    page views:1  Publication date:2023-03-24
Chapter Thirty-Three: A Gentle Joke Arises in the Palace, a Confessional Remark Before the Banquet – It is said that in his fury, the Sui Emperor deposed Prince Xiu of Shu, reducing him to a commoner. Afterwards, reflecting on his actions, he couldn't help but feel some regret. However, to preserve his dignity, he couldn't grant a pardon, lest he become the subject of ridicule among the court officials. He had no choice but to disregard his father-son relationship. Yet, he remained troubled, sighing frequently after court, utterly listless. Seeing this, Lady Xuanhua, fearing he might fall ill from worry, approached him with a smile and said, “Spring is in full bloom, Your Majesty is burdened with state affairs and troubled. Why not go to Renshou Palace and enjoy the bright spring scenery? The Sui Emperor deeply favors Lady Xuanhua, yet he is also troubled. A visit to Renshou Palace to clear his mind is very fitting.” She nodded and said, “My dear minister, you must come along.” "Lady Xuanhua said, "That goes without saying. It is only right that I serve you. Even Lady Ronghua, Your Majesty, could be invited to come along. Wouldn't it be more lively and interesting?" Emperor Sui said, "Your words make sense." He then ordered a palace maid to summon Lady Ronghua. Lady Xuanhua, meanwhile, tidied her spring attire and rearranged her hair. Emperor Sui sat to the side, watching her lightly apply rouge and delicately draw her eyebrows, which made her even more graceful and charming. He couldn't help but stare in a daze. Lady Xuanhua saw Emperor Sui's expression in the mirror, then turned her delicate body and smiled at Emperor Sui, "Your Majesty, do you think my eyebrows are drawn evenly?" Emperor Sui smiled and walked closer to Lady Xuanhua, carefully examining her face for a moment. He picked up a paintbrush and lightly drew a stroke on Lady Xuanhua's right eyebrow, saying, "Now the shades are the same." "Just then, Lady Ronghua was summoned inside. Emperor Sui was lost in thought and didn't notice. Lady Xuanhua, also looking up with a dazed expression, didn't see her either. Lady Ronghua couldn't help but chuckle, 'What a charming emperor!' Emperor Sui turned around and saw Lady Ronghua, her face beaming with joy. Her attire was strikingly beautiful, possessing a unique charm. Emperor Sui smiled and said, 'You've come. She hasn't finished dressing up yet.
' As he spoke, Emperor Sui approached Ronghua and raised his paintbrush, saying, 'Your eyebrows are uneven. Let me paint them for you.' Ronghua giggled and said, 'If Your Majesty paints them badly for me, I won't accept it.' Emperor Sui smiled and said, 'Very well, you can punish me as you see fit.' Xuanhua interjected, 'Lady Ronghua, if Your Majesty really paints them badly, how will you punish me?' Ronghua said, 'I have my own way of punishing you. We'll talk about it when Your Majesty makes a mistake.'" "Upon hearing Ronghua's words, the Sui Emperor deliberately teased her. He intentionally drew their eyebrows unevenly, one long and one short, one light and one dark. Xuanhua, watching from the side, couldn't stop smiling with her cherry-like lips. She took a small bronze mirror and handed it to Lady Ronghua, saying, 'Madam, take a look in the mirror. The eyebrows His Majesty drew for you are truly quite charming.' Ronghua had already sensed that the Sui Emperor was deliberately teasing her while drawing, and although she knew it was a bad drawing, she pretended not to know and let the Sui Emperor draw as he pleased. But now, receiving the small bronze mirror from Xuanhua, she looked in it and immediately said coquettishly, 'It's bad, it's bad! Your Majesty can't deny it; you must accept this lowly concubine's punishment.' The Sui Emperor, having deliberately drawn it badly to see how Ronghua would punish him, hurriedly said, 'Yes, yes, my dear minister, tell me your punishment quickly, and I will never deny it.' Ronghua laughed and said, 'That's really not good, Your Majesty, please don't be angry.'" "The Sui Emperor said, 'I made a promise beforehand, how could I be angry with you?' Lady Xuanhua also said, 'I, your foolish sister, will be a witness. Your Majesty cannot disobey the punishment you have given, is that alright?' The Sui Emperor said, 'Now that you have a witness, Ronghua, you can rest assured.' Ronghua then took the paintbrush from the Sui Emperor's hand and said, 'Your Majesty's eyebrow drawing is flawed, the fault lies in your lack of skill. However, considering it is your first offense, I will punish you leniently. Let me draw Your Majesty's eyebrows into moth-like eyebrows as a form of practice, so that you will not make the same mistake again. Will Your Majesty agree?' Xuanhua laughed upon hearing this, 'What a novel punishment! Your Majesty cannot deny it.' The Sui Emperor, not expecting Ronghua's punishment to be like this, couldn't help but laugh, 'If I were to draw two moth-like eyebrows, wouldn't I become a female warrior? Your punishment method is truly novel. I made a promise beforehand, how can I break my word? Please draw them for me.'" Ronghua, smiling, subtly curved the Sui Emperor's eyebrows, then held up a small bronze mirror, saying, "Your Majesty, look! Isn't this a wonderful way to paint them?" The Sui Emperor looked in the mirror and said, "With your skillful strokes, my appearance has become even more charming." Ronghua and Xuanhua couldn't help but laugh, teasing each other for a while. Xuanhua, already dressed, then pressed Ronghua against her, saying, "My foolish sister's eyebrows still need to be painted by you, Madam." Xuanhua deliberately smiled, "Such contrasts, one long and one short, one light and one dark, have their own unique charm. In my opinion, there's no need to change them." Ronghua then dampened a towel, wiped the painted marks from the eyebrows, and handed the paintbrush to Xuanhua, saying, "Quickly paint my eyebrows nicely, then we'll go out and enjoy the spring scenery together." Xuanhua smiled, painted Ronghua's eyebrows into willow-leaf shapes, and threw down the brush, saying, "Alright, alright." The Sui emperor then ordered a palace maid to convey his message and prepare a royal carriage.
A short while later, the maid returned, inviting the emperor to board. The emperor then took Xuanhua by the hand with his left and Ronghua by his right, one in each hand, and slowly walked out of the palace. Ronghua laughed, "Your Majesty, it would be best to wipe away your painted eyebrows, lest people laugh at you." Xuanhua replied, "A romantic emperor indulging in a little play is nothing to worry about, and besides, painting eyebrows is not a vulgar matter. In my humble opinion, let his eyebrows be curved as they may; who would dare to laugh at Your Majesty?" The Sui emperor laughed, "Xuanhua is right; Ronghua need not worry." The three of them chatted and laughed as they walked slowly, eventually exiting the palace gates and boarding the imperial carriage, heading straight for Renshou Palace.
The horses clattered and turned, and in no time they arrived before Renshou Palace. The three dismounted, and the palace maids and eunuchs, having heard of the emperor's arrival, rushed out to greet him.
The Sui emperor entered and took his seat. It was nearly noon, and the emperor immediately ordered a luncheon to be prepared. Soon, the banquet was laid out, piled high with delicacies. The Sui emperor then ordered his two consorts, Xuanhua and Ronghua, to... The emperor, surrounded by women, drank merrily, the golden goblet empty, while others vied to add to the festive atmosphere. The Sui emperor, looking around with delight, had completely dispelled the day's worries.
At this time of the Sui emperor's joy, Crown Prince Guang was also indulging in pleasure.
Having overthrown the Shu King Xiu, eliminating a potential threat, Crown Prince Guang held a grand banquet in the Eastern Palace to celebrate with Yang Su. Half-drunk, Yang Su stroked his beard and laughed, "This success is entirely due to a young woman, Xing Yingyu. It seems the Shu King's fate was sealed.
" Crown Prince Guang nodded, "Where is she now? I wish to see her." Yang Su replied, "If Your Highness wishes to see her, it is very easy. She is currently residing at my home and has not yet returned to her hometown. Simply send someone to my home to summon her." "Taking advantage of his drunken state, Crown Prince Guang immediately ordered a eunuch to go to Yang Su's house and bring Xing Yingyu to the Eastern Palace to see the Crown Prince.
Yang Su then said to Yingyu, 'The one seated above is the Crown Prince. His Highness has done a great deal of work to help you avenge your great wrong.' Yingyu hurriedly bowed and thanked him. Crown Prince Guang saw that Yingyu was not bad-looking, and had quite a bit of beauty, so he gently asked her to stand up. He then accompanied her for a drink, and Yingyu had no choice but to comply. Crown Prince Guang then chatted and laughed with her intentionally or unintentionally. Yingyu was very shy, sitting timidly, fiddling with her sash, her cheeks already flushed red to her temples. Yang Su saw Crown Prince Guang's expression and knew what was going on. He even said to Guang, 'This girl is virtuous and filial. If Your Highness can take pity on her, you might as well take her into the harem, so that she won't be defiled by vulgar people. It would be a pity.'" Hearing Yang Su's amusing remark, Guang nodded and smiled at Yingyu. Yingyu, who had been extremely anxious upon hearing Yang Su's words and thought the Crown Prince wouldn't listen, now saw him nodding and smiling, clearly indicating his approval. She quickly rose from her seat and knelt down, saying, "Your Highness's help has avenged my wrongs. Even if I were to be shattered to pieces to repay Your Highness, I would die without regret, let alone serve Your Highness with my humble self. However, I was betrothed to a man surnamed Jiang when I was young, and I cannot break my vow for the sake of personal comfort. Moreover, the massacre of my family was caused by Rui Danian's broken engagement, which led to all the misfortunes.
I am heartbroken and do not want to repeat the same mistake, implicating Your Highness and making my sins even greater." Yingyu pleaded tactfully, and although Crown Prince Guang was displeased, he couldn't force her because her words were so righteous. He had no choice but to abandon his plan and instead nodded in praise, saying, "You are truly a virtuous woman. How could I force you? Tomorrow I will send someone to escort you back so you can return to the Jiang family and fulfill your wish. What do you say?" Yingyu was overjoyed and kowtowed in thanks. Crown Prince Guang then ordered his eunuchs to bring ten large pearls and twenty bolts of colored silk, which he bestowed upon Yingyu, instructing her to return to the Duke of Yue's residence to pack and prepare for her departure the next day. Yingyu happily thanked him for the gifts before returning to Yang Su's home.
Her adoptive father, Chen Keren, was still at the Yang family residence. Yingyu told him about the matter, and he exclaimed in surprise, "What a close call! If my daughter hadn't been so eloquent, things would have been very difficult. Once she entered the palace, we would never have seen each other again." Yingyu whispered, “My heart is not with that. It is the Crown Prince who is not easy to get along with.”
"Father, think about it. Shu King Xiu is his own brother. He helped my daughter overthrow Shu King. His heart is already clear. If my daughter submits to him, she may not have a good outcome in the future. It's better for her to marry into the Jiang family." Upon hearing Yingyu's words, Chen Keren was overjoyed. He gave her a thumbs up and said, "Good son, you have a good eye. The imperial concubines are not as free as commoner women. Since my daughter is going back tomorrow, what am I doing here?" Yingyu said, "Father, would you like to come back to Yizhou with my daughter for a few days tomorrow?" Chen Keren said, "I haven't done business for a long time. I need to do some business properly and can't just wander around anymore." Yingyu smiled and said, "My daughter's matter is all thanks to you, Father. Not only did you avenge her, but you also received many rewards." "My godfather was originally in the medicinal herb business, and Yizhou is a place that produces medicinal herbs. Why not accompany my daughter back to her hometown? My daughter can use the gold and pearls she received as a reward to help her godfather open a shop. Wouldn't that be wonderful?" Chen Keren said, "That's wonderful, but I was still a little worried about letting you go back alone. Although the Crown Prince kindly sent someone to escort you, I still felt uneasy. Very well, I'll accompany you on this trip. We can open a shop there and discuss it further." Yingyu was delighted to see that Chen Keren had agreed and was about to go back to her inner room to prepare everything when Chen Keren called her back, saying, "I just remembered, where is the Jiang family you were betrothed to? Do you know your husband's name?
How old is he this year?" Yingyu blushed when Chen Keke asked about this, saying, "He's also from Yizhou. He's about ten li from where the woman lives. There's a mountain called Niuzui Mountain, and he's at the foot of it. His name is Shangqing, he's nineteen, and he's a hunter." Chen Keke nodded, "I mean, once you arrive in Yizhou, I'll go find him, pick an auspicious day for you two, and once you're married, I'll be at ease." Yingyu blushed again, saying, "You don't need to worry, Father. I have my maternal uncle; he can make the decisions for me." Chen Keke slapped his forehead, saying, "I've really lost my mind! You've already told me, and you have an uncle, Qu Shen, and an aunt, Lady Lü, who both adore you. I don't need to worry about you." Chen Keke chuckled, and Yingyu smiled back before going inside. The next night, Prince Guang indeed sent two guards to Yang Su's residence to escort Yingyu back. Yingyu then bid farewell to Yang Su, who rewarded her with a considerable amount of gold, pearls, and silk. Yingyu thanked him and left, then, accompanied by Chen Keren, was escorted by two guards. The journey itself need not be detailed. Upon arriving in her hometown of Yizhou, she visited her uncle Qu Shen's house and met her aunt, Lady Lü. They wept bitterly in each other's arms. Qu Shen entertained Chen Keren, and they had a long conversation. The two guards then returned to their post. Later, Yingyu married Jiang Shangqing. However, Jiang Shangqing's story unfolds later in the book, and the author must now briefly mention Yingyu's situation to conclude this chapter. Readers should not consider this mere digression. Meanwhile, within the Sui Palace, a great upheaval was brewing. As the saying goes: "Don't think that towering buildings are just empty structures; storms always arise from flat ground." To find out what happens next, please read the next chapter.
