Chapter Fifteen: A Broken Mirror Reunited, Yet the Broken Mirror Remains Unblemished, Preserving the
White Jade. It is said that Emperor Jun died, leaving a will for his heir, Crown Prince Ziye, to ascend the throne. During Emperor Jun's lifetime, it was known that Ziye indulged in illicit affairs with numerous men, thus he was frequently criticized, and the emperor repeatedly considered deposing
him and replacing his beloved son, Ziluan, as crown prince. Fortunately, the Chamberlain Yuan Yi repeatedly argued against this, saying that Ziye could repent and reform, thus averting trouble. Now that he had ascended the throne and inherited the great lineage, he showed no grief on his deathbed, continuing to indulge in pleasure with eunuchs and concubines. The affairs of state remained under the control of the two philanderers, Dai Faxing and Chao Shangzhi. Three months later, Empress Dowager Wang also fell seriously ill, but Ziye spent his days indulging in debauchery, never even visiting the Empress Dowager. When Empress Dowager Wang realized she was dying, she ordered a palace maid to summon Ziye, but Ziye shook his head, saying, "The room of a dying person is surely filled with ghosts; how can I go to visit him?
" He refused to go. The palace maid returned angrily and told the Empress Dowager everything. The Empress Dowager trembled with rage and said bitterly, "Quickly, fetch me a knife! I'll cut open my belly and see how I could have given birth to such a fine son!" The palace maids hurriedly tried to comfort her, but how could a seriously ill person withstand such anger? She soon died, her heart completely unmoved by Ziye's passing.
A year later, the licentious Ziye, emulating his father Emperor Jun, sought to consolidate power and refuse to relinquish authority to his subjects, wanting to personally manage state affairs. However, the naive Dai Faxing, believing the new emperor to be young and easily manipulated, constantly hindered him. How could the tyrannical Ziye not harbor resentment? Coincidentally, the eunuch Hua Yuan'er also disliked Fa Xing. Knowing that Ziye harbored resentment towards Fa Xing, he secretly advised, "Nowadays, rumors circulate that Dai Fa Xing is the true emperor, and Your Majesty is a false prince. Your Majesty resides quietly in the palace, rarely engaging in outside affairs. Fa Xing has also colluded with Grand Chancellor Liu Yuanjing and Yan Shibo, allowing the three to act arbitrarily in all matters. Everyone, inside and outside the palace, fears and obeys them. If this continues, if Your Majesty does not act quickly, I fear this throne will no longer belong to you." Ziye, already suspicious of Fa Xing, was spurred on by Hua Yuan'er's warning and personally wrote an edict ordering Fa Xing's execution. He also dismissed Chao Shang, who had colluded with Fa Xing, from his official post. A few days later, another edict was issued, appointing Yan Shibo as Left Minister and Wang Yu, the Minister of Personnel, as Right Minister, abolishing all of Yan Shibo's previous positions and concurrent posts. This startled the court, who realized the new emperor possessed considerable power and could not be underestimated. In truth, Ziye lacked the inclination and ability for such a plan; it was merely the suggestion of petty villains like Hua Yuan'er, who coveted power. At that time, Yuanjing and his mentor, knowing Ziye's dislike, secretly plotted to depose him, intending to declare the emperor wicked and request an order from the Empress Dowager to depose Ziye and install Grand Chancellor Yigong in his place. As fate would have it, they consulted with Shen Qingzhi, the Duke of Shixing.
Qingzhi, however, disliked Yigong and believed the plan originated with him. Furthermore, he resented Yan Shibo's habitual arbitrary decisions and lack of consultation. Therefore, he feigned agreement while secretly submitting a memorial to the court. Ziye, upon learning this, was furious. He secretly led the Imperial Guards to surround Yigong's residence, stormed in, and killed Yigong, along with his four sons. Yigong was killed without knowing the reason for his execution, truly an unjust death. Needless to say, Yan Shibo and Liu Yuanjing also met their demise, along with dozens of their followers.
After the matter was settled, Ziye changed the era name to Jinghe, received the congratulations of all officials, and was granted civil and military titles. From then on, Ziye became even more unrestrained and indulged in debauchery. Although he had many concubines in the harem, he lacked a few beautiful women. He suddenly thought of one person. Do you know who it was? It was his elder sister, Princess Shanyin, also born to Empress Wang, whose given name was Chuyu. She was already married to the Imperial Son-in-Law He Ji, and was quite beautiful. Ziye thought of her and summoned her to the palace. Disregarding the relationship between siblings, they engaged in sexual relations as if they were husband and wife. It turned out that Princess Shanyin was inherently licentious and only sought to indulge in lust, having long forgotten shame. After the siblings committed adultery, she stayed in the deep palace and did not return to her residence.
Her husband, the Imperial Son-in-Law He Ji, was furious that his beautiful wife had been taken by Ziye. He secretly raised assassins to kill Ziye. However, the plan was leaked to Ziye first. He and Princess Shanyin made their arrangements, and that very night, a royal carriage took Princess Shanyin back to her residence. Upon seeing He Ji, the princess covered her face and wept bitterly, saying, "My wicked brother is licentious and has violated me by force. I intended to commit suicide, but because I had not yet bid farewell to the general, I endured this humiliation. Now, I am able to return to the general's residence; even if I die, I have no regrets." With that, she reached for He Ji's sword, pretending to kill herself. He Ji, seeing Princess Shanyin return, was enraged and initially intended to draw his sword to kill her. However, seeing the princess weeping and pleading, his heart softened. When the princess drew his sword, intending to commit suicide, He Ji, unaware it was a ruse, couldn't bear to see his beloved wife die before his eyes. He hurriedly snatched the sword, saying, "Princess, please don't do this! I know you've suffered injustice, but it's all the fault of the tyrannical emperor, not yours. Now that you've returned, there's no need to mention it." Seeing that He Ji had fallen for her trap, yet still feigning death, the princess panicked and repeatedly comforted him, finally breaking her tears. That night, He Ji was overjoyed at their reconciliation. However, only three days later, news arrived that He Ji had suddenly died of an illness. The princess, after handling the funeral arrangements, had already gracefully returned to the palace and never returned to her residence. As for how He Ji contracted and died of an illness, most readers are discerning enough not to need a young man's explanation; they already knew it was a carefully planned and executed scheme by Ziye and Princess Shanyin.
However, after Princess Shanyin re-entered the palace, she suddenly became sullen again. Seeing her furrowed brows and sorrowful eyes, Ziye asked her the reason. To his surprise, she uttered something truly extraordinary. She said, "Although Your Majesty and I are of different genders, we are both born into the imperial family. Why then does Your Majesty have six palaces full of beautiful concubines, providing pleasure only for you, while I, besides Your Majesty, receive nothing more? It seems so unfair. I beg Your Majesty to understand my heart and make a decision for me." If anyone else had heard these words, they would have at least spat on her and called her shameless. But the shrewd Ziye laughed heartily and said, "Your Majesty's words are very reasonable. This is not difficult at all; I will surely make Your Majesty happy within three days." Ziye then spoke to Hua Yuan'er, instructing her to select thirty handsome men to enter the palace to serve Princess Shanyin. Hua Yuan'er, following the imperial decree, selected thirty strong and handsome young men within three days and brought them into the palace to serve Princess Shanyin. They took turns enjoying themselves, serving her every evening.
Among the thirty handsome men, one named Yan Bi stood out. With fair skin, exceptional beauty, a petite figure, and eloquent speech, she resembled a delicate young woman, thus winning Princess Shanyin's favor the most.
One evening, Ziye stumbled upon the princess. She and Yan Bi had just finished their revelry and were resting under the brocade quilt. Ziye went forward and lifted the quilt, revealing a pair of slender, white figures. Seeing Yan Bi's red lips, white teeth, powdered face, and a body like sheep's fat, Ziye was immediately aroused. He hooked his arm around Princess Shanyin's cheek and whispered in her ear. The princess simply shook her head incessantly, her earrings swaying like willow branches in the wind. Ziye, however, lingered there, whispering in her ear for a long time. The princess then whispered something in his ear as well. Ziye nodded repeatedly, saying, "I will definitely do it for you; you must promise me." The princess smiled and nodded, then took Yan Bi's head and whispered in his ear as well. Yan Bi blushed and lowered his head, remaining silent. When Princess Shanyin finished dressing and got out of bed with a smile, Ziye had already scurried into the brocade quilt. The princess lowered the bed curtains for them and then left. What happened between Ziye and Yan Bi in the brocade quilt is something I really don't want to write about.
The next day, Ziye summoned Chu Yuan, the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Personnel, to the palace, ordering him to serve Princess Shanyin. This was the condition for the exchange between the princess and Ziye. The princess had given up Yan Bi and demanded Chu Yuan. It turned out that Vice Minister Chu was tall and handsome, with a captivating air about him. Princess Shanyin had long harbored desires for him, but because he was only a court official, she couldn't openly ask for him. Now that Chu Yuan had entered the palace, she was overjoyed and lavishly prepared a banquet to entertain him. Princess Shanyin, heavily made up, personally served him wine, her eyebrows raised and eyes sparkling, flirting with him, her small golden lotus feet occasionally tugging at Chu Yuan's boots.
What a composed and unmoved Chu Yuan! He simply sat motionless, eyes downcast, seemingly oblivious to Princess Shanyin's advances, feigning ignorance. Princess Shanyin, still thinking Chu Yuan was too young, dismissed the palace maids before gracefully sitting on his shoulder, hooking her arm around his neck, sipping wine, and offering him a small cherry, intending to feed him. Chu Yuan, however, remained clenched in his teeth, lips closed, motionless, like a stone statue. The princess was utterly astonished; what a fool! He wouldn't even accept such a tempting offer; was his heart made of iron? That day, the princess's sweet words and affections were wasted, failing to sway Chu Yuan. For several days, despite Princess Shanyin's gentle words and sweet talk, Chu Yuan remained infatuated, refusing to appreciate her tenderness. Seeing Chu Yuan's state, the princess several times considered angrily driving him away, but ultimately, unable to part with this prized lamb, she restrained herself. She went to consult with Ziye, asking him to devise a way to make Chu Yuan submit. Ziye pointed at the princess and laughed, "How utterly useless! A delicious treat offered to you has turned into a closed door." The princess smiled bitterly, "You don't know him; his heart is as hard as iron. I've suffered enough, wasting so much good intentions." Ziye then said, "If coaxing doesn't work, then scare him." The princess nodded, "That's one way." Princess Shanyin returned to her palace and, after a while of seduction, feigned anger, saying, "How can Chu Yuan be so ungrateful? If you don't submit, I'll kill you! Think carefully, is it better to be killed or to indulge in pleasure?
" But Chu Yuan remained completely silent. Princess Shanyin, still unsuccessful, angrily went to inform Ziye, ordering him to punish Chu Yuan. Ziye said, "Wait a moment before breaking off the relationship. Let me think of another plan for you. You might as well go back and have someone strip him naked and let him sleep in the bed. You should also take off your clothes, slip into the bed, embrace him, and use some seductive skills. I'm afraid he won't do what he wants." Princess Shanyin, having received Ziye's brilliant plan, happily went back and did as he was told. The chaste Minister Chu Yuan remained unmoved, letting Princess Shanyin embrace him and caress him in every way. He simply closed his eyes and remained as still as if dead. At this point, Princess Shanyin also gave up her infatuation and immediately changed her tune, beating Minister Chu Yuan and throwing him out of the palace gates. Having escaped the hell of women, Minister Chu Yuan immediately resigned his post and went into seclusion.
Since being rebuffed by Chu Yuan's insatiable desires, Princess Shanyin refused to invite any outsiders into her palace and began to rotate the thirty men she had previously entertained. Princess Shanyin had thirty more male favorites, so Ziye couldn't always indulge in his lustful desires with her. He said to her, "Sister, I've fulfilled your wish through my schemes. Now, none of the beauties in the harem surpasses you. I want to be with you, and there's never a seat available. You must find me a substitute so I can have my pleasure." Princess Shanyin thought it sounded good and said, "Don't rush me, let me think." She pondered for a while, then suddenly smiled and said, "Isn't she good?" Then she frowned and said, "Logically, it won't work; I'm afraid she won't agree." Princess Shanyin's alternating smiles and sorrows, her muttering to herself, made Ziye, who was standing to the side, impatient. He finally said, "Who is she? Tell me!" The princess then revealed her words, instantly creating a scandalous affair in the palace. It was truly a case of: "To win the hearts of bees and butterflies, a red apricot branch peeks over the wall." To find out
