Why do you insist on living in caves? It's so much bigger outside!" Li Yu asked, puzzled.
"What's wrong with the village chief, changing his mind like this?" Li Yu wondered.
"Well, in the past, our village had many elderly people, and the seeds weren't good, so the yield per mu was low. Therefore, our ancestors all moved to caves." the village chief said.
"That was a long time ago, wasn't it?"
"Yes, according to the elders, our ancestors fled here to avoid the Qing army's invasion and built this village." the village chief said.
"The Qing army entered the pass! Li Yu, who is studying archaeology, certainly knows that the Qing army entered the pass in 1644, which means it has been more than 300 years since then."
"No wonder your accents are different from what I heard in the county town, so that's why!" Li Yu, who is studying archaeology, knows that in China, many villages may seem inconspicuous, but they often have incredible histories.
"Is there no arable land nearby?"
"The elders say that when our ancestors first came here, there were many people, and the yield per acre was low, so all the land was planted with grain. Later, people lived in caves. They gradually discovered that living in caves had many advantages—warm in winter and cool in summer, fewer mosquitoes—so we still live in caves today."
"No, this area (a hundred square kilometers) is all mountains. We're just one village, and this is the only arable land we have," the village chief explained.
"Oh, I see!"
Li Yu and the village chief walked along the alley up a nearby hill.
"Look, that's the only road in and out of our village," the village chief said, pointing to an alley at the village entrance.
"Oh, that's the road I came by!" Li Yu thought to himself. He was completely exhausted when he arrived and didn't remember how he got into the village.
Speaking of roads, Li Yu suddenly remembered his plan.
"Such a beautiful place, I'll stay for a few days before leaving, consider it a vacation. Hehe..." Li Yu thought to himself.
“By the way, Village Chief, since I’m here to teach, I need to go to the county town tomorrow to buy some teaching materials. Could you send someone to take me? I’m sure I’ll get lost if I walk on the mountain paths.” Li Yu said to the village chief.
“Oh, that’s difficult!” the village chief said.
“Difficult? What do you mean? Could it be that they’ve seen through my plan?…” Li Yu thought, breaking out in a cold sweat.
“Why is it difficult?” Li Yu asked cautiously.
“Mr. Li, you don’t know, there was a heavy rain last night, and I suspect there might be some mudslides somewhere. So I sent people out to check this morning, and we had news by tonight.” the village chief said.
“Oh, I see!” Li Yu breathed a sigh of relief.
“If there’s a mudslide, can’t we just clear it? Village Chief, didn’t you say that last month, Mr. Dian was swept away by a mudslide, and when I came, the road had already been cleared? Even if there’s a mudslide this time, can’t we just clean it up again?” Li Yu asked.
"That cleanup already used up our village's budget for this year's cleanup, so if we need more funding, we'll have to wait until next spring," the village chief said.
"Ah... the budget's used up. Um, village chief, may I ask how much your village's annual budget is for mudslide cleanup?" Li Yu asked.
"It varies every year, depending on the village's income, but basically it's only about a thousand yuan!"
"What? Only a thousand a year?..." Upon hearing this, Li Yu began to pray that last night's torrential rain hadn't triggered a mudslide.
"Oh, right, Mr. Li, don't worry. Although our village is poor, we grow plenty of grain, and the women weave cloth. We'll have no worries about food and clothing in our village. Even if you can't leave, you can rest assured!" The village chief, seeing Li Yu's expression, assumed he was worried about this.
"No worries about food and clothing!..." Li Yu didn't know what to say.
"Come on, Mr. Li, I'll take you to meet the elders in our village."
"Oh, I see," Li Yu replied, following the village chief down the mountain.
"By the way, village chief, how many people are there in the village now?" Li Yu asked.
"More than two hundred and forty people. You'll be teaching more than sixty children, from first grade in elementary school to the third year of junior high," the village chief said.
"No... really? What kind of work is that?"
"Oh my god..." Li Yu started to groan inwardly again.
"Ah, no need, thank you," Li Yu said with a forced smile.
"Hey, by the way, Village Chief Gao, I noticed earlier that there were more women than men working in the fields. That's strange!" Li Yu asked casually to lighten the mood.
"Well, well... speaking of which, well... I'm sorry..." the village chief stammered, seemingly having something difficult to say.
"What's wrong, village chief? Is there a problem?" Li Yu asked curiously.
"Well, well... our village has always been like this..." The village chief's voice trailed off, until finally it was impossible to hear what he was saying.
Seeing the village chief's embarrassment, Li Yu wanted to change the subject, but couldn't think of anything good to say, so the atmosphere between the two became very awkward.
"Actually, Mr. Li, since you've already come to teach in our village, I won't hide it from you... This job isn't exactly honorable, so I'm hesitant to bring it up. For some reason, our village has always had more girls than boys. Because of this, the men in our village can't hold their heads high in front of people from other villages. Sigh..." The village chief then explained the situation.
"Oh, is that so? So what is the male-to-female ratio in your village?" Li Yu asked.
"Our village currently has over 240 people, over 60 children, 180 adults, and only 60 men," the village chief said.
"No way, the male-to-female ratio is 1:2? That's a huge difference! Is the ratio among the children the same?"
"Yes, it is! Actually, village chief, this kind of work has nothing to do with the men in your village, you don't need to be embarrassed," Li Yu said.
"Ah, hello, I'd like to ask, if I want to register, what documents do I need to bring?"
"It has nothing to do with men, Mr. Li, do you mean it has something to do with the women in our village?" the village chief asked, puzzled.
"No, that's not what I meant. I mean, this situation has nothing to do with people. I've read about this kind of work in the newspaper before, but that was somewhere abroad. The report said that this situation might be related to an imbalance of certain trace elements in the food or water you drink," Li Yu said to the village chief.
"What a huge piece of land!" People in the city rarely see such a large piece of farmland.
"What do you mean? Mr. Li, I'm not well-educated and don't know what you're talking about. But you're from a big city, so whatever you say, goes," the village chief said.
Although the village chief said this, Li Yu could still sense a slight distrust in his tone.
"Never mind that, Mr. Li, I'll take you to meet the elders in our village."
"Hmm..."
"Ah, really?"
The two walked down the mountain one after the other.
Led by the village chief, Li Yu visited the village elders. After the visits, Li Yu gained some understanding of the village's situation. At least he knew that in the village, many things weren't decided by the village chief alone; these elders were like elders in a council, controlling a large portion of the village's power.
After visiting the village's "elders" in turn, the people the village chief had sent out to scout the way returned.
"Come in and take a look," the village chief said, pushing open the door and entering.
"Please, please, no bad news. I don't want to stay here for so long," Li Yu prayed silently.
"It's over, it's over, village chief! This time we're in trouble. The thorny path is completely blocked. There's no way to get around," the messenger returned with the news.
"No...no way, I..." Upon hearing this news, Li Yu almost fainted.
"Alas, Mr. Li, there's nothing we can do. It seems you won't be able to go to the county town!" the village chief said to Li Yu.
"No...it's alright. I feel a little tired. I'll go back and rest first," Li Yu said, heading towards his small hut.
As soon as he entered, Li Yu threw himself onto the large bed.
"Oh God, what am I going to do? There's still half a year until next spring! What am I going to do? What am I going to do? Will I end up like the village chief in six months, with dark skin and a face full of wrinkles? Will I be wearing those clothes, driving a donkey cart to the county town to sell potatoes? Will I..." A series of terrifying premonitions drove Li Yu almost crazy.
"Sleep, sleep, it's just a nightmare, yes, a nightmare. Tomorrow will definitely be better, tomorrow, tomorrow..."
Li Yu tossed and turned in bed, unable to fall asleep.
"This isn't the end of the world, it's just six months, it'll be over quickly. Find something to do, forget about time, it'll be over soon, soon..." Li Yu quickly learned to comfort himself.
"What am I doing, what am I doing..." Li Yu began frantically rummaging through his house, but the furnishings were too few; there were only a few items, besides a table, chairs, and a bed, there was only that large chest.
Li Yu walked to the chest, a large chest woven from bamboo strips, the kind with many holes, a common type of chest in the south. Li Yu carefully opened the chest, hoping it would be full of novels—martial arts novels, horror novels, detective novels, fantasy novels, erotic novels… anything to read and pass the time, anything would do.
However, reality disappointed Li Yu once again. The chest was neatly filled with many teaching materials, textbooks, student assignments, and diaries.
Li Yu looked helplessly at the contents of the chest.
"Forget it, I'll just be a village teacher for the next six months!" Li Yu sighed.
He picked up a textbook and flipped through it casually.
"Boring." After flipping through the textbook, he looked at the students' homework.
"Boring." He tossed the students' homework aside, then looked at the diary.
The diary was written by Li Yu's predecessor, Teacher Xu. He took out the bottom one, the one Teacher Xu had just arrived in the village on New Year's Eve, and started reading it.
"July 10th, cloudy.
I never thought there would still be such a backward village. I don't know if my choice was right. Village Chief Gao seems like a nice person. I'll stay in the village for now. If I get a chance, I might escape..."
"This Teacher Xu seems to be similar to me!" Li Yu thought.
"Anyway, I quietly ran away after arriving here. Do you think a big man like me can be trapped and die in a mountain village?" Li Yu secretly made up his mind.
"July is rainy.
I'm starting to hate this place. I came to the county town, and until today, I haven't seen the sun for almost a week. It's raining almost all summer here. No wonder the people here eat chili peppers, otherwise they can't stay here and everyone will get arthritis. I have to find a chance to escape quickly."
"Huh, he's already planning to run away on only the second day? How did he manage to stay here for ten years?" Li Yu found it strange.
The entries in his diary for the next week were almost identical, all about how to leave the village as quickly as possible. However, just a week after Mr. Xu arrived in the village, everything... "July 19th, Sunny.
" "Could this be what made Mr. Xu stay?" Li Yu wondered, continuing to read.
"July 20th, Sunny.
Happy, happy... This ceremony... Will I... will I ever leave here...?"
"What a strange diary entry!" Li Yu stared at the crooked handwriting, utterly bewildered.
The earlier entries by Teacher Xu were beautifully written, neat and upright, seemingly the work of someone who had studied calligraphy. But this entry…
there were only two possibilities: either Teacher Xu hadn't written it himself, but that was highly unlikely; or… Teacher Xu was so impulsive while writing that he couldn't even control his hand. Of course, the content of the diary was even stranger. What had made Teacher Xu change his mind so quickly, deciding not to leave?
The two had walked down the mountain together, and the atmosphere was rather somber.
Li Yu turned to the next page.
Deputy Director Zhang finished speaking and immediately ran out, the loud slam of the door confirming that he had locked it.
"July 20th, Cloudy"
—In this entry, Teacher Xu's handwriting had returned to its previous style.
"Brothers, where are we going?" Li Yu asked cautiously.
"It's here!" After Deputy Director Zhang passed away, two strong young men came over and lifted Li Yu up on either side.
Why did they decide to stay so quickly? What was it? What kind of equipment could cause such a drastic change in a person in such a short time? What secrets does this village hold?
A whole host of questions flooded Li Yu's mind. But he was too lazy to think about it anymore. Anyway, it should be recorded in Mr. Xu's diary, so he turned to the next page.
"July 21st, sunny..."
"Snap!" Suddenly, everything went dark.
