Chapter Nine: A Charming Smile, Rare Birds Can Speak, Souls Depart, Goddesses Reveal True Form. It is said that Crown Prince Shao, leading the Eastern Palace guards, rushed to the capital, broke through the palace gates, stormed in, assassinated Emperor Yilong, and killed Xu Zhanzhi. Consort Pan was awakened from her sleep, barely getting out of bed when Crown Prince Shao burst in. Seeing the murderous intent and terrifying look on his face, Consort Pan knew his intentions were malicious. She immediately knelt and begged Shao to spare her life for the sake of Prince Shixing, Jun. Crown Prince Shao, by nature cruel and ruthless, remembered the resentful death of his mother, Empress Yuan, all caused by Consort Pan. Now, he was unwilling to let Consort Pan off easily, ignoring her desperate pleas. With a single stroke of his sword, Consort Pan's soul departed to join Emperor Yilong. At this time, Prince Jun of Shixing, having already received the news, rushed to the palace and asked Shao, "How did things go?" Shao grinned maliciously, "Everything is settled, except for your mother, Pan Shu..." Prince Shao hesitated, finding himself at a loss for words. Jun, however, said nonchalantly, "Could she be dead?" Prince Shao feigned sorrow, saying, "I was careless, and she was killed by the mutinous soldiers!" Jun calmly replied, "It's good that she's dead." Hearing this, Shao was delighted.
Immediately, Shao's faction supported him to ascend the throne, changing the era name to Taichu. As was customary, he lavishly rewarded meritorious officials and released Wang Yingwu from prison. He appointed Yan Daoyu as a divine tutor and placed him in the palace for patronage. After Wang Yingwu was released from prison, she bathed and perfumed herself, meticulously grooming herself, applying powder and rouge, and dressed in elaborate attire. She then entered the palace to see Shao, bowing gracefully to thank him for his mercy in releasing her from prison. Shao saw her charming smile and beautiful eyes; what a captivating sight! He remained in the palace, and that evening a banquet was held for him to drink and make merry with the parrot. He also invited Daoyu to join him, and Daoyu seized the opportunity to advise Shao, "His Majesty's recent reorganization of the palace has resulted in the deaths of many. In my humble opinion, we should pray for the souls of the deceased to prevent them from haunting the palace and disturbing His Majesty's peace, which would be undesirable." The parrot then encouraged him, saying, "The sorcerer's powers are profound. If His Majesty orders her to perform the rituals for the departed, no unrest will occur in the palace." Shao then asked Daoyu what kind of prayer the sorcerer would offer. Daoyu replied, "As long as His Majesty grants the order, I will arrange it accordingly. As long as His Majesty issues the decree, I will act as I see fit, and there will be no hindrance." Shao laughed, "That's easy." He immediately ordered a palace maid to bring pen, ink, and paper, and wrote the decree on the spot for Daoyu, who then bowed in thanks and took his leave.
By this time, Shao's true intentions were no longer the banquet, but rather the time spent with the parrot and enjoying the scenery. Furthermore, the parrot had drunk several cups of wine, her cheeks flushed red, utterly alluring in her drunken state… Before the banquet was over, Emperor Shao ordered a palace maid to help the parrot to his bedchamber first, followed shortly by the emperor himself, who was then attended to by the maids as they entered the bedchamber. That night, the parrot served Emperor Shao to his utmost pleasure. Emperor Shao wished he could immediately depose Empress Yin and make the parrot empress, demonstrating just how much the parrot could bewitch him.
Seven days later, Dao Yu's prayer ceremony was fully prepared, and he invited Emperor Shao to attend and offer incense, which Emperor Shao accepted. Needless to say, the parrot also had to go.
It turned out that Dao Yu's prayer ceremony was held in the Imperial Garden. I don't know what Dao Yu came up with, but he called this prayer ceremony the "Zhengqian Grand Ceremony." What does that mean? I, a humble scholar, am too inexperienced to understand it.
Emperor Shao and Parrot entered the Imperial Garden hand in hand. Upon reaching the Zhengqian Grand Ceremony, they were greeted by Yan Daoyu, who led 240 female shamans, 32 boys, and 32 girls, all prostrating themselves to welcome them. Emperor Shao looked up and saw that Daoyu had disheveled hair, bound with a purple-gold headband, and wore a fiery red robe.
The female shamans also had disheveled hair, but their headbands were made of fine iron, and their robes were black. The 32 boys all wore yellow Daoist robes, while the 32 girls wore green ones. Emperor Shao smiled at Parrot and said, "Their ranking is quite amusing.
" Parrot softly replied, "This is a solemn place; Your Majesty should refrain from joking."
Emperor Shao smiled without speaking and was led into the Zhengqian Grand Ceremony by Daoyu and the others. The ceremony was filled with the smoke of incense and the brilliance of candlelight. High above, in the very center, hung a painting of a beautiful and alluring goddess, exquisitely detailed. The goddess's eyebrows were like spring mountains, her eyes like autumn waters, her waist slender, and her hair a head of jet-black silk. Most exquisitely, beneath her skirt, two hooks revealed a pointed red dot. In her right hand, a delicate, bamboo shoot-like hand, she held a duster, seemingly lifelike. Emperor Shao, captivated, stared at the goddess's portrait, mesmerized. Dao Yu lit three sticks of incense and invited Emperor Shao to offer them. A symphony of music filled the air, with the sounds of sheng and reed pipes, bells and drums.
Emperor Shao, however, remained fixed on the goddess, ignoring Dao Yu's offering of incense.
Seeing Emperor Shao lost in thought over the exquisite painting, the parrot, feeling a pang of jealousy, gently tugged at the hem of his robe, jolting Emperor Shao awake from his reverie. After bestowing three sticks of incense upon the Daoist Master, before even lighting them and placing them in the burner, Daoist Master softly asked, "Master, may I ask you, who is that beautiful woman above?" Before his words were finished, a sudden gust of cold wind swept through the room, sending chills down the spines of Emperor Shao and the parrot. Daoist Master, especially, turned ashen-faced and cried out, "Your Majesty, this is the Golden Mother of the Nine Heavens! She must not be treated with disrespect!" The parrot added, "Your Majesty, please quickly offer incense and pay your respects!" Although Emperor Shao was ruthless, the gust of wind instantly cooled his lustful desires. He quickly composed himself, offered the incense, and respectfully bowed eight times. After the parrot finished offering its incense and bowing, Daoist Master invited the two to sit to the side, serving them tea and snacks.
Daoist Master said to Emperor Shao, "I am preoccupied with my own rituals and cannot accompany Your Majesty. Please forgive me." Emperor Shao replied, "Master, what are you saying? Please come in." Daoist Master then withdrew and began his rituals. Emperor Shao and the parrot watched intently. As Daoyu entered the ritual hall, her appearance instantly transformed. Her thick eyebrows were raised high, her strange eyes widened, she curled her nose, and stretched out her wide mouth. In her left hand she held a peach wood sword, and in her right, a tin staff. She chanted incantations and danced wildly. Later, her dancing became increasingly frantic, her face flushed red and purple, and she was drenched in sweat. Emperor Shao, seeing this bizarre sight, couldn't help but laugh again. The parrot quickly gave him a wink, and Emperor Shao barely managed to suppress his laughter.
A short while later, Daoyu tossed the tin staff into the air, several feet high. As the staff slid down towards Daoyu's head, she roared, leaped several feet into the air, and snatched the staff. Immediately, the drums and gongs resounded throughout the hall. Daoyu, staff in hand, sat on the ground, closed her eyes, and bowed her head. Then, from the left, thirty-two boys leaped out, each holding a vase; from the right, thirty-two girls leaped out, each holding a willow branch. The boys and girls surrounded Daoyu
, circling him three times until they were paired, one boy and one girl facing each other. The girls dipped their willow branches in the magical water from the boys' vases, and the water from the thirty-two branches was simultaneously sprinkled on Daoyu, like a light drizzle. After a while, they circled three more times, continuing to sprinkle the water on Daoyu. This happened a third time. As the girls sprinkled the water, Daoyu suddenly leaped up, brandishing his staff. The boys and girls returned to their original positions, retreating to the left and right.
The drums and gongs stopped, and a soft melody began to play. Then, forty shamanic women stood in the east, west, south, and north, ten shamanic women in each direction. The Eastern witch held a small blue pennant in her left hand and a steel sword in her right; the ten Western witches held small white banners in their left hands and small copper hammers in their right; the ten Southern witches held small red banners in their left hands and red-cherry spears in their right; the ten Northern witches held black banners in their left hands and black axes in their right. Yan Daoyu, in the center, had now sheathed his peachwood sword and was now holding an apricot-yellow banner. As Yan Daoyu waved his apricot-yellow banner, the forty witches from the east, west, south, and north simultaneously waved forty banners of blue, red, white, and black, creating a vibrant display of colors.
Emperor Shao laughed, "Fun! Fun!" The parrot hurriedly said, "Your Majesty, please don't make a sound!" At that moment, Daoyu pointed his apricot-yellow banner eastward and began chanting incantations. Ten witches from the east rushed towards the center; Dao Yu then pointed west, and ten witches from the west also rushed to the center; Dao Yu then pointed south, and ten witches from the south rushed to the center; when he pointed north, all four groups gathered. Dao Yu shouted "Hurry!", the music stopped, and the drums and gongs sounded again. Forty witches brandished swords, hammers, spears, and axes, thrusting and stabbing at each other. For a moment, sword energy, hammer light, spear patterns, and axe shadows blended into a chaotic mass, interspersed with a ring of yellow energy—the tin staff that Dao Yu was wielding. It turned out that the tin staff was plated with gold. In the midst of their chaotic dance, a clear, resonant sound of a jade chime was suddenly heard, like the evening drum and the morning bell, awakening many. In an instant, the drums and gongs stopped, and the chaotic battle ceased.
Then, Dao Yu and the forty witches prostrated themselves on the ground, while thirty-two boys and thirty-two girls escorted a figure onto the stage. Upon seeing this, Emperor Shao stood up abruptly. Do readers know why? The person escorted by the boys and girls possessed eyebrows like spring mountains, eyes like autumn waters, a slender waist, and jet-black hair. Beneath her skirt, two hooks revealed a pointed red dot. In her right hand, a pointed, bamboo shoot-like hand, she held a cloud-shaped whisk. This was none other than the Nine Heavens Golden Mother Goddess that Dao Yu had mentioned hanging in the center! How could Emperor Shao not be astonished and stand up?
When Emperor Shao looked up again, the goddess was nowhere to be seen in the central painting; only an empty painting remained, further astonishing him. Even the parrot stood frozen to the side. At this moment, all the witches had quietly prostrated themselves on the ground. Emperor Shao and the parrot, unknowingly, also prostrated themselves on the ground. A fragrant breeze wafted through the air, making Emperor Shao feel weak and muscular. He wanted to
look up and see more, but the parrot was there to stop him. Just as Emperor Shao was lost in thought, a golden bell rang out. When Emperor Shao looked up again, the fairy had vanished. When he looked at the painting again, it was still a lifelike image of the Nine Heavens Golden Mother. Emperor Shao, feeling as if he were intoxicated, softly asked the parrot, "Am I dreaming?" The parrot laughed, "In broad daylight, how could you dream? Your Majesty has been bewitched by the goddess!" This made Emperor Shao feel even more bored. In truth, all of this was the work of Dao Yu, and there was no way the Nine Heavens Golden Mother could actually step down from the painting. There were originally two paintings, hanging together. The one with the painting was in front, while the one behind was empty.
As thirty-two boys and thirty-two girls escorted the figures from the painting out, the painting itself was rolled up. When Emperor Shao looked at it, the figures in the painting were gone.
When the golden bell rang, the painting was unrolled again, and the figures in the painting were no longer in the hall. If you ask who played the role of the person in the painting, it was one of Yan Daoyu's goddaughters. The reader should understand that it wasn't that the painting came first, and then someone impersonated the person in the painting. The person came first, and then the painting was created. How could it not resemble the figure? No wonder Emperor Shao was suspicious.
At this moment, Yan Daoyu walked up to Emperor Shao and said, "Your Majesty's sincerity moved the Golden Mother of the Nine Heavens, who revealed her divine form. This is truly a great auspicious sign. Your Majesty's virtue is supreme. Today's ceremony is over. Please return to the palace to rest." Emperor Shao smiled and said, "Today I have seen the Dharma body of the Nine Heavens Golden Mother, and I am deeply delighted. This is all thanks to the divine master's powerful magic, which enabled the Nine Heavens Golden Mother to attend the ceremony." Dao Yu humbly replied, "This humble one relies entirely on Your Majesty's great fortune!" Emperor Shao suddenly became serious and said, "Divine Master, tonight when I return to the palace, I will fast and bathe, and sleep alone in my bedchamber. I will trouble you, Divine Master, with your profound magic, to ask the Nine Heavens Golden Mother to appear before me in my dreams. I still need to ask the Nine Heavens Golden Mother for the secrets of cultivation. I believe that with my sincerity and the divine master's magic, the Nine Heavens Golden Mother will surely be moved." The parrot, hearing Emperor Shao's words, knew he had ill intentions, but worried for Dao Yu.
Indeed: Clever words beg for the secrets of cultivation, but a heart full of sincerity is hard to fathom.
