Chapter Eleven: The Joy of Jade Gambling

"Distinguished guests, it's now twelve o'clock. Your sealed bids are now behind me,

and tally will be completed in ten minutes. Before then, please take a short break,"

said Nobuyuki Tendo, standing in the open space of the exhibition hall, microphone in hand.

Behind him was a long table filled with small bamboo baskets. Inside each basket were small cloth bags

containing the different prices offered by wealthy patrons for the same piece of jade.

A group of beautiful waitresses were busily recording the data with pens and paper. After several middle-aged women with certified

public accountants reviewed and confirmed the data, it was entered into the computer.

Once the tally was complete, the numbers of the winners of each lot would be displayed on three large projection screens behind them

.

Tendo Nobuyuki smiled and said, "Everyone here is an old friend, and we are very grateful for

your . Before the results are announced, I would like to emphasize one thing: since we are all friends, if

the same piece of jade has the same bid price, I suggest that it be shared

among the few people who bid the same price, with payment proportional to the number of bidders, and the profits shared accordingly. We don't need to do what other auctions

do, where a second bidding war is held for the same price, which only damages our harmony.

Does everyone agree with our suggestion?"

"Okay, let's do it!"

The people below readily agreed, their goodwill towards the Hokkaido merchants deepening.

Whether it's jade gambling or an auction, usually when bids are the same, a second bidding war is held

until . But this obviously inflates the price, and the biggest beneficiary is

the owner of the auctioned item.

Now that the Hokkaido merchants have voluntarily given up this profit, it naturally gives everyone a good impression that "these people

value friendship, not money."

Don't underestimate the power of first impressions. Put yourself in their shoes: when you do business with someone, would you

prefer to do business with an honest and simple person, or with a shrewd and greedy one?

Tendo Nobuyuki looked down and saw exclamations of admiration everywhere. Hiraiwa Tateyama quietly gave a

thumbs- , expressing his admiration for Nobuyuki's brilliant idea.

The owner of Mitsui & Co. was overjoyed. He hadn't expected his daughter's suggestion to have such a

good effect. Truly, his daughter was a good daughter of the Tendo family! Even though she didn't usually manage the family business, she

had a keen eye for talent at crucial moments!

Ten minutes passed. After the accountants entered all the data into the computer, Hiraiwa

Tateyama stood in Tendo Nobuyuki's place to unveil the final mystery of who would win the jadeite.

"Ding..."

As the lights dimmed,

the numbers of the jadeite stones that had been bid on were clearly displayed on three huge projection screens, line by line. Following each stone number was only the number of the successful bidder;

no specific price was displayed.

Twenty-four wealthy men and their families, including Hiraiwa Tateyama and Tendo Nobuyuki, stared intently

at the three screens. Occasionally, someone would sigh with regret, while many others would exclaim in delight.

But no one could match the richness of their expressions compared to Oda Okifumi and Asai Yoshimasa.

I, Kiyone, and the four beautiful female students had been watching them from the very beginning. When the numbers "Rock

No. 125, No. 20, No. 21" were announced, Oda Okifumi and Asai Yoshimasa

's expressions shifted from surprise to confusion, from confusion to anger, and finally, a mixture of anger and utter embarrassment…

The five beautiful girls almost wanted to record such a fascinating display of emotions.

However, although they didn't use a camera, the suppressed giggles of the five beauties kept

echoing in my ears.

Fortunately, we were sitting far away, not with them; otherwise, that laughter alone would have

aroused Oda Okifumi and Asai Yoshimasa's suspicion.

If they had other options, these two sworn enemies would never have bought a single rough stone with each other, but the problem was

they had no other choice and could only sulk inwardly.

Especially Oda Okifumi, who searched everywhere for his daughter, wanting to ask her why she had

filled in that number herself. Did she know that Asai Yoshimasa had also filled in that number?

Kiyone, being such a clever little girl, had already hidden behind us, making

it impossible , leaving him only to swallow his anger.

"Toshio…" Fumi, knowing everything I had done, asked curiously, "Why did you make them

buy the same rough stone?"

"You'll find out soon enough,"

I smiled slightly, offering no further explanation.

But the five clever girls easily guessed that there was likely something hidden in this 125th rough stone

; otherwise, Toshio wouldn't have gone to such lengths to orchestrate this situation.

With the winners of the sealed bids announced, this first round of sealed bids sold a total of 122 rough stones, exceeding

60%, which was a very good result.

There were many people having their stones cut on the spot. Since there were only twenty-five jade craftsmen, each person could only have

one . Almost everyone brought out their most prized stone for the waiting craftsmen

to begin cutting.

The wealthy people's mentality was understandable; who wouldn't want to

show off in front of other wealthy individuals with similar wealth and power, and who wouldn't want to enjoy the envious and admiring glances?

The Imperial Hotel's service was impeccable. In a short while, all the clutter was removed, and

the twenty five sets of stone-cutting tools were neatly arranged throughout the exhibition hall.

Several ropes were used to cordon off the area, keeping unrelated wealthy individuals outside, so as not to disturb the jade craftsmen

's work.

The wealthy were restless. Although the cost of the stones represented only a small portion of their wealth,

the anticipation of a winning bet kept their eyes glued to their stones. Occasionally

, they would wander among the stones, while everyone else seemed invisible to them.

A person who is good at gambling on stones is not necessarily a person who is good at cutting stones.

Many jade enthusiasts, when cutting stones, make hasty cuts without considering the consequences,

which, while simple, easily leads to waste.

True master jade carvers, however, typically stand before the stone, assessing the possible

distribution and color of the jadeite within. They then spend considerable time sketching with chalk, accurately positioning and designing the cut before finally

beginning the process.

There are three methods of jade cutting: rubbing, cutting, and polishing.

Polishing refers to the final grinding and polishing, revealing the jadeite's beauty; this

is post-processing. The truly thrilling methods are the first two.

Rubbing is the most cautious approach, also known as "skin rubbing," which involves slowly rubbing away the surface layer with a polishing machine

to reveal the jadeite from the surface.

This method is very slow and conservative, but also the safest . However, the most common

method is cutting.

As the saying goes, "Rubbing doesn't guarantee a profit, cutting does

," only by completely cutting the jadeite can its true value be determined.

Jade craftsmen typically use a "bow saw with sand pressure" method to slowly saw open rough stones,

stopping immediately upon discovering a jade vein.

Now, with advanced technology, companies producing mining equipment have created various precise

cutting instruments, which are also useful for rough stone cutting.

The rough stone is placed in the cutter, which can be accurate to within five millimeters—extremely precise

and fast. A five-millimeter cut can usually be completed in just two minutes.

Depending on the craftsmen's habits, skills, and the size of the stone, they choose different instruments.

However, regardless, soon, the entire exhibition hall was filled with piercing noise.

Several teenagers couldn't stand it and ran outside, but all the adults

stayed , at most wearing earplugs to block out the noise.

I only focused on three rough stones: Sun Zhenyi's grey jade, Tiantong Xinyou's Longtang

jade , and the most anticipated Hpakant jade from Oda Okifumi and Asai Yoshimasa.

The piece of jade from Longtang that Tendo Shin'yoo possessed was the smallest of the three, only the size of a winter melon. The jade craftsman responsible for cutting it

chose an ancient, very primitive foot-operated cutting machine.

Its working principle was similar to an old-fashioned sewing machine, consisting of a circular iron disc, a rotating shaft, and a belt.

The shaft was rotated by foot, generating force to make the circular iron disc work.

Water was continuously added with a water gun, and an assistant added diamond powder, thus achieving the purpose of grinding open the jade.

Using this ancient foot-operated cutting machine, the speed wasn't very fast, but it didn't waste material, ensuring the

authenticity of the cut jade.

The jade craftsman was very experienced; he started grinding from the opening, applying force along the direction of the jade band, quickly

wiping away the surrounding stone, revealing patches of green.

Tendo Shin'yoo breathed a sigh of relief. As long as the jade band, which was already ten centimeters long, didn't break, and

its length extended to over forty centimeters, and its width and thickness were also good, the two million US dollars would be recovered.

A few minutes later, the jade craftsman began polishing along the veins of the jade, shaping it to about thirty centimeters in length

before breaking off the rest.

With the length as a reference, the next step was to determine the width and thickness. Using the length as a reference, the craftsman

polished very quickly, removing the entire piece of jade in less than ten minutes. It was indeed the size I had predicted:

thirty centimeters long, twenty centimeters wide, and five centimeters thick.

Being of glassy type with a water content of five points, it was generally quite good, and the cost should have been recovered.

Relieved, Tian Tong Xinyou clapped hands with his wife and daughter, then turned his attention back to

the jade being polished.

After removing the outer jade veins, the craftsman changed his approach, using a jade cutting machine

to quickly and precisely cut along the veins and imperfections, quickly slicing the jade into several small pieces.

He then skillfully polished the smaller pieces on a foot-operated cutting machine.

When they reached the third small piece of jade, Tendo Shin'yō and his friends didn't pay much attention at first, as the first

two pieces yielded nothing. However, when the jade craftsman flipped it over, a transparent, crystalline luster appeared,

shimmering under the light.

"Wow, Mom, look..."

Chōmu jumped up excitedly, grabbing Tendo Shumei's hand.

Tendo Shumei was also overjoyed, hugging her daughter and cheering. Only Tendo Shin'yō, while happy,

remained reserved, waiting for the final result.

As the jade craftsman continued to rotate the jade, a fist-sized piece of glass-type jadeite gradually emerged

. After being rinsed with water, it was placed on a plate beside him.

"I won!"

Tendo Shin'yō pumped his fist.

This glass-type jadeite had over five points of clarity, worth at least two million US dollars. Combined with

the long jade band found earlier, Tendo Shin'yō had netted two million US dollars!

Truly worthy of Ryūdō Jade!

Truly my lucky Ryūdō Jade!

Tian Tong Xinyou was filled with a surge of exhilarating enthusiasm, as if he had been transported back to the day he first gambled on jade

.

His feelings now included an added layer of love for life and family, and were just as

wonderful!
