To perfectly explain the relationship between these two, Buddhist theory is necessary. However, considering that it might be difficult for everyone to grasp immediately, I will try to explain it from a worldly perspective, making it easier for everyone to understand. We've all heard the term "舍得" (shědé), which on the surface describes someone as generous, not stingy, and willing to share their good things with others without expecting anything in return. A deeper understanding of it isn't difficult either: "舍得" means that you can only gain by giving up something. It means that by giving up your money or labor, you will receive many unexpected things. We might think this is the principle of "for every gain, there is a loss; for every loss, there is a gain." But the other side of this principle reveals the concept of "cause and effect." Cause and effect isn't exclusive to Buddhism; many people believe in it to some extent. Giving up something plants a seed, and you will reap the fruit that ripens. For example, during the Spring and Autumn Period, Fan Li diligently assisted King Goujian of Yue, ultimately leading to the revival of the Yue state. After the victory, the King appointed Fan Li as a general. Fan Li knew that Goujian was a man who could share hardship but not wealth, so he wrote a letter of resignation, abandoning his high-ranking position and generous salary. He packed only a small amount of jewels, boarded a boat, and sailed away, never to return—this can be seen as a cycle of gathering and dispersing. After resigning as General, Fan Li went to the State of Qi, changed his name and surname, and farmed by the sea. Within a few years, he amassed hundreds of thousands in wealth. The people of Qi admired his wisdom and invited him to be their prime minister. Later, Fan Li lamented, "At home, one can accumulate a thousand pieces of gold; in office, one can reach the rank of prime minister. This is the pinnacle for a commoner. Prolonged fame and honor are inauspicious." Therefore, he returned the prime minister's seal, distributed his wealth to his neighbors, and disappeared again—this can be seen as a cycle of gathering and dispersing. Arriving at Tao, Fan Li saw it as a vital trade route, a place where he could become wealthy. So he called himself Tao Zhugong and stayed there. He traded goods according to the opportune moment, and in a short time, accumulated tens of millions. Later, Fan Li's second son was imprisoned in the State of Chu for murder. Fan Li said, "A life for a life, that's the way it should be, but my son shouldn't die in public." So he sent his youngest son to visit him, bringing a cartload of gold. However, his eldest son insisted on going in his place, threatening suicide. Left with no choice, Fan Li agreed. Some time later, the eldest son returned home with news of his second son's death. The family was grieving, but Fan Li smiled and said, "I knew my second son would be killed. It wasn't that my eldest son didn't love his brother, but he couldn't bear it! He grew up with me and knows the hardships of life, so he couldn't bear to part with his wealth. My youngest son, on the other hand, was born into wealth and doesn't know how hard it is to acquire wealth; he easily gives it up. I decided to send my youngest son because he could give up his wealth, while my eldest son couldn't. His death is only natural and nothing to grieve over." This can be described as three gatherings and three separations. Fan Li always thrived wherever he went, achieving great success and fame, truly possessing great wisdom. Furthermore, maintaining a clear head in the face of fame and fortune, knowing when to advance and retreat, and understanding when to relinquish wealth and status—this too can be called great wisdom. Perhaps it is precisely because Fan Li possessed these "three gatherings and three dispersals" that later generations revered him as the God of Wealth. What lies to the left of wisdom? It is "gathering," progress, and acquisition; what lies to the right of wisdom? It is "dispersing," relinquishing, and seeking completeness.
Another example: While casually flipping through a book after dinner today, I came across a passage where Richard Li talked about how his father, Li Ka-shing, taught him how to do business. He said, "My father actually only taught me some principles of life. In business, when cooperating with others, taking six parts is reasonable, seven parts is also acceptable. Our Li family only takes six parts." What a profound yet simple business principle! Sometimes people are just too shrewd, hoping to earn as much as possible in a single deal, ideally taking seven parts, even ten. Little do they know that they're only earning short-term money. To earn big, long-term profits, you need to be generous, making others feel you have a good deal to offer them. On the surface, you may seem to earn less, but in China, a country where everything is about personal relationships, you're actually earning long-term profits and lifelong partners! Haha, a sudden realization!
These two examples illustrate the principle that giving is the cause and receiving is the effect. In other words, in Buddhism, giving alms brings wealth. If you want to get rich, you must practice giving alms. Giving one thing brings ten thousandfold returns. Returning to the topic of the relationship between lustful thoughts, masturbation, and other illicit sexual behaviors and one's blessings, it's important to understand that a person's birth, education, employment, marriage, children, and even death are all predetermined by their own blessings. On the surface, it may seem that someone has worked hard to get into a good university or obtain a good job, but this is actually the result of their own good and bad karma. Similarly, there are the children of the wealthy who seem to acquire everything without any effort, which is also the result of their great good deeds in past lives. However, many of these children are unambitious, spending their days chasing women, squandering money, and wasting their blessings—this is also the result of their bad karma in past lives. But the good and bad deeds one creates in this life will not only manifest in this life but will also affect the next. Some of these wealthy children later have their families go bankrupt, becoming worthless, and after death, they may even fall into lower realms. On the other hand, those who refrain from illicit sexual behavior, killing, stealing, etc., gradually find their lives becoming sweeter and sweeter, their families incredibly happy, and their wealth increasing. Good and evil will ultimately be rewarded; it's not that retribution won't come, it's just that the time hasn't arrived yet. Lustful thoughts, masturbation, and other forms of sexual misconduct are extremely despicable habits, condemned by heaven, earth, and spirits. They greatly diminish one's blessings, or diminish one's fortune, because committing such acts brings forth many other unwholesome karmas. For example: If you fancy a girl and want to pursue her and sleep with her, you might deceive her by pretending to be someone you're not, telling many lies—this is one example (the karma of deception). Pursuing a girl requires a lot of money, and since you have little income, you might steal money from your family—this is another example (the karma of theft). If you manage to get into bed with her and have sexual relations, including premarital sex, this is yet another example (the karma of sexual misconduct). If you only consider pleasure during sex and ignore contraception, and your partner becomes pregnant, you might hastily have an abortion or even kill someone—this is yet another example (the karma of killing). And if you can't find the same feeling as in pornographic films after sex, and you want to dump her... sigh... If you have legitimate motives for getting to know a girl, and you both sincerely interact and understand each other, and if things go well, wouldn't it be wonderful to get married and have children? People who frequently masturbate will gradually become sleazy, and may even deviate from their sexual orientation. People who frequently watch pornography will gradually become obsessed with high heels, bondage, stockings, and other such attire. They will also have sexual fantasies about seeing sexy, attractive women outside, immediately having the thought of having sex with them. Therefore, when they get home, they will fantasize about having sex with them and masturbate to release their pent-up desires. Over time, you will feel extremely lustful, unable to stop, and suffering greatly. At the same time, heaven and earth will look down on you and make things difficult for you at every turn. Therefore, you will often encounter many obstacles and setbacks in your endeavors; although you work hard, you can never perfectly accomplish something. This is the meaning of "man proposes, God disposes." Why is it that some people seem unremarkable, and don't seem to work very hard, yet always accomplish things easily, as if divinely aided? Well, that's true. A person with deep virtue and fortune will have everything go smoothly. At this point, everyone should understand that the evil causes sown by sexual misconduct in this life will manifest when one's blessings are almost completely depleted. Therefore, it is not worth it at all. It is truly not worth sacrificing a happy life in this lifetime for a few seconds of pleasure each time.
"Giving" means charity. Planting the good seed of giving will naturally yield good results. The evil seeds of lust, such as lustful thoughts and masturbation, will undoubtedly lead to bad results. For everyone's physical and mental health, please, brothers, abstain from lust and cherish your blessings.
