How to determine if you have kidney deficiency? ! ? {Part 1}

The first issue I want to address is the basic function of the kidneys. The kidneys are considered the foundation of one's innate constitution; this is a common saying. How do we understand this concept? Our lives originate from our parents, and the fundamental substance constituting life is kidney essence, which is stored in the parents' kidneys. Only when the parents' kidney qi is abundant can they have reproductive capacity. Women reach reproductive capacity at 14 years old (27), and men at 16 years old (28).
After a new life is formed, the life substances and information inherited from the parents are also stored in the kidneys. It is the original substance and driving force for the growth and development of the new life, and also the substance for nurturing the next generation. Therefore, we say that the kidneys are the foundation of one's innate constitution.
The kidneys are like the "rice jar"
in a house; throughout our life process, the kidneys are primarily responsible for storage. Our life process is a cycle of growth, storage, and repetition. In nature, growth and storage are manifested as: spring growth, summer flourishing, autumn harvest, and winter storage. Correspondingly in the human body, the liver governs growth, the heart governs flourishing, the lungs govern storage, and the kidneys govern storage. The kidneys we are discussing today are responsible for storage.
In nature, life goes through spring's birth, summer's growth, and autumn's harvest, finally entering a period of dormancy. In winter, nature presents a desolate landscape; on the surface, we see no signs of life. Trees wither, and animals hibernate. But life is hidden. Although the above-ground parts of trees are withered, their underground roots are teeming with life. Animals hibernate to conserve energy and preserve vital substances. Therefore, the characteristic of winter is "dormancy."
What is stored in winter? It is the substance and energy of life. In the human body, this substance and energy are stored in the kidneys. The kidneys are like our rice bin, a nation's granary, or a car's fuel tank. This is why Kim Jong-un emphasizes that food is more important than bullets, and why we often say that supplies must precede troops—all these refer to the need for storage. For the human body, this means protecting the kidneys' function of storing essence and vital energy. This is the crucial role the kidneys play in the life process: storage. This storage is vital for our bodies. Only when the kidneys store abundant essence and vital energy can we maintain good health in the coming year.
Introducing the specific functions of the kidneys :
1. Storing essence (sufficient kidney essence leads to vigorous spirit):
Essence is the most precious life substance for humans. The essence stored in the kidneys is divided into congenital essence and acquired essence. Congenital essence originates from the spleen and stomach.
People often say: a person needs essence, qi, and spirit. Think about what this means? It means that a person should have sufficient vital energy and vigorous spirit. What is the foundation of sufficient vital energy and vigorous spirit? It is sufficient essence. The *Neijing* says: "When a person is born, essence is formed first." Essence can transform into qi, and essence can generate spirit. Only with sufficient kidney essence can one have sufficient vital energy and vigorous spirit.
2. Governing sexuality, reproduction, growth and development (kidney deficiency can lead to infertility):
Just a few days ago, an infertile patient told me that his wife was pregnant. The reason for his infertility was low sperm count and low sperm motility. I treated him with kidney tonification for more than three months, and now he is cured. In recent years, there have been more and more infertile patients, and the treatment is mainly based on tonifying the kidneys.
Sexual function matures as kidney qi becomes abundant. At the age of 27 (24 for women) and 28 (28 for men), kidney qi is at its peak, and the "Tian Gui" (a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine) arrives. Women begin menstruation, and men experience nocturnal emission, marking sexual maturity and the attainment of reproductive capacity.
These significant changes at each physiological stage are external manifestations of changes in kidney qi, and the entire process of growth and development is governed by the kidneys. Think about it: which period in a person's life is the most beautiful? From a physiological perspective, women are most attractive between 21 and 35 years old, and men between 24 and 40 years old.
3. Kidneys govern bones, produce marrow, and connect to the brain (for memory decline, tonify
the kidneys). Consider why the elderly often experience bone pain and are prone to fractures? Why do the elderly experience memory decline? Because bone nutrition comes from bone marrow, which is produced from kidney essence. This is the kidney's role in governing bones and producing marrow. Our brain is composed of brain marrow, which is formed from spinal cord, which in turn is formed from bones. Therefore, the root of brain marrow is kidney essence. All problems related to intelligence are kidney problems. Whether it's intellectual disability in children or Alzheimer's disease in the elderly, treatment primarily focuses on tonifying the kidneys.
4. Governing Water (Water Metabolism is Managed by the Kidneys):
The kidneys also govern water metabolism. When people see a patient with edema, most assume it's a kidney problem. Clinically, we see that most kidney disease patients also have edema. This tells us that the kidneys govern water metabolism in our bodies. How do we understand "governing water"? There are two aspects. First, after the body ingests water, it must be excreted after metabolism. Therefore, excretion is a function of the kidneys. This is why Western medicine refers to the kidneys as part of the urinary system. Second, the body must retain water. This function of retaining water is also a function of the kidneys. This function is related to the kidneys' function of storing fluids.
5. Governing the Intake of Qi (A Unsteady Voice May Indicate Kidney Deficiency):
What organs are involved in our breathing? Everyone knows that breathing is related to our lungs, as they are the respiratory organs. The relationship between the lungs and breathing is very close. However, in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), breathing is not only related to the lungs but also closely related to the kidneys. The lungs govern exhalation; the function of exhaling air is the lungs. The kidneys govern the intake of qi; the function of inhaling air is the kidneys.
People often say, "Oh dear, I can only exhale, not inhale," or "My breath always seems to float up and can't sink." This is a problem of the kidneys not receiving qi. Many singers come to me for treatment, some saying, "Why does my voice always seem to float up and not sink?" Those who study vocal music know that sound production doesn't originate from the throat, but from the dantian (lower abdomen). This is what gives the voice texture, magnetism, and expressiveness. This is what we mean when we say the kidneys govern the reception of qi. For some elderly asthma patients, tonifying the kidneys to improve qi reception is essential for curing asthma.
6. Storing Will (A person's aspirations are also related to the kidneys)
The sixth function of the kidneys is to store will. What does storing will mean? It relates to our thinking activities. Will means remembering, and our memory is governed by the kidneys. It is connected to the function of governing bones, producing marrow, and connecting to the brain, as mentioned earlier. At the same time, will also means ambition. Whether a person has ambition largely depends on whether their kidney qi is sufficient. Think about it: if a person's kidney qi is weak, their memory is declining, and they are forgetful all the time, what ambition can they possibly have? A person's ambition is related to the sufficiency of their kidney qi.
7. The kidneys open into the ears and the two lower orifices (hearing loss may be due to kidney deficiency)
. Hearing is affected by kidney essence, so the quality of our hearing is related to kidney essence. Most elderly people experience hearing loss, which is related to the decline of kidney essence. The kidneys govern the two lower orifices. The anterior orifice mainly excretes urine and governs reproduction. All sexual, urinary, and reproductive problems are functions of the anterior orifice. For example, abnormal or difficult urination is related to the kidneys. Why do the kidneys also govern the posterior orifice? The posterior orifice mainly refers to the anus. A common example is constipation in most elderly people. This constipation is not due to dry stool, but mainly due to difficulty in defecation. Many people have normal bowel movements when they are young, but problems arise as they age. For constipation in the elderly, our main research focuses on the kidneys.
Clinically, there is another condition where the patient has diarrhea and has to get up at dawn every day; this is called "dawn diarrhea." Having to defecate at dawn is a typical case of diarrhea caused by kidney deficiency.
8. Its manifestation is in the hair (premature graying or hair loss should be addressed by tonifying the kidneys).
The condition of our hair is closely related to the function of our kidneys. Some people's hair turns white at a young age, which is called premature graying and is likely related to the kidneys. What does "its radiance is in the hair" mean? It means that the condition of our kidneys can be reflected in our hair; the condition of our hair is an external manifestation of the kidneys. So, if you look closely at a young man's hair, which is thick, shiny, and full of energy, but then notices that his hair is white and falling out, it indicates premature aging. Therefore, the condition of the hair suggests whether the kidney essence is sufficient. When treating hair problems, such as white or dry hair, we should attribute them to the kidneys.
9. Connecting with the Winter Qi (Why nourish the kidneys in winter?)
This question corresponds to the previously mentioned process of the kidneys storing energy. Another question is, why nourish the kidneys in winter? It's because the natural process of storing energy occurs in winter, and our kidneys are responsible for storing energy. Therefore, the kidneys, which are stored among the five internal organs, correspond to winter in nature. If you've ever used well water, you'll know that it's cool in summer and warm in winter. Why is it cool in summer and warm in winter? This teaches us a principle: changes in ground temperature depend on whether the Yang energy in nature is stored on the surface or underground. If Yang energy is stored on the surface, the temperature will be high, while the temperature underground will be low. If Yang energy descends and sinks underground, the surface temperature will be low, while the underground temperature will be high. Winter is characterized by a descending and concealing of Yang energy. Therefore, the kidney's function of storing energy is most important in winter. Tonifying the kidney in winter aligns with the deficiency of Yang energy in nature and the human body, ensuring that the replenished energy is stored effectively. While it's possible to tonify the kidney in spring, the replenished energy is more easily released and dispersed. What should be tonified in spring? The liver is best. This is the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which emphasizes the harmonious unity between our life processes and nature.
The above briefly introduced several functions of the kidney. The kidney is the foundation of innate essence, and its primary function in the life process is storage. The kidneys have nine basic functions: first, they store essence; second, they govern sexual reproduction and growth; third, they govern bones, produce marrow, and connect to the brain; fourth, they govern water; fifth, they govern the intake of qi; sixth, they store will; seventh, they open to the ears and the two lower orifices (urethra and anus); eighth, their health is reflected in the hair; and ninth, they correspond to the winter season.
Kidney deficiency causes premature aging .
From the brief introduction above, you should understand that none of our organs are more important than the kidneys; they are the foundation of our innate constitution. Because of their importance, and because kidney qi goes through a cyclical process from weak to strong and then from flourishing to declining, kidney deficiency is inevitable in everyone's life. Therefore, I told you earlier that I hope you never experience kidney deficiency, but this is impossible. As we age, our organs gradually weaken. If we live to be over a hundred and have kidney deficiency, that's fine. The more serious problem now is that many people are prematurely aging, and many others are not only prematurely aging but also dying young. These serious problems are all related to kidney deficiency.
