Zhaohai acupoint – a wonderful acupoint for strengthening the kidneys and reducing internal heat, helping you say goodbye to sore throat and insomnia.

I have a friend who sings Peking Opera. One night, he called me late at night. His voice was dry and hoarse, and he said apologetically, "Dr. Wu, my throat hurts so badly I can't stand it. If I didn't have a performance tomorrow, I wouldn't be calling so late. Do you have any good ideas to help me?"
I briefly asked him about the onset of his sore throat, mainly whether it was dry. He told me it was dry and painful. He also said he had caught a chill a couple of days ago, and suddenly his throat felt uncomfortable, swollen, and his voice became hoarse, making it difficult to speak.
After listening to his description, I had him sit on the bed with the soles of his feet aligned. I told him there was a small indentation below his inner ankle, and to press down firmly. I mysteriously told him to keep his mouth closed and not speak while pressing, and to swallow the saliva that appeared, otherwise it wouldn't work. I told him to let me know in ten minutes if it was effective. A little while later
, he called back, happily saying, "Your trick really worked! My throat is still a little swollen, but it doesn't hurt anymore. Thank you so much!" After the performance, he came to thank me. Given the nature of his work, which requires frequent use of his voice, I suggested that before each performance or after a late-night show, if he felt discomfort in his throat, he should massage the Zhaohai acupoint to prevent and treat dryness and soreness. I also prescribed a small remedy for him: drink 10g of Dendrobium nobile steeped in water daily, and with consistent use, his throat would remain healthy.
Why does massaging the Zhaohai acupoint have such a good effect on a sore throat? Because the Zhaohai acupoint belongs to the Yin Qiao meridian in the Eight Extraordinary Meridians, intersecting with the Kidney Meridian of Foot Shaoyin. It is one of the key acupoints where the Eight Extraordinary Meridians intersect, possessing the functions of nourishing the kidneys, clearing heat, and regulating the Triple Burner, thus both tonifying and clearing heat. Massaging this one acupoint can regulate both the Yin Qiao meridian and the Kidney meridian, a truly ingenious method. Sun Simiao, in his *Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold*, called this acupoint "Lou Yin," meaning that if this acupoint is problematic, the body's kidney water decreases, leading to kidney yin deficiency and causing upward rising of deficiency fire. Symptoms such as chest tightness, dry and sore throat, chronic pharyngitis, and hoarseness all fall within the treatment scope of this acupoint. Therefore, massaging this acupoint often yields immediate results.
Here's a little tip to help you better utilize the Zhaohai acupoint for health maintenance: when massaging this acupoint, keep your mouth closed and don't speak. When you feel saliva appear in your mouth, be sure to swallow it. Generally, after massaging for three to five minutes, you will feel saliva appear in your throat, and the pain will immediately subside. Ancient practitioners emphasized refining saliva into essence; when more saliva is generated, the body's kidney essence naturally becomes abundant, objectively playing a role in nourishing yin and strengthening the kidneys, truly mobilizing the body's great medicine. Keeping your mouth closed and not speaking is not mysterious; it's simply to make it easier for the generated saliva to moisten the throat, which is what the ancients called the saliva-swallowing method. The Yinqiao meridian governs the body's fluids, which converge at the Zhaohai acupoint. This point nourishes the kidneys, clears heat, and regulates the three jiaos (upper, middle, and lower burners). Therefore, massaging the Zhaohai acupoint stimulates kidney essence, drawing fluids upwards to moisten the throat. As the kidney water nourishes the throat, the excess heat descends, naturally relieving the sore throat. However, if the inflammation is severe and ulcerated, it's crucial to seek medical attention promptly to avoid delaying treatment.
In later clinical practice, I discovered that massaging the Zhaohai acupoint not only treats dry, sore throats but also frozen shoulder. A woman in her fifties, recently retired, was looking forward to a good rest. However, less than two months into her retirement, she suddenly experienced severe shoulder pain. A check-up revealed frozen shoulder. In addition to standard treatment, I provided her with a supplementary tip for treating and preventing frozen shoulder: Sit on the bed with knees bent and feet flat on the bed surface. Use your thumbs to massage the Zhaohai acupoints below the inner ankles on both sides for two to three minutes, applying pressure until you feel a slight soreness and distension. Applying this acupoint once or three times daily for a period of time will yield excellent results. Unexpectedly, this woman came to my clinic a week later, excitedly telling me that not only was her frozen shoulder cured, but her years-long insomnia was also gone—it was amazing! This inspired me, and I intentionally or unintentionally used this acupoint in my clinical practice to treat some patients with persistent insomnia, achieving unexpected results.
Later, I modified the method and suggested that friends troubled by insomnia massage the Zhaohai acupoint for a few minutes before bed. This not only nourishes Yin and reduces fire, tonifies the kidneys and replenishes Qi, but also helps you sleep comfortably—why not?
I myself suffer from chronic pharyngitis, and when taking medication, I often cough at night, and my throat is particularly dry. This time, I found a traditional Chinese medicine massage method to treat my chronic pharyngitis.
