Because it was a first-tier university in the Shanghai metropolitan area, even a second-tier university in a less prestigious area was considered impressive. That was the perception back in the early 2000s, not something we'd hear from those online celebrity teachers on Douyin (TikTok) who teach postgraduate entrance exams. Now it's a first-tier university.
The school, almost ten years old, is nearing saturation, and those young teachers who joined during the initial expansion period are now in their early 30s. These teacher's colleges have a high proportion of female students and even more female teachers. Those who went to university in the early years of the expansion know that popular majors were finance and management, and computer science. Teacher's colleges had a limited number of teacher-training majors, so the newly added majors were simply finance and management, computer science, and things like applied chemistry. Municipal teacher's colleges, especially junior colleges, were mostly for students with poor academic performance or who didn't like studying. Of course, admissions were mainly based on local students, many of whom already had connections to employment.
It's fair to say that teacher training colleges have significant local influence and extensive networks, but this influence is inversely proportional to, or rather asymmetrical to, the quality of their schools and students, leading to various labels being attached to them.
