Regarding quitting smoking and controlling weight, I'd like to share some personal experiences and discuss the gains and losses of smoking and weight.
Smokers, affectionately known as "smokers," are a common sight in China, from high-ranking officials to ordinary people. I believe smokers can be divided into three categories: First, the hardcore smoker, commonly called a "heavy smoker," who is never without a cigarette, especially after drinking, treating cigarettes like food; second, the moderate smoker, who smokes only when needed and has some self-control but cannot quit completely; and third, the "master" smoker, who "only smokes and doesn't go near cigarettes," only doing so in specific situations—this type should not be underestimated.
I've tried to quit countless times, usually for a day or two, a week or two, sometimes even a month or two. Each time, I couldn't bear the excruciating feeling and relapsed. As long as you have friends who smoke, being in that circle makes quitting very difficult. A few years ago, I tried to quit smoking. Just when I thought I had successfully quit, I saw a very novel thing: hookah. Seeing people puffing away at it fascinated me. I thought these were fruit-based cigarettes with little nicotine and wouldn't be addictive, so I bought one to try. I started with a small hookah, but the smoke wasn't enough, so I bought a larger one, and slowly I started to enjoy it. I kept it in my shop, and passersby, seeing the swirling smoke and the lampstand-like thing with pipes sticking out, thought we were eating "pork." That's how I got hooked again, and I still rely on cigarettes when I'm out.
I quit smoking in the latter half of 2017, and it's been three years now. That year, I was planning to have a child, and I also had a sore throat and a persistent cough, even coughing up blood, which panicked me, so I decided to quit smoking. Seeing this, my friend said, "Want to make a bet? I bet 5000. If you can quit smoking in a month, I'll give you 5000. If you can't, you give it to me." For the first few days, I thought he was joking, but later he kept asking me if I wanted to bet, so I reluctantly agreed! I originally planned to wait until my cough cleared up before smoking again, but his provocation made me decide to quit altogether!
You can find ways to get through this period, but fundamentally, you need to restrain yourself from the bottom of your heart. As time goes by, your body will gradually recover. Think about it, if you can quit smoking, what else can't you do?
For the first week, I was still coughing and had chest pain, but I still wanted to smoke. I tried to shift my attention elsewhere, using work to numb myself. I had to find something to do, except sleep, and not stop. Once I stopped, I would want to smoke. It doesn't feel good to have a cigarette in your mouth, so I bought some strong-flavored snacks. I personally recommend mint gum or extra-strong mints; they also freshen your breath. Back then, I chewed two packs of gum and two packets of betel nut a day. God knows what I went through to quit smoking. I would chew gum until it lost its flavor, then keep stuffing it into my mouth, almost filling it to the point where I could blow bubbles all over my face. Chewing betel nut made my face hurt, I got mouth ulcers, bleeding gums, and I couldn't even eat properly.
The first week was the most painful. In the second week, I tried to stop chewing betel nut because my mouth hurt so much I couldn't even chew gum anymore. But to keep my mouth from stopping, I continued chewing gum. Two packs a day was a must. I chewed until I questioned my existence. But since I had made up my mind to quit, I couldn't give up halfway. Once, a friend invited me to karaoke, thinking they would get me drunk and offer me cigarettes, but they didn't succeed. After I fell asleep on the sofa, they lit a cigarette, put it between my fingers, and took a picture. By then, I could say I had quit smoking. I didn't even think about it anymore, and I knew that if I smoked another cigarette after such a long time, I would definitely feel nauseous.
In summary: Setting a goal for yourself is very important; ideally, you should have a calendar and check it off daily. Establish a mental barrier that you cannot cross. You must do it for a person or for a purpose, and do it responsibly, making yourself feel guilty if you fail. Don't stop chewing; chewing gum, mints, and betel nut are the best alternatives, but don't consume too much betel nut.
Once you successfully quit smoking, you'll be inhaling secondhand smoke instead! Haha! You'll start to hate the smell of smoke. If you have rhinitis, the smell will make you sneeze uncontrollably. You'll start to avoid friends who smoke and start to feel disgusted by your own smoking. Besides that... you'll also gain weight. Now let's talk about the good and bad things that quitting smoking brought to my body.
Benefits: My mental state improved; I no longer need cigarettes to stay awake, and I'm less prone to drowsiness. My face isn't as oily as before, I cough less, I have less phlegm, my immunity is much stronger, the chest tightness and shortness of breath I used to experience are gone, my teeth aren't yellow anymore, my breath doesn't smell bad, and my appetite has improved.
Disadvantages: To keep my mouth moving, even though chewing gum ads claim it's sugar-free, an industry insider told me it still contains sugar, calories, and energy, and will still lead to weight gain. Besides chewing gum, quitting smoking increases appetite and food intake; dinner is one or two times the usual amount. The rice bowl I use at home is as big as two hands, and I fill it to the brim! Everything on the table tastes delicious, and it would be wasteful to throw it away, so I force myself to eat it all, and I can finish it. This leads to overeating, stretching my stomach, and then it's time for late-night snacks. Before October last year, I had late-night snacks every night, sometimes with three or five friends for a nice meal, sometimes just a bowl of noodles with vegetables. I went from 140 pounds to over 180 pounds! Obesity
brings various physical discomforts: walking is tiring, climbing stairs makes me breathless, and even slight movement makes me sweat profusely—and that's the milder of it. My back aches, I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar, and now I have rheumatoid arthritis—it's so painful! I went to the hospital for a checkup, and the doctor said I needed to control my weight. Of course, I couldn't bear to lose that weight! All that money I spent on food
, and I can't just lose it all like that! ~o(╥﹏╥)o Now, back to the last topic: weight control. I can't help it. If I get any fatter, I won't even be able to see my penis when I pee, and I'll face all sorts of disdain, being labeled a fat person—nobody likes that. I've made up my mind: lose weight! I haven't gone to the gym. Several fitness instructors in my WeChat Moments are always trying to persuade me to go to the gym and buy their personal training sessions—it's pointless. I've always enjoyed working out; I have some home gym equipment, and I can exercise by myself. Why can't I just watch tutorials online and go to the gym? Wouldn't it be better to spend that money on a good bottle of wine? (I didn't drink before, but since quitting smoking, I've developed another hobby). Many of my friends who bought gym memberships were reselling them on social media. Ugh!
My main exercise was jump rope, plus some weight training and cardio, one set each morning and evening. I didn't dare run because of knee arthritis. During that time, I had this illusion that I'd become so disciplined... At first, I didn't diet, and after exercising, I felt I hadn't lost much weight, just become a little more toned. Then I started cutting out late-night snacks, reducing my food intake to a tiny bowl (I specifically switched to a very small bowl). Once I finished my meal, that was it; I wouldn't take more. I could eat some vegetables, but not too much oily food. Evenings were the most agonizing time. Whenever I reached that difficult crossroads, or smelled the enticing aroma of late-night food stalls, I would slap myself hard: "Fatso! Still eating!"
I switched from taking the bus to walking, from sitting to exercising, and controlled my food intake. It took me five months to go from 180 pounds to 150 pounds, and my physical condition improved significantly. Now, I just want to arrogantly say, I can quit smoking! I can control my weight too, what can't I do! If you also want to quit smoking, if you also want to lose weight, the most important thing is to have perseverance and stick to it. My advice is, you can quit smoking for someone very important to you, or for something very important; you must set a goal for yourself.
(Can you believe I was addicted to chewing gum? I only quit chewing gum three months ago; before that, I needed to chew gum every time I was working… I guess not chewing gum deserves half the credit for my successful weight loss.)
Never try e-cigarettes with wishful thinking. E-cigarettes are a false proposition; they only offer psychological comfort to smokers. They seem appealing, but they only treat the symptoms, not the root cause. E-cigarettes are like someone offering you a bouquet of roses with both hands—it looks like roses, but upon closer inspection, it's just a bloodstained skull. In this life, how can anyone be without flaws? Those who achieve wholeness through imperfection are truly respectable. May you become a man with a strong enough heart; within every man who quits smoking, there lies a nine-story pagoda.
