After drinking

I ran downstairs, out of the building, and out of the village. All along the way, I desperately hoped to

bump Xiaoying. Unfortunately, all I saw were strangers looking at me with puzzled expressions as I ran frantically. I hailed a

taxi and rushed to the riverbank, then rented a small boat to head towards the island in the middle of the river where my father lived.

Sitting in the boat, my feelings were complicated. Would I see Xiaoying when I got to my father's?

This feeling was a mixture of anticipation and fear. My heart was pounding, and my breathing became increasingly uneven, highlighting my

inner tension. When my boat was halfway there, I received a call from Xiaoying.

"Hello, honey, have you arrived?" Xiaoying's voice was very quiet on the other end of the phone; I couldn't tell where

she was.

"Yes, I'm here. I'll check into the hotel soon." The small boat was electric, so there was no engine noise; it

was very quiet. I don't know why I lied on the phone. Was I afraid of scaring Xiaoying and missing something?

I carefully listened to Xiaoying's voice on the phone, trying to discern any unusual tone,

but I found nothing amiss.

"Have you finished helping Dad? Are you home yet?" I asked, feigning a normal tone, hoping to use this

opportunity to inquire if she was home and where she was.

"Ah, I'm done. Since you're not home, I felt bored alone. I've already left Dad's and

am going shopping with my best friend. When you get there, drink less alcohol at your dinner with your colleagues, take care of yourself, and get some rest,"

Xiaoying quickly explained, perhaps afraid I was about to guess something.

"Oh, that's good. Don't stay out too late, get home early, and be careful at home." Hearing

Xiaoying say she was going shopping with her friend seemed to confirm one of my two suspicions.

Hearing this, I felt a slight disappointment, but also a sense of relief.

After a few brief words with Xiaoying, I hung up.

I remained seated in the small boat. Since Xiaoying wasn't with my father, what was

the point of me taking the boat to see him? I was about to tell the boat to return to the riverbank when I looked up and saw that the island where my father lived was already very close

. Sigh, since I was already so close, I might as well go see him. First, I doubted whether Xiaoying was telling the truth;

second , since I was almost there, I might as well go see my father.

My father's house was on the north side of the island, while the boat docked on

the south side, so once the boat reached the island, my father's house was completely out of sight. I paid the fare, got the boat's phone

number, and then went ashore, heading towards my father's house. There were a few fishermen's houses and

a small tourist facilities for the island. There were probably dozens of houses, like a small village.

My father's house was in a rather unusual location, situated in the center of a densely forested area of the island, surrounded by fences, far from the other residents' homes . So the area around my father's house was very quiet; without a key, it was impossible to enter the wind power plant's grounds . Fortunately, because I had often helped my father with the house recently, he gave me a set of keys to all the gates of the island's power station, including all the keys to my father's house. Passing by the other residents' houses, I hurried along a forest path towards my father's house. The house was situated on higher ground, surrounded by tall grass and trees, making it very secluded. I glanced at the time; it was just 5 PM. Because home. The days were short, and it was already getting dark. I carefully opened the gate to my father's enclosed area, very gently. Then I carefully followed the path towards my father's house. The lights from my father's house slowly came into view. It was already dark, and my father's it, my heart tightened. In my father's house, in the bedroom where my father and Aunt Zhang were , the curtains were drawn tightly, revealing only a faint light. Because my father was newly married, I had bought him thick red silk curtains, so even with the light on, it was impossible to see inside through the window. My heart suddenly tightened. Could Xiaoying still be at my father's house? If so, what were they doing ? I moved stealthily towards my father's house. Once close, I noticed the main door was open. The layout of my father's house was typical of rural houses: a main door in the center, leading to a three-meter-long corridor with bedroom doors on either side, and the kitchen door at the end. I went to my father's bedroom window, pressed my ear against the glass, and strained to hear anything coming from inside. I held my breath, but after listening for a long time, there was absolutely no sound. Had I been imagining things? It seemed Xiaoying wasn't there. At that moment, a sense of relief washed over me. Since I was already there, I decided to go inside and check on my father. As for the reason for my sudden visit, I had already thought it through. As soon as I entered the main house , I noticed the kitchen light was on at the end of the hallway. The door was also open, and I could hear clanging sounds coming from inside ; it seemed my father was preparing dinner. I didn't disturb him in the kitchen but instead went into his bedroom. His bedroom door was also open; after all, the house had just been renovated, and it needed to be ventilated to dissipate harmful gases like formaldehyde. Once inside, I saw a low table already set up in the center of the room, with two dishes on it.

Hearing the sounds of cooking coming from the kitchen behind the bedroom, I couldn't help but smile. My father

seemed to be living quite comfortably on his own; he had cooked so many dishes, and quite a feast at that.

"Xiaoying, this dish is ready. Take it upstairs. I'll finish the last dish, and then we'll eat."

Just as I was standing in the bedroom, feeling pleased with myself, I suddenly heard my father's voice, and he called out

Xiaoying's name. Hearing this, I froze, cold sweat instantly pouring

down my face.

"Okay, Dad, one more dish is enough. Don't cook any more; we can't possibly finish it all." Before

I could react, Xiaoying's voice rang out. That voice was incredibly familiar. Yes,

it was Xiaoying. She had lied on the phone; she hadn't left my father's place at all; she was still

here. But why did she lie to me on the phone? Was she planning to spend the night with my father, or was she just having dinner at his house

as usual ? Perhaps she was afraid I'd overthink things, after all, her previous intimidation had

thoroughly frightened her.

Before I could even recover from my thoughts, I heard Xiaoying's high heels; it seemed she was carrying

groceries down the hallway towards the bedroom. What to do? This situation was too sudden. It was too late to rush out of my father's

bedroom . If

I did, I'd be spotted by Xiaoying in the hallway. There was no time to think. My eyes darted quickly around my father's room, searching for a hiding

place. Before entering his house, I had already prepared an excuse and reason to deal with him, but

I hadn't thought of a reason to deal with Xiaoying at all.

Then I saw the curtains in my father's bedroom were already drawn. This scene seemed familiar. I remembered

that time I eavesdropped at the hospital; I had hidden behind the curtains. Luckily,

the curtains were bigger and thicker than the ones in the hospital. It was too late now; I could only quickly hide

behind the curtains. There was still some distance between the curtains and the wall. My back was pressed tightly against the wall; I

didn't dare lean against the glass, lest the reflection from outside in the night illuminate my silhouette.

Less than three seconds after I hid behind the curtains, Xiaoying entered the bedroom carrying a plate of food.

I held my breath as still as possible. Unlike at the hospital, this time I

was incredibly close to the dining table, even though my father's bedroom was much smaller than the hospital room.

Xiaoying was dressed formally—a blazer and a skirt, typical business

attire. She wore an apron, indicating they had been busy cooking in the kitchen. After placing the food on

the table , she set out the bowls and chopsticks. I had just escaped a close call, but I dared not breathe, afraid

Xiaoying would hear me. My heart was pounding, as if it might leap out of my mouth at any moment.

A moment later, my father, also wearing an apron, emerged from the kitchen. After placing the dishes on the table, he

gently wiped his forehead with the back of his hand and smiled slightly at Xiaoying. It was clear that the awkwardness and unfamiliarity they had felt during their afternoon alone

working had diminished considerably.

"Let's eat..." The father sat down first, handing Xiaoying her bowl and chopsticks.

"Okay..." Xiaoying sat down as well.

Looking at the two of them, their relationship seemed much more relaxed than before, as if they had truly settled into a father-in-law/daughter- in-law relationship.

Seeing that although they were close, they unintentionally maintained a proper distance, I knew I was overthinking it. Perhaps

nothing had actually happened between them before I arrived; they were simply tidying up the house. Through the curtains, although they were thick, I was so close, and the room was clean and brightly lit that I could still see everything behind them quite clearly, even Xiaoying and her father's expressions. "Xiaoying, thank you for agreeing to have dinner with me tonight." Before even using his chopsticks, the father placed a bite of food on Xiaoying's , then poured her half a glass of red wine before starting to eat. "Don't mention it, Dad. You cooked for me; I should be thanking you." Xiaoying avoided her father's gentle gaze and accepted the red wine he offered. From his eyes, she understood that his feelings for her had never changed, only reality forced them apart. "You helped me all afternoon; it's only right that Dad treats you to dinner. Besides, this kind of atmosphere won't be repeated." Seeing Xiaoying avoid his gaze, her father couldn't help but feel disappointed. He sensed her distance, but who could he blame? It was simply that they hadn't met the right person at the right time. "Dad, let's eat peacefully and not think too much. Let bygones be bygones. You 're getting married now, and I sincerely hope you'll be happy. Really, a May-December romance is so precious." Xiaoying sensed the sadness in her father's words. She seemed to be affected by the atmosphere, her eyes revealing a touch of melancholy and a lingering reluctance, along with a hint of reminiscence. "Thank you, and I hope you and Jincheng can live a good life together. May you two accompany each other until old age, unlike me... Okay, eat, but don't drink too much..." The father said, seemingly thinking of his deceased mother, his face showing a hint of remembrance and guilt. The two clinked glasses and took a small sip of red wine. The two ate their meal, but perhaps because of the somber conversation , the atmosphere at the table was somewhat somber. Watching them eat, sipping their wine, and seeing the delicious food on the table, I pursed my lips. I hadn't eaten dinner yet, and to be honest, I was actually quite hungry. I could only watch them eat through the curtains, praying that my stomach wouldn't betray me. The two at the table fell silent, slowly eating their meal. Xiaoying ate while watching...

Looking at the room she had spent the afternoon tidying up, at the confetti, the brand-new furniture, the new

red bedding, and the old wedding photo of her father and Aunt Zhang hanging on the wall, Xiaoying's eyes

seemed to grow increasingly heavy with reluctance and sadness. Her father

felt the same way; looking at Xiaoying, then at their surroundings, they both sighed softly in unison .

As her father's wedding drew closer, the complex emotions they had accumulated over this period

seemed

to be slowly

releasing. They didn't clink glasses, but each drank their own red wine, seemingly burdened by their sorrows

, trying to drown their sorrows in alcohol. It was clear that they weren't thinking much at the moment, simply using alcohol

to vent and mask their inner turmoil. They didn't speak,

perhaps Lost in their own thoughts,

they poured themselves another glass after finishing one, and before they knew it, the bottle of red wine was empty. Although the red wine had

a relatively low alcohol content, Xiaoying and her father already had a slight blush on their faces...
