My Private Past with My Two Older Sisters (Part 38: The Finale)

I immediately told Li Meini the devastating news and sent her Su Ling's suicide note. She was sobbing uncontrollably on the phone. She asked when I was going to Shanghai, and I said I would book the earliest flight. She said she would come with me.

So, that night, my brother and I flew to Shanghai separately from Xiamen and Fuzhou, met at the airport, and went straight to the funeral home to meet our lawyer friend.

We didn't bring Bao'er because it was too sudden; we adults were already overwhelmed with grief, and how could we comfort and care for him? We also decided to keep the news from Su Ling's parents for the time being, and tell them after we brought Su Ling's ashes back to Xiamen.

The lawyer gave us Su Ling's death certificate, the original suicide note, the will documents, the cremation certificate, and other documents, and explained some things to us, including the time for the cremation the next day.

Li Meini and I thanked the lawyer repeatedly. He said we didn't need to thank him; he did all this for himself because three years ago, the old man's widow had Su Ling as her lawyer in a property lawsuit, and he had fallen in love with her ever since. But she only had one man in her heart, and that was me.

After the lawyer left, Li Meini and I stood before Su Ling's coffin. Neither of us could have imagined that our reunion would end in death, and we couldn't help but embrace and weep.

The next day, after Su Ling's cremation, we went to her residence to collect and process some of her belongings. During this process, we found a children's drawing by Bao'er, depicting four adults—one man and three women—with a child, titled "Dad, Mom, Aunt, Little Aunt, and Me." Looking at this drawing, Li Meini and I wept uncontrollably again, and Li Meini almost fainted in my arms.

That evening, we returned to Xiamen with Su Ling's urn, the drawing, and a keepsake for Bao'er.

Next was the issue of what to do with Su Junbao. I certainly couldn't abandon him; he was Su Ling's child left in this world, and he was my own flesh and blood.

As for Li Meiting's attitude, it was no longer important to me at this point. Because I decided to stay by Bao'er's side forever, I no longer expected her forgiveness; I owed her a debt I could never repay.

When my father found out, he was furious, beat me, and resolutely refused to acknowledge this illegitimate grandson. Even though he was too ashamed to ask the Li family and Li Meiting for forgiveness,

he also forbade me from inheriting Su Ling's estate. He said that although our family wasn't wealthy, we were comfortably well-off and wouldn't have to rely on handouts. I said I didn't want the inheritance; it could all go to Su Ling's parents, but I couldn't disown the child.

My father and I were now at odds. My mother was soft-hearted and wanted to acknowledge Bao'er, but she didn't want to go against my father's wishes and was also concerned about the Li family's reputation; she cried and cried.

That day, Li's father and godmother came to my house, along with Li Meini and Brother Tang.

As soon as my father saw them, he told me to kneel down. I willingly knelt before Li's father and godmother, and no matter how they pulled or dragged me, I wouldn't get up. Just like I told Su Ling, it wasn't to ask for forgiveness, but only to apologize. In the end, Tom Cruise forcibly picked me up; he's always lifting weights at the gym, he's incredibly strong, and I couldn't resist him.

My dad said to Li's dad, "Old Li, I'm sorry, our family doesn't deserve such a good daughter-in-law as Tingting."

To our surprise, Li's dad and godmother were very tolerant and generous. They believed that my affair with Su Ling predated my affair with Li Meiting, and that Bao'er was too pitiful. They persuaded my dad instead, stating that the child's existence wouldn't affect the relationship between the two families, including my engagement with Li Meiting.

Li's dad even said to my dad, "Yuhao didn't abandon his old love's child to please his new love. Don't you think he acted with integrity and loyalty?"

But my dad disagreed, saying I wasn't good enough for Tingting. I know he felt sorry for the Li family, sorry for his beloved future daughter-in-law, and that he had no reason to pursue this marriage again. Li's dad was furious,

yelling, "You old bastard, why are you so stubborn? I really want to slap you!" No matter what he said, my dad remained seated on the sofa, silently smoking.

At this stalemate, Li Meiting, who hadn't shown up for some time, arrived at our house. She had clearly just come from the airport, still wearing her flight attendant uniform. My parents and I were utterly astonished. My dad and I glanced at her and then lowered our heads, unable to face her.

Li Meiting went straight to my dad, knelt down, took his hand, and uttered a single word, "Dad!" The three of us stared at her in shock.

She pleaded with my dad to acknowledge Bao'er, and in front of both families, she stated that if I agreed, she would be Bao'er's mother.

Su Ling's death made her realize that Su Ling's visit to me wasn't to take me back, but to say a final goodbye, allowing me and Bao'er to meet as father and son without recognizing each other.

After saying this, Li Meiting looked at me with tears in her eyes and said, "Brother, do you still want me?"

Her love and understanding moved everyone in both the Shen and Li families. My dad could no longer control his emotions, embracing his future daughter-in-law and weeping uncontrollably.

Li Meini, my mother, and my godmother were all wiping away tears. Even Tom Cruise, a tall man over six feet, couldn't help but shed tears.

As the main character in this whole affair, you can imagine how I felt. I pulled Li Meiting from my father's arms and hugged her tightly, saying thank you while tears streamed down my face. Li Meini also came over and hugged us both; the three of us siblings cried together.

After wiping away his tears for a while, my father pulled me away from Li Meini and her sister, pointed at me, and said to Li's father and godmother, "If this boy ever does anything to wrong Tingting again, even if God forgives him, I will never forgive him."

The matter was thus resolved satisfactorily. Afterwards, I went through the inheritance procedures with Su Ling's parents. Su Ling had owned four properties in Xiamen, including a storefront, and an apartment in Shanghai. Including her savings, her assets were divided into three parts: mine, Bao'er's, and her parents'.

I then went to Shanghai to handle the property transfer and entrusted the apartment to a local real estate agency for rental.

Back in Xiamen, Su Ling's parents discussed with me their feelings. They weren't used to life in Xiamen, and now that their daughter was gone, they wanted to take Su Junbao back to their hometown in Jiangxi. To be honest, my parents and I were strongly against it. After all, Xiamen was far better than that small county in Jiangxi, and Bao'er should stay there.

But considering that Su Ling's parents had lost both their children and only had this grandson left, we couldn't bear to separate them, so we agreed.

A day before Su Ling's parents left, the Shen and Li families gathered at my and Li Meiting's house for a farewell party. My dad and Li's dad were a few years younger than Su Ling's parents, and they addressed them as "elder brother" and "elder sister-in-law," saying that from now on, everyone would be family and that they should visit each other often.

Su Ling's parents were honest people who hadn't seen much of the world, so they were naturally very touched to see my dad and Li's dad, who were so sophisticated.

Bao'er and Little Tang were running around the house. The two brothers were already very familiar with each other. My mom was putting dishes on the table while telling them to slow down so they wouldn't fall or hurt themselves.

After a few rounds of drinks, Mr. Su raised his glass and said, "Su Ling never received warmth at home growing up. It's her good fortune to have met our family. That's why he decided to leave Bao'er in Xiamen. We're all good people, and Mr. and Mrs. Su feel comfortable entrusting Bao'er to us."

Mr. Su choked up a little as he said this, and looked at me, "Yuhao, from now on, every winter and summer vacation, will you send Bao'er back to our hometown for us?"

My eyes were filled with tears, and I stood up and said, "Uncle Su, we'll do as you say."

I noticed that my mother was crying again, and my father also turned his head and secretly wiped away his tears. He stood up, raised his glass to Mr. Su, and said, "Brother, from now on, Yuhao is also your and sister-in-law's son. Whenever there's anything big or small, Yuhao will take care of it for you. Come, let me toast you."

After Mr. Su and my father toasted each other, Mr. Su suggested changing Bao'er's surname to Shen. My father immediately refused, but Mr. Su was adamant. He said Bao'er was Yuhao's son and should take his father's surname, believing Su Ling in heaven would agree. With Mr. Li's persuasion, my father finally agreed and toasted Mr. Su again.

At this moment, Li Meini stood up, raised her glass, and said, "Uncle Su, Aunt Su, Su Ling is my best friend, my sister, and from now on, I'm your daughter too..."

She choked up, wiped away tears, and drank her wine. Mr. Su, holding his glass, was also in tears, "Good, good..."

Then he specifically toasted my mother and Li Meiting, saying he was entrusting Bao'er to them. My mother and Li Meiting quickly stood up and raised their glasses.

Next, Mr. Li and Brother Tang also toasted Mr. Su. During this meal, the Shen, Li, and Su families opened their hearts to each other; the scene was warm and touching. Suddenly,

I thought of Su Ling and quietly went to my bedroom, finding a photo of her in my phone's album. This is the only photo of her I have saved.

My thoughts drifted back to that moment years ago. She snatched my phone without a word and took a selfie. I asked her, annoyed, why take a selfie with someone else's phone? As she saved the photo, she said, how could a younger brother's phone not have a picture of his older sister? If I showed it to others and boasted that she was my girlfriend, she wouldn't mind. But if she found out I deleted it, I'd be dead.

At that moment, I heard laughter outside. Looking at the photo, recalling that moment, tears streamed down my face. Then, I felt the door behind me open slightly and close very gently. Without turning around, I knew it was my dearest sister, Li Meini.

I covered my mouth tightly, trying to hide my sobs from those outside…

Postscript:

On the first anniversary of Su Ling's death, my wife Li Meiting, Li Meini, Tom, Bao'er, and I went to Su Ling's grave to pay our respects.

The five of us stood before the tombstone for a long time. Li Meiting's hands remained on Bao'er's shoulders, and inside her belly was a little life over a month old.

Since becoming pregnant, Li Meiting had temporarily switched from flight attendant to ground staff. Our whole family hoped she would give birth to a daughter as beautiful as her, since we already had two sons, Bao'er and Little Tom.

In the photo on the tombstone, Su Ling still smiled radiantly, just as I had when I first met her.

Below the photo were the words "Tomb of Sister Su Ling," along with her birth and death dates—born June 15, 1988, died October 24, 2019. Her age was forever frozen at thirty-one, never to age again.

The inscription below read: brother Shen Yuhao, sisters Li Meini and Li Meiting. And below my name was engraved: son Shen Junbao.

Near the end of the memorial service, my father called, asking when we were coming home. Today happens to be the weekend. Since Li Meini, Tom Cruise, and Little Tom Cruise all came to Xiamen, and my mother came from Fuzhou to help me take care of the child after Bao'er stayed, this day became a gathering for both our families. My dad, Li's dad, and my godmother also drove over from Nanping this morning.

The whole family gathered at my and Li Meiting's house to make dumplings. As the saying goes, the deceased are gone, but the living should remain.

Under the setting sun, we walked towards the cemetery. Li Meini held Tom Cruise's arm, while Li Meiting and I each held Bao'er's hand.

"Daddy, Auntie, can Mommy see us from heaven?" Bao'er asked in her sweet voice.

"Of course she can! She'll always be watching over us, watching Bao'er grow up," I said, exchanging a smile with Li Meiting, who lovingly patted Bao'er's head.

The afterglow of the setting sun spilled across the sky and earth, and also onto us, as if Su Ling's gaze was falling from the heavens.
