Chapter 5 of the Romantic Continent: The Road to Escape East

On the official road leading from Wu'an to the Great Lakes region, a slightly dilapidated carriage moved slowly forward. The bumpy road shook the carriage, causing it to creak and groan constantly, making one worry that if the jolting continued, the carriage might fall apart.

The driver was an elderly man with a white beard, expressionless as he held the reins, occasionally flicking the whip at the weary lone horse, as if everything around him was indifferent.

Inside the carriage sat a mother and child, with only a small bundle beside them, presumably their entire belongings. The mother's face was somber, as if she were lost in thought. The child leaned against the window, chin in hand, gazing intently at the flowing fields outside.

"Mother, Mother, look!" Suddenly, the child's innocent but excited voice broke the silence.

The woman was startled, then quickly recovered and asked, "What, Long'er, what do you see?"

"Mother, look! There, wisteria flowers, exactly like the ones in the palace!" The child pointed out the window, a naive smile on his face, as if he had discovered a new continent.

The woman looked in the direction the child was pointing. Beside a small grove of trees along the official road, wisteria flowers were in full bloom. Compared to the wisteria in the palace garden, they were much more vigorous, and the blossoms were exceptionally beautiful. But just thinking of this, her expression darkened. These were flowers the child had only just learned about this year, and now, on his first recognition, he was already a fleeing man.

To avoid affecting the child with her own emotions, the woman quickly composed herself and smiled, saying, "They are so beautiful! Long'er has such a good memory. How will Mother reward our little man?"

"Mother, do you like them?" The child blinked his jewel-like eyes and looked up at the woman.

"Yes, Mother likes wisteria." The woman nodded, affectionately stroking the child's head before pulling him into her arms. He was so clever; whenever she was with him, she was always overwhelmed with love. Despite his small size, he had become her only support.

"Stop, stop the carriage, stop the carriage!" The child suddenly jumped out of the woman's arms, pounding on the carriage door with his little hands.

The woman looked anxious, reaching out to support the unsteady child, asking, "Long'er, what's wrong, Long'er? Do you need to get out to relieve yourself?"

At the same time, the carriage came to a stop, and the child lifted the curtain, about to jump down.

This startled the woman inside, but fortunately, the white-bearded old man had already jumped down, caught the child, and gently placed him back on the ground.

The woman peeked through the curtain, while the white-bearded old man wore a hearty smile. The little boy's mischievous and adorable demeanor had left a deep impression on him. Both he and the woman at the carriage door assumed the child needed to urinate, and watched him with knowing smiles.

However, the child didn't relieve himself by the roadside; instead, he ran off towards the grove of blooming wisteria.

The woman and the old man in the carriage were both startled, especially the old man, who had no idea why the child was going to the grove. How could such a mishap occur during their escape? In a moment of panic, he quickly chased after the child.

After her initial shock, the woman's smile deepened. She guessed the child's intention; combining it with their earlier conversation in the carriage, she knew he must have learned that his mother liked wisteria, so he went to pick some.

The woman slowly emerged from the carriage, watching the child run towards the grove, her face filled with happiness. The white-bearded old man followed behind the child, arms outstretched, as if afraid the child might stumble and fall.

The child quickly caught up, his chest heaving as he panted, then circled a cluster of wisteria blossoms, probably choosing the most beautiful one to offer to his mother.

The old man then realized the little fellow wanted to pick a wisteria flower, so he straightened up and followed behind the child, protecting him.

The woman was now slowly making her way here; the journey had been bumpy, and resting in this flower-filled place was a good idea. After all, they were far from the capital of Wu'an; another day's journey would take them to the territory of Fast in the Great Lakes region. However

, just as the woman was pondering this, she suddenly heard the child cry out in surprise, followed by a deep shout from the old man.

The woman looked up hastily and saw that the child and the old man under the wisteria in the grove were surrounded by four divine warriors. The old man held the child in his arms and then angrily gestured to the four warriors.

The woman leaped towards them at top speed. They had never stopped chasing them all along the way. But they seemed to have disappeared suddenly these past few days, and now they had appeared here. It seemed that they had changed their pursuit plan, and she could not be careless!

However, just as the woman was about to reach the encirclement of the four divine warriors, two more divine warriors suddenly leaped out of the bushes and blocked her path to the child and the old man.

"Get out of the way!" the woman shouted sharply. Without her in front of the child and the old man, the danger was extremely great.

The two divine warriors didn't answer, but charged at the woman with their swords drawn. They attacked her from the left, right, above, and below, more decisive and ferocious than before, completely disregarding the fact that they were facing an unarmed woman.

The woman, unarmed, was naturally unable to parry their coordinated sword strikes. She could only dodge left and right, playing with their agile movements.

Seeing their swords swinging down, she executed a serpentine sway, the blade grazing her side. Missing her target, the other warrior attacked again, his longsword gleaming white, sweeping horizontally, seemingly poised to cut her in half. The woman leaned back, her body almost touching the ground, watching the sword's edge graz her body; the sword's energy almost touched the hairs on her nose—a mere hair's breadth. Having

easily deflected two attacks, the two warriors, unwilling to give up, simultaneously thrust their swords at her just as she regained her footing. Seeing this, the woman suddenly approached the two men, her eyes fixed on the hand holding a sword. She swiftly used a technique to disarm the opponent. But the opponent was no ordinary person; he wouldn't allow his weapon to be taken by the woman, so he secretly gathered his inner energy and refused

to let go. Just as she was wrestling with one man for his weapon, the woman caught a glimpse of the other man's sword, which he was about to retract. Seizing this opportunity, she twisted her body, her back leg sweeping upwards with incredible speed, unleashing a legendary, powerful close-quarters "Mirror-Looking Kick" aimed straight for her opponent's head.

The man was immediately terrified. In their previous three encounters, he had never discovered such close-combat skills in this woman. Faced with this powerful "Mirror-Looking Kick," he had no way to dodge. He only felt a gust of wind brush his face, and the next moment, he closed his eyes, taking the full force of the kick. A penetrating force swiftly penetrated him, and he only felt a strange ringing in his head, followed by a flood of deep, resonant sounds, and then he knew nothing more.

The woman, having knocked down one man, still had a chance to seize the weapon from the other. However, when she saw the four divine warriors surrounding the child and the old man begin their attack, she immediately let go and rushed towards them.

Inside the encirclement, the seemingly frail white-bearded old man was actually a highly skilled individual. His seemingly slow, deflecting punches and blocks were surprisingly effective against the divine warriors' swift attacks, allowing him to not only deflect attacks from all sides but also often turn the tide of battle with a series of evasive maneuvers, turning each attack into an advantage. Such martial arts were truly rare on the continent; seemingly clumsy and slow moves revealed their profound depth in the face of the opponent's fierce offensive.

The child was protected impenetrably by his agile movements, and the four divine warriors could not get close to the child.

"You old devil, always meddling!" a Protoss warrior cursed angrily at the old man, having already suffered greatly at his hands.

Since the assassination attempt on the Seventh Princess and her child in the Puvasa Palace, they were first rescued by the Black Sorcerer King Yang Xi and the Poison Sect Master Dubich, then disappeared for a period. When they finally tracked them down again, they found they were already on their way eastward from Puvasa. Thus, they relentlessly pursued them, only to find that the two men in black and white had vanished, replaced by a white-bearded old man.

In their first encounter, they suffered a heavy loss at his hands, and subsequent pursuits were all thwarted by this old man. After careful investigation, they learned that this man was a descendant of the Wuji Sect, an insignificant organization

from the Hundred Races War. Small organizations like this had mostly disappeared after the Hundred Races War, their deeds forgotten by anyone, including the Protoss who had witnessed it all. However, besides this information, they had no other details about this person. They couldn't verify anything about his unique martial arts, whether he still had a clan, or even why he helped the Seventh Princess Tang Juan. Having repeatedly thwarted the gods' pursuit plans, the gods now harbored the same deadly hatred towards him as they did towards Tang Juan.

"One should be merciful when possible; as a member of the gods, you should understand this principle!" the old man said slowly and deliberately, almost like a dance, as he parried the attacks of the gods' warriors. No, to be precise, he chanted.

"Old man, if you don't get out of the way, don't blame us for being impolite!" a god's warrior protested.

"Hehe, what does it matter if we're polite or not? There's a divine way for gods, and a human way for humans. Gentlemen of the gods, please respect yourselves!" the old man said with a chuckle, seemingly oblivious to everyone else, as he continued to parry the attacks of the other three.

"Enough with the nonsense! You've missed your chance today, don't blame us for being ruthless!" The divine warrior sneered, then suddenly pulled an object from his waist.

The object was delicate and graceful, shaped like a feather fan. It was inlaid with bright, luminous gemstones, radiating a faint, sacred glow, like stars reflected in the sky, or shimmering waves. Just one glance at it gave one a sense of divine peace; truly a treasure!

"Oh? The Wind God's Jade Fan." A glint flashed in the old man's eyes, but it vanished quickly, replaced by a calm resignation.

"Take this, you old devil!" the divine warrior roared triumphantly, suddenly wielding a jade fan and chanting towards the heavens, "In the name of the Wind God, I summon the gods of the eight directions, granting me the immense power of wind, rain

, thunder, and lightning to destroy the enemy's form and spirit..." As the divine warrior chanted, a sudden storm arose, and howling lightning swirled above the old man and child, a massive aura completely surrounding them. If this continued, a sudden clash of lightning would surely follow, and if it struck them, the consequences would be unimaginable.

Seeing this, the woman decisively lunged at the divine warrior who was chanting with the feather fan. If she didn't interrupt his chanting, once the powerful aura formed, there would be no way to stop him.

But little did the woman know that a massive aura had already formed around the divine warrior who was chanting, becoming one with the aura swirling above the child and old man, now accumulating immense energy.

As she delivered her jab to the man's head, she suddenly felt a tremendous force surge through her arm and into her chest and abdomen.

Sensing danger, she tried to retract her fist and withdraw the force, but it was too late. A powerful aura swept through her body, sending her flying more than ten feet.

She crashed heavily to the ground, struggling to her feet, but as soon as she exerted force, she felt a sweet taste in her throat, followed by a gushing of blood with a strong, metallic taste, instantly staining a patch of soft grass red.

"Mother..." Surrounded and now enveloped by the powerful aura of the Wind God Jade Fan, the child, seeing his mother injured, whether from unbearable oppression and fear of the intense aura or from the pain of his mother's injury, finally cried out in anguish.

Meanwhile, the energy of the Wind God Jade Fan continued to increase, not only creating a scene of wind, rain, thunder, and lightning within the encirclement, but also uprooting the surrounding plants—a truly horrifying sight.

The divine warriors continued their incantation, and the wind, rain, thunder, and electric machine, resembling a miniature celestial canopy, began to spin rapidly again, growing larger and higher.

From afar, it looked like a powerful tornado, and the old man and the child were completely engulfed in the dark vortex. The powerful thunder had long since drowned out the child's cries, and it was impossible to know whether they were dead or alive; perhaps they had already been torn apart by the intense vortex.

Watching this scene, the woman lying in the distance couldn't help but wail. If her son, Long'er, met with misfortune, what reason would she have to live?

"Long'er, Long'er! You can't be hurt!" the woman cried, struggling to sit up.

However, her injuries were too severe, and she immediately coughed up another mouthful of thick blood. But despite this, she still had no intention of giving up. While gushing out mouthfuls of blood, she struggled to her feet and staggered towards the center of the battle.

Perhaps drawn by the woman's mournful cries, the divine warrior who had previously disarmed her walked straight towards her, his longsword already gripped tightly, clearly intending to end her life.

For days, they had sent waves of divine warriors to hunt down this mother and child, their sole aim being to take their lives. Now, seeing the woman severely wounded, wouldn't a single swing of his sword complete their thwarted mission?

Ten steps… five steps… a smile appeared on the divine warrior's face. It seemed the woman's life was within his grasp; she wouldn't cause any trouble. How could he not feel a surge of satisfaction?

Closer, closer, the divine warrior raised his sword high, aiming at the woman's neck, waiting for just one more step to deliver a powerful blow, and it would all be over. He glanced back at the vortex stirred by the Wind God Jade Fan, which seemed to shatter the heavens and the earth, then a cold smile appeared on his lips as he swung it downwards…

“Chirp chirp…” Several earth-shattering explosions rang out, the space suddenly trembled, and the radiating air currents lifted everything around them, shooting outwards in an instant, including the divine warriors and women on the outer perimeter.

A beam of extremely white light rose straight into the sky from the center of the vortex, instantly turning the world white, its power comparable to Ye Tianlong’s “Ultimate Kingly Way.”

When the flying sand and stones subsided, the beam of light gradually dimmed, and the figures of an old man and a child gradually appeared in its center. They stood there like beautiful sculptures, their bodies covered in a layer of holy light.

After a while, the child seemed to remember something, broke free from the old man’s grasp, and ran out.

"Mother... Mother, Mother, where are you?" The child looked around frantically, for besides the bare earth cleared by the aura, there wasn't a single blade of grass, let alone a single person.

Yet, even as the child called out until his voice was hoarse, he heard no reply from his mother. Too young to understand life and death, he knew perfectly well that his unanswered calls meant he was about to lose her. The grief and loss of never seeing his loving mother again was unbearable for a two-year-old. His heart-wrenching cries, and the sight of him sitting on the ground wiping away his tears, were strangely endearing. How adorable was the little dragon!

"Little dragon, don't cry, your mother is over there." After a long while, the white-bearded old man slowly walked to the little dragon's side, pointing in a direction. His face was radiant with a peaceful and serene aura, and his expression towards the little dragon was filled with joy.

Long'er raised his tear-streaked face, staring blankly at the old man. After a moment, as if just coming to his senses, he scrambled to his feet and ran towards the direction the old man had pointed.

His stumbling, unsteady gait resembled that of a lame little tiger, falling occasionally but quickly getting back up, as he raced towards his mother, calling out repeatedly,

"Mother..." Upon seeing his mother's clothes, Long'er rushed forward, shaking them frantically.

"Long'er, Long'er, you're alright! That's wonderful, Long'er! Mother can finally relax." The woman wasn't as badly injured as she had imagined. She struggled to her feet, embracing the child tightly, tears streaming down her face.

At this moment, the old man had already reached the mother and child. He took out a pill from his robes and handed it to the woman, saying, "Quickly take this. There is no cure in the world for the injury caused by the Wind God's Jade Fan. Taking this will save your life, but from now on, you will lose all your martial arts skills. Most things in this world are not determined by willpower; you must take care of yourself!"

The woman's hands trembled as she accepted the pill from the old man, staring blankly at him. After hesitating for a moment, she finally put it in her mouth and swallowed it with a high-pitched voice. Afterward, she nodded to the old man, expressing her deep gratitude.

As soon as the pill entered her stomach, the woman felt as if a thousand troops had been released from her body. They circulated through every tiny channel, as if clearing away excess while simultaneously replenishing what was lacking.

After resting and circulating for a week, her severe internal injuries seemed to have disappeared. However, the sweat pouring out from her pores seemed to have released all the energy from her body, and she felt a double wave of relief and loss.

After slowly recovering, she looked up and asked the old man, "What about those divine warriors? Are they all dead?"

The old man smiled slightly and pointed around, saying, "I have never killed any living beings. They are all alive, just like you. However, after this battle, their divinity and martial arts will be completely gone. Since they have disobeyed the gods' will, they are no longer gods. Everything in the world has its own rules, and what you do today you must be responsible for tomorrow. No one can escape them."

The woman nodded as if she understood and said, "Thank you, Elder Xuan."

The old man stroked his beard and glanced at the carriage stopped on the official road: "How are you feeling? Let's get going!"

The woman was now able to move freely. She nodded slightly, stood up, took the child's hand, and walked towards the carriage. The old man followed closely behind; he wanted to take them to their destination. After

another day of travel, that afternoon they crossed the border checkpoint of Wu'an Kingdom and officially entered the territory of Fast.

Having shaken off the entanglement at both sides' checkpoints, they stopped in a small town within Fastland.

After resting for a while, the old man said to the woman, "I can only take you this far. The road ahead is for you to walk your own path."

"Master Xuan, we..."

The woman was about to speak when the old man interrupted her, stroking the child's head and continuing, "This child is no ordinary person; his future is limitless. As his mother, I can only advise you to follow the will of Heaven in all things, and never do anything that would harm your reputation for personal gain. The road ahead is uncertain; the path you choose is entirely up to you. I wish you good health and all the best!"

The woman nodded repeatedly. After yesterday's brush with death, she had a new understanding. Facing the old man's advice again, she sincerely said, "Thank you, Master Xuan, I will remember."

"Hehe..." The old man let out a long laugh, leaving behind the words, "My worldly affairs are finished; I'm leaving," and vanished in an instant, leaving only the echo of his laughter reverberating in the air...
