How many women did the amorous literary giant Goethe have in his lifetime?

Goethe spent his life doing three things: writing, holding office, and having love affairs.
In fact, it was precisely his passionate love life and romantic emotions that enabled him to create literary masterpieces such as *Faust* and *The Sorrows of Young Werther*.
Although Goethe had only one wife and one child, he had intricate relationships with countless women.
Many of his 129 works are set against the backdrop of his love life, and he has 15 volumes of handwritten diaries available for reference. Zhou Guoping once said, "Without love, there would be no Goethe." According to media reports, in February 2008, the 80-year-old German writer Martin Walser published his new novel,
*Goethe in Love *, featuring the great writer Goethe as the protagonist. It recounts how, in 1823, at the age of 74, he attended a masquerade ball in Marienbad, a spa town, wearing a mask, and fell instantly in love with Ulrike, the 19-year-old eldest daughter of his landlady. Her large, captivating blue eyes sparkled with endless affection. "When he saw her, she had already captured his gaze." She often accompanied him on walks, supporting him like a daughter to her father, innocently sharing everything that came to mind. The old man and the young woman exchanged glances, and Goethe was utterly captivated, unable to extricate himself. As time passed, the passion of love surged within him, finally reaching an uncontrollable point. Upon hearing laughter on the tree-lined path, this septuagenarian acted like a young man experiencing his first love, immediately abandoning his work, without hat or cane, rushing down the steps to greet the lively and lovely girl, showering her with attention like a boy, a man. Fifteen years ago, he had admired her mother; a year ago, he had only addressed her with the affectionate tones of a father. But now, affection had suddenly transformed into lust, like a volcanic eruption of emotions. He first seduced her in every way, then launched a barrage of love letters, determined to marry the young woman. Unexpectedly, his son, consumed by jealousy, interfered, ruining the old poet's plans. Heartbroken, the poet returned to Weimar, where he remained melancholic until his death in 1832. Time flew by, and Ulrike, now an old woman, burned Goethe's love letters before her death, burying a peculiar love affair between grandmother and granddaughter. This twilight romance is not a fictional creation but largely based on reality. Ulrike von Levitso (1804-1899) was said to be both beautiful and talented, and in her youth, she had a close relationship with the elderly Goethe. Goethe considered marrying her and wrote many love poems for her, the most famous being "Marienbad Elegy."
