Like height, weight, and facial features, the penis varies greatly in size and girth. Shi Chengli in China measured the penis size of 1412 healthy young men and the erect penis length of 126 healthy men. The results showed that in the flaccid state, the longest was 14.5 cm, the shortest 4 cm, with an average of 8.375 cm; the largest circumference was 12 cm, the smallest 4.5 cm, with an average of 8.3 cm. In the erect state, the longest was 16 cm, the shortest 9 cm, with an average of 12 cm; the largest circumference was 14 cm, the smallest 8 cm, with an average of 10.75 cm.
The method of measuring penis length is very important; it involves measuring both the flaccid and erect states. The room temperature should be around 25°C during measurement. After the patient has calmed down and rested appropriately, gently lift the penis horizontally with your hand. Use one end of a rigid ruler to press firmly against the pubic symphysis, compressing the subcutaneous fat layer as much as possible. Use the other end of the ruler, with the external urethral orifice of the glans penis as a reference. The reading is the length of the penis in its flaccid state. Then, use a tape measure to measure the circumference of the penile shaft 1 cm from the coronal ridge. Because patients are often nervous or uncomfortable in the examination room environment, they often cannot achieve an erection in front of the doctor. Therefore, the stretched length of the penis is often used instead of the erect length.
