A woman was found dead naked in a pond several days later and was mistaken for a baby.

The body of an unidentified naked woman had been submerged in a pond for days without anyone noticing. Villagers explained that they mistook it for a doll or a mannequin from a clothing store, as such items had been thrown into the pond before. The incident occurred in a pond near Beishan Kindergarten in Beishan Village, Guanzhou Street, Haizhu District. Police retrieved the body on Sunday. Police stated that a forensic examination revealed no external injuries and no suspicious circumstances. The preliminary determination is drowning. The family reported a history of mental illness.
A reporter from Southern Metropolis Daily visited the scene yesterday and found a chest-high railing around the pond, ensuring that even an adult standing on the edge wouldn't fall in. The pond was stagnant and filled with various kinds of garbage. Villagers indicated that the water in the pond did not circulate.
When discussing the floating body with villagers, many immediately realized, "The police retrieved it yesterday"—but the body wasn't discovered on Sunday. Some villagers had noticed something unusual in the water as early as last Thursday or Friday when they came to the pond to dry their quilts. Why didn't anyone report it?
“Head down, shoulders and above were above water, lower body was still in the water. We all thought it wasn’t a corpse,” explained Ms. Cheng, who runs a snack shop by the pond, answering the reporter’s questions. People often threw dolls or clothing store mannequins into the pond, and many villagers were used to it. They never expected it to be a real “boy who cried wolf.” Ms. Cheng first saw the naked body last Saturday, mistaking it for a doll or a clothing store mannequin, so she ignored it.
Until around 1 pm on Sunday, a stranger from outside the village came to the pond in front of Ms. Cheng’s shop to sunbathe and happened to find the naked body right under his nose. “He asked me what happened, I didn’t know, so he called the police,” Ms. Cheng said. Within 10 minutes, the police arrived at the scene, confirmed it was a floating body, and began the retrieval process. Because the police cordoned off the area after the body was retrieved, Ms. Cheng did not see the body. Other villagers said the body was that of a woman in her twenties.
