Supplement to spinal pinching

After the article about pinching and kneading was published, everyone was very interested and raised many excellent questions. This article will provide a general answer.
First, let's discuss the technique and direction of pinching and kneading. As everyone knows, the back is a very important part of the body and a vital channel for the flow of Yang energy. Gently manipulating the back, even just reaching behind to scratch, pinch, pat, or lightly bump it against a wall, is beneficial to health. Pinching the back, including the skin and flesh, is even more effective. Ordinary "pinching" of the spine won't cause damage regardless of the direction, except for those with high blood pressure who must pinch from top to bottom. However, to maximize the health benefits of the back, we need to use the "pinching and kneading" method, which involves pinching the skin and flesh and twisting it in one direction, pinching three times and lifting once. Because this technique involves stimulating the flow of Qi and blood at a deeper level, the direction is extremely important: children under seven years old can only be pinched from bottom to top; those over seven, including adults, must be pinched from top to bottom. This is a rule passed down by our predecessors in Daoist medicine, and it cannot be violated.
When I first started practicing pinching, I was also confused about the direction, so I had a senior practitioner with excellent technique experiment on me, going against the rules and pinching from bottom to top. As a result, after only five pinches, I felt my forehead getting hot, my legs and feet getting cold and weak, and it took me a long time to recover. Afterwards, I was sweating bullets! Luckily, I have a good constitution; if someone with a poor constitution or a patient had been pinched, I don't know what would have happened! What our predecessors passed down to us is absolutely true!
Why must seven years old be used as a dividing point? In fact, seven years old is also a dividing point in human growth and development. In the hands of experienced pediatricians of traditional Chinese medicine, the diagnosis and treatment methods for illnesses before the age of seven and those after seven are completely different. For children under seven, doctors diagnose illnesses by "pushing the three points on the index finger." However, after age seven, these three points disappear, and pulse diagnosis, like that for adults, becomes necessary. Before age seven, a child's health depends on their innate foundation—the kidneys—and the vital fire of the kidneys must rise and fill the whole body. However, because the five internal organs and physical constitution of children are not yet fully developed, their vital energy is often insufficient, and yang energy cannot reach the upper body. Most childhood illnesses are caused by this inability to raise yang energy. Since it cannot reach the upper body, it needs to be artificially lifted. Therefore, pinching should be done from bottom to top to open up the stagnant qi and blood in the spine, allowing yang energy to rise naturally.
After age seven, the direction of qi in the body changes. The acquired foundation—the spleen and stomach—becomes stronger, and yang energy fills the upper body and needs to descend. However, due to the obstruction of the spine, it often cannot descend. Hypertension patients are the most typical and extreme example. Their Yang energy cannot descend, accumulating in the upper body, even rushing upwards to the head, causing excessive dissipation and even symptoms like palpitations and dizziness. Furthermore, the saying "old age begins in the legs" is also due to the inability of Yang energy to descend, leading to the stagnation of Yin and cold pathogens in the lower body. Therefore, pinching the affected area must be done from top to bottom. This not only removes stagnation but also allows Yang energy to flow smoothly downwards, achieving harmony between the upper and lower body, thus alleviating many chronic diseases.
Experienced pinchers will feel different sensations under their fingers when encountering obstruction points; they may feel a hard lump or the skin and flesh may feel exceptionally soft but difficult to pinch. In this case, you must pull upwards with force, and you may hear a "pop" sound.
You can pinch the acupoints at any time of day, without being too strict about the timing. As for the number of times, five times is generally advisable. If you feel comfortable and really want to pinch again, then pinching three to five more times is fine. Develop a good habit of pinching the acupoints regularly, and you will be pleasantly surprised in the long run.
