Chapter 1 of "Shared Living":

My husband, Kang Jie, and I both graduated from university in 1989. Due to the student movement, job assignments were poor that year, and we were no exception. We met through an introduction and got married in 1990. Our married life was very happy, but we were both restless people. In 1991, starting a business became fashionable, and going to Shenzhen was even more of a trend. We quickly found a place that was conveniently located near both of our workplaces, with reasonable rent, and it was a unit on the fourth floor of the top floor with a balcony. We arranged a time to go see the apartment, but when we arrived, we were stunned. There was only one room, similar to a standard hotel room, except for a tiny kitchen that was barely big enough for two people to turn around in.

How were two couples supposed to live here? We hesitated, but the rent and the convenience of commuting made it hard to give up. After discussing it, we reluctantly moved in, dividing the room in two with a T-shaped curtain, and creating a passageway outside. We agreed to have someone board up the partition when we had a little more money. But that was just an excuse; our real thought was to establish ourselves first and save up to rent a separate room.

Four people crammed into a room of less than 20 square meters was definitely inconvenient; people today can't imagine the difficulties we faced back then. Cooking, using the toilet, and showering were all extremely difficult. The apartment was small; the two beds were practically touching, making it difficult to even turn over in bed, let alone have any intimacy. We were newlyweds, and it was natural to have those urges and needs, but we were both highly educated and, while open-minded, it was still something we couldn't openly discuss. June in Shenzhen was unbearably hot, and there was no air conditioning, only two fans constantly blowing. Before long, our clothes were completely soaked. Drinking didn't feel particularly bad; the increased sweating actually felt refreshing.

Xiaowen and I were completely drenched in our clothes, the patterns on our bras clearly visible through our wet shirts—it was quite embarrassing. We went to the bathroom to change into T-shirts, and I even took off my bra. When I came out, I found she had taken it off too.
