The term "***" was frequently used in Chinese public discourse. This term overly emphasizes
the male perspective, male power, and male interests in this activity, making it clearly inappropriate. "Partner swapping" would be more suitable. However, "partner swapping" is also an inappropriate usage. Even if we can extend the understanding of "partner" to all stable, intimate partnerships besides marriage, such as lovers, we still cannot remove the connotation of "swap" in Chinese, which implies an exchange where both parties can give something to the other. In other words, if a single man participates in the sexual activity of a married couple or lovers, since the single man did not bring a partner, there is no "swap," and therefore it is not "partner swapping." "Shared partner" might be more accurate. That is, sharing a spouse or lover with someone else. "Shared partner" applies to "partner swapping" between two or more couples or lovers, and it also applies to situations where a single man or woman participates in the sexual activity of other couples or lovers, because "shared partner" emphasizes "sharing" rather than "exchanging." Many couples also prefer to have a single man join them rather than a married couple. In terms of psychological experience, sometimes the stimulation from a single man joining in can be even stronger than that from another couple joining in.
