How to determine if you have kidney deficiency? (Next)

How can we detect subtle signs of kidney deficiency? Let's discuss them one by one.
1. A persistent salty taste in the mouth indicates kidney deficiency.
In nephrology clinics, we often hear the question, "Why does my mouth always taste salty?" If your mouth primarily tastes salty, this is a sign of kidney deficiency. Why do people with kidney deficiency have a salty taste? This is because our five flavors (sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, and salty) correspond to our internal organs, and the flavor corresponding to the kidneys is salty. Why is there such a close relationship between the kidneys and salty taste? Because the kidneys belong to the water element (metal, wood, water, fire, earth) in the Five Elements theory, and salty taste also belongs to the water element. There's an old Chinese saying, "Things of a kind come together, and people are grouped by their kind." This grouping method is based on the Five Elements theory, which groups the kidneys (one of the five internal organs) and salty taste together. Therefore, pay attention: if you find your mouth always tastes salty, it's a sign of kidney deficiency, and you should see a doctor.
2. Unexplained fear indicates kidney deficiency.
Some patients experience unexplained fear and anxiety, which is related to kidney deficiency. Because fear pertains to the emotions related to the kidneys, and fear without cause indicates kidney deficiency and insufficient kidney qi. We previously discussed essence, qi, and spirit. Where do our "qi" and "spirit" come from? They come from "essence." Where does "essence" come from? It comes from the kidneys. When kidney qi is weak, we experience fear. When we experience unexplained fear, we should pay attention, as it is a manifestation of kidney deficiency.
3. Dreaming of water is a sign of kidney deficiency
. Everyone dreams, some even daily. However, if your dreams are frequently related to water, such as a capsized boat or sinking into the water, this is also a sign of kidney deficiency.
4. Feeling cold is a sign of kidney deficiency .
Some people are very sensitive to cold, always feeling cold while others feel hot. They need to wear extra clothes in summer. This sensitivity to cold is also a sign of kidney deficiency. The kidneys are the foundation of innate constitution, storing essence, including yang qi and yin essence. Yang energy originates from the kidneys. If the kidneys are deficient, the body's primordial yang energy is weak, and when yang energy is insufficient, we feel cold. Therefore, people who constantly feel cold are definitely suffering from kidney deficiency.
5. Frequent yawning despite not lacking sleep indicates
kidney deficiency. Some people yawn all day long, which is a kidney issue. The kidneys govern yawning. If you haven't slept for several days and are exhausted, you'll yawn because of the lack of sleep and physical fatigue. Of course, yawning is also a physical issue. If you yawn all day long without staying up late, it's definitely related to kidney deficiency.
6. Frequent sneezing indicates kidney deficiency
. Clinically, many people say they have allergic rhinitis, characterized by constant sneezing. They sneeze when the weather gets slightly cold, or sometimes they sneeze constantly for no apparent reason. This is also a manifestation of kidney deficiency. For people with allergic rhinitis, the root problem is kidney deficiency. If you sneeze frequently, you should see a doctor to tonify your kidneys.
7. Heel pain indicates kidney deficiency.
Some people experience heel pain, which is a typical symptom of kidney deficiency. Clinically, if someone complains of persistent heel pain, it's natural to need kidney tonification. Why is heel pain related to the kidneys? Because our kidney meridian starts from the sole of the foot.
As mentioned earlier, the kidneys govern the bones, and the heel bone is the most stressed part of the body, bearing all our weight. Therefore, if you have kidney deficiency, insufficient kidney qi, and your bones are not strong enough, and this area bears the most weight, it's prone to injury and pain. Poor meridian flow can also cause pain. If you have heel pain, it's definitely a sign of kidney deficiency. 8. Dark
, dull complexion indicates kidney deficiency.
Some people have a dark, dull complexion, which is definitely a sign of kidney deficiency (except for Black people). If you are of Asian descent and your complexion is very dark and dull, it's definitely a sign of kidney deficiency. Some people used to have a good complexion, but now it's getting darker; this should also be noted, as it indicates a slight deficiency of kidney qi. Everyone knows from experience, especially women, that if you don't sleep for a few days, you'll immediately develop dark circles under your eyes. Dark circles are a sign of kidney deficiency, so please don't stay up late; staying up late is extremely harmful to your health.
Older people develop age spots, which are pigment deposits that darken the skin. If young people develop age spots, it indicates kidney deficiency. Increasingly dark skin is a characteristic symptom of kidney deficiency.
9. Frequent groaning without illness is a sign of kidney deficiency .
If someone is constantly groaning, which we often call "groaning without illness," it's a sign of kidney deficiency. I remember seeing many women in the countryside who felt comfortable groaning, which is actually a sign of kidney deficiency. Traditional Chinese medicine categorizes common human sounds into five types: "exhalation, laughter, singing, crying, and groaning," each corresponding to one of the five internal organs: liver exhalation, heart laughter, spleen singing, lung crying, and kidney groaning. Therefore, groaning is not a sign of kidney deficiency. Now, let's correct this: it's not groaning without illness, but groaning is a symptom of kidney deficiency.
10. A low, deep voice indicates kidney deficiency.
Ancient Chinese music classifies sounds into five tones: Gong, Shang, Jiao, Zheng, and Yu. The phrase "tone deficiency" often refers to this. What does Yu mean? It describes a low, deep voice that starts high and gradually decreases in pitch. If someone's voice is low and gradually fades, becoming inaudible, it's a sign of kidney deficiency, requiring kidney tonification.
11. Unexplained trembling indicates kidney deficiency .
Many people experience unexplained trembling. This trembling, along with the previously mentioned fear and aversion to cold, is a manifestation of kidney deficiency. People with kidney deficiency are more prone to fear, and fearful people tremble. Those who are sensitive to cold also tremble. Everyone experiences trembling when extremely cold. Therefore, if you frequently experience unexplained trembling, it could be a sign of kidney deficiency.
12. Increased or Decreased Saliva Reflects Kidney Deficiency
There are two types of saliva: clear saliva is called "xian," and thick saliva is called "tuo." If it's clear xian, it indicates a spleen problem; if it's thick tuo, it indicates a kidney problem. Excessive and thick saliva is a sign of kidney yang deficiency. Conversely, if a patient constantly feels dryness in their mouth and has difficulty speaking, it's because they have insufficient saliva, a sign of kidney deficiency. Our normal oral cavity is nourished by the spleen, stomach, and kidneys. The tongue's ability to taste, move flexibly, and express ourselves fluently is due to the nourishment of kidney essence and spleen. Therefore, the amount of saliva reflects kidney problems.
13. A Putrid Body Odor Indicates Kidney Deficiency
Furthermore, body odor can also reflect kidney deficiency. If you recently notice an unusual putrid odor, it's a bad sign! This person definitely has kidney deficiency. Why? The putrid smell is associated with the kidneys; the "putrid" smell in the five olfactory categories (smell, burnt, fragrant, fishy, putrid) is the smell of the kidneys. If you visit my clinic, you'll notice that uremia patients smell bad. A putrid odor indicates severe kidney disease.
14. Dry, withered ears indicate kidney deficiency
. The earlobes reflect kidney qi and kidney weakness. Dry, withered ears usually indicate kidney problems. People with kidney failure have shriveled, dark-colored ears, followed by dryness; this is a typical sign of kidney deficiency.
15. Loose, yellowish teeth indicate kidney deficiency .
The following symptom is relatively easy to understand. If you always have problems with your teeth—loose, yellowed, or missing—it definitely indicates a kidney problem. Why are teeth related to the kidneys? We mentioned earlier that the kidneys govern the bones, and bones are governed by the kidneys. Teeth are considered an extension of the bones; teeth grow where there is more bone, reflecting the kidneys. Often, when I see a patient, I don't even need to ask them anything; just by looking at their mouth, I know, oh no, this person definitely has a kidney problem.
16. Illness in winter indicates kidney deficiency .
A couple of years ago, I went to Hainan for the Spring Festival and met a taxi driver from Harbin. He used to have a good job in Harbin, but he couldn't stay there because he couldn't breathe properly in the winter, so he had no choice but to go to Hainan to drive a taxi. If you feel unwell or uncomfortable in winter, it's definitely related to kidney deficiency. Traditional Chinese medicine prescribes a formula. What does this formula refer to? Why is it called a formula? Actually, this formula refers to directions: east, west, south, north, and center. Different directions are associated with different climates and environments. What direction corresponds to winter? The north is the most affected region, and winter in the north is characterized by cold. Summer in the south corresponds to winter, and summer in the south is characterized by warmth. If you can't stand being in the north, I'll give you a direction, point you to the south, and your illness will be cured. Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes treating cold, heat, warmth, and coolness; all diseases involve cold and heat. For patients with cold symptoms, a warming prescription will suffice. However, consider this: we need conditions. It's impossible to prescribe everyone to go to the south, or for all southerners to go to the north. Not everyone can do that. Traditional Chinese medicine uses different herbs to create an artificial environment. For example, for illnesses caused by the cold north, we create a warm southern climate. Therefore, any illness that worsens or develops in winter is a manifestation of kidney deficiency, and is related to this. Any illness that worsens in the north is also related to kidney deficiency.
17. At what age do men and women begin to experience kidney deficiency? Fatigue = Aging; Aging = Kidney Deficiency
.
The following tells you the age structure of kidney deficiency. For women, the age of 35 marks a turning point as their kidney energy begins to decline. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), women should consider taking kidney-tonifying medications after age 35. Similarly, men around 40 years old also experience a decline in physical health and should consider kidney tonification for better overall health.
18. Constant Fatigue Indicates Kidney
Deficiency Finally, let me address a common complaint: "I'm so busy, I'm so tired!" What is the problem with this fatigue? Fatigue is actually a symptom of aging. Think about it: do normal people feel tired? No. The kind of fatigue we're talking about isn't the kind that can be relieved by resting after a long day of work. The fatigue we experience now is persistent, unrelieved, and inexplicable fatigue; the feeling of constant tiredness can last for many years. Since the 1980s, a condition called "chronic fatigue syndrome," now also known as "sub-health," has become prevalent. What are its characteristics? Feeling tired even after sleeping, or even more tired after sleeping, accompanied by a decline in many functions such as poor memory and a very low immune system, is a typical sign of kidney deficiency. Therefore, I want to tell you that fatigue is essentially aging, and aging is essentially kidney deficiency; they are equivalent. Fatigue equals aging, and aging equals kidney deficiency. The correct way to combat fatigue is to nourish the kidneys.
This is how I've introduced how to detect the subtle signs of kidney deficiency. Of course, there are also some very obvious problems. Some people say they have lower back pain, while others say they have decreased vision, hearing, memory, or sexual function. These are all symptoms of kidney deficiency. Only when we discover these problems can we consider nourishing the kidneys and seeking medical help.
Older people often feel weakness in their lower back and knees, and many suspect they have kidney deficiency. In fact, kidney deficiency, as a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is divided into many types. The most common are kidney yin deficiency and kidney yang deficiency. Symptoms of kidney yang deficiency include lower back pain, cold limbs, aversion to cold, and even edema; symptoms of kidney yin deficiency include "heat," mainly lower back pain, hot flashes, night sweats, spontaneous sweating, and dizziness. Long-term kidney qi deficiency and kidney essence weakness can also cause discomfort in other parts of the body, which can be observed in some details.
Frequent yawning and lack of energy: The kidneys are the foundation of innate essence, and the essence stored in the kidneys is the original driving force of human life activities. Sufficient kidney essence results in abundant energy and physical strength; if kidney essence is insufficient, the spirit and body will not receive adequate nourishment, leading to fatigue and frequent yawning.
Hearing loss, tinnitus, and irritability: In traditional Chinese medicine theory, the five sensory organs (eyes, tongue, mouth, nose, and ears) correspond to the five internal organs (liver, heart, spleen, lungs, and kidneys). The auditory function of the ears is closely related to the strength of kidney qi; good kidneys mean good hearing. Conversely, when symptoms such as tinnitus, irritability, and hearing loss occur, kidney yin deficiency should be considered.
Loose teeth. The kidneys govern the bones, and bones rely on kidney essence for nourishment; healthy kidneys mean healthy bones. Teeth are considered an extension of the bones, and the condition of the bones directly affects the quality of the teeth. Therefore, the kidneys and teeth are closely related. Kidney deficiency leads to insufficient nourishment of the bones, resulting in weak teeth and loose teeth. Both kidney yin deficiency and kidney qi deficiency can cause loose teeth.
Hair loss or premature graying. From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, "hair is the manifestation of kidney essence; observing hair color reveals kidney qi." Insufficient kidney qi or excessive thinking can affect hair. Normally, gray hair appears after age 40 because as we age, kidney essence gradually declines, failing to nourish the hair, causing it to turn white. This is a natural phenomenon and requires no treatment. However, if hair suddenly turns white within a short period, it is often due to a disorder of the body's qi flow, requiring treatment targeting the underlying cause.
Lower back discomfort. The lower back is the "residence" of the kidneys. When kidney essence is insufficient, the residence is not adequately nourished, leading to lower back pain and other symptoms that should be taken seriously.
Decreased memory, becoming forgetful. Kidney essence nourishes both bones and the brain. Frequent forgetfulness indicates insufficient kidney essence, bone marrow depletion, and potential dental problems.
When managing kidney deficiency, it's crucial to first identify the underlying cause to address the symptoms. Common causes of kidney deficiency include: congenital insufficiency; emotional imbalance, mood swings, and excessive emotional activity; overexertion through sexual activity; prolonged illness damaging the kidneys; and old age and physical decline. Besides addressing the underlying cause, kidney tonification should be based on syndrome differentiation, first determining whether it's kidney yang deficiency or kidney yin deficiency. Yang deficiency requires tonifying yang, and yin deficiency requires nourishing yin; otherwise, the effect may be counterproductive.
