What do the genitals look like during sexual intercourse?

Have you ever wondered what the genitals look like during sexual intercourse?
In a 1933 painting, artist Emily Dickinson depicted the penis during mating as an "S" shape. However, in 1999, sexologist Willibord Weijmar Schultz and others published a magnetic resonance imaging study of the genitals in the top international medical journal *BMJ*, finding that the penis during mating is not actually "S-shaped."
Due to its provocative subject matter, the study remains popular to this day.
A BMJ blockbuster and one of the most popular studies in the last two decades, authored by Weijmar Schultz,
it explored the feasibility of photographing male and female genitals during intercourse and whether it validated previous speculations and hypotheses about sexual behavior.
The year after its publication, it won an Ig Nobel Prize (the Ig Nobel Prize recognizes achievements that elicit laughter and thought, stimulating interest in science, medicine, and technology). Even
amidst competition from numerous serious studies in *BMJ*, this paper consistently ranks high on the list of most downloaded papers.
It was an observational study that used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study female sexual responses and male and female genitalia during intercourse, conducting 13 experiments on 8 couples and 3 single women.
Scientists found that during intercourse in the missionary position (man on top), the male genitalia were neither completely straight nor the previously predicted S-shape, but rather exhibited a boomerang shape, with one-third of its length consisting of the base of the penis.
During female arousal without intercourse, the uterus rose and the anterior vaginal wall lengthened. The size of the uterus did not increase during arousal.

In conclusion, MRI of male and female genitalia during intercourse is feasible and helps in understanding human anatomy.
However, it was met with skepticism from some in the scientific community at the time. Some scholars argued that it was practically impossible to use the man-on-top position during intercourse in the 50cm wide space of an MRI machine, and that the male genitalia would not reach their normal length and volume.
Some said, "We need to see evidence of man-on-top intercourse," otherwise they would not accept the results.
The authors later responded that the MRI scanner used in the study was large-volume, providing ample space for the subjects to experiment. "You can try it too," reads
Leonardo da Vinci's painting "Mating." He inscribed on the painting, "I have revealed to men the first reason for their existence, and perhaps the second."

We can see from the painting that even a genius like Leonardo da Vinci distorted the male and female bodies to suit the ideas of his time and his colleagues.
Why is a precise understanding of the human body important?
At the end of the paper, Schultz et al. answer, "This research began with our curiosity about art and science."
They believe that only real MRI images can transcend cultural limitations and objectively demonstrate the anatomy of human sexual intercourse and the natural, authentic female sexual responses.
As the Polish-German physician and philosopher Ludwik Fleck (1896-1961) said, "In science, just as in art and in life, only what is true to culture is true to nature."
The acknowledgments section is also somewhat humorous. Let's translate it together for you:
We thank:
the volunteers for their cooperation, laughter, and for allowing us to publish their intimate MR images;
the hospital officials on duty who had the wisdom and courage to allow us to continue our research despite the media pressure;
Professor Kremer for encouraging the use of scanners to study female sexuality and for critically reading papers;
Professor Mali for encouraging the use of equipment at Utrecht University Hospital;
and P van Andel, who, to be honest, didn't actually want us to use MRI to study sexual intercourse.
