I recently had the privilege of talking with a 70-year-old traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) doctor for two hours. Getting to the point, how should one maintain health, not just sexual function? The human body is a whole, and we need to examine it from all angles. To summarize health maintenance simply as "eating well, sleeping well, and having regular bowel movements," coupled with appropriate exercise and TCM kidney-tonifying treatments, most people can eliminate sub-health problems. But how to tonify the kidneys? TCM views the kidneys as the storage place of the body's energy. Here, "kidneys" doesn't just refer to the kidneys themselves, but encompasses the entire reproductive system in TCM. Working overtime every day, socializing, and then working late into the night puts the kidneys in a state of overexertion, and over time the body naturally becomes unresponsive. When young, due to abundant kidney energy, fatigue is not felt. But as one gets older, the effects become immediately apparent, with decreased physical strength and energy. What to do? Supplementation and nourishment—I won't go into detail here; there are many posts online about kidney tonification, but it's crucial to distinguish between kidney yin deficiency and kidney yang deficiency to avoid the wrong approach and the opposite effect. Nourishment: 1. Alcohol is acceptable, but not to the point of intoxication. Traditional Chinese medicine has a long history with alcohol; it can invigorate blood circulation, but never get drunk. 2. Go to bed early; you must be in bed before 11 pm. The body needs rest during the midnight hour; put everything down and go to bed. 3. Sexual intercourse should not be too frequent. What constitutes "too frequent" depends on your individual body. After intercourse, you shouldn't feel physically exhausted. Before intercourse, it's best for the couple to talk to each other, set the mood, then engage in foreplay, and finally do whatever else you want. Women's bodies don't react as quickly as men's, so give your partner more time to adjust. It's best to avoid tonifying the kidneys when drunk, tired, on an empty stomach, sick, immediately after a meal, or when in a bad mood or experiencing extreme joy or sorrow, as these can easily harm your health. The kidneys are where the body stores essence and energy. Tonifying the kidneys doesn't immediately give you a rosy complexion, abundant energy, or uninterrupted erection—that's an aphrodisiac. Tonifying the kidneys helps you accumulate energy within your body so you can provide it when needed. Regular Kegel exercises, abdominal breathing, and ear massage can all help. My memory is limited, but the general idea is there; fellow men can figure it out themselves. Also, tonifying the kidneys isn't just for men; women need it too, which can contribute to a fulfilling sex life. My writing is rather poor, please excuse my poor skills.
