Chapter 79 Midnight Haunted House

Unlike the lively sounds of heavy breathing and soft moans in Wuyue's room, the night was now deep and quiet.

In the backyard of the Muyun Mansion in Jinan, which he knew so well, like other parts of the land, it was dark and silent everywhere. Only

a single lamp flickered in the main hall of Qiushui Pavilion, where eight soldiers and a man who looked like a colonel were still drinking around a table. Four of them were already

fast asleep, seemingly drunk and unconscious.

The table was no longer the exquisite and expensive deep purple golden nanmu

carved octagonal table with countless fingernail marks on its edges. The chairs were no longer the golden nanmu chairs that he always found too hard. The expensive furniture had long been moved out, and these new ones

seemed to have been recently brought in. They were rough and ugly, completely out of place with the elegant and wealthy style of the hall.

The dishes on the table weren't his least favorite dishes like boiled beef and mutton. There was a plate of

peanuts , a bowl of potatoes, several plates of vegetables, and a bowl of vegetable and tofu soup. He'd drunk quite a bit, though; more than a dozen

empty liquor cans were piled up beside the table.

A soldier staggered out of the hall and onto the edge of the dark courtyard. A gust of wind blew, and

the large trees in the courtyard swayed violently, their shadowy forms like ghostly figures, the rustling of branches and leaves quite eerie!

He quickly glanced back at the hall door; the faint light inside made him feel a little more at ease. He hurriedly took the opportunity

to urinate.

Suddenly, a chill ran down his spine; something seemed to be rubbing against his back.

"Stop it!" He freed his right hand and shoved it behind him. These guys loved playing pranks, especially

after drinking.

Huh? Why is my hand sticky? He looked up and saw that his hand felt like it had been soaked in soy sauce, but where did the soy sauce come from with

such a strong fishy smell?

He slowly turned around and couldn't help but gasp! A man-made figure was suspended in mid-air behind him, with only half of

its scalp remaining. The right side of its hair was disheveled, while the left side revealed shattered and sunken white bone, with white brain matter

slowly oozing from the cracks. Its face was a bloody mess, with its eyes bulging out and only connected by tendons, drooping below two dark,

bloody eye sockets. Its nose and mouth looked as if they had been struck by something heavy, with the skin and flesh completely ripped off. The bridge of its nose was shattered,

revealing a horrifying hole, and two rows of white teeth were scattered and gaping open like a blood-red maw

, with a bloody tongue protruding from the middle, still dripping blood. It was simply like a cannibalistic demon!

Between the clenching and clenching teeth, a strange, human voice uttered: "Brother, take me back!

I don't want to stay here..." Each syllable was followed by a trembling sound.

"Who...who are you?" the soldier asked in a trembling voice, his gaze sweeping downwards. Good heavens! The man's body was a

mangled mess , a mixture of various colors! The flesh of his chest and abdomen was gone, his heart, liver, lungs, and other internal organs were crammed together and dangling

below his stomach, his intestines were scattered and spilled onto the ground, dripping with blood; where was his lower body, his lower half

? Ah—standing alone five feet to the right!

The man's voice was faint and ethereal as he said, "I'm one of Commander Li's men. I've seen you before. Aren't you Wang Shitou

? I died a terrible death! Those stinking monks said my body was incomplete and couldn't be put to the afterlife. Please, Brother Shitou, put my

lower body back together and take me back to my hometown in Jinyang. I don't want to stay here as a wandering ghost!"

"You...you're a ghost? Brother, figure out how to go home yourself. I can't help you!" He was terrified and

didn't even bother to pull up his pants. He tried to run away!

He had seen the commotion when the bodies were being collected on Xiaoxi Street and Nan Street. The scene was horrific! Tsk tsk~ So many bodies were smashed to pieces.

He heard it was the Blue Peacock who did it. Even the old monks couldn't

put them to the afterlife! It's not a good thing to have a vengeful spirit remember your name. If you get haunted by it, that would be terrible!

The man grabbed him and said, "My soul is trapped here. I can't go back on my own. Take me back,

please! Please~ please~" His voice became somewhat ferocious towards the end.

"Captain Zhang, help!" Wang Shitou struggled but couldn't break free, so he cried out for help!

Captain Zhang, who was still drinking inside, heard the extremely shrill screams outside and his heart clenched. He quickly

called his three brothers who hadn't yet passed out and they ran out of the hall. Just then, they saw a mutilated, dismembered

ghost clinging to Zhang Shitou, its white teeth pressed tightly against his forehead.

Wisps , being sucked into the ghost's belly with each breath. The ghost even stuck out its long tongue and licked

the scattered wisps of soul...

Heavens! A ghost that sucks people's souls!

The three soldiers screamed in terror and took off running. In their panic, they didn't find the main hall door.

The one in front crashed heavily into the wall with a thud, seeing stars. His companion rushed towards the light, about to

step into the hall, when the candlelight inside suddenly went out, plunging the world into complete darkness. They couldn't see their own hands in front of their faces!

Apart from the howling wind and the rustling of the tree branches, there was no other

sound in the darkness, not even footsteps. Everywhere was equally dark. The soldiers didn't know where to run. Their

only thought was to stay put, making no sound, lest the evil spirits discover their hiding

place.

Yet, in the darkness, their breathing grew increasingly rapid, as if they couldn't suppress it any longer.

In that terrifying moment, Captain Zhang, a veteran of countless battles, possessed far greater courage than the lowly soldiers.

He managed to stand his ground, not fleeing. With a clang, he drew his sword and cried out in a trembling voice, "Brothers, don't...don't be afraid!

Grab your weapons and charge!"

He swung his sword towards the spot he remembered the demon had been hiding. With a sharp "thud," the blade sliced through

flesh , the feel of it embedding itself in bone exactly as he had imagined—a clear hit. Yet, there was no scream. Apart from

the "thud," there was no sound, not even the rustling of branches in the wind. It was as if the night had suddenly

been gripped by the throat!

This intensified his terror. He stood frozen for a moment, then suddenly a bloodcurdling scream came from behind him—a sharp,

short scream, like someone opening their mouth to cry out only to have something suddenly and forcefully bite their neck! This wasn't the demon's scream;

it was clearly the voice of his subordinate, Zhao Hai!

He suddenly remembered the tinderbox he had on him, hurriedly took it out and lit it. A bright light flashed before his eyes, stinging them .

He closed his eyes briefly and then opened them again. In the blink of an eye, Zhao Hai had collapsed behind him. He knelt down and checked his breath; he was already dead

. His fate was exactly the same as Wang Shitou's—his soul had been sucked away by a vengeful ghost! His other two brothers stood there, their faces pale and trembling,

completely stunned.

Just as he was about to speak, a chilling wind blew past, and the tinder in his hand vanished, plunging him back

into darkness!

A faint, intermittent ghostly wail rang out: "Having absorbed the souls of the living, you've indeed gained much more strength,

Captain Zhang! If you don't take me with you, I'll absorb all of you and leave this hellhole myself,

wahahahahaha "

Captain Zhang felt a chill run down his spine and roared, "Brothers, all of you, come out!"

There was no response. He roared for a while longer before he heard a creak from inside, and a door opened, revealing a flickering

light. As they drew closer, it was his other three brothers.

By the light of their candles, Wang Shitou and Zhao Hai lay dead on the spot, but the evil spirit was nowhere to be seen.

"Maiya, why are there only the three of you? Where are the other brothers?" The light from the simple candlestick brought him

some reassurance to ask, barely managing to stay calm.

Maiya, walking ahead and holding a candlestick, said sleepily, "I don't know, we were just woken up by the boss

..."

Captain Zhang said in a deep voice, "Let's go in and take a look!"

Led by him, several brothers returned to the hall with candles. Four drunk brothers were still

fast asleep . He strode forward, patted one of them on the shoulder, and shouted, "Brothers, wake up, something's wrong!"

No response. He shook him vigorously, but to no avail. His mind raced, and he quickly reached into his nose. No

breath. The other three? The same!

In the flickering candlelight, the faces of the five brothers were dim and uncertain, their flushed faces filled with horror.

He composed himself and said in a deep voice, "Don't be afraid, everyone. Come with me to check each room."

After checking each room, he found that all eight remaining brothers had their souls drained by the vengeful ghost. They

lay dead on their beds, their faces filled with extreme horror. He could imagine what terrifying sights and horrific experiences these brothers had

witnessed .

Since the early morning of the 15th, when the government troops captured the Rakshasa Sect's stronghold in Jinan Prefecture, the remaining Rakshasa Sect members had fled

in panic but were still putting up a stubborn resistance in the north of the city. The main force that had captured Muyun Prefecture had looted the prefecture before

being transferred to the north to fight. As a captain in the garrison, he led his twenty-seven brothers to be stationed in

this backyard. Qiushui Pavilion was his main camp, with twenty men, including himself, stationed there. He left two brothers in each of the other five

main buildings to be on night duty.

In the short time he'd been drinking that night, fourteen men had died silently,

leaving only the six of them alive in the entire Qiushui Pavilion!

No matter how terrified he was, he had to be responsible for the lives of his men; they were all his fellow villagers who

had joined his army one after another! He led five men to Qifeng Tower, Peach Blossom Garden, and Flying Eagle Pavilion to investigate.

Finally, they arrived at the inner room on the east side of the upper floor of Chaoyun Tower. Judging from the furnishings, it was clearly a young lady's boudoir. One

of his men wearing only his underwear, lay dead on an embroidered couch, a painting of a beautiful woman lying beneath him. The woman in the painting was smiling and holding a flower, her figure

slender and her face beautiful.

What he was doing before his death was unimaginable! And it wasn't just him; the back courtyard was full of women, and every

room with a painting of a woman presented the same scene…

After inspecting everything, Captain Zhang couldn't help but gasp! Two corpses remained in each house, their souls gone

, unable to be released, their faces filled with terror, without exception!

He sighed deeply, "Alas, too many people died in this manor the night before last. Many of the mutilated corpses

couldn't be properly appeased, and their souls, without guidance from high monks, couldn't be reborn. They remained in the manor as wandering ghosts, their resentment and

malevolence growing stronger and stronger, turning into vengeful spirits. It seems this place is now a haunted house!"

Behind him, Maiya, steeling herself, stammered, "Boss, shouldn't we hurry to the front yard and meet up with Commander Sun and

the others? We can't stay in the back yard anymore; no one can fight against evil spirits..."

She spoke the last two words very softly, as if afraid of being overheard by those hidden in the shadows.

Captain Zhang nodded. That was the only option; they should leave quickly. This place was too eerie!

He took the first step towards the door, and suddenly everything went black. Was he hallucinating from the fright he'd experienced tonight? He

closed his eyes , then slowly opened them again. It was still pitch black. He raised his hands, but couldn't see anything! He couldn't help but shout in a deep voice,

"Maiya, why did you put out the candle?"

Maiya stammered behind him, "I...I didn't! Just now, I don't know how, the candlestick in my hand

just disappeared!"

Zhang Xiaowei forced himself to calm down. Just now, the tinderbox in his hand had also suddenly disappeared. It must be another prank

by a vengeful ghost! "Let's hold hands and walk out one after another!"

Relying on his memory, he walked towards the door, intending to leave this boudoir as soon as possible. After

taking , his head hit something hard with a thud. His head spun, and he saw stars. He thought to himself,

"Looks like I've gone the wrong way and bumped into a wall."

He reached forward and touched it. Sure enough, it was a wall, but it felt rough. He moved sideways and

touched the left side all the way to the left corner but couldn't find the door. He went to the right, but still couldn't find it. This is really strange!

Where did the door go? Even if it was closed by a vengeful ghost, there should still be a door frame!

The six of them formed a line and groped around the room several times. There seemed to be no doors, not even windows!

In the hellish darkness, an old woman's hoarse voice mournfully sang, "Give me back my life!

My granddaughter died so tragically! You evil people!"

At the same time, a faint, venomous voice cried out, "Brothers, take me home! I don't want to stay here and be

bullied by those evil spirits!"

...and many more, all sorts of voices—venomous, complaining, distressed, pleading, and roaring—seemingly including voices of men,

women , young, and old. The room was crammed with countless wronged souls and vengeful ghosts!

Captain Zhang said in a trembling voice, "Brothers, let's all sit against the wall, huddle together, tear off strips of cloth

to plug our ears, and pretend we didn't hear anything. It can't do anything to us..."

The boundless darkness was like being in a silent void. The six men sat in a circle, each wrapping their arms tightly

around the waists of the two people on either side, finally feeling a sense of security and preventing their souls from leaving them.

Amidst the chaotic wailing of ghosts, a sudden, piercing ghostly howl rang out, "Waaaaah~ Waaaah~ Hahaha~"

Even with cloth stuffed in his ears, Zhang Xiaowei's eardrums still throbbed with pain! The howl continued incessantly, echoing through the air.

The ghost darted about, sometimes to the east, sometimes to the west, seemingly far away, then suddenly appearing right before him, howling

wildly !

But when he reached out to touch it, it was empty!

"Hahaha~ Really~ what~ can't~ do~ it..." Each two words were accompanied by a long, trembling sound, sending

chills down his spine.

Before the last syllable of "what" faded, he felt two rows of sharp teeth biting his forehead. He was terrified and

swung his sword to slash, but it hit nothing; his forehead was still being bitten!

A wave of dizziness washed over him, as if his soul was being sucked out by a vengeful ghost

.

He tried to raise his left hand to touch his forehead, but found he couldn't even lift a finger! Despair washed over him. Was he going to die like this?

The teeth on his forehead had been removed. Was he already dead, a soulless ghost?

Before he could finish his thought, he heard the vengeful ghost chanting, "Considering you're a leader, put him in the back..."

Suddenly, his right hand felt empty. The brother seemed to be dragged away by an irresistible force, followed by

a short, desperate scream!

A lamb to the slaughter, even worse! A lamb facing a hungry wolf can at least bare its horns and struggle in its death throes, but what about him?

He had a sword in his hand, but he was too weak to wield it, and he didn't even know where to begin struggling!

Another brother was dragged away, his soul devoured!

Darkness, oppression, fear, frustration, humiliation, and anger surged up, making it unbearable for him. He

jumped up like a madman, dragging his powerless body and running frantically around the room! The remaining three, including Maiya, were

infected by his actions and suffered a complete mental breakdown, jumping wildly like him...

The room was filled with clattering and crashing sounds as the four bumped into things, becoming

dizzy . They never stood up again, going straight to the underworld
