Sex is an innate instinct

Throughout a person's life, sex hormones play a crucial role in maintaining secondary sexual characteristics and in sexual activity. Removing a man's testicles not only deprives him of male characteristics but also causes the reproductive organs to atrophy, resulting in a lack of sexual desire. Removing a woman's adrenal glands can lead to decreased libido, sexual response, and reduced sexual activity. This is because androgens are the primary hormones affecting libido in both men and women. Men's androgens mainly come from the testes, while women's mainly come from the adrenal glands. This clearly demonstrates that without adequate levels of sex hormones, libido and sexual activity are difficult to maintain and complete.

Studies have found that hormone concentrations are not significantly related to subjective sexual desire or the degree of physiological congestion during arousal. Even if there are differences in libido during the menstrual cycle, they are very small. It depends more on social and family factors and personal life and cultural experiences, especially the relationship between the partners, the social environment, the prevailing emotions, and the appropriateness of sexual stimulation. These factors are sufficient to mask the role of sex hormones in libido.

A person's so-called "sexual experience" or sexual history seems to be a more potent "sexual fuel" than sex hormones; this is the imprint and psychological trajectory that sexual activity leaves on the cerebral cortex. While the gonads of older men tend to atrophy and sex hormone levels drop significantly, they can still enjoy satisfactory sexual lives. Clearly, it's not sex hormones that are at play. From the perspective of the sexual response process, normal intimacy and affection between men and women are the most effective aphrodisiacs. Whether sex hormones directly participate in sexual intercourse is unclear, and even if they are, it's not the primary factor, as the sexual response process, which lasts from a few minutes to ten or twenty minutes, is completed by rapid reflexes of the nervous system. Men produce sufficient androgens themselves. Even those with erectile dysfunction or other sexual dysfunctions are not due to a lack of androgens, but primarily due to psychological or sexual harmony-related reasons. Using hormones to "enhance virility" is like drinking poison to quench thirst. Additional androgen supplementation can suppress the normal reflexes and functions between the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and testes. Long-term, high-dose use can also lead to testicular atrophy and prostate enlargement, making it a truly counterproductive approach.

True hormone deficiency requiring supplementation is very rare. Androgens can play a significant role in restoring libido and sexual function in men who have had their testes removed or whose testicular function has declined; however, if treatment is truly necessary, they should be used under the guidance of a doctor. In women with normal androgen levels, androgens can enhance libido, but their practical application is greatly limited due to side effects such as masculinization.
