5 common misconceptions about men abusing Viagra

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common disease among adult men, with an incidence rate of 50% in middle-aged and elderly men and 5%-10% in young men. With the entry of three types of Viagra—Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra—into the Chinese market, many patients have been relieved of their suffering. Doctors point out that many people have misconceptions about the use of this medication and should pay close attention to avoid harming their bodies and affecting its effectiveness.
Misconception 1: Waiting for natural erection after taking Viagra.
Many people believe that an erection will occur simply by taking the medication. This is not the case. Sufficient sexual stimulation is required for the medication to be effective. Many patients, unaware of this characteristic of Viagra, wait for an erection after taking the medication or misjudge the timing of sexual activity, affecting the efficacy.
Misconception 2: Lack of time awareness when taking Viagra
. Like other medications, Viagra requires approximately 30-60 minutes for gastrointestinal absorption after oral administration, and its effects last for more than 4 hours. The optimal time for sexual activity is 1-4 hours after taking the medication. Many patients experience reduced efficacy due to poor timing.
Misconception 3: Lack of understanding of potential side effects .
Viagra has a mild vasodilatory effect on peripheral blood vessels. Sensitive patients (approximately 15%) may experience temporary facial flushing, mild headaches, dizziness, nasal congestion, or gastrointestinal reactions. These will not affect sexual activity or cardiovascular function. If these potential side effects are not understood, and mild side effects cause tension or anxiety, it can affect the efficacy.
Misconception 4: Lack of understanding of Viagra contraindications
. If taken concurrently with commonly used cardiovascular medications such as nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate), it may significantly lower blood pressure and cause cardiovascular risks. Therefore, patients who have recently taken nitrates should strictly avoid using Viagra. Furthermore, sexual activity itself is physically demanding; therefore, cardiovascular patients with decompensated heart function or moderate to severe cardiovascular disease should not attempt sexual activity while taking Viagra.
Myth 5: Blindly seeking a cure. Viagra
can only temporarily improve erectile function and cannot cure edema. Therefore, patients can only rely on taking the medication when needed to maintain sexual activity. Furthermore, Viagra is not 100% effective; the overall clinical effectiveness rate is around 80%. Patients with severe organic erectile dysfunction, due to severe damage to the penile cavernous tissue structure or nerve function, do not respond well to oral medication and require surgical implantation of an artificial erectile device for effective treatment.
