A Survey Report on Incest in China

Experts from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences, Yunnan Normal University, and other institutions, while researching adolescent sex education and sexual crimes, discovered that incest, a phenomenon among close relatives, also exists in China, which should raise serious concerns.
Associate Professor Zheng Tiansheng stated in his article that the largest proportion of incest cases in China after the founding of the People's Republic was incest between siblings (i.e., brother-sister or sister-brother incest), accounting for approximately 80% of the total surveyed cases. Other forms, such as father-daughter incest and mother-son incest, while less common, also account for a certain proportion. The main reasons for incest between siblings include: lack of necessary supervision and education from parents; parental divorce or remarriage leading to insufficient time to care for their children; housing shortages causing opposite-sex siblings to live together for extended periods; excessive intimacy and attachment between opposite-sex siblings; children receiving premature sexual exposure; and parents' immoral behavior being discovered by their children. In recent years, with the significant increase in the number of only children and improved housing conditions, incest between siblings has decreased significantly.
Example: In Dali City, Yunnan Province, a family owned only one apartment. A brother and sister had lived in the same room with their parents since childhood. The older brother, in his adolescence, had repeatedly witnessed his parents' intimate moments, making him even more familiar with his sister's body as they slept in the same bed. Ignorance and curiosity drove him to have sexual relations with his 13-year-old sister.
Experts, including Associate Researcher Xu Youru from the China Health Education Institute, have found that due to the instability of modern marriages and mothers' excessive pampering of their children, incest between mothers and sons can occur when there is an emotional vacuum and excessive sensory stimulation. Surveys show that there are indeed some such cases, with the highest proportion of teenagers aged 16 to 18 having had relations with their mothers, far exceeding other age groups. Single mothers, if not careful in their daily lives, are highly likely to become the object of their sons' sexual impulses. While the absolute number of cases of mother-son incest is not large, the psychological and physical harm to the individuals involved and its social impact are undeniable.
Example: A mother who graduated from Tsinghua University gradually began to rely on her son as her emotional support after her divorce for many years. The son, in turn, saw himself as his mother's protector. This mother even demanded that her son sleep with her on lonely or stormy nights for her company. The mature woman's body and scent subtly opened the floodgates of the boy's heart. Finally, one day, after they undressed, the boy suddenly embraced his mother. The mother, initially surprised, did not resist, allowing this naive child to experience a distorted form of sexual pleasure. This led to the tragic murder of his mother by her son several years later.
Example: A case handled by a procuratorate in Henan Province in the late 1970s was shocking: a widowed but successful female chief physician, appointed as the vice president of a hospital at the age of 50, committed suicide by poisoning herself a few days later. The case file stated that she suffered from excessive work pressure and her only son's poor academic performance, leading to mental exhaustion and a mental breakdown. Her 18-year-old son wept uncontrollably at his mother's memorial service, a heartbreaking sight. Ten years later, the female doctor's son was now an assistant engineer in a geological survey team. He worked at a remote site, and due to limited contact with people, he was still unmarried. The only other engineer he worked at the same site was a woman he called "Auntie." The older woman took a liking to this intelligent and honest young man, and out of maternal instinct, she took meticulous care of him. The young man once again felt the warmth of family, and the two talked about everything like mother and son. The female engineer also treated the young man like her own son, without any suspicion. At night, the young man slept in the office, while the female engineer slept in the instrument room inside, but she never locked the door. She never imagined that this seemingly most reliable young man would rape her one night. She never dreamed that a young man who blushed at the sight of girls would prey on a woman in her fifties. After receiving a report, the young man was arrested and imprisoned. Only then did the truth come to light: he suffered from a severe Oedipus complex. Growing up under his mother's doting care and strict discipline, the close emotional and physical relationship fostered a fear of her authority coupled with a fascination with her full, fair body. After his mother's promotion, the two celebrated with drinks. His mother's flushed face and unusually soft voice moved him, and he could no longer restrain himself. He rushed into her bedroom and pounced on his drunken mother. Her strong resistance was ineffective, and the gruesome scene unfolded. Terrified afterward, he knelt before his mother's bedside for most of the night. His mother didn't punish him; she simply looked at her naked body and wept until dawn. Neither mother nor son spoke, and the mother didn't report it to the police. She chose another path to maintain her dignity, still protecting her unfilial son. Years of repentance failed to resolve the young man's psychological issues; this scene repeated itself 10 years later. With timely psychological treatment, none of these three people would have met such an end.
Secondly,
the current state of sex education in China is embarrassing; there isn't even a unified national sex education syllabus. "Current puberty education is inadequate to meet the needs," asserted Nie Zhenwei, associate professor at Beijing Normal University, in an interview. "In fact, with the improvement of living standards, the onset of puberty among Chinese teenagers is one year earlier than it was 10 years ago. However, puberty education is not yet widespread, which puts teenagers who haven't yet received enlightenment on sexual self-protection at greater risk of harm."
Corresponding to this severe inadequacy of sex education is the earlier onset of precocious puberty among teenagers. If this contradiction is not properly addressed, it will lead to many serious social problems. A survey by the China Youth Education Association shows that the proportion of unmarried sexual behavior, sexual harassment, and sexual crimes among Chinese teenagers is increasing year by year, and even many previously little-known cases of incest have emerged. Associate researcher Xu Xiuru, an expert in adolescent sexual psychology counseling, has encountered many such heartbreaking cases. Many of the cases she introduced involved incestuous relationships between adolescent boys and their mothers. "If a boy's vague sexual urges during puberty are directed towards his mother, isn't this a tragedy of modern times?"
In many families, not only is sex education for children lacking, but even parents are largely ignorant about sexual issues. Parents' words and actions play a crucial role in a child's development, especially the mother. The mother is the first and most frequently encountered woman after a boy's birth, and the appropriateness of her parenting style determines whether the boy can grow into a mentally healthy man. Some mothers' displays of affection towards their sons are merely expressions of affection, without sexual content, yet they have a negative impact on the boy's mental development, even leading to domestic sexual abuse and potentially ruining the lives of two generations.
For example, last year's *Gansu Legal Digest*, issue 9, reported on a three-person family in Northwest China: the 45-year-old father, Y, was a road worker for the provincial highway bureau; the mother, W, was originally an accountant at a paper mill, but was laid off due to poor business; and their 20-year-old son, Y, was their only child, attending vocational school. Father Y, with only a primary school education, was a typical burly man from Northwest China—brave, forthright, and somewhat rough. Mother W, originally from Shandong, was timid and weak-willed. She moved to the Northwest with her parents, who had been wrongly labeled as rightists, at a young age. W's family had benefited from Y's family on several occasions, and for this reason, W, four years older than Y, willingly married him. W was a graduate of a distance learning university and enjoyed her family's calligraphy, while Y was almost illiterate. His life seemed to consist of only three things: working, drinking, and sleeping with his wife. The two had nothing in common and their personalities were completely opposite, yet they still managed to live a bumpy life together for most of their lives. Little Y grew up in this family.
Y spent most of the year working in the field, rarely home. When he returned, Y's first act was to pin W down on the bed and release his pent-up sexual desire, regardless of day or night, or whether their son, Little Y, was home—a routine he maintained for years. As W grew older and her health deteriorated, she sometimes felt extremely unwilling, but she never refused and continued to fulfill her duties as a wife. Little Y witnessed this scene many times from the time he was old enough to understand. As a child, Xiao Y hated his father and pitied his mother for this. After starting middle school, he became accustomed to it and even envied his father, sometimes actively seeking opportunities to spy on his parents' private lives.
Y was skilled at both housework and other household chores, single-handedly shouldering the burden of supporting the family. He often had a smiling face when sober, but he was a heavy drinker and frequently picked fights with his wife after drinking. Traditional feudal culture, a sense of gratitude, and his personality made W submissive to her husband's abuse. Xiao Y had once considered protecting his mother from being bullied, but later he became indifferent to it all.
When Y returned home on vacation, he often invited a group of his cronies over for heavy drinking. After a few rounds of drinks, Y's buddies would start rambling and talking nonsense, mostly about women, and the table was filled with vulgar language. Little Y, in the inner room, had no interest in anything else; he particularly enjoyed eavesdropping on these conversations, and he could recite the dirty jokes and bedroom experiences the adults told by heart.
W, who was unemployed at home, sometimes even hoped that Y would end his vacation soon so she could have some peace and quiet. W enjoyed practicing calligraphy at home and talking with her son, Little Y. W and her husband rarely spoke; they would often argue after just a few words. Talking with Little Y was different. She would often ramble on to her son about the past and complain about her husband, regardless of whether he was listening. Calligraphy and her son, Little Y, became W's two major sources of emotional support, and her indulgence of her son was virtually limitless. Little Y began to speak in his father's tone and, like his father, did heavy work for his physically weak mother. His views on women were remarkably similar to his father's: women were merely slaves who bore children and served their husbands, and his mother, W, was no exception.
On the eve of the 2000 Spring Festival, Y returned home with a 20,000 yuan bonus. Perhaps because the money had come so easily, Y was in a particularly good mood. When Y went shopping for New Year's goods, he even bought his wife a genuine leather coat, which touched W deeply. She cooked several good dishes to welcome her husband back. After half a bottle of Wuliangye (a type of Chinese liquor), Y's alcohol kicked in. He suddenly picked up his wife W, who hadn't finished eating, and staggered towards the inner room. W felt extremely embarrassed in front of her son, but she couldn't break free from her husband Y's iron-like grip. Nearly fifty years old, W was extremely weary of marital relations, but looking at the leather coat, she felt she couldn't refuse her husband's advances. Y, who had been living in the makeshift dormitory for six months, was driven to desperation. He didn't bother to lock the door or draw the curtains, nor did he care whether his wife agreed. He hastily stripped off his clothes and pressed himself against her. Drunk and confused, Y didn't notice the pair of eyes peeking through the crack in the door. Little Y witnessed this horrifying scene from beginning to end, seeing it far more clearly than before, until his father, Y, got off
his naked mother, W. Only then did Little Y leave. Both of his previous girlfriends had broken up with him because of his rude personality and frivolous behavior. Prematurely mature, Little Y, after long periods of repression, couldn't bear this shock. He set his sights on his mother, W. The lack of proper family education and his father's treatment of his mother had completely robbed Little Y of his sense of social morality and self-control. Two weeks later, his father, Y, was leaving for the construction site again. Little Y eagerly awaited his father's departure. After seeing his father off at the long-distance bus station, Little Y breathed a sigh of relief. That very night, he couldn't wait to commit his heinous act against his mother, W. To bolster his courage, he drank a few sips of the wine his father, Y, had left behind. Then, he openly made sexual advances towards his mother, W. Y's words struck W like a bolt from the blue. Coming from a traditional family, W could tolerate her husband's behavior, but how could she accept anything beyond the bounds of propriety? W was on the verge of a mental breakdown and vehemently refused. As he spoke, Y pounced on W's bed. W fought desperately to defend herself. Y gradually gained the upper hand, pinning W beneath him and tearing off all her underwear, revealing her full allure. But W continued to struggle and writhe, leaving Y helpless. The two remained locked in a stalemate. W pleaded with her son through tears, but Y, driven by lust, was deaf to reason. He had completely forgotten the identity of the woman beneath him. W, already physically weak, was exhausted and could barely hold on. She felt despair and feared that Y's excited shouts would arouse the neighbors' suspicion. After receiving the promise of "just once," W relented, and Xiao Y finally succeeded, desperately thrusting into the depths of her body. Evil is Pandora's box; once opened, it cannot be closed, and the possibility of "just once" no longer exists. Xiao Y, regardless of day or night, would barge into his mother W's room whenever he felt lust, trampling on human ethics time and time again. W's resistance grew weaker and weaker; she resigned herself to her fate. Three months later, Y returned home from a construction site in the desert to visit his wife. He quickly sensed something was wrong: his wife W was very weak, somewhat delirious, and showed an unusual fear of marital sex. Furthermore, the unfamiliar look in her eyes when she looked at her son was also strange. Under her husband Y's interrogation, W finally revealed the truth. Enraged, Y beat his son Xiao Y severely and kicked him out of the house.
With 200 yuan given to him by his mother, Xiao Y, dragging his injured leg, embarked on a journey of wandering. To survive, he joined a criminal gang. He was quickly arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking and human trafficking. ...
Part Six:
Incest generally refers to sexual relations between family members that are unacceptable according to custom. The specific members who are forbidden may vary from society to society, but generally speaking, incest is taboo in all societies. In modern society, incest mainly refers to incest between close relatives such as sons, daughters, fathers, and mothers. The occurrence of incestuous behavior has certain subjective and objective factors. From a subjective perspective, incestuous individuals often have some psychological abnormalities or perverted tendencies, or some kind of mental illness. A few also have vices such as drug addiction and alcoholism. Most are withdrawn, lack a sense of security and responsibility, and are depressed. The inner world of incestuous individuals is often filled with self-imagination and self-worship. They have a self-centered view of life and may even believe that their behavior does not constitute incest. Most incestuous individuals have normal sexual function and normal sexual desires. They generally do not belong to the criminal personality type; it is only due to various external factors that they fall into the quagmire of sexual transgression. This influence likely begins from the moment they are born. Objectively speaking, incestuous individuals often live in abnormal or unhappy family relationships, and many share a common family history. There is a correlation between family economic and educational status and incestuous behavior. People living in lower socioeconomic strata and with less education are more likely to be involved in incestuous acts. However, many people from well-off families, with good education and social respect, also engage in incestuous behavior. Most incestuous acts can specifically include kissing, caressing, touching genitals, and sexual intercourse. It may begin as general physical contact, gradually focusing on sexual organs until it reaches some form of sexual intercourse. Among
various types of incest, father-daughter incest and mother-son incest are extremely cruel to the victims, especially female victims, whose effects often last a lifetime. The daughter in father-daughter incest and the mother in mother-son incest are the specific victims. The harm caused to victims of incest can be divided into two types: seduction-based and violence-based. In the former, the psychological harm may be greater than the physical harm, while in the latter, both physical and psychological harm are severe. The outward signs of incest victims include physical, behavioral, and verbal manifestations. Physical signs include genital injuries, pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and frequent nightmares. Behavioral signs include apathy towards work and life, lack of concentration, abnormal mental state, altered worldview, running away from home, alcoholism or drug abuse, frivolous or promiscuous behavior, preference for solitude, or refusal to socialize. Verbal signs refer to the victim unintentionally expressing particular resentment or fear towards their family or a specific family member. However, unlike rape, incest has a slow and gradual development process. Victims may consider their familial relationship with their father or son, and the family's reputation, often remaining silent. Sometimes, victims may not even know whether this behavior is right or reasonable, and may even try to justify and excuse their father's or son's actions internally, silently accepting the harm after being victimized. Incestuous acts in certain special circumstances do not only cause pain; many incestuous partners exhibit considerable affection, understanding, happiness, and psychological balance. Thus, the intertwined feelings of pleasure and guilt trap the victim in a more difficult situation, a form of violence masked by tenderness and affection. The various characteristics of incest sometimes obscure the extent of harm to the victim, making it difficult for society and others to detect, thus allowing the harm to persist for a long time. Therefore, the accumulated harm of incest may exceed that of other sexual offenses.
If society adopts a more proactive intervention attitude towards incestuous acts, the harm suffered by victims will be greatly reduced. Organizations such as the China Youth Education Association, the China Institute of Education and Health, and the All-China Women's Federation have begun to strengthen their attention to this issue. Several newspapers and periodicals, including *Guangdong Health News*, *China Women's News*, *Ren Zhi Chu*, *Xining Evening News*, and *Legal World*, have also reported on sexual abuse incidents involving families in recent years.
Example: The *Guangdong Health News* received a letter from a reader, a medical worker at a hospital in Guangzhou. The letter stated that the hospital's gynecology department had treated a 45-year-old woman from out of town who, accompanied by her sister, underwent an abortion. Due to incomplete curettage, she experienced severe bleeding and was hospitalized. Reportedly, this woman had suffered two miscarriages in less than a year, a very dangerous situation for someone her age. Faced with the doctor's complaints, the pale-faced woman appeared dejected and helpless. Later, through the Provincial Women's Federation, it was learned that the woman's pregnancy was due to her own son. The doctor on duty had seen the young man who visited his mother; he was handsome and appeared to be under 20. Who would have thought he was the culprit who harmed his mother? It turned out that the woman was a clerk at a public institution, divorced years ago, and living with her child at her parents' home. The child had suffered from nystagmus due to drug poisoning as a child, dropping out of school before graduating from junior high, which led to his withdrawn, insecure, and willful personality. She worked during the day and tutored her child and cared for the elderly at night, keeping herself extremely busy. However, she only focused on her child's life and studies, neglecting his physical and psychological changes. This boy, lacking interaction with women, set his sights on his biological mother after reaching puberty. After being rejected, he attempted to force himself on her. The boy's mother, perhaps feeling guilty towards her disabled son, gave in after some struggle and was subsequently raped by him several times. The woman's sister wanted to seek legal help, but the woman refused, so they finally went to the provincial women's federation. To prevent further misfortune, the woman continued to live with her sister.
Example: The magazine *Legal System World* once published a bizarre story: In a certain area of Jiangnan, a young man surnamed Chen was released from labor camp at the age of 29 after being convicted of theft and robbery. Having not been with a woman for several years, Chen returned home feeling intensely sexually aroused and, unable to resist, thought of his biological mother. The depraved Chen forcibly assaulted his mother in broad daylight. Her screams attracted the attention of concerned neighbors, and Chen was imprisoned again.
Example: A middle-aged woman in Yunnan was coerced by her stepson into having sex with him multiple times, suffering severe psychological trauma and developing serious gynecological diseases.
Example: A 30-year-old woman from Henan was forced into prostitution in Xiamen, Fujian Province, and was later detained by the police. She admitted to having an affair with her biological father when she was 15, after which she went astray.
Example: A 14-year-old girl in Zhoushan went to a hospital for an abortion accompanied by a boy. When the doctor asked the boy to show his identification and to notify his parents, he became restless and speechless. After repeated questioning, the still-childish boy finally admitted that he was the girl's older brother and that he had had an inappropriate relationship with his sister while their parents were away.
Part Seven:
In our sexual attitudes, sexual relationships between family members of different generations or of the same generation are strictly prohibited. This is due to three main reasons: firstly, the supreme constraint of ethics and morality; secondly, the taboo surrounding physiological and genetic aspects; and thirdly, the severe psychological harm inflicted on the individuals involved. Therefore, such sexual relationships are called "incest." While incestuous relationships between mothers and sons are relatively rare, they do exist both historically and today, both domestically and internationally. Because contemporary society is dominated by male-dominated cultural traditions, and given the relatively low absolute incidence, incestuous relationships between mothers and sons are often concealed. Even when they do occur, the blame is often placed on the young person who has acted out of turn or exhibits mental abnormalities. In fact, many sex psychologists, both domestically and internationally, have pointed out that in families where incest has occurred, the mother bears an undeniable responsibility for the formation of her son's distorted personality and abnormal psychology. A survey by the China Youth Education Association indicates that in approximately 30% of incestuous mother-son cases, the mother is in a semi-active position. In these cases, some women, divorced, widowed, having unfaithful husbands, or experiencing marital discord, use their sons as a "substitute" for emotional expression. Others are overly close to their underage sons, ignoring gender differences and condoning or accepting their sons' transgressions. Mothers should pay particular attention: a son's attachment to his mother is innate, so guidance, education, and social interaction are crucial to guide it back onto the right path. It's difficult to guarantee that an adult woman's body won't tempt her son; therefore, careful consideration is needed in all aspects of family life, including conversations, daily routines, dressing, bathing, toileting, and marital intimacy, to avoid creating sexual connotations in the son's perception of his mother.
Example: "Life, Family..." An article titled "The Forbidden Sea That Shouldn't Have Been Crossed" (by Tang Xinrong from Hong Kong) appeared in the 1998 special issue of *Society*. An excerpt follows:
Mr. Xu is a crew member of a shipping company in Guangdong. Now thirty years old, he has the tall stature of his father and the fair complexion of his mother and sister. Like most sailors who live at sea, he is resilient, stubborn, and taciturn. Perhaps due to his personality, coupled with the nature of his profession involving long periods of travel, his romantic relationships have always ended in failure, and he remains single. Mr. Xu's father was the captain of a large container ship, having traveled the world and possessing extensive knowledge and experience. He passed away suddenly from a cerebral hemorrhage eight years ago. Mr. Xu's mother has been retired for several years. She was originally an actress in the Seamen's Union's cultural troupe. In her youth, she was beautiful, talented in singing and dancing, and the object of many young men's affections. However, she fell for Mr. Xu, who, despite his poor family background, possessed the demeanor of a Spanish sailor. After marriage, they had a son and a daughter, the older sister being two years older than the younger brother. Fishermen and sailors spend their lives battling the sea, constantly facing the threat of death. They value their offspring, especially sons, far more than other people. Xu was exceptionally pampered by her parents. Before his death, her father instructed his wife to take good care of the Xu family line. Later, her father sent his daughter abroad to study, and she has now settled and married there. Following her father's wishes, Xu enrolled in the Jimei Naval School to study marine engineering, and after graduation, she inherited her father's business.
Xu's fleet mainly sails the Southeast Asian route. Not everyone can be a seaman. Those who haven't experienced life at sea cannot imagine the extreme loneliness, boredom, and fear a seaman experiences during continuous voyages. One crew member on Xu's father's ship couldn't bear the torment and committed suicide by jumping overboard. Seamen also love their wives most deeply; only seamen truly understand the pain of being without a woman. Their hearts, wounded by the sea winds, need the comfort of their wives. After a period of intense and tedious work at sea, sailors need proper relaxation and adjustment, both physically and mentally. A wife's pampering is far more effective than fishing, swimming, or hunting. When sailors return to sea, those with their beautiful wives, brimming with energy, often draw envious glances from single sailors like Xu. Xu is a diligent and capable engine room foreman. Unlike some younger sailors who like to slack off, or some single sailors who enjoy watching pornography, he doesn't seek out alluring Thai women. Company leaders are satisfied with Xu's performance, but they are unaware of the bitterness in his heart. Xu is also a human being with flesh and blood; his soul needs comfort, and his desires need release. He tries to suppress his inner desires by working tirelessly. When lonely and bored, he secretly looks at the photo of his mother tucked in his diary, reminiscing about the feeling of nestling in her arms as a child. During his rest days, he tries to spend as much time as possible with his mother at home, telling her about his experiences in Southeast Asia while massaging her shoulders and back, as she suffers from rheumatism.
In June of this year, Xu, who had been exchanging leave for his married companions several times, finally came ashore. He rushed home excitedly, this time able to take three months of leave. But during this period, an unexpected thing happened. Mother and son, who hadn't seen each other for nearly half a year, were reunited. Xu's mother was especially happy, busying herself every day to prepare the delicacies her son couldn't eat at sea. Xu's mother was fifty-four years old this year, her figure was already bloated, and her movements were not as agile as in her youth. In the eyes of other young men, Xu's mother, who was fair-skinned and cheerful, was already a kind-faced and respected middle-aged woman, but in Xu's eyes, who had a morbid psychology, she was still as charming as a young girl. That noon, there was a sudden power outage, and the air conditioner stopped working, making the room as stuffy as a steamer. After lunch, Xu's mother, wearing a short-sleeved shirt and shorts, sat on the edge of her bed, fanning herself, with her son sitting beside her. Xu's mother, who was bloated and afraid of the heat, also unbuttoned her silk shirt, something she had never been too shy about in front of her children as she got older. Her large, snow-white breasts suddenly sprang to the surface, coupled with her rounded, full waist and thighs, making Xu lose control. He abruptly embraced his mother, pressing his face between her breasts. Xu's mother, unaware of what was happening, tried to push her son away. But the aroused Xu wouldn't let go. He voiced his long-suppressed desire. Hearing this, Xu's mother was immediately overwhelmed with shame, her face flushed red. She wondered if she had misheard and slapped her son. Xu released her, but continued to pour out his heart. Xu's mother's thoughts became chaotic. She understood her son's distress: in ancient times, people had many children by thirty; her son was also thirty, still single; the desire of men at sea for women was unparalleled, her husband returning home at thirty like a wolf, wanting to devour her; and she herself was now quite old… Thinking of this, Xu's mother wavered, unsure what to do. Seeing his mother silent with her head down, Xu felt his opportunity had arrived. He pushed her onto the bed and immediately began to pull down her underwear. The thought of exposing her last vestige of female privacy to her son, coupled with his lewd actions of touching her breasts and genitals, filled Xu's mother with nausea and shame. She forcefully kicked Xu off the bed, then curled up, covered her face, and sobbed. Xu, somewhat frightened, said a few soft words and quietly left. That afternoon, Xu's mother came out and found her son gone, the living room littered with cigarette butts. A bitter mix of emotions welled up inside her. She imagined her son suffocating and going crazy in the dimly lit engine room, and she also imagined him contracting AIDS after having sex with a Thai woman. She remembered her husband's dying words… Xu returned after dark. His mother had prepared dinner and was waiting for him. He realized she was no longer angry and felt relieved. During dinner, Xu timidly apologized to his mother. His mother remained silent for a while, then said, "You can come over to sleep tonight." Xu hesitated, looking at his mother, whose expression was unreadable. His mother was a typical Chinese woman, traditional, dutiful, and cautious. In her youth, she had blushed at her husband's affectionate behavior; now, at her advanced age, she was about to commit such an unforgivable act. She felt she was going crazy and didn't want to think about it anymore, letting things take their course. She made the bed and slowly undressed. After showering, Xu cautiously went to his mother's room. Seeing her already in bed, he got on the bed and pulled back the blanket. The body he had known since childhood, the body that had captivated him, was now naked before him. Xu's lust was reignited; his male instincts suppressed his conscience, and his courage grew. He parted his mother's legs, looked at the bulge between them, and then bent down. Xu's mother kept her head tilted to the side and her eyes closed. When her last line of defense was breached, she felt as if she had been thrown into hell. Xu finally climbed off his mother, satisfied, and let out a long sigh while staring at the ceiling. He then heard his mother calmly say, "Go back!" He wisely returned to his room and fell into a deep sleep, but Xu's mother didn't sleep a wink all night. From that day on, guilt haunted Xu. He felt he had let his mother down and was even more ashamed to face his father in the afterlife. Yet, every night, he couldn't help but push open his mother's door. He knew he was currently like an addicted opium addict, unable to break free. Xu's mother was almost constantly restless. Each time, she numbly endured it, trying not to think about or see what was happening to her. She tried to think of nonsensical things, hoping time would pass quickly. Sometimes her son's recklessness caused her pain, but she endured it anyway.
For a month, Xu's mother, who had previously been healthy, often felt listless, weak in her limbs, and experienced discomfort in her lower body. Just then, her daughter, who lived in Canada, returned home to visit. The daughter noticed her mother's poor complexion and, through subtle clues, discovered a hidden secret. However, instead of flying into a rage, this Columbia University anthropology PhD understood the cause of such a phenomenon and decided to resolve the problem herself. First, she accompanied her mother to the hospital for a checkup. The diagnosis revealed slight redness and swelling in the vulva, accompanied by acute vaginitis. Seeing the results, the daughter was heartbroken. She resented her mother's foolishness and was also furious at her brother's heartlessness. She then had a long talk with her brother, who was filled with remorse and resolved to end this upside-down relationship. Following a method of psychological transference described in foreign literature, the daughter introduced her brother to a girlfriend. This woman was a florist, five years older than him, mature, stable, gentle, and considerate. The two quickly fell in love, and Xu has now overcome his trauma and is discussing marriage. The daughter then brought her mother to Canada, hoping the foreign environment would help her forget her painful past. Under her daughter's meticulous care, Xu's mother recovered and enjoyed her life abroad, though she still constantly worried about her son, who was a seaman.
Example: Associate Researcher Xu Xiuru, an expert in sex education and sexual psychology, once handled such a case. An 18-year-old high school senior was struggling with his studies; his previously excellent grades plummeted. He could no longer have normal conversations with a psychologist, and a preliminary diagnosis of schizophrenia was made. According to his relatives who accompanied him to counseling, he was entirely "harmed" by his mother: because his mother and father had a strained relationship, she had always slept in the same bed as her son. Now, his mother was hospitalized with cancer, and he couldn't bear the blow, leading to this tragic end.
Part Eight:
The taboo against incest is a legacy left to us by our ancestors. All ethnic groups and regions hold a negative attitude towards sexual relations between blood relatives. For the sake of social progress, we must never break this taboo. In recent years, some cases of incest within families among Chinese youth have caused concern among many. In fact, not only in mainland China, but also in Taiwan and Hong Kong, incestuous relationships between close relatives frequently occur and are often reported in the media. Ms. Peng Ye of the Taiwan Love and Care Education Foundation said, "Due to the confidentiality of current information tools, individuals feel safe, and we receive inquiries or requests for help from individuals who have had close sexual relationships every year via telephone and email." A senior psychologist at National Taiwan Normal University believes that while sexual protection programs and sex education for minors are much better than in the past, they still haven't reached the level required by society. More and more young people lack identification with traditional culture and public morality, leading to a surge in premarital pregnancy, teenage prostitution, adultery, incest, and other violations of social rules.
For example, there is a strange story in "Taiwan Life in All Its Forms" (Volume 16).
Ms. Chen, a 52-year-old single woman from Keelung, makes a living selling seafood. She has a 16-year-old son. Over a decade ago, she was diagnosed with uterine fibroids and could no longer conceive, leading to her being abandoned by her husband. Having a son late in life, Ms. Chen dotes on him excessively. Since her parents separated, her son had always slept in the same bed with his mother. Even after starting junior high school, he still acted like a child, enjoying crawling into his mother's bed and frequently touching her body, which Ms. Chen did not find inappropriate. Last year, as her son matured and gained some understanding of matters between men and women, he saw his mother undress for bed and, overcome by lust, pressed his genitals against her, attempting to force himself on her. Ms. Chen was initially shocked, but seeing that her son was unfamiliar with such matters, she actually assisted him, and this illicit relationship continued for several months. One day, Ms. Chen suddenly received a phone call from her son's teacher warning her that her son was frequently distracted in class and behaving extremely promiscuously. Ms. Chen felt remorseful and did not want to continue her immoral behavior. However, her son, having already experienced the pleasures of forbidden fruit, was unwilling to stop. In this predicament, Ms. Chen sought help from a mental health center, and both mother and son are currently receiving psychological treatment there. Such a case is truly rare and tragic.
Example: There was a news item in the Evening News Selected Articles (1994).
A-Chi, a Taiwanese teenager, is an illegitimate child. His mother used to work as a bar hostess in her youth, but later, as she aged and lost her looks, she switched to a legitimate profession, selling children's food. A-Chi lived with his grandmother from a young age until two years ago when his mother brought him to Taipei to attend high school. Upon arriving in Taipei, A-Chi discovered that his mother, emotionally empty, led a decadent life, changing lovers more frequently than bed sheets, often bringing strange men home for the night, and openly flirting and embracing men in front of her son. Under such influence, even the most innocent teenager would be corrupted. Having been exposed to sex from a young age, A-Chi finally made a shameless request to his mother to sleep with him. A-Chi's mother had a casual view of sex, thinking that it wouldn't matter if she did it once or twice, and foolishly agreed. Mother and son then engaged in absurd acts, and things quickly spiraled out of control. That day, when A-Qi came to harass her again, his mother was displeased and refused, citing her period as a reason for not being able to have sex. A-Qi didn't believe her, and his mother, forced into a corner, took out a blood-stained sanitary napkin from under her clothes and showed it to him. A-Qi still wouldn't let it go and started touching her inappropriately. His mother, unable to bear it any longer, grabbed a vase and smashed it over A-Qi's head. A-Qi immediately saw stars and bled profusely. From that moment on, the mother and son became estranged. In revenge, one night A-Qi broke into his mother's bedroom with a paratrooper knife and cut off the genitals of a man sleeping next to her. A-Qi was detained in a juvenile detention center for assault. The police intervention exposed the shameful affair between the mother and son, and A-Qi's mother, ashamed, quietly left Taipei. This incident was later listed as a typical case in Taiwan's youth sexual health education.
Part Nine
: How to prevent incestuous incidents that have already occurred in families from happening again? How to help young men with Oedipus complex overcome abnormal psychology and prevent them from committing incestuous acts? The best way is to seek the help of a psychologist. In recent years, with the gradual development of psychotherapy and psychological counseling in China, several well-known domestic psychologists have encountered cases in this area.
Example: Below is an analysis and commentary by a psychologist on the psychological symptoms of a young man.
[Case] XXX, male, 26 years old, university graduate, two years of work experience, has had a mother complex for 6 years. When he was a freshman in university, he accidentally glimpsed his mother's naked body while showering, which aroused his sexual excitement, accompanied by masturbation. Afterwards, he frequently sought opportunities to peep at his mother while she showered. When his mother discovered this, she simply covered the door with her clothes and did not reprimand him. Therefore, he became increasingly bold, often taking advantage of his mother's sleep to unbutton her pajamas under the light, look at her breasts, smell her genitals, and masturbate while lying next to her. The number of times was countless, and his mother never woke up during these acts. The patient's parents had a strained relationship; his mother had an extramarital affair and multiple extramarital sexual partners. The patient had repeatedly pretended to be asleep while watching his mother having sex, filled with intense passion. The patient had a sexual relationship with a young woman more than two years ago, but felt he had low libido and lacked passion. He needed to imagine having sex with his mother to reach orgasm, and he would have sexual fantasies whenever he had free time, always about his beautiful and voluptuous mother. He had a strong urge to possess his mother, but this was against ethics and morality, causing him great distress. Therefore, he sought help from a psychologist by phone.
His mother is beautiful and voluptuous, cheerful, passionate, and has a strong sex drive. She is highly educated, shrewd, and capable, and holds a dominant position in the family. She has a strained relationship with his father. The patient is the second child, with an older sister and a younger brother. He has always respected and loved his mother, but lacked affection for his father and even harbored some hatred towards him. The patient is timid, introverted, and not good at expressing himself.
[Analysis] The Oedipus complex in this case has the following causes:
1. On one occasion, a strong sensory stimulation caused him extreme sexual excitement and satisfaction. His sexual psychology quickly reached a state of saturation. Once he reached this state, he no longer tried anything else or considered it the best, thus forming the concept of possessiveness.
2. The mother's indulgence: Faced with her son's voyeurism and sexual harassment, the mother not only failed to criticize and correct him in person but also tacitly approved or feigned sleep to appease him, thus inadvertently condoning his misconduct and hindering the patient's psychosexual development.
3. The mother's unrestrained behavior: The mother had affairs with multiple men outside of marriage and engaged in sexual activity in the presence of her older son (feigning sleep), affecting the patient's psychosexual development and hindering the establishment of a correct sexual morality.
4. An unbalanced parental relationship: The mother plays a dominant role in the family, while the father becomes subordinate and passive, lacking a voice. The mother's strong role induces the patient to idolize and adore her from a young age.
5. The patient's personality traits: Timidity, cowardice, and poor communication skills prevent the patient from having the courage to obtain sexual pleasure through normal means. Sexual contact and fantasies with the mother, which are easily obtained and tacitly approved, are a shortcut.
6. The patient's unsatisfactory romantic life. The patient's current girlfriend is inferior in physique and temperament, and has a reserved and unpassionate personality, forming a stark contrast with his mother's alluring charm, making his possessiveness unbreakable.
To overcome this unethical Oedipus complex, the patient must do the following two things:
1. Discover the strengths of other women, overcome his reserved nature and lack of expression leading to sexual repression, create conditions, and fully enjoy legitimate sexual pleasure. Alternatively, he can seek a more suitable relationship, using the "black covers gray" principle to help overcome his inhumane Oedipus complex.
2. Establish a rational attitude towards life, cultivate a correct worldview, actively engage in work and social activities, fully explore his potential, strive for self-realization, demonstrate his self-worth, and seek higher levels of psychological satisfaction.
Conclusion:
I was shocked when I happened to see a case of incest between a mother and son in a legal file. At first, I couldn't believe it was true. Our nation has thousands of years of civilization. How could such moral depravity occur in a country that respects the elderly and cherishes the young, values etiquette, and prioritizes filial piety? While some sons might neglect their parents or have disputes with elders—actions that are considered shameful—they would never sexually assault their own mothers, much less use her as a long-term sexual object. The facts in this case are undeniable. A cloud of doubt lingered in my mind. Later, I found the answer in the writings of psychologists and sex education experts. Incest differs from other crimes like murder, theft, rape, and prostitution in its perpetrators' motivations. "Incestuous individuals often lack criminal personality" (as one expert put it). Incest is an involuntary act based on psychological abnormality, a manifestation of abnormal mental factors fostered by external circumstances. Therefore, legal constraints alone are far from sufficient. Moreover, due to the highly private nature of incestuous acts, victims often endure hardship, making legal intervention difficult. We should abandon the past simplistic and dismissive attitude towards incest and instead care for and help this special social group from the perspectives of psychological treatment, social ethics education, and sex education. Incest not only has a significant negative impact on many aspects of human thought, youth development and education, and the establishment of stable social relationships, but the harm to the families of those involved is also evident. In many of the cases I mentioned earlier, the fates of the perpetrators were mostly tragic, which may be an inevitable trend in incest. This serves as a strong warning to those who are currently committing or about to commit incest. Currently, the proportion of incest cases is not very high, and most young people can successfully embark on a positive and healthy life within a normal social and family environment. I believe that with the joint efforts of the whole society, incest can be gradually reduced or even eliminated in the near future.
