Coming-of-age ceremony on the Mongolian grasslands

As a senior reporter for the People's Daily, I received orders during a work meeting to travel to Inner Mongolia to investigate the customs and traditions of the local ethnic groups. On the plane to Hohhot, I fell into deep thought; how to conduct the investigation in this vast grassland was indeed a headache. Fortunately, the unique exoticism of the Mongolian grasslands immediately helped me forget my work worries.
Blue skies and white clouds, green fields and red flowers, flocks of sheep, the aroma of milk wafting through the air—the thousands of miles of northern grasslands, the boundless Gobi Desert—this is the cradle of nomadic culture, the birthplace of Mongolian culture. It is full of alluring charm, rich in mystery, and steeped in ancient legends. From the Yinshan rock paintings to the Turkic stone figures, from the land of dinosaurs to the Hongshan Culture, from the Yuan Dynasty's Shangdu to Genghis Khan's mausoleum, from grassland sightseeing to hot springs, whether it's the milk tea in the yurt or the shepherd's song, whether it's horseback riding or the melody of the morin khuur (horsehead fiddle), all are experiences of nomadic life.
But these are the Mongolian cultures that are best known to most people. As one of the most influential news media outlets in the country, repeatedly reporting on these well-known old Yellow Pages might seem perfunctory. This time, the editor-in-chief's requirement was to uncover new, unusual, and little-known materials! This was precisely what gave me the biggest headache. Exploring the mysterious side of the Mongolian grasslands was indeed no easy task. First, I was completely ignorant about Mongolian culture; my understanding of it was limited to a short introduction in a Mongolian tourist brochure. It seemed the first priority was to find a capable local guide!

She said that tomorrow was the third day of the Genghis Khan memorial ceremony, the last and most important day of the ceremony. Tomorrow will be the annual coming-of-age ceremony of the Lali people, also known as the Chagan Suluk Festival. Every Lali boy who turns fifteen must participate in the ceremony on that day to become an "adult." What excites me even more is that this ceremony is unique to the Lali people, and they still retain the complete sacrificial ritual. It contains many activities that are unimaginable in modern society. It is truly something to look forward to. But what Nawa said next was like a bucket of cold water poured over my head. My heart sank instantly.
"But outsiders are not allowed to watch the Lali people's coming-of-age ceremony."

Nawa laughed, that hearty laugh again. "That's to welcome you!"
Wow, that really startled me. Just then, the elder walked towards me and, unusually, hugged me. I was caught off guard by this sudden action and momentarily at a loss, afraid of doing something wrong. Then the elder spoke, and based on the child's translation, I understood the general meaning.
"Today, on this great day, we welcome our distinguished guest. This is the first time the Lali people have accepted an outsider to participate in our sacrificial ceremony. For so many years, the Lali people have lived a secluded life, isolated from the world, and remain unknown to the world. (V) Unbelievable.
Upon entering the yurt, a strong, unpleasant odor wafted towards me (the smell of mutton). The yurt was warm inside, made of animal hides. The slightly reddish hides, illuminated by a few oil lamps, filled the room with a mysterious atmosphere. The floor was carpeted with sheepskin, very soft to sit on. "Fellow tribesmen, today is a great day, a sacred day for our children to become men. Our great ancestor Genghis Khan will forever protect them, and his boundless power will help them become true eagles of the grasslands!" The elder's voice was powerful and weathered, resonating deeply.
"How many boys are participating in the coming-of-age ceremony today?" I asked, puzzled, since I hadn't seen the children yet.
"My father said five. They're all fifteen," the boy replied.
"Could you briefly explain the ceremony?" I asked impatiently before it even began.

Several ceremonial officials, their faces veiled with black gauze, then offered each boy a cup of sheep's milk wine. After the children accepted the wine, the elder spoke.
"The grasslands nurtured you, the grasslands raised you, the grasslands are your stage to achieve great things. You, like the great leader Genghis Khan, roamed the same grasslands, the same blood flowing in your veins! Children, fulfill your mission like Genghis Khan!"
With that, the five children raised their cups and drank them down. Just then, the yurt's curtain was opened again. Five women, seemingly middle-aged, entered, also barefoot and wearing large robes. This puzzled me greatly.
"Who are they?" I asked eagerly.
"They are all the children's mothers. They are also participants in this ceremony," Nawa said.
