Gently I leave,
just as gently I came;
gently I wave
goodbye to the clouds of the western sky.

The golden willows by the riverbank
are like brides in the sunset;
their vibrant reflections in the shimmering water
ripple in my heart.

The green duckweed on the soft mud
sways gently in the water;
in the gentle waves of the Cam,
I am willing to be a waterweed!

That pool under the elm shade
is not a clear spring,
but a rainbow from the sky;
crushed among the floating algae,
it settles like a rainbow-colored dream.

Seeking a dream? I'll pole a long boat,
drifting towards where the grass is greener;
a boat laden with starlight,
singing in the shimmering starlight.

But I cannot sing,
for silence is the farewell flute;
even the summer insects are silent for me,
silence is the Cambridge of tonight!

Gently I leave,
just as gently I came;
I wave my sleeves,
not taking away a single cloud.
